00:00Our guest on this program is Mr. Adnan Öztaş, the Mayor of Sandıklı Municipality in Afyon.
00:05Hello Mr. President, welcome.
00:08Hello how are you?
00:10Thank you very much, Mr. President. I hope you are well too.
00:14Thank God we are also doing well. We will continue to work and strive, God willing.
00:17Yes, may God make it easy for you.
00:19Mr. President, Sandıklı is famous throughout Türkiye and the world for its hot springs.
00:24But he also has a different perspective on agricultural production.
00:30Could we please hear it from you?
00:34Of course, Sandıklı is the largest district of Afyon Karayeser.
00:38Of course, being the largest isn't just about population.
00:41Here, in terms of thermal springs, tourism, and agriculture, it is one of the largest districts of Afyon Karayeser.
00:46Agricultural activity is particularly intensive in our region.
00:51So, potato production is carried out very intensively in our region.
00:56These winter varieties, which we call agriya, are generally sown.
01:00Many of these are sold in the Istanbul market.
01:04And in our region, there is also very intensive work being done in agriculture and animal husbandry.
01:09We also have technologically advanced greenhouses in our region.
01:12So, in Türkiye, according to the 2025 data, there are currently 2,200,000 m² of this in storage.
01:25Tomato cultivation using technological, soilless greenhouse methods.
01:28In these, we, as the municipality, provide the heating system.
01:34So, this district in Türkiye has huge export potential.
01:38We are a district with great potential in agriculture.
01:41In our 2,200,000 m² greenhouse, we obtain a yield of approximately 50 to 55 tons, or even 60 tons per 1000 m² in our technologically advanced greenhouse.
01:53These are generally sold abroad.
01:57Russia, Germany, and many other European countries are approximately where we are from here.
02:01When we evaluate it this way, Sandıklı is a district with very high agricultural potential.
02:06We also appreciate its value.
02:07I also come from a family that made its living through agriculture.
02:11That's why I do it myself as well.
02:16How nice.
02:16Wheat, barley, and sugar beet are grown in many of our districts.
02:21And 60% to 70% of the district's population is engaged in agriculture.
02:28Our potential is really very high in this sense.
02:31Mr. President, we're talking about climate change, we're talking about drought.
02:37What is the situation like in Sandıklı, Afyon right now?
02:40Of course, there is the drought, and our environment minister is working very hard on this issue.
02:46Our Minister Burak Kurum.
02:48So, drought is no longer just a problem for our district, but a major problem for Türkiye and the world.
02:54We are struggling more with providing drinking water to our people in municipalities than with using water in agriculture.
03:01Because winters don't feel like winters anymore.
03:04Unfortunately, it's not snowing.
03:06One of the most important sources for replenishing groundwater is sufficient snowfall in winter.
03:13So, because the rains fall so quickly, our underground water resources aren't being replenished unless it snows.
03:20Of course, we are experiencing very intense problems related to this as well.
03:24So Afyon and Karahisar are the regions most affected by this drought.
03:28Our minister has many projects underway.
03:30But to combat the drought, our ministry canceled all of them in a flood irrigation project.
03:38We are now in a period where this type of irrigation is prohibited.
03:41We have many initiatives to conserve our drinking water.
03:45We've moved on to contoured accounting.
03:47Because there's a difference in consumption even between normal and metered metering systems.
03:51For example, we have a heating system.
03:53We heat 80% of the building with geothermal energy.
03:56In previous periods, there was a fixed system, a payment system based on square meters.
04:06With the payment system working this way, our citizens have the following problem.
04:10She would open the window when it got warm inside the house.
04:13It was to cool down, but we've now switched to a contoured system.
04:19What is this guy doing in the contoured system?
04:22It's turning off its contour, meaning it's saving money.
04:24Therefore, the ministry has a study regarding irrigation.
04:29There are many studies on the delayed attachment of these underground detention devices.
04:34We also believe that these will be an important benefit in terms of protecting underground detention facilities.
04:41Regarding these agricultural machinery, Sandıklı is actually a district municipality, although it is a district.
04:49It is also well-known for its production of agricultural machinery.
04:55Could you provide some information on that topic as well?
04:56You organized an agricultural fair. It also became one of the most important fairs in Türkiye.
05:03How about associating it with it, combining it?
05:06Of course, our region is on the southern side of Afyonkarahisar.
05:10We are a district that serves as the center for many other districts here.
05:15Above us are the central districts of many towns such as Sinan Pasha, Hocalar, Kızılören, Dinar, Başmakçı, and Evciler.
05:22There was an agricultural fair here last year.
05:24Over 200 companies participated in the Agricultural Fair.
05:29Despite the fact that the participating companies were not in season, meaning it wasn't the right time to buy or sell agricultural equipment.
05:35They said that the agricultural fair held in Sandıklı was the one where the most trade took place, that it was a fair.
05:43They made a request to reschedule the event to a more convenient time.
05:46We will also be holding an agricultural fair this year, which we hope to organize for the second time in May.
05:53Our potential here is very high.
05:55We have many businesses that produce agricultural products for the fair.
05:57Here in Turkey, we have many factories that produce baling machines, corn harvesting tables, potato planting and harvesting machines.
06:06These are not just companies operating in Sandıklı, but also those exporting to Türkiye and abroad.
06:13In that respect, Sandıklı is a district that also makes a name for itself in terms of agricultural machinery.
06:19In that regard, we, as municipalities and local governments, are trying to support these productions as much as many industries come here.
06:26Mr. President, is there a slaughterhouse in Sandıklı?
06:29Yes, we have a slaughterhouse belonging to our municipality.
