00:00Well, the guy was in my corner. Yes, he would. But it goes further than that.
00:04If this type of fight takes place, it shouldn't be made. This type of fight should not be made.
00:09People are here paying a lot of money. They're here to see some excitement.
00:13They're not here. They did not come here to see a bizarre ending.

01:44Okay, back here at the MGM Grand Garden with Sugar Ray Leonard, I'm Jim Hill, your host.
01:53And we've got one more championship bout for you tonight.
01:55Now, I know it's getting a little bit late back on the East Coast, but the fight is really worth staying up for.
02:00WBC middleweight champion Julian Jackson defends his title against Quincy Taylor in a battle of really knockout artists.
02:06But before we get to that, Ray, I want to get your opinion and your thoughts on the first two championship fights here tonight.
02:12WBC lightweight fight, Miguel Angel Gonzalez against Lamar Murphy.
02:16Well, the Gonzalez-Murphy fight was a very interesting fight.
02:20Whereas that I saw that Murphy won that fight.
02:23He put out more heart, more punches.
02:25He was the winner, but although he did not get the decision.
02:27In the WBA heavyweight championship, Bruce Seldon held on to this title against Joe Hipp.
02:32Well, a rather boring fight. Didn't expect too much from Joe Hipp.
02:36And Bruce Seldon really disappointed me because I expected more to see more of him like he did against Tony Tucker.
02:43A little more aggressive.
02:44Yeah, and a disappointment in the main event, Tyson, against Peter McNeely.
02:47We learned absolutely nothing, or did we?
02:50We learned nothing at all. I mean, the fight didn't last long enough.
02:53In fact, McNeely's corner decided to stop the fight prematurely, which was a shame.
02:58Okay, Ray, thank you so very much.
02:59Well, fans, we have to tell you about another innovative program move by King Vision and Showtime Event Television,
03:04presenting our main event as a third bout of our quadruple header.
03:08This allowed you viewers back on the East Coast to see the long-awaited return of Mike Tyson before the midnight hour on Eastern Time.
03:15Now, for those of you night owls and avid boxing fans back East,
03:18we want you to stand by right now because we have one more championship fight for you coming up,
03:23and it's going to be a very good one.
03:24We're going to talk about right now our finale features one of boxing's most exciting fighters,
03:29WBC middleweight champion Julian Jackson.
03:32This knockout artist from the Virgin Islands is a mild-mannered man outside of the ring
03:36while being a formidable bird of prey between the ropes.
03:40Tonight, Jackson faces the challenge of a man who has some impressive knockout credentials of his own,
03:45NABF champion Quincy Taylor.
03:47Coming up, the last feature of the evening, the WBC middleweight championship, Jackson versus Taylor.
03:54Once again, let's go back down to ringside for this middleweight shootout, and here's Steve Albert.
03:58Steve.
03:59Thank you, Jim.
03:59Julia the Hawk and Jackson recaptured the WBC middleweight title with a convincing second-round TKO
04:04over Agostino Cartamone this past March, a title Jackson held from November of 1990 to May of 1993.
04:11Then he ran into Gerald McClellan, who stopped him not once but twice.
04:14The first was a fifth-round TKO, but in the rematch, the once-powerful Hawk was really humbled,
04:19losing via first-round stoppage.
04:21Many felt it was time for the Hawk to soar into retirement, but despite the critics,
04:25Jackson, a three-time world champion, felt he still had something left.
04:28In his prime, Jackson arguably was the hardest puncher pound-for-pound of the world,
04:32but age plus the wear and tear from so many ring wars can take their toll.
04:36Yet the Hawk perseveres.
04:38He's 34 now, and he's been written off more than once.
04:40But the man who has 47 knockouts and 51 wins with only three defeats
04:45is determined to be recognized not only in boxing circles but by the general public,
04:49something that has eluded him in spite of his success.
04:52As we bring back the fight, Dr. Ferdinand, where is Jackson now in his career?
04:56He's at the bend-headed toward the barn.
04:58If he doesn't win here tonight, then he can start thinking about a career change.
05:02And if he wins, he's got a very short time before he gets out.
05:05He's at the very end.
05:06And what do you expect here?
05:06I expect an explosion in which Julian will win.
05:10All right, as we go back to Bobby Chez.
05:12And, Bobby, does Quincy Taylor have the type of style to beat Jackson?
05:15Quincy Taylor's a fast, good-punching South boy, smart, and he's well-conditioned.
05:19These assets, along with his style, gives him an excellent chance to win here tonight.
05:22All right, Bobby, let's go right to the tail of the tape for this WBC Middleweight Championship.
05:29Ten-point much-scoring system, three scoring judges.
05:31No standing eight count, no three-knockdown rule.
05:34As we check out the rules as well, only the referee can stop the fight.
05:37A fighter cannot be saved by the bell except in the last round.
05:40If there's an accidental foul before the start of the fourth round, the fight is ruled a no decision.
05:44If it happens after the start of the fourth, they go to the scorecard.
05:48So here at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, moving right along, the WBC Middleweight Championship.
05:54Jackson and Tanner up to our ring announcer, Jimmy Lennon, Jr.
