30 January - National afternoon forecast presented by Alex Deakin.
Transcript
00:00Welcome to your latest update from the Met Office. Still plenty going on with the weather at the moment.
00:05We've still got more rain to talk about. Met Office yellow warnings in place.
00:09It's a real mess, the view from space. One line of cloud has been pushing its way northwards.
00:15This little swirl that's now coming into the southwest, providing not just wet but also quite windy conditions for a time.
00:21But it's really the rainfall that's most likely to cause some problems because of the soggy conditions that we've seen over the course of this year, really.
00:30But the strong winds picking up, pushing that rain in, likely to cause some further flooding issues in the far southwest.
00:37Also got this zone of rain tracking slowly north. There's not just rain mixed in with it.
00:40A bit of snow really confined to the hills and mountains of eastern Scotland by the end of the day.
00:45And it does turn a bit drier over northern England. North Wales, parts of the Midlands may even see some brightness through the afternoon.
00:52The rain's slowly easing in Northern Ireland as we head through the day as well.
00:56Quite a contrast in temperatures. Four or five degrees on the east coast with that brisk and chilly wind and the rain.
01:02That feels pretty miserable. Further south, well, not exactly cheery, but some places could reach double digits.
01:07Obviously, it doesn't feel like 10 or 11 Celsius with the wind and the rain.
01:11That arch of rain then pushes northwards. Heavy bursts for South Wales and southwest England.
01:16A lot of spray, a lot of surface water on the roads if you're heading out through this evening.
01:21That rain tracks its way northwards through the night into parts of northern England.
01:25It stays pretty soggy in eastern Scotland, largely dry in western Scotland.
01:29And it makes it a dry night for Northern Ireland, so things drying out here a little bit.
01:33Showers then swirling around. You can see that area of low pressure just by the way the winds are tracking around
01:39and the cloud and rain is wrapped around it. It might be a little bit further north, actually,
01:43which would push the rain a little further north as we go through the night and into tomorrow.
01:48It all adds up to a fairly mild night. Most places start the weekend four or five degrees above freezing in the south,
01:54seven or eight Celsius. So we've still got the swirl.
01:57We've still got a lot of cloud and further outbreaks of rain, basically, for Saturday.
02:00This zone of rain, as I said, could be a bit further north with the track of that low just pushing a bit further north.
02:07Northern Ireland, western Scotland looking largely dry through Saturday.
02:11And Wales and south-west England should cheer up as well, hopeful for some sunny spells poking through here
02:16for the afternoon as the zone of rain tracks eastwards.
02:19So maybe after a dry start, east angle in the south-east turned quite soggy to end the day.
02:24Still quite a cool wind blowing along some of those coasts across the far north-east,
02:29but generally a bit milder for northern England and southern Scotland,
02:32seven or eight degrees. And again in the south, particularly if it does cheer up,
02:36could reach those temperatures of nine or ten degrees.
02:39Those numbers about average for the end of January and the early part of February.
02:45As for Saturday nights, well, further outbreaks of rain to come across eastern parts of England
02:49and eastern Scotland.
02:51Still a bit of snow over the tops of the hills, but mostly it will be rain.
02:55Elsewhere, it does turn a bit drier for a time.
02:57And that is a sign, as we go into Sunday, the low pressure that's bringing the wet weather
03:01over the next 24 hours kind of fizzles out and most areas looking a bit drier.
03:05But notice there is a weather front pushing in from the west.
03:08This will be quite a weaker fare by the afternoon, but certainly in the morning,
03:11providing some outbreaks of rain for northern Ireland and into western Scotland.
03:16More fragmented, the rain further south.
03:18So some patchy, showery rain for Wales and hopefully not too much in the south-west,
03:22where, again, it has been exceptionally wet of late.
03:25It does look as if it's going to be a drier day on Sunday for many eastern parts of the UK as well.
03:30So turning a little drier, but there is more wet weather to tell you about as we head into next week.
03:35Temperature-wise, Sunday, again, about average for the time of year, maybe 7 to 10 degrees Celsius.
03:41As I said, more wet weather is likely into the early part of next week,
03:44so do keep up to date with the forecast.