06:33On average, although our slaughterhouse isn't very large, we slaughter between 10 and 15 head of cattle daily.
06:41Our slaughterhouse also serves the butchers and citizens in this area.
06:48So, in this respect, our municipality is a very unified municipality.
06:52So, it's a municipality with a very strong population and economy.
06:56We have thermal tourism, we have hot springs.
06:59We have two hotels owned by our municipality.
07:01Our guest accommodation capacity is approximately 1500 people per day, and this is a capacity that belongs to our municipality.
07:08We are currently in a period where thermal tourism is at its peak.
07:11Both because it's the semester break and because it's a time when thermal baths are enjoyable in winter.
07:16We are a resort where all our facilities are fully booked for 8 months of the year.
07:21We are offering our citizens more affordable opportunities to benefit from thermal tourism.
07:25So, looking at the regional pricing policy, both our hotels and apartments offer the most affordable options in the region, and these are places with healing waters.
07:37We are pleased that we are providing these services for the benefit of our citizens without any hesitation or malice, ensuring that our citizens can utilize all kinds of thermal resources, especially in the Antalya, Mersin, and Isparta regions where we have a very high concentration of people.
07:52When we listen to the people who come here, many of our current guests staying at our thermal spa, we see that some have been regular customers for about 20 or 30 years.
08:05We are having difficulty accommodating new customers.
08:07We are in a region where the thermal waters are truly very hot and have excellent healing properties.
08:12God Almighty has bestowed a blessing upon every region.
08:15Geothermal energy has been a blessing for our district as well.
08:18We are also striving to pass on this blessing to future generations.
08:22We have a particular application in our heating system, let me tell you about it.
08:27We extract hot water from underground.
08:31We are providing heating for 19,000 subscribers in this area.
08:35We manage the water returning from here centrally and send it to our greenhouses.
08:41We use this recirculated water to heat the greenhouses again.
08:45We also reinject the water extracted from the greenhouses back into the ground.
08:48We are reinjecting our water.
08:50Therefore, a natural pathway has been created.
08:52Instead of releasing the water we extract from underground into raging rivers, we return it back underground.
08:58By being reheated in the hot magma layers beneath the earth, our water,
09:02So we're operating the water system within a closed state system.
09:06So, in Türkiye, this is an exemplary project implemented in the ballot box system.
09:09So, mayors came from Denmark, and delegations from the Minister of Energy came.
09:16To examine the heating system in the box.
09:18We even held a ballot box at the Energy Cities Association meeting.
09:22200 of our mayors came.
09:24We explained the system in detail.
09:25This system should serve as an example for Türkiye.
09:28Because we must return all the water we extract from underground back into the ground to preserve the natural balance of nature.
09:37We are striving for that as well.
09:38Hopefully, Sandıklı municipality is running its operations very smoothly in this regard.
09:45How nice.
09:46Thank you very much, Mr. President.
09:48Sandıklı truly shines like a star in Afyon.
09:52Your explanations were also very interesting.
09:55Egristiz is an international organization operating in 24 countries.
10:00You are also a very valuable agricultural leader.
10:03As the agricultural leader of Afyon, and as the agricultural leader of Sandıklı, you are a valuable member.
10:08I also take this opportunity to convey the greetings of our esteemed Union President, Mr. Doğru İbrahim Altay.
10:13Here you go.
10:14Wa alaikum salam.
10:15A type of potato called "winter potato" is grown in our district.
10:20In Istanbul, at market stalls and bazaars, you won't find potatoes for sale unless they're labeled "Afyon" or "Sandıklı yellow potatoes."
10:30So, this is a type of potato that's especially suitable for frying, it doesn't hold oil, and it's very unique to our region.
10:39So this type of agriye is not only grown in Sandıklı, it's not grown in Afyon either.
10:42It is grown in many of our provinces, but the quality in Sandıklı and Afyon is unmatched anywhere else.
10:50First of all, it has a unique flavor, a distinctive characteristic.
10:52This is an agricultural region that has made a name for itself, especially in Istanbul.
10:58God willing, as children of farmers, we are doing our best to ensure that agriculture here becomes even stronger.
11:07How nice.
11:08Mr. President, you described it so beautifully that we would love to visit you with our presidents, just to taste those potatoes and feel the warmth of that water.
11:17With our member chairpersons.
11:18We absolutely must wait.
11:19I invited President Ibrahim.
11:21I am also a member of the Konya Municipalities Union.
11:24I am on the board of several municipalities associations.
11:27Hopefully, we will hold our council meetings and general assembly meetings here, hosting our guests and showcasing our geothermal water. We also have a mud festival.
11:40I forgot to mention that too, I should talk about it.
11:42We have time, right?
11:43Of course, please go ahead.
11:44Just a couple of minutes left, please.
11:46In Türkiye, we have a type of clay that is unique to Sandıklı.
11:49Joint pain, rheumatic pain, that's what we have here.
11:54Here, we put our customers through 8-minute or 10-minute mud sessions.
12:01And we've had many patients here who came from Europe in wheelchairs, completed a 15-day course, and left walking.
12:10In Sandıklı, we have geothermal water that is excellent for joint pain, eczema, and rheumatism.
12:19Many of our patients were also injured.
12:21We also have projects focused on protecting our water resources, in the event of injury.
12:25God willing, we will pass on this warm water to future generations and continue this tradition.
12:29How nice.
12:30Congratulations and best of luck, Chairman!
12:32Thank you very much.
12:33Thank you for your contributions, and I hope to see you again soon, God willing.
12:37Thank you very much.
12:37We also hope to see you in Sandıklı, God willing.