05:56Well, fans, we welcome you to our final world title featured attraction brought to you by Don King Productions
06:04and King Vision, along with Showtime Event Television, Corona Beer, and the MGM Grand.
06:11This bout is sanctioned by the World Boxing Council, the president, Jose Sulaiman,
06:15supervisor, Dickie Cole, along with the Nevada State Athletic Commission, the chairman, Dr. James Knave.
06:21And our judges, scoring this bout from ringside, David Chung, Jose Laurino, and Dave Moretti.
06:29And here's our referee in charge of this bout.
06:32He'll be giving instructions after the introductions, Jay Nadee.
06:37All right, fans, here we go with the WBC Middleweight Championship of the World,
06:42scheduled for 12 rounds of boxing.
06:45I present to you first the challenger on my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
06:50Wearing blue trunks with white trim, he is from Dallas, Texas,
06:55and fighting out of the last mountain training camp in Squim, Washington.
07:00He weighed in at 159 and a half pounds.
07:03His record includes 25 wins, three losses, with 21 of his wins coming by way of knockout.
07:10Here is the NABF champion, who is making his first attempt at a world title.
07:15Please welcome tonight's challenger, ranked the number two middleweight by the WBC, Quincy Taylor.
07:27And his opponent across the ring is the defending world champion on my left,
07:32fighting out of the red corner.
07:34Wearing white trunks with red and blue trim, hailing from and proudly representing St. Thomas in the Virgin Islands.
07:43He weighed in at the middleweight limit of 160 pounds.
07:47His record includes 51 wins, three losses, with 47 big wins coming by way of knockout.
07:54And here is the hard-hitting former junior middleweight champion
07:57and two-time WBC middleweight champion of the world.
08:01Please welcome Julian LaHawk Jackson.
08:09And once again, here's our referee in charge, Jay Nadee.
08:14All right, gentlemen, I gave you instructions in the dressing room if you have any questions.
08:24Just to go over it again, the navel to the hip bone.
08:26That's low.
08:28Nothing behind the ear.
08:30On 12 rounds of good, clean fighting.
08:33Obey my commands and defend yourself at all times.
08:36Let's go to work.
08:37Well, a good portion, a good portion of this crowd has departed with Mike Tyson out of the way.
08:47This man, Quincy Taylor, dubbed Baby Tyson for his KO ability.
08:50He's never been down, and he's fighting one of the hardest punchers the middleweight division has ever seen.
08:55And here he is, Julian Jackson.
08:57The chin and the leg is very questionable, but the Hawks says,
09:00this is like my boxing debut.
09:02In my mind, I'm challenging for the championship.
09:04He's had difficulty with southpaws.
09:06Taylor is a southpaw, but he feels he's much more prepared now than ever.
09:10The feeling is that this fight won't go very long because we have two knockout specialists,
09:15two hard-punching knockout artists.
09:18The later it does go, the tougher it could be for Jackson.
09:21You could have a real shootout here, Steve.
09:23Jackson is doing exactly what he said.
09:24He's going to take it to him like he's fighting for the title, like he's a challenger.
09:28He can run into something here, especially from the awkward angles that southpaw will give him.
09:31He's willing to take it, as we saw with McClellan, and when McClellan was with disastrous results.
09:36If this guy can punch anything like McClellan, he's got a chance to knock out Julian Jackson.
09:40You'll notice Quincy Teta with the bulky knee brace on his left leg.
09:46That's the result of a torn ACL.
09:52Taylor told us that Jackson will come out bombing.
09:56He'll try to take me out early, said Quincy Teta.
09:59I'll try to take it to the later rounds, but he says, I have a big punch.
10:03Sugar Ray Leonard can attest to that.
10:05He, uh, Sugar Ray in a sparring session years ago got rocked by this, uh, man, Quincy Teta.
10:10I was low. Keep your punches up, but don't grab his head.
10:12Jane 80, warning Julian Jackson about the low flows and grabbing of the head.
10:18Well, Jackson's coming out doing exactly what he said.
10:20Trying to unload bombs inside, body and head, ripping with that right hand in the hook.
10:24Boy, Julian punches such savage.
10:25Uppercut by Jackson to the midsection of Taylor, right above us.
10:32Jackson said the best punch against the Southpaw is the straight leadoff right hand.
10:36We'll see if he does that.
10:37I don't think Jackson knows how to throw a soft punch.
10:40I mean, he throws everything like he wants a ring post to fall down when he hits the mother.
10:44Well, somebody's bleeding a little bit already because it just got all over me.
10:47Looks like the bridge of Jackson's nose.
10:53Well, Quincy so far doesn't want to have any part of toe-to-toe with Julian Jackson.
10:57He is so far eluding and doing the best he can to get away from those big bombs.
11:01Maybe he's going to wait for Julian and his old legs to get tired.
11:04A lot of people have gotten starched waiting for Julian to get there.
11:08Quincy Taylor guided well in his corner by a Hall of Famer.
11:12Looks for the welterweight champion.
11:14There appears to be some blood on the bridge of the nose of Julian Jackson.
11:18It's not the corner of his eyebrow.
11:20Yeah, right there where the brow meets the nose.
11:22He seems to have a little cut.
11:24Not much insignificant.
11:25Can't do anything for this fight.
