00:15October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time to honor survivors, support those in treatments, and remind every woman that early detection saves lives.
00:26Tonight on House Call, we'll talk about breast cancer awareness, early screening, and what every woman and man should know about breast cancer.
00:36Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers affecting women, but when detected early, it's also one of the most treatable.
00:45Here's what you need to know.
00:47Number one, know what your normal is.
00:51Be familiar with how your breasts look and feel.
00:54Do a self-breast exam once a month, a few days after your period.
01:00Check for any changes to your breasts, such as a lump, redness, swelling, or nipple discharge, and report those changes to your doctor.
01:10Number two, get screened.
01:14Mammograms can detect cancer before they are felt.
01:17Women should start regular mammograms at the age of 40.
01:21If you have a family history of breast cancer, then your breast cancer screening should start earlier than the age of 40 in the form of an MRI or breast ultrasound.
01:33Know your risks.
01:34Risk increases with age, family history, obesity, alcohol use, and hormonal factors.
01:42However, women without risk factors can still develop breast cancer.
01:48Number four, your lifestyle matters.
01:52Exercising regularly, having a healthy weight, limiting alcohol intake, and managing your stress are all important in reducing your risk for developing breast cancer.
02:04Men can get breast cancer, too.
02:07Although rare, if a man detects any changes to his breast or pectoral muscle region, report it to your doctor.
02:15This October, remember, early detection saves lives.
02:21Schedule your mammogram, encourage the women in your life to get screened, and continue to raise awareness.
