00:00Once you start walking through your puns and winning, you just start thinking that, you know, nobody out there can touch you.
00:11It was supposed to be another easy title defense for the fighter generally regarded as one of boxing's best.
00:17But when WBC Super Waterway Champion Terry Norris met Simon Brown almost one year ago, the unthinkable happened.
00:24Quick left and down goes Norris.
00:26Good right hand by Brown. He's just letting it all hang out. This could be his last stand.
00:32And he's coming through that ball.
00:34And look at this. Norris is stunned. Lovely as he goes to the corner.
00:42He's only lost three times in 39 fights, Terry Norris.
00:46Oh, he's got it. He's got it. Right hand. Terry Norris is down. And this might be it. Can he get up?
00:52It was a humiliating performance and devastating defeat for a fighter who believed he was the best in the world.
00:59And for the rematch, he trained as he had never trained before.
01:04I tried to do everything I could. I must have trained like three months for that fight.
01:09And I just constantly, it wasn't just physically, you know, sparring or working out.
01:15I'd be somewhere talking to Dan. We'd be out fishing. I'd be talking to Dan about the fight.
01:20We'd be out swimming and talking about the fight. I was into that fight. I was really into it. I wanted to beat Simon Brown.
01:25Five months later, eager for revenge, Norris entered the ring for his rematch with Simon Brown.
01:31When I stepped into that fight, I told my dad, I said, I want to win every round. I want to beat him to the punch.
01:36I want to make sure that he believes when he steps out of his ring that I really beat him. And I really can beat him.
01:45That was Norris. Norris just throwing everything in round.
01:50A winner by unanimous decision, that new champion terrible.
02:19Terry Norris.
02:24I think that's the greatest feeling of all time for me to be able, especially for the second time,
02:28let's come back off the knockout and come back and won a world title.
02:32Now, with his belt regained and reputation redeemed, Norris resumes his quest to prove he is boxing's best.
02:40The one I really want the most, I think, would be Widdersen.
02:44And not only for the money, but I want to prove, you know, that pound-to-pound thing.
02:49And, you know, I want to shut him up completely.
02:51You know, I don't believe he's pound-to-pound the best fighter in the world.
02:54And then I'd like to unify the title.
02:58But before he meets Whitaker or becomes the first in 19 years to unify the super runaway title,
03:04he must not forget the lessons learned from his loss to Simon Brown
03:08and get past tonight's opponent, Luis Santana.
03:12I learned from, in the first fight with Simon Brown, not to be overconfident.
03:17And in the fight with Luis Santana, I believe that, you know, I won't underestimate him
03:22and I won't be overconfident.
03:23At 34 years old, Santana is the most dangerous of opponents,
03:28as he has little to lose and everything to gain.
03:32This is the most important fight for me, because I've waited 22 years for this opportunity.
03:38God has given me the opportunity to go after this title.
03:42He comes out as a puncher.
03:45We didn't have a lot of boxing skills.
03:47He doesn't stick a move.
03:48You know, he's flat-footed.
03:50He stands in front of you.
03:51This is the last opportunity I have.
03:54This time I'm coming to fight like an animal,
03:56because if I lose, I won't fight again.
03:59And I'm not up to losing.
04:00I have to win.
04:02If I was 34 years old, I'd come out the same way,
04:06trying to knock him out, trying to hurt me.
04:08I think I can keep him off balance and hopefully outmaneuver.
04:18Terrible Terry Norris was certainly focused for his rematch with Simon Brown.
04:24But Norris must not be careful,
04:26and he must be careful not to make the same mistakes
04:28as he made in his past fights against opponents like Troy Waters
04:31and the first Brown matchup.
04:33So we will see if the WBC super welterweight champion in Norris
04:37can impress the boxing critics in his second reign as champion
04:40against the veteran Luis Santana.
04:43Norris versus Santana is next.
04:45Let's go back down to ringside once again.
04:47Steve Albert.
04:47Steve.
04:48All right, Jim, Terry Norris is back in the picture
04:51as far as best pound-for-pound fighter in the world
04:53by dominating Simon Brown as he intended to do from the opening bell.
04:57Not that he would take anyone lightly,
04:59particularly after what he's been through,
05:00but his opponent tonight has 15 losses,
05:03and this would be a major upset.
05:05So while Norris won't admittedly call this a tune-up, we will.
05:08Therefore, the burning question, who's next?
05:10Does Terrible Terry move up in weight or unify the titles?
05:13Does he fight Pernell Whitaker, Frankie Randall,
05:16the winner between James Toney versus Roy Jones,
05:18Jr., or the other champions of his division,
05:20Julio Cesar Vazquez or Vincent Petway?