11:27The prevailing opinion about Jackson is he may not be shot, but he's not as good as he used to be.
11:33His legs pressionable, so is his chin.
11:36The last thing to leave, Steve, is the punch.
11:38He can punch.
11:39Well, he's also had bilateral detached retinas.
11:41He's flirting with inevitable blindness if he continues to fight over a long period of time.
11:47I would not like to see that.
11:48He's a wonderful guy.
11:49I'd like to see him go out in full control of himself.
11:53One of the all-time greats from the Virgin Islands.
11:55Under 10 seconds to go in the first round.
11:58And in his prime Jackson, overpowering powerful explosive KO power, particularly with his left arm.
12:09Give me that count.
12:11Come on.
12:12Sit down.
12:13Good.
12:14Relax.
12:15Okay.
12:16Relax.
12:17You're all right.
12:17You're all right, brother.
12:18Come on.
12:19Just relax.
12:19You're just laying back a little bit too much.
12:22All right?
12:22You've got to step your pace up by coming in.
12:25You're just sitting back a little bit too much.
12:27All right?
12:28Just stay a little busy.
12:29All right.
12:30Look at that when you get a minute, please.
12:31Okay.
12:33All right?
12:34Just be cool.
12:36Just keep punching.
12:37You're doing all right.
12:37You don't win the first round, all right?
12:39You need that jab a little bit more.
12:40You're coming in without punching.
12:42Roll.
12:42Remember, you can roll left hook right hand.
12:44Let me just take a look at it.
12:45All right?
12:45All right.
12:47All right, brother.
12:48All right?
12:49I need to look at that corner whistle.
12:50Hey, babe.
12:51Got you to help me?
12:51You see yours, man.
12:52He got it.
12:52Yeah.
12:53Yeah.
12:53We got it.
12:54Okay.
12:54Come on.
12:54Let's go away.
12:55Okay.
12:55Let's get that help, eh?
13:02Both corners are apparently happy with the work of their fighters.
13:05And we begin round two, scheduled for 12 for the WVC Middleweight Championship.
13:13And since his decision lost to Terry Norris in 1988, Quincy Taylor has really improved.
13:19Moving up the ladder, getting this title shot.
13:22But he is 32, so time running out on Quincy Taylor.
13:25He wants to get the job done now.
13:28He's fighting a smart fight right now.
13:29He's not sitting inside.
13:30He's not punching with Julian Jackson.
13:31He's not letting Julian punch all over him.
13:33He gets on the ropes, moves to the side, tries to counter.
13:35He's doing what he's supposed to.
13:37Taylor 25 and 3 with 21 knockouts, rated number 2 by the WVC and IVF.
13:42He's the NABF middleweight champ, Baby Tyson, for his knockout ability.
13:47Jackson 51 and 3.
13:48He's the champion.
13:4947 knockouts.
13:50A three-time world champion.
13:5110 and 3 in world title bouts.
13:53I never thought he got the recognition he should have had.
13:56I mean, I don't know why, because he's a good-looking guy and he fights well,
13:59and he's had a spectacular career.
14:01But somehow, they just, he fought in obscurity.
14:04I don't know why.
14:05You know, it always depends on the personalities and the divisions.
14:08And every once in a while, you'll get one or two to overshadow you.
14:12This night has been so long, I think somebody along the way mentioned that this had the ingredients
14:16of being the most competitive of the four fights.
14:20I thought it was.
14:21I thought it was going to be a war.
14:23So far, Taylor's chosen not to make it a war.
14:25But, uh, Julian's done his part.
14:27He's, he's dancing as hard as he can.
14:33And he thought Jackson would retire after his two losses to Gerald McClellan.
14:37But, he says he is not done yet.
14:40Lunging right hand there by Jackson, but no damage on Taylor.
14:45Taylor, good physique, very sturdy, solid body.
14:49He's never been down.
14:50Taylor's minimizing Jackson's effectiveness with that big stuff.
14:53And he's also scoring some punches of his own.
14:56It's not pretty, but he's effective.
14:59Hello.
15:00Taylor's got a good chin.
15:01You're going to have to have one against Jackson.
15:05And so far, Jackson has not been able to land anything really flush with all his full power.
15:10He's reaching for the blows.
15:11And Taylor's is just, just stepping away enough to diminish the power of doing this blow.
15:16He's got a good job.
15:18Billion Jackson, I want his first 29 fights convincingly, got his first title shot with Mike McCallum in 1986.
15:25Jackson's first major setback.
15:27He's only lost three times the other two to McClellan.
15:30It was a nice right-hand lead by Jackson.
15:32Landed pretty clean, but follow-up wasn't there.
15:34Once again, Quincy Taylor getting out of the way.
15:38Taylor, confident, calm, relaxed style at 32, a seasoned veteran has worked hard for this first shot of the world title.
15:44Taylor, Taylor in the blue trunks, the challenger, Jackson in the white, the champion.
15:53Well, in order to avoid this crowd from getting up and leaving en masse,
15:58Quincy better start fighting a little bit more exciting to fight because so far,
16:01these first two rounds have not set this public on fire.
16:05Great job, stop, stop, stop.
16:06Well, the crowd is very much at a numb stage right now.
