00:00Hey, I'm Lauren, and today I'll be reviewing The Handmaid's Tale for our Watch & Go, a show where we review the show that we just recently watched while we wash our hair.
00:10I wash my hair with the AG Hair Care Cleansing Cream, and then I also mix it in with the DivaCurl One Condition Original Daily Cream Cleanser.
00:22And then from there, I'll be going into the Aunt Jackie's Not On My Watch Instant Detangling Therapy.
00:29I use the Brazilian Curly Cocktail by Mio Organics, and then I also mix this with the infamous Eco Styler Gel.
00:38I'll be detangling with the Curl Pro Wet Brush.
00:40So I'm going to go wash my hair real quick, and then when I come back, I can detangle.
00:46I had another name, but it's forbidden now.
00:51So many things are forbidden now.
00:53I know this must feel very strange.
00:59But ordinary is just what you're used to.
01:06My name is Offred, and I intend to survive.
01:12Margaret Atwood wrote this book about this super crazy dystopian society where pretty much the only point of women is to have babies.
01:25That's it. You just, reproduction, that's all you're good for.
01:29Throughout the TV show, there's a main character, Offred, who is played by Elizabeth Moss, which, I kind of forgot she was an actress, but I'm glad she resurfaced.
01:39Offred literally means, uh-fred, who is her commander in the show.
01:43Elizabeth's purpose is to have babies for the commander and his wife.
01:50To me, it started off really, really dark, because the second episode involves, like, some surgical mutilation.
01:58Yeah. I know, right?
02:00Once you get past that, you just kind of see Elizabeth or Offred's story into, um, into how she's trying to break free, uh, what the commander is doing to her, how their relationship progresses on.
02:12Then we also have Samira Wiley, who is, uh, Offred's rebellious friend of some sorts.
02:18This is all in the future.
02:21Right.
02:21This is all in the future.
02:23It does, it, uh, does, like, repeated flashbacks in the past, but that's when she was free, and she could have her own bank account, and she could work for herself.
02:35So, yeah, say the community is 30 people, only five of those women would be handmaids, so there's only a select few of handmaids.
02:45Throughout the show, you see June, aka Offred's, struggle into trying to become a free woman again, which, becoming free involves, um, immigrating to Canada.
02:57Pretty much the handmaidens, no man is supposed to lust after them, even if you are a commander or not.
03:02And if you do, then you will be killed, and the handmaidens have an entire ceremony where they come, and they circle you, and they beat you to death.
03:12Oh, their baby-making situation is really crazy, because the Martha sits on the bed, and the handmaiden sits in between her legs, and then the husband does his act with the handmaiden, but it's simulating as if it's the Martha who he's doing it to.
03:30And then when they give birth, the Martha is sitting in a chair, the handmaiden is sitting in her legs, like, giving birth, and the Martha is pushing and making these sounds, as if she's giving birth also.
03:43And, yeah, it's, and then after they give birth, they're just like, okay, take her away, like, we don't want to see her anymore.
03:51The craziest part about all of it is that this government regime that was created, this entirely super religious, take the words from the Bible verbatim, was created by a woman.
04:04I have finished detangling my hair, and now I will be using the curl cream and the Eco Styler gel, um, to kind of put some definition into it.
04:15Even though the show is really dark, they try to end, like, every episode with a really upbeat song.
04:21It's like, hey, I'm gonna destroy you emotionally for the next 50 minutes, and then at the end, I'm gonna make you feel really good about it.
04:29So, overall, I'd give Handmaid's Tale probably a, I'd give it five stars.
04:36As a newcomer coming in who had never heard of Margaret Atwood before, never heard of Handmaid's Tale before, the show was incredibly captivating.
04:45The entire color scheme that they used to film it was really awesome.
04:48Yes, it was extremely dark, and I was probably mildly depressed after watching a couple episodes, um, but overall, I would binge it again.