05:23Conventional wisdom would say they're not exactly lining up so fast
05:27to fight Norris with that heavy-handed and unpredictable reputation
05:30and a man who has defeated numerous champions.
05:34Now, Norris' opponent tonight, 35-year-old Luis Santana,
05:37whose only previous crack at a world title, 1989,
05:40when he lost a decision to Simon Brown.
05:42He's also lost decisions to champions Crescento Espana,
05:45Vinny Pacienza, and Darren Van Horn.
05:47He certainly has the experience,
05:49but, Ferdi, is that enough against a guy like Terry Norris?
05:52Well, he's got the kind of experience I don't like.
05:54He's got the kind of experience of losing all the time
05:56against top-flight competition.
05:57Well, he's in the top-flight competition tonight.
06:00I think it's too much for him.
06:02I think he's way in over his head.
06:03Now, Santana has not had success at higher weights,
06:06while Norris has had his problems with focusing on lesser opponents.
06:09Bobby, what's your read on that?
06:11Well, Santana hasn't had great success at the top-notch levels
06:14in the lesser weights or in the bigger weights.
06:16He just hasn't gotten it done.
06:16But, he told me in a couple of interviews that we had
06:19that he has not had the chance to make weight properly.
06:22Short notice on the fight.
06:23A lot of weight to lose in a little bit of time.
06:25No preparation.
06:25He assured me for this fight, he's 100% ready.
06:27Win, lose, or draw.
06:29Now, for Terry Norris, he had two wake-up calls.
06:30Troy Waters in the first Simon Brown fight.
06:33Second Simon Brown fight is the new Terry Norris.
06:35I don't think we'll ever see the old Terry Norris again.
06:37I think the new one is here to stay.
06:39All right, Bobby, let's get our first look at the challenger right now.
06:4335-year-old veteran Luis Santana,
06:45who has not fought in exactly one year.
06:47He has lost seven of his last ten fights.
06:49Tonight, his second world title shot,
06:51the first in 89 when he fought valiantly,
06:53only to lose via decision to Brown.
06:55He is a two-time NABF welterweight champion
06:58who has gone the distance with some of the top contenders in the division.
07:00The only main fighter he's beaten, Sean O'Sullivan.
07:03Born in Romano, Dominican Republic,
07:05resides in New York, record of 38-15-2,
07:0829 knockouts, turn-throwing 81.
07:10And now here's the champion, Terry Norris,
07:14back on the throne after the brief overthrow.
07:16The 27-year-old Norris going for his 11th title defense overall,
07:20coming off the rematch,
07:21a win over Simon Brown this past May.
07:23So it's his first defense of his second reign.
07:26He avenged his 93 loss to Brown
07:28with that tremendous boxing exhibition to regain the belt.
07:31Terrible Terry, born in Lubbock, Texas,
07:33now lives in Campo, California,
07:35record of 38-4, 23 knockouts,
07:3712-2 in title fights.
07:40And those losses to Julian Jackson in 89,
07:43his first world title shot,
07:44and of course versus Brown in December of 93
07:46in Puebla, Mexico.
07:48That's a night he would like to forget,
07:50but he'll always be remembered
07:51as the man who permanently retired, Sugar Ray Leonard.
07:53Let's check the numerical breakdown,
07:55the tale of the tape.
07:56Norris at 27, eight years younger than Santana.
07:59Norris 5'9 1⁄2", Santana 5'10".
08:01Both under the 154 limit.
08:04Norris a svelte 151,
08:06Santana 152 1⁄2",
08:07and the reach, Norris 68 1⁄2,
08:09Santana 67.
08:12And to the WBC rules for this title fight,
08:1510-point bus scoring system,
08:16three judges scoring,
08:17no standing eight count,
08:19no three knockdown rule.
08:20Only the referee can stop the fight,
08:22and a fighter cannot be saved by the bell
08:23except in the last round.
08:25So here at the Plaza de Toros,
08:27Mexico getting set for the WBC
08:29Super Welterweight Championship,
08:31Terry Norris vs. Luis Santana.

11:30In his second reign as champion tonight,
11:32he is making the 11th defense of his title.
11:35Please welcome the WBC super welterweight champion of the world,
11:39Demos la bienvenida al campeón terrible,
11:43Terry Norris.
11:49Here is the referee, Mitch Halpert.
11:52Gentlemen, this will be a clean fight.
11:57Protect yourself at all times,
11:59propel my commands at all times.
12:00Will there be questions?
12:01I don't think so.
12:05So we're getting set
12:06for the WBC super welterweight championship.