16:18Many have left.
16:19They had over 16,000 strong for the Tyson-McNeely fight,
16:23but a lot of people very disappointed, let down.
16:26There was such a tremendous hype and promotion and build up to that fight
16:29for such a long time, and just like that, boom, it's over,
16:34and it ended in very, very disappointing fashion.
16:38You just didn't get to see Mike.
16:40You didn't get to see Tyson.
16:41He was overwhelmed by this guy, and then every time he shot a good punch,
16:46he knocked the guy down.
16:47You didn't get to see him fight.
16:48You didn't get to see him bob and weave and attack.
16:50All he did was counterpunch the guy into oblivion, and that was all.
16:54You came to see a good event.
16:56You saw an event, but you didn't see a good fight.
16:59Well, we have been saying all week that this is an event, not a fight,
17:01but I'll tell you what, McNeely made it a fight for one round.
17:05Had they let him go to the end, nobody could have criticized him.
17:08Well, in case you were wondering, McNeely made $5,455 per second.
17:15Round three.
17:16Not a bad minute in the hands of work.
17:19But who knows, they may take a lot of that away once they review the tapes
17:22of the Nevada State Athletic Commission because of the fashion in which it was stopped.
17:25I think they could find his manager in his hands.
17:27I don't think they could find him for their action.
17:29Oh, I don't think so either.
17:30I mean, I think they're fine.
17:31I think they'd be born glad to just forget that and let it sink into limbo of its own.
17:35What a shame it had to come today.
17:37You have a lot of people here, glossy eyed, just nodding their heads negatively.
17:45It should have happened that way.
17:46Anyway, this for the WBC Middleweight Championship has been rather uneventful.
17:53A lot of people thought that Jackson, including Taylor, would come out bombing, come out swarming.
17:58Maybe not like Peter McNeely did, but at least the way Julian Jackson knows how.
18:04Listen, Julian's trying as much as he ever tries to knock this guy out.
18:08It's Quincy that's content to fall back and fight a little dull fight.
18:12And unfortunately, that's not what we want to see here.
18:15We don't want more dulls.
18:17We want excitement.
18:18And we saw what happened in his last fight in Worcester in which he did not look good in the first round
18:24against the Italian Nagasino Cardamone.
18:26And then, boom, one punch.
18:27He put Cardamone down, came out of nowhere in the second round.
18:31Cardamone for one second was on top.
18:33The next thing you knew, he was on his back.
18:34That was a ferocious, vicious right hook to the jaw.
18:37The KO Cardamone.
18:39Midway round three.
18:42The life has been sucked out of this arena.
18:48It looks like we're on a ship that's been beached.
18:51Everybody's gotten off and just we're sitting here waiting for the crew to finish.
18:54The S.S. Poseidon.
18:55I'm going to pass out the no-dose.
18:58Really unfortunate.
18:59Well, that's unfortunate because Julian Jackson's always given such blazingly good fights.
19:03Darn it.
19:04I wish this was one of them tonight.
19:05I wish we could go out with a blaze of excitement.
19:07But don't give up hope.
19:08Everywhere that Julian Jackson, there's a possibility of a quick knockout.
19:12I wish I could go out with a big knockout.
19:14Crazy, crazy night.
19:16We thought that Lamar Murphy won that first fight to take the championship away from Miguel
19:20Angel Gonzalez and then a boring second fight for the WBA heavyweight champion.
19:24But in the second fight, three of the judges gave three rounds to him.
19:27I don't get it.
19:29Ridiculous.
19:29Well, that sums up tonight's night.
19:32Ridiculous.
19:33No, the best fight was the riot.
19:35That's true.
19:35After that.
19:36After the real fight.
19:37You're right.
19:38Lamar Murphy's people very upset.
19:40Under 30 seconds.
19:41Round three.
19:42Quincy Taylor beginning to open up just a bit now.
19:52Hearing it from his corner, Curtis Koch, one of the great champions.
19:59Final seconds, round three.
20:05There's the bell.
20:06Let's go over to Jim Graves.
20:07Thank you, Steve.
20:09I'm joined by Michael Sphinx, the former heavyweight champion of the world.
20:11Michael fought Mike Tyson back in 1988 in June.
20:15Lost in 91 seconds in the first round.
20:16Your thoughts on what happened here in the controversial ending?
20:20Well, it was going well for a minute.
20:22You know, the guy came out, proving his point, gave Mike some real rough tactics, which is
20:28a part of boxing.
20:29But the ending was kind of sudden.
20:34I mean, he got hit one time, all the punches Mike threw, to hit him, only one landed, which
20:39was the uppercut.
20:40And all of a sudden, his corner hopped in the ring and stopped the fight.
20:44But what would you have done and how would you have felt had your trainer done that to
20:47you?
20:48I'd have been kicking me, but now.
20:50Right now.
20:51You know, but I think Mills Lane, being that that's his arena, he controlled the ring.
20:57And if the man wasn't in bad shape, I don't think McNeely was in bad shape.
21:03Trainer's way out of line.
21:04Becky Owen for running in there, isn't he?
21:06Yeah.
21:06Because the same thing happened with Magic Taylor when Richard Steele stopped the fight
21:10with Julio Cesar Cervais and Magic Taylor.
