00:00Hey Naturally Curly World, I'm Nikki.
00:02And I'm Grace.
00:03Welcome to Watch and Go.
00:04So today we're going to be reviewing Dear White People Together.
00:08When you ask someone who looks ethnically different...
00:11What are you?
00:12The answer is usually a person about to slap the shit out of you.
00:16We need to come together at times like this.
00:18When are you going to wake up to your white privilege, man?
00:21I'm black.
00:26And these are the things we're going to be using.
00:28I'm going to be using the shampoo and conditioner from Anahasi.
00:33It's their Soothing Mint Clarifying Shampoo and Moisturizing Conditioner.
00:39And then I'm only going to be using one product for leave-in and styling.
00:43And it's the Controlled Chaos Curl Cream.
00:47And I'm going to also be using this shampoo because it's a clarifying shampoo.
00:51What is this?
00:53Ellucents Moisture Balancing Conditioner.
00:56Oyen Hairdo.
00:59Deva Curl Wave Maker.
01:02And Virtue Labs.
01:04Uplifted Volumizing Whip.
01:06This is turning into my holy grail.
01:08I use it almost every time I do anything.
01:10Grace, for someone with wavy hair, you sure have a lot of products.
01:13You know what?
01:14Catch me outside.
01:15Okay, so we're going to go wash our hair and we'll be back.
01:18We are smelling minty fresh.
01:19Are you going to detangle?
01:20I need to detangle.
01:21Yeah, I'm going to detangle.
01:22Okay, cool.
01:23And we can talk about Dear White People.
01:25I love Dear White People.
01:26I did too.
01:27I think it was great.
01:28There was all this initial backlash on Twitter and on social media.
01:29Yeah.
01:30Because some white folks didn't get it.
01:31I read an article that said a bunch of accounts were, like fake accounts were used to perpetuate
01:43the idea that the movie and the show would be unpopular.
01:45So they basically used all these fake accounts to troll all of the teaser trailers and stuff.
01:55So stupid.
01:56Yeah, so silly.
01:57The series on Netflix follows the movie sort of almost exactly.
02:04There's a light bright girl, kind of like me.
02:08I'm not biracial.
02:09She's biracial.
02:10And so she has this inner conflict of being light skinned and biracial, but she's down.
02:14She starts identifying more heavily as black in college.
02:16And then she has this big conflict because she starts falling for a white guy.
02:21And she's in a group of friends who are really proud of being black and pretty much only date
02:26within that group.
02:28So it's kind of a big problem when everybody finds out.
02:31He was almost hashtag woke bae.
02:33And so that was pretty cool.
02:35Some episodes are dedicated to the character and character development.
02:38And one of them was about Gabe and how he was, you know, down.
02:43Kinda.
02:44Woke.
02:45Kinda.
02:46But also his conflict of being the white face in a black space in a white space.
02:52That conflict was nice to see.
02:54Cause there was a lot of broskies.
02:56There was a lot of bros.
02:57Sam's the host of a show on the school's radio station called Dear White People.
03:01Where she basically is like, Dear White People, this is my problem with you.
03:06Dear White People, why do you do this?
03:08Can you not?
03:09You had your bougie blacks.
03:10There was a group called Black...
03:13It was B-A-F.
03:15So like Black A-F.
03:16You know what I'm saying?
03:17They seemed kinda, they seemed like they could be ho-tep.
03:19They could, I don't know.
03:20They were like the slam poets.
03:22Yeah, they were like slam, they were like extra blacks.
03:24And they were like there to make up the hashtags.
03:26Yeah.
03:27There was, this girl who represented, I don't know what she represented.
03:30She was like clueless black.
03:31She had a dog the whole time.
03:32She was like so weird.
03:34She was like the legally blonde of like the black people.
03:38Yes.
03:39She was legally blonde of the black people.
03:40Then you had like the black student units were kinda like tempered blacks.
03:43Like blacks you would identify with.
03:45You were probably a regular old black.
03:47And the black student units were regular blacks.
03:49Oh wait, did I talk about, what's the guy's name who had the roommate who was gay?
03:55Oh, Troy?
03:56Troy.
03:57Troy was, he's like your buckhead black.
04:02He's like, they kept calling him Tro-bama.
04:05Tro-bama, basically.
04:07He runs for school president and he wins and he's like a lady slayer and is just so charming.
04:16I would consider him your respectability politics black.
04:19So he's definitely your, they called him Troy-bama, which makes sense because he was from a family
04:24who kinda looked like they had, you know, they were educated, probably had a little bit of wealth.
04:27His dad was the president of the university.
04:30Or the dean or something.
04:31The dean of the university, which he has power.
04:33This black guy who's the dean of a white university, that's pretty crazy.
04:37So it was nice to see the diversity of black characters and blacks represented, because
04:42you really don't get that a lot in television.
04:45What do you think about the main character being mixed?
04:48Do you think it's a cop out?
04:50Uh, I initially thought the main character being mixed was a cop out.
04:53Cause I was like, oh, y'all have a show called Dear White People.
04:57And the person who is basically the star of the show and who's had the privilege enough
05:01to have a radio show on campus called Dear White People is the closest thing you can get
05:06to white without being white versus black.
05:08But then I, upon like seeing the complexity of the characters, I was like, okay, well this
05:12is nice how they developed it, including someone who's mixed race.
05:16You know what I mean?
05:17Because I don't think they would have been able to really weave in Gabe.
05:23They wouldn't have been able to call out colorism if they had, you know, a dark skinned girl
05:28leading it with a dark skinned friend.
05:30Although I'm all down for all black everything.
05:33Also at one point Coco gets mad at Troy and she's like, I'm smarter than you.
05:38I'm more ambitious than you.
05:39I was like, yes, Coco.
05:41She's like, I'm going to be, I'm going to be the president and I'm going to be looking
05:45back and I won't even remember you.
05:47And I was like, yes.
05:48The way she read Troy.
05:51We are going to go and diffuse our hair so we can look good.
05:57And we'll be back.
06:02All right.
06:03So should we rate it?
06:04Yeah.
06:05Okay.
06:06Should we say it at the same time?
06:07Okay.
06:08Yes.
06:09Ready?
06:10One, two, three.
06:11Five stars.
06:12I don't think it could have done better for like what it set out to do.
06:15Yeah.
06:16I thought it was, it did it so well.
06:18Let us know if you've seen it.
06:19It's on Netflix.
