00:00Hey Naturally Curly World, it's Grace and today I'm here at Lyric Salon getting a curly
00:06haircut.
00:07I'm doing kind of a big transformation, I'm going to get a wavy bob or what I like to
00:15call a wab.
00:16So, yeah, let's go for it.
00:20I'm going to cut my hair off.
00:23Here we are.
00:24We're doing it.
00:27Okay, so I'm here with Brooke at Lyric Salon, she's going to be cutting my hair today.
00:34Okay, so I was thinking kind of like a blunt bob, something like this.
00:38Okay.
00:39What do you think?
00:40Well, I think it would look great on you and I just want to make sure you're prepared to
00:44lose all that length.
00:45I think I'm ready.
00:46Yeah?
00:47You've been thinking about it?
00:48Yeah.
00:49It's been on my mind.
00:50Show me some more pictures just to make sure I know that we're on the same page here.
00:52Yeah.
00:53So...
00:54And that one's a little longer looking.
00:55Yeah.
00:56Um...
00:57I don't want it too long because it's going to grow pretty fast, so...
01:00Okay.
01:01But I like the way that it frames her jawbone like that, so...
01:05Okay.
01:06And then are you wanting sort of a heavier looking baseline because a lot of those photos...
01:12Mm-hmm.
01:13Okay.
01:14A really dense sort of baseline here?
01:15Yeah.
01:16Okay.
01:17Yeah.
01:18I like that look.
01:19I've had it like this short.
01:20Okay.
01:21Like probably to here.
01:22I've never had it like short, short.
01:23Okay.
01:24And then does your weight pattern tend to sort of tighten up a little if it gets weight
01:26released or do you need that length to kind of see the revolutions a little more?
01:31From what I noticed, it tightens up a little bit.
01:32Okay.
01:33Yeah.
01:34Okay.
01:35That's good to know.
01:36Yeah.
01:37Okay.
01:38That's part of the reason why I want to cut it is just to see how it does with the shorter
01:43cut.
01:44Okay.
01:45Good to know.
01:46Yeah.
01:47All right.
01:48And then are you wanting sort of a consistent line from front to back or you want any lift
01:55in certain areas more than others?
01:57Um...
01:58Symmetry?
01:59Asymmetry?
02:00Hmm.
02:01I like the look of when like one side is longer than the other.
02:05So we could try that.
02:06I also have issues like I feel like my crown is always really like weighed down.
02:11So maybe if there's something we could do there.
02:14I'm like totally open to the suggestion.
02:16Okay.
02:17Sounds good.
02:18Yeah.
02:19Are you going to require pulling it back?
02:21Um...
02:22Like into a pony?
02:23Or just containing it in a way that gets it completely off your face?
02:26That would be ideal.
02:27Okay.
02:28Yeah.
02:29And I just like it to be up sometimes, you know.
02:32I get that.
02:33Yeah.
02:34Okay.
02:35Good.
02:36All right.
02:37Well let's get started.
02:38Okay.
02:39Cool.
02:40I was nervous this morning.
02:44I like texted my friend and I was like, oh my God, what have I done?
02:48This is a terrible idea.
02:49My hair is never going to grow back.
02:51Now I've achieved, I've achieved calm.
02:53Now.
02:54Cause it's already happening.
02:56So.
02:57Brooke, like how's a curly cut different from a regular haircut?
03:01What do you do differently?
03:02Well, we want to take into account several things.
03:06Um, one being that curly hair, no matter really what the pattern, definitely looks different
03:13dry than wet.
03:14So in an effort not to stretch and take it outside of where it likes to live.
03:19We like to cut it dry.
03:20At least I do.
03:21And, um, kind of do a few different phases.
03:26I think if you're removing links, that's one of those fun dramatic moments that you can
03:31start with around the space.
03:33So you can really establish for people, where is your comfort zone here?
03:38And since you've showed me pictures that varied in length from say, almost that chin,
03:43all the way almost to the collarbone kind of going right in between there, knowing that
03:49your hair probably will spring up a little bit since we've released some weight.
03:54Right.
03:55Um, and then I like to cleanse the hair, detangle and style it and let it dry under a dryer
04:01so that we can see how that's changed and then address any little things we need to at
04:05the end.
04:06Gotcha.
04:07And how did you learn how to do this?
04:08Over the years, I think just observing hair and how it falls and listening to people's
04:15struggles, um, with their hair texture.
04:17Honestly, regardless of how, quote, curly it was, just, uh, styling woes in general kind
04:24of helped me find my own way.
04:28And then when, I don't know, I was about 10 years into my career doing my own little hybrid
04:34methods, I learned a pretty digestible method that was based on dry cutting.
04:41And, um, those kind of melded together for what you, what you have now, how I approach
04:46curly cuts in general.
04:47Yeah.
04:48Curlies your neck and just shake out your hair.
04:49There you go.
04:50Okay.
04:51And then I'm going to have you roll up kind of slowly so I can see if I've missed some
04:54little bits here.
04:55Oh, yeah.
04:56Oh, yeah.
05:07That depends.
05:08Now which ones?
05:09Mm-hmm.
05:10Okay.
05:11So is there like a technique to clipping?
05:29I like to keep it simple.
05:30I like to just barely open them enough to where you can slide them in.
05:37Yeah.
05:38At the origin point of that grouping.
05:40You don't have to get super handsy with it.
05:42Yeah.
05:43You want to rest parallel to your scalp.
05:46So if you're clipping vertically, they're kind of up and down.
05:49If you're clipping up here, you want to slide them in to where they're sitting.
05:52Gotcha.
05:53Okay.
05:54So I just dried under the dryer and now we're going to finish up the styling.
06:05So I took the clips out.
06:07Right now I want to release this cast and get this a little bit off of your scalp.
06:13Okay.
06:14And then scrunch once more to get that back to its glorious self.
06:18So this is going to be easier for us to do when you're standing.
06:21So let's do that.
06:22All right.
06:23Cool.
06:24Get my finger to set your scalp.
06:25Give it a little tug.
06:27Make it under here.
06:28Do the same.
06:37So when you're cutting looser textures, like looser waves, is there anything special you
06:42do compared to tighter curls?
06:45So as far as cut goes, I think having elevation through the real estate of the crown, anywhere
06:52that's curved on the head, is really helpful to release that weight so that they can get
06:58maximum lift.
06:59What do you think, Grace?
07:01I like it.
07:02Okay.
07:03I'm feeling like it was where you wanted it.
07:05Yeah.
07:06Do you want to come up a little more?
07:07I wonder if I should live with it in a minute.
07:10Like keep it for now and then when I come back, if I want to go shorter and then I can go shorter.
07:15I use that hairspray all the time.
07:17I love it.
07:18And a dry texture and you can reuse it again tomorrow as far as not flaking, not adding
07:28a lot of product buildup on your hair.
07:30Cool.
07:31If you're not wanting to wet it again.
07:32Oh cute.
07:33So we elevated the back just a little bit.
07:36Yeah.
07:37Still keeping that nice, solid baseline there.
07:43Ever so slightly angled, only to make sure this doesn't feel so heavy when you're looking
07:47at it in profile.
07:48I love that.
07:49No graduation happening there really.
07:50Yeah.
07:51It's all kind of even with the rest of it.
07:53Oh yeah, this side looks really good.
07:54Yay!
07:55I love it.
07:56Thank you so much.
07:57You're welcome so much.
07:58Thank you for trusting me.
07:59Of course.
08:00Always.
08:01I love it.
08:02Alright y'all, this is my final look.
08:04I love it.
08:05I love the shortcut.
08:06I'm super excited to try styling it on my own.