21:14Lou Duva hopped in the ring while Richard Steele was in the ring.
21:20Mike, we've got to get back to the action right here.
21:22We appreciate you.
21:22Good to see you.
21:23Let's go back to Steve.
21:24All right, Jim.
21:26Michael getting all wound up there.
21:27Round four.
21:30Well, people are going to be talking about the unfortunate incident for a long time to come.
21:35Shame.
21:38Quincy Taylor's putting the putting together where probably the more effective of the punches
21:42is landing, moving, slipping, getting out of the way of some of Julian's bigger stuff.
21:46But right now, relatively uneventful fight.
21:48Left hook there by actually the straight left by Tanner, but a glancing blow as Jackson was able
21:53to duck away from it.
22:01Do you find it difficult to fight Southpaw's, Bobby?
22:03You know, I fought so many early in the 80s when I was in 160, 168 pound divisions.
22:09I don't care.
22:10They're fainting the, they're in sometimes.
22:13They're awkward.
22:13They're just confusing.
22:14It's hard enough because all their punches and your punches have to come from different angles
22:19and different counters, and it just sometimes is annoying.
22:23Now, Julian Jackson said he's ready for this Southpaw.
22:26He hadn't fought too many Southpaw's early on, but he's fought more later in his career.
22:30So, Bobby, I'm sorry.
22:33Since every fighter is going to be asked this question, and you are our fighter, I'm going to ask you the question.
22:37What would you have said to your corner man if he jumped in way before you were ready to finish fighting?
22:42Would you have words for him, or would you have just said thank you?
22:45I've already made it very clear that if they ever do that, they will fight with me on the spot.
22:49So, I don't expect it would happen.
22:51That's an answer, Bobby.
22:51That's good.
22:54Although, you know, McNeely didn't seem that upset or angered over at first,
22:59but I think once he starts thinking about it more and hears more about it and the commentaries that are going to come from me.
23:04When he reads all the papers tomorrow, he's going to get very mad.
23:07It's going to fester.
23:08If I'm going to go down, I'm going to go down like a man.
23:10You know, Taylor appears to be stepping up the accident.
23:15He just got off a nice little rally against Julian.
23:18He's won a round.
23:19He's coming on.
23:20He's just slow.
23:21He's not attacking.
23:23It's Julian that's doing the attacking.
23:24Oh, look at that.
23:25Good left.
23:25Straight left hand there by Quincy Tanner that got the attention of Julian Jackson.
23:29But it was so slow.
23:30It's a miracle it landed.
23:31It was like a lofting grenade.
23:33It wasn't really strong.
23:35It wasn't a zipping punch.
23:36He's quietly subduing Julian Jackson.
23:40Oh, there's a good uppercut.
23:43Left uppercut by a teller and an answer by Jackson.
23:46An uppercut from him and then a right.
23:48I think that's what Julian wants.
23:49He wants a mix-up.
23:52That's what he wants.
23:53He wants to be in there close.
23:54Oh, a left hook and down goes Jackson just above us.
23:59Julian Jackson is down.
24:01Stephen's head almost down to my left.
24:03Six, you okay?
24:04Seven, eight, you okay?
24:06Are you sure you're all right here?
24:07He gets up at eight.
24:08He's hungry.
24:08He's hungry.
24:08He can't be saved by the bell, except in the last round.
24:17Well, we were expecting an explosion.
24:19We got it.
24:20Let's go to the corner.
24:21There you go.
24:21Come on now.
24:23Come on now.
24:24Wake up.
24:25Wake up.
24:27All right.
24:28Come on now.
24:28Relax.
24:29Give me that dry count.
24:31All right, Julian.
24:32You ain't closing that gap.
24:33Remember, we weren't doing that in the gym?
24:35All right, you're laying back too much, all right?
24:38That was his thing.
24:40All right, let's take a look at this sudden and shocking turn of events.
24:44Now, that's a perfect left hand.
24:45And Julie, look at Julie.
24:47Delayed reaction.
24:47Down he goes, and there is Bobby Chips.
24:50Yeah, he almost landed right in my face.
24:53You watch it from the overhead angle.
24:54He hit some steps aside, right on the side of the head, the temple area.
24:58Julie never saw it.
24:58And as he comes through, he does almost wind up in my lap.
25:02And let's go super slow so you can really see the beauty of that punch.
25:05Because that was a perfectly landed punch.
25:07And this is what we talked about.
25:08Wang.
25:09Right on the jaw.
25:10Man, that was a good shot.
25:11And down goes Julian, almost sliding to where we were.
25:15Head fence first slide in the first base.
25:20Okay.
25:20Probably Jackson's caught a lot of moisture there, so they towel it off.
25:23Big knockdown at 253 of the round.
25:25Off the strong left hand by Quincy Tanner.
25:29Jackson almost didn't get up.
25:31Just made it.
25:32I think it's mandatory right now for Quincy Taylor to test to see if Julian Jackson is still hurt.
25:37Test to see how much trouble he may still be in.
25:39Well, you see, Julian's got a whole world of guts.
25:42So even while he's weakened and even while he's not in good shape, he will attack.
25:45So Taylor is smart.