12:09Terry Norris,
12:10when training for his rematch with Simon Brown,
12:12he'd watched tapes of the first fight
12:14with his hands blocking the top of the screen
12:16and the faces of the two fighters
12:18so he wouldn't see himself so humiliating.
12:20Of course, a different story in the rematch.
12:22Luis Santana says he'd like to get Norris
12:24out of his plan of boxing,
12:26get him to slug it out.
12:28Probably his only chance here
12:29is to make Norris fight toe-to-toe.
12:32And you know,
12:32it's something usually bad-blooded boxing
12:34press conferences are hype.
12:37But this past Wednesday,
12:38there was what seemed
12:39like a very real altercation.
12:42Santana, though,
12:42could be using this as a ploy
12:44to get Norris out of his game plan of boxing.
12:46Well, he said he planned to do that
12:47on three different occasions,
12:48and he did.
12:49He came out
12:50and actually tried to punch him
12:51just to get Terry mad out of him.
12:53Well, you know, Terry's a pro.
12:55I mean, he is here to fight
12:57and to put in hard punches.
12:59You have already seen
13:00he's putting in the hard punches,
13:02and he'll get rid of this guy
13:03as soon as possible.
13:04Santana said what he's going to try
13:05and do is bring the heat himself
13:06a little bit early.
13:07Not much of a boxer,
13:08you can tell.
13:08He wants to come bring the fight.
13:10He said his best weapon
13:10is going to be the right hand.
13:12I tell you what,
13:13I hate to see a fighter fight
13:14that tells me this is the last fight
13:16if he doesn't win.
13:17It always sounds like
13:17they got their bags packed
13:19and their tickets ready to go.
13:21Norris said he has seen Santana fight,
13:23says he comes out as a puncher
13:25but doesn't have a lot of boxing skills,
13:27doesn't stick and move.
13:28He's flat-footed.
13:29He just stands in front of you.
13:31He's slow,
13:32and he has no hand speed whatsoever.
13:37Those are the words of
13:38Terry Norris.
13:39He's loading up too much right now
13:41as Santana's intent
13:42on doing some kind of damage
13:43even if it's to the shoulders,
13:45arms of Terry Norris.
13:47Santana in the green,
13:48his last fight November 12th,
13:50so congratulations to Luis
13:52for his one-year anniversary fight.
13:54I'll tell you what,
13:55his conditioning and his chin
13:56is going to be tested tonight.
13:58This fight kept getting pushed back
14:00with many delays
14:01according to Santana.
14:05Interestingly enough,
14:06like Michael Jordan,
14:08Terry has told us
14:09he has plans of eventually
14:10retiring from boxing
14:11and trying pro baseball.
14:14Remember, he started fighting
14:15because of a racial fight
14:17during a high school baseball game
14:18in Lubbock, Texas.
14:20Past the midway point
14:22of round one.
14:24I'll tell you,
14:25with the great minimum salary
14:26of the baseball players get,
14:27it might not be all that bad an idea.
14:29Well, at least as a boxer,
14:30he's working.
14:32This is true.
14:32Well, if Michael Jordan
14:35can take a stab at it,
14:37why not Terry Norris?
14:38But I guess the main question
14:40as to the immediate future
14:41for Terry Norris,
14:43does he want to unify the title
14:44against Purnell Whitaker,
14:47which would be very attractive
14:48or the winner of Jones County.
14:50I think his whole family
14:51is committed to boxing.
14:52All that conversation is nice.
14:53But this guy is right
14:54on top of the game.
14:55He's right on top of the heat.
14:56He's going to be around him
14:57for a few years
14:57and let somebody max him out.
14:59He's going to be here
15:00for a long time, Terry Norris.
15:01I think he might be
15:02a little too big for Whitaker,
15:03but with Tony and Roy Jones Jr.,
15:06he might be a little too small.
15:07This guy's a full 168 pounds,
15:09but he may need to do a sneak up
15:10in the middleweight division.
15:11And I saw Julian Jackson
15:12lurking in the shadows.
15:13I know he still wants
15:14another crack at Terry.
15:16The Hawk is here tonight
15:17watching Julian Jackson.
15:20Orland Norris with a swift count,
15:21or Orland Norris won earlier tonight.
15:24The older brother of Terry
15:25will show you highlights of that.
15:27Terry with a nice combination.
15:28The second world title shot for Santana.
15:38Lost to Brown in 89.
15:40Believes this is his last shot.
15:41He's going to be in the middleweight division.
15:43He's going to be in the middleweight division.
15:44He's going to be in the middleweight division.
15:45He's going to be in the middleweight division.
15:46He's going to be in the middleweight division.
15:47He's going to be in the middleweight division.
15:48He's going to be in the middleweight division.
