Transcript
00:00If you're not okay with seeing an old man butt every like five minutes of this show, don't watch it.
00:07If you're not okay with sex scenes approximately every three minutes of this show, don't watch it.
00:14If you like Victorian outfits, watch it.
00:17Hey Naturally Curly World, I'm Grace. Welcome to Watch and Go, the show where we do our hair and talk about TV shows, movies, things we watch, things we listen to.
00:26Harlots is a new Hulu series, so it's only available on Hulu, and it is rated mature because it's about, you guessed it, harlots.
00:36So if any of you are watching with your children, if you are under 18, if you shouldn't be watching this, turn me off.
00:43If you're of age, then let's talk about harlots.
00:50Have a boarding house for young ladies.
00:52Don't head with me.
00:56The city is made of our flesh, but of our pieces.
01:11I offer your love.
01:12For a harlot that doesn't exist.
01:13I'm going to use Diva Curl's Build-Up Buster instead of my shampoo.
01:21In honor of Small Business Month, which is May, I'm going to be using the Two Girls with Curls conditioner.
01:27I'm going to use this Tea Tree Scout Care Anti-Thinning Root Lift Foam.
01:31Haven't used it before.
01:32Hopefully it's good.
01:33A little bit of Briogeo, Curl Charisma Leave-In Defining Cream.
01:37And some Diva Curl Soft Hold Note Crunch Styler.
01:43I just washed, conditioned, put in some leave-in, and put my hair up in this tea towel.
01:47Harlots is set in 18th century London, and it's basically exactly what the name says.
01:53So, there are two rival houses, and they're basically trying to, like, destroy each other.
02:01So, one of the houses is, like, the up-and-coming house.
02:04It's not as, like, classy, and they don't live in as nice of a house.
02:09And then the other house is, like, where all of, like, the fancy harlots are.
02:13And you have to, like, know an instrument and, like, two languages and, like, be really well-groomed and stuff to be a harlot there.
02:21But they also, like, abuse their harlots really badly.
02:24As they say in the show, sex work is the world's oldest profession.
02:29It still exists today.
02:30It definitely existed back then.
02:32But I actually did not realize, like, the extent to which it existed.
02:36I think it's, like, one in three women in that time period did some form of sex work.
02:42Back then, it was, like, one of the only professions that women could do and make good money at.
02:46Also in this show, there are, like, these Puritan ladies who go around, like, cursing the harlots.
02:52And they wear, like, these, like, lace things that only show their face.
02:56And they, like, come around here, and then the rest of them is covered.
02:59It looks really uncomfortable.
03:00They just stand outside screaming in the streets about how, like, everyone in there is going to hell and, like, what big sinners they are.
03:07Or there's, like, a sex scene, and, like, you can hear them screaming outside about how you're, like, going to hell and stuff.
03:13Which is totally a buzzkill if you're trying to, like, get down, you know?
03:17So, I'm rooting for the lower house because the madam at the upper house is the one who, like, abuses all the harlots, and, like, she's super manipulative.
03:26And the one in, like, the less nice house has, like, come up from the streets, and she's, like, climbing her way up the harlot ladder.
03:35And I'm, like, you go, madam.
03:37Oh, another thing that I constantly think about while I'm watching this show is hygiene, okay?
03:42Do they shower every day?
03:44Do they bathe between clients?
03:47How do they, is there protection?
03:49Like, oh my gosh.
03:51And at one point, I think one of the harlots dies of the plague.
03:56Because that was a thing back then.
03:58The plague.
04:00The literal plague.
04:02The black plague.
04:03Like, it's really stressful if you, if you're someone who, like, is into hygiene.
04:08So, basically, for anyone.
04:11Prepare to be stressed.
04:12I'm gonna put this, uh, root lift foam in my hair.
04:16One of the things that bothered me the most about this show is that the mistress of the lower house, she has two daughters, and she sells their virginity.
04:25She goes to the opera, and she's, like, I'm taking closed envelope bids for my daughter's virginity.
04:33Yeah, so, it's, uh, it can be a grim show, for sure.
04:38Okay, I'm gonna put some of this gel in now.
04:41Is it a show about female empowerment?
04:45No.
04:46Not really.
04:47I put my hair back into a plop after I put the gel in, just to set it a little bit.
04:51And now, I'm gonna defuse it.
05:01Okay, so this is my finished wash and go.
05:04It's, it's looking different than usual.
05:06I don't dislike it.
05:07It just looks different.
05:08It's fine.
05:08I like it.
05:09I don't know.
05:09I would give Harlitz a 3.5 out of 5.
05:12Um, I'm gonna keep watching it just because I am loving the whole Rival Houses drama.
05:17It's definitely not a show for everyone, obviously, um, because of the subject matter.
05:22So, think twice before you watch it, but if you're into that kind of thing, definitely watch it.
05:26Have you watched this show?
05:27What'd you think?
05:28Uh, do you have any other suggestions about what I should watch?
05:31Or product recommendations?
05:33Hit me up.
05:34Don't forget to like, share, and subscribe to our page.
05:37We have watch and goes every Wednesday and videos every Friday.
05:40And I'll see you next time.
05:42Bye!