25:47He should be able to test him really well now.
25:50Really put him to the test.
25:52Let him come in.
25:53Let go, let go, let go, stop.
25:54Go at him.
25:55Go here.
25:55Go here.
25:55Go here.
25:55Go here.
25:56Go here.
25:56Go here.
25:56Go here.
25:56Go here.
25:57Go here.
25:57Go here.
25:58Go here.
25:58Oh, another one that rocked at that time, a right hand, a right hook that rocked.
26:05Julian Jackson.
26:06Oh, left hook that nailed Jackson right out of the jaw.
26:10Similar move to last when he rocked, stepped outside to his right hand, bang.
26:13Straight left.
26:14You gotta back out.
26:16He's trying to tie him again, too.
26:17He's trying to tie him again, too.
26:18He's trying to tie him with that right hook on the way in.
26:19He's trying to tie him.
26:20Julian's not right.
26:20Julian's not right.
26:21Julian's not right.
26:22His legs are not working right.
26:23He is just his upper body is working right now.
26:25He's just his upper body is working right now, he's right for the take are.
26:50When he's very, very careful, he's not going to make any mistake here.
26:55Julian is so open now all he's got to do is time him right just a moment these
27:06eyes don't look good for you I can't see him because I'm closer to him and he
27:08just don't look good don't look clear he looks dazed he's fighting on instinct
27:16but you tatter being very patient waiting for his moment waiting for his
27:20opening you just get the feeling it could be coming there's the left uppercut
27:25there was when she came you see the start starting to come out of Julian
27:33Jackson's punch now he can't even load up where he wants to I don't think he can
27:37see the guy real good in
27:40Jackson just walking into the punches there's another left hook by Quincy
27:46Tanner and Jackson is hanging in there and comes back with a right cross
27:50Jackson lands a big right hand there and then a left hook by Jackson Bobby here
27:54comes the slugfest we talked about oh a left uppercut by Tanner it is toe-to-toe
27:59furious action I talked to Julian Jackson I said because you're so strong and
28:03powerful sometimes you forget about defense just walk your opponent he could
28:06that's been a problem in the past he's trying to correct it he hasn't corrected
28:10I have too late in his career to do that oh big left hook to the body by Julian
28:15Jackson now he goes to the party with the right straight right right uppercut
28:18left uppercut by Tanner and the end in a furious experience
28:24so much more you take it wake up wake up that's what I'm talking about come on now
28:31take your best off now you got him now you see how you hit him with that body
28:35Julian see when you don't lay back see what happens all right he's all right ain't
28:42nothing wrong you're taking some shots he's in all he's in a hell of a fight he's
28:45gonna fight yeah he's in a fight I don't want to take it too many now let's take a
28:49look at how Julian that gets in trouble again oh I mean what in the world held him
28:54up for that that was every bit as good a shot as the one that put him down now
28:57let's take a look at the uppercut Bobby later in the round in super slow motion
29:01this is really beautiful you get to see digs up underneath right between his hands
29:04clean crisp nice driving from the floor from his feet beautiful uppercut
29:14Quincy who started slow and certainly has this fight to win right in his hands right now
29:20in the days Julian Jackson still dangerous always dangerous but not the same as when the fight
29:26started Quincy Tanner continues to be very patient landing his big punches Jackson trying to load up
29:34on his famous power point please but he's missing for the most part round six get more for 12
29:40don't be one of those uppercut Steve right inside he just waits on Julian being comes in that big
29:44stuff sex ducks which is right up in between his gloves nice fighting by Taylor nice fun combination
29:53here and then digging to the body with that right uppercut is Julian Jackson move Taylor just missed the
30:00right uppercut and Jackson plowing forward the aggressor the problem start with Jackson's
30:08opponents when he starts to land those big bombs clean Taylor is minimizing that very very well
30:13actually with the left hook doubling up follows up with the right that fish Jackson showing a lot of
30:19heart after getting knocked down he's been a great champion sad to see him at the end of his career but
30:24boy he is still there as far as his heart I gotta have to let go of his head action just moving in
30:32and wailing away referee has little very little work to do here because both guys are just wailing
30:40away oh speaking of wailing away a left cross by Quincy Tanner right on the money you watch Taylor's done
30:47that three times he rocks to the side that's the right hand come by and turns his left to cross right
30:51over on Julian's jaw that one was even better than one before although the effects don't seem to be
30:56there this time Julian stayed up wild swinging a miss by Jackson with a left hook he comes right back at
31:03that center his game straight right there by Jackson connected
31:21that left uppercut by Taylor just raised and just this nice jab by Tanner
31:33He's out on his feet. Watch his right looking in the left hand at the top
31:38He's out one more could do it unless they step in right now. I'll tell you what he's out
31:42He's out on his feet. It's a shame to see
31:54He knows he just can't take the punch. We shook his head
31:57He just knows
31:58And the Julian Jackson quarter is irate screaming at Jane 80, but that's a good move by Joe
32:03That's a good move. He's at the end of his career
32:05There's no sense to send him off for some kind of injury when he doesn't need to he couldn't win this fight
32:10And he was just on the verge of going down. I think it's a very very good good judgment on the part of the referee
32:20Better think of some other way to make a living because this is no longer a place for Julian Jackson. It's no longer safe
32:25Well, you wonder if this is it for Julian Jackson
32:31It would probably be wise to hang up the gloves at this stage of a great career
32:36Well, we've now been sitting in these chairs together for 10 years and we can you have already learned one lesson in boxing
32:42They never leave. They never leave. No, we just won't leave peacefully
32:46I mean he will leave on a stretcher. That's what I mean
32:50I just won't prove it to him, but someone should talk to him. I think King should talk to him. There's no such thing as the word
32:55Retirement in boxing. All right, thank you. So Julian Jackson loses for only the fourth time in his career 51 and 4
33:06All right, let's take a look at how this round went is this is the first shot that got him in trouble
33:10I mean, you know, he's winging everything he's got he's and Julian's got no no control over his punch
33:15Look at that uppercut that uppercut landed right there. Could it drive him?
33:22You later in the run you can watch Julian's still trying to come there's that beautiful left cross
33:26I was talking about before he slipped to the side Julian misses the right over the top right on the gym
33:33And from the overhead shot, which is you see there there you see the shot just like Bobby said
33:38He just kind of moved over way to the punch goes by and then he landed his it was kind of a thing of beauty
33:43And he landed it many times. But when when Julian was in trouble, it was no sense in continuing. He was just really in trouble
33:50So Quincy Taylor
33:51wins the WBC middleweight championship in his first attempt at a world title
33:55He also may have sent the 34 year old Julian Jackson into retirement
34:01Quincy Taylor not exactly
34:03A household name
34:05All right, you see it as you see the end here Julian Jackson not returning any fire not offering up anything
34:09Other than the passive get out of the way defense. I think the referee did a good thing. He could have gotten her tailed out 26 and 3
34:21Champion
34:23Quincy Taylor
34:26So we are set for the official time let's go up to our ring announcer Jimmy Lennon jr
34:31All right
34:36Ladies and gentlemen, we have the time of two minutes 33 seconds and round number six a referee in charge
34:43Jay needy stops the contest
34:45He's the winner by way of technical knockout and he is the new WBC middleweight champion of the world
34:53Quincy
34:55Taylor
34:57The baby Tyson is the new WBC middleweight champ
35:11With a stoppage of Julian Jackson at 2 33 of round number six in our final fight of the evening
35:22So a good night for Quincy Taylor
35:24And you have to speculate as we've mentioned before that this could be it
35:31For the once mighty champion
35:33Julian Jackson who may finally hang up the gloves he falls to 51 and 4
35:41Right now standing by with the new champion is the fight doctor pretty
35:45A new champion. How does that sound to you?
35:47Oh, it sounds great
35:48First of all, I'd like to give thanks to my lord and say to give me an opportunity to be able to
35:52Put on one performance and thank Julian Jackson being the one of the champion that year
35:56All right, Julian Julian, we have said you've had a brilliant career you consider backing it after this
36:03Um, I think about it. I mean you should think about it seriously. Can you take that from a friend?
36:08I'm a friend of yours, please
36:10You cannot I'm gonna let the best man decide enough guy. Yes, that's a very good man to decide that
36:16Uh, did you find that you were landing a left hand that was just a thing of beauty
36:20Did you think you'd knock him out with that left and he kept repeating it?
36:23Well, uh, I thought I feel like he could take a shot if I hit him with it he didn't go nowhere
36:28But I said if I just sit down on one
36:30If I sit down on one I'll come back and hit throw hit a good left hand sit down on it
36:33And he might go the man that you refer to
36:35Curtis is curtis cokes one of the great welterweight champions who knocked the stuffings out of a guy
36:39I had named louie rodriguez
36:41What did you teach him that that showed him this kind of power to knock out a julian jack?
36:45Well, he's got good turn. He's got good shoulder movement. He turns his hips when he throws the punches
36:49He's always relaxed and he's always a pinpoint puncher. So that makes a difference
36:53Julian at the very end you were you were just rocky
36:56Did you think that fight should have been stopped at the beginning because you really didn't have any place to go?
37:00well, um, I felt that I could continue because uh
37:04He was really quick
37:05You know i'm saying and um I saw the punches but uh he caught me uh some good shots take a look if you want to see something
37:11Bad about the first night where you go sliding in the second base here watch this
37:16You miss and watch this beautiful counter shot bang now watch the way you go sliding in the second base
37:23I couldn't get my foot in man
37:27You know he he is pretty good but uh uh
37:30Not as hard not as hard as uh other fighters have faced, but yeah, he's pretty good. He's pretty quick very elusive
37:37And um, I think you're gonna be a good champion. Well, all right
37:40All right, we we have a mention once before that you should retire
37:43Let's leave on the note that we hope you retire. It's up to god
37:46You said and you want to have any final words on that
37:52For current stock quote information call city line at 843-6060 and enter category 1010 for the stock quote hotline
37:58A service of kobtv4
38:05People here at someone's bank say that I like helping others
38:09All right, thank you very much ferdy as the crowd files out
38:14after julian jackson is dethroned by quincy taylor
38:18And once again, we're set to turn things over to our fight expert bobby chez for his perspective of what we just saw
38:25Our last fight with the assistance of the telestrator bobby, what do you have?
38:28Well, what we're going to do is we're going to show you that the uh knockdown the first uh in the first knockdown
38:34What happens here is quincy taylor's the sophomore so his power is on this side here
38:38He steps over to the side
38:40He steps over to the side right over here
38:43Julian jackson fires a right that misses he counters with a right with a left cross and watch him go down to the canvas
38:48Almost in my lap he steps to the left
38:52Fires that right over the top
38:55Lands right on the jaw
38:57Once again julian jackson goes down and I almost catch him
39:00So there it is counter punching yep
39:11How about your final thoughts do you think that uh jackson should uh finally hang him up?
39:16Yes, steve, I think that the amount of punishment he's taken over the years the gym wars combined with the fight wars
39:21He's taking his toe and I don't think there's much left. I don't want to see him get hurt
39:24Yeah, plus uh, you know the eye problems. He's got the detached retina. He he seemed very glazed very glossy eyed
39:30From the start of the fight actually. That's just it when a fighter has reached his limit of what he can take and what he can absorb
39:36And then easy punches just start to rock them. It's just a shame. What do you think of uh quincy taylor?
39:40Was this a case of him taking on a fighter at the end of his career?
39:44Uh, did he look impressive in your eyes? He looked good. He boxed smart
39:48Punched well used good combinations, but I'll tell you what he did take a man on the end of his career
39:52Want to see him against some of the younger talent up and coming, but I think he's still a very classy act and a good fighter
39:57How do you think quincy taylor would do
39:59Against the rest of this division do you think he's got an opportunity to unify this title?
40:03Well, I think you can fight with any of them right now
40:05Especially the fact that he's a southpaw good punching quick southpaw with excellent defense and good reflexes
40:10I think that puts him right in the hunt to do anything he wants and he's uh
40:1232 years of age
40:14I guess it's about time he finally got his first world title shot and he made the most of the situation
40:18That's true. It's late in the stage as they say. I know I'm 33 and I'm considered an elder statesman, which I don't like
40:22But a young broadcaster as we pointed out
40:25Many times that works for me. Well, I'm very impressed with your expertise on the telestrator
40:29It's the first time you've used it. You must have been a whiz at the old etch-a-sketch as a kid. Yeah, as a kid
40:33I did like that game, okay
40:35All right, we'll have more about our entire card a little bit later the controversial ending of our main event
40:40Mike Tyson and peter mcnealy right now
40:42Let's go back upstairs to jim hill for a final summary jim
40:46All right, steve. Thank you very much
40:47But before we go let us recap tonight's boxing quadruple header three world title bouts and a significant non
40:55All right, julian julian we we have said you've had a brilliant career you consider backing it after this
41:01Um, I think his family and friends. Hey, I went a whole round with this guy
41:06He knocked me out, you know, that's that's the thing that it hurts me that he can't turn to his fans
41:11I fought a whole round with iron mike and he knocked me out
41:14But boy what a fight while it lasted instead
41:17He's gonna say just when I was going good the guy stepped in and stopped me. What a shame
41:21I thought it was absolutely absurd just ridiculous even the referee mills lane
41:26Said that he was surprised that the corner stopped the fight
41:29There was any there wasn't a soul in this whole place. It wasn't disappointing including the kid mcnealy
41:34There wasn't anybody that didn't feel let down
41:36It was this expectation of a momentous event which just fuffers away into nothing because some guy
41:42Had the mistaken judgment to go and save his fighter. He doesn't belong in boxing if he's gonna save his fighter
41:47What do you mean save his fighter?
41:48He's fighting for the heavyweight championship of the world and he's got a shot with it with wings. Hey, well, i'm sorry
41:53It wasn't the heavyweight champion. It felt like it every time tyson fights. Yeah, I that's a miss
41:58It's a 10 round fight, but he had
42:00History in his hands. He could have he might have he would have but he didn't get a chance mills lane
42:04Of course had the obligation of officially stopping the fight ruling it a disqualification when the uh, the corner people of uh
42:11of peter mcnealy stopped
42:13Stopped the fight, but you got the feeling it was pretty obvious that uh peter mcnealy
42:18Wanted to continue you know, he's probably gonna get his head handed to him eventually
42:22But he wanted to continue. He should have been allowed to continue at that. Yeah, to paraphrase what mills lane said
42:26He said he was okay. He was well enough to fight
42:28He's probably gonna get knocked down again, which makes the fight be over
42:31But he has to have his chance. He has to have his chance at glory
42:35There is no more glory than what he had in front of him tonight
42:38Okay, so a wild and wacky and bizarre night comes to an end
42:41It's shameful because of all the buildup and the hype and the promotion and uh, you know
42:47Over 1200 media credentials millions of people two billion. They say worldwide
42:52All over the universe tuning in to see
42:55What should have been a more exciting situation just a shame but had to end on this note
42:59I agree with you steve. I want to see what the papers say tomorrow about mike about mcnealy
43:04I think I saw remnants of the mike of old. He got put in an awkward situation to a guy who comes right at him
43:09Who's barroom brawling him little head butting shoving him with his forearms and his hands and ropes?
43:13You know, it's one of those things the rest of the card