15:49He's going to be in the middleweight division.
15:50He's going to be in the middleweight division.
15:51He's going to be in the middleweight division.
15:52He's going to be in the middleweight division.
15:53He's going to be in the middleweight division.
15:54He's going to be in the middleweight division.
15:55He's going to be in the middleweight division.
15:56He's going to be in the middleweight division.
15:57He's going to be in the middleweight division.
15:58He's going to be in the middleweight division.
15:59You're not going to get a bump from one rim right here, okay?
16:07He's slow, he's slow, okay?
16:11Don't let him go in and log in, okay?
16:19Nothing new there.
16:21The main thing is don't let him log you into anything.
16:24Apparently, the corner has the same apprehensions
16:27and cares that Terry has, and then we have.
16:29Rudy Elias, the chief trainer for his dad, Orland Senior,
16:32is also in the corner. Traditionally, most fighters,
16:35well, just to name Sean O'Grady, Buster Douglas, Roy Jones Jr.,
16:38to name a few, have had problems with their dads in the corner,
16:41but this guy's an exception.
16:43When I turn pro, my father would refuse to be in my corner
16:45for the same reason. Too much emotion,
16:47can't be objective about certain things,
16:48and I think the father's place, for most places,
16:51shouldn't be in the ring, but Orland Norris Senior,
16:53great boxing mind, and a tremendous, I think, inspiration
16:56for both his sons, and he's the key to tie them all together.
16:59And he's done a great job with the big brother Orland as well,
17:02so he handles both brothers very nicely.
17:05I'm a fan of Orland Norris Senior.
17:07I agree. It's the only one I've ever seen
17:09that really does come up professionally to what it should be.
17:13Jerry Quarry's father was a terrible handicap for both of us.
17:16All right, round two scheduled for 12.
17:19And he's the only one I've ever seen.
17:21Joey Santana told us he's not coming in to swarm.
17:23He feels that the main thing here is Norris comes in overconfident
17:27that Norris has no idea what is in store for him.
17:30Well, we'll find out.
17:31Well, I'll tell you what, he said he trained to force the fight.
17:33He is trying to force the fight, especially on the inside.
17:35Terry's tying him up.
17:36Terry hit him with a couple of really clean punches right in the buttons
17:39and no real effects showing.
17:41So this may be tomorrow night for Terry.
17:45Santana told us he's not concerned with Norris's power.
17:48He wants to go toe-to-toe with the champion.
17:53He is worried about the possibility of Norris running,
17:55but that is not his history.
17:57He usually goes right through his opponents.
17:59I don't think he's got to worry about that.
18:01What? Oh, he's already got him.
18:03A little shaky problem there.
18:05That hook put Santana back on his heel and a little shaky.
18:09I'll tell you what, it was two hooks in the right hand in between.
18:11He threw a couple of nice punches there,
18:13but to Santana's dreaded, he shook it off very quickly.
18:17Norris returning to Mexico.
18:19You'll recall it was in Pueblo, one of his worst nightmares
18:22when he lost to Simon Brown.
18:23So he's looking to avenge his Mexican nightmare.
18:30I think the fan at home could see the difference
18:32between the quality of fighters and the punches.
18:34The punches of Norris are swift, and they do damage, and they land.
18:40And the punches of Santana are softer and more like a journeyman.
18:44They don't look like they hurt you if they hit you.
18:47And they're not sharp and crisp.
18:49Terry has all the tools, the punching power, the boxing skill,
18:53the speed, the defense, the legs.
18:55The only thing, the only dent in his armor is the fact
18:57that he doesn't have a great chin.
18:59And that's the only chance right now that Santana has
19:01because the other areas he's just outskilled.
19:04That's what Santana told us, looking to test the questionable chin.
19:07Troy Waters got the Norris down at San Diego,
19:10but Norris came back with abandon.
19:13And that's the kind of abandon you just saw a couple of seconds ago.
19:16Terry almost lost it as far as his control.
19:18He went in toe-to-toe with this guy, and he'll do that.
19:21When he thinks he's got him, he will put on the gas,
19:24and he gets very careful.
19:25And Santana, really, he's got to be more careful.
19:28He just opened himself wide up for a big right hand by Terry Norris.
19:36Another area where Terry's had some trouble.
19:37He has so much pride that when he gets staggered or hit with a good shot
19:40or knocked down, he immediately charges his opponent
19:43because he's such a prideful man.
19:44And he has learned to put that and keep that under control.
19:46And there you saw the quickness of the combination of Terry Norris.
19:49That's the voice of G. Elvis Phillips, who's a movie actor on the side,
20:12and he's speaking very good Spanish, and he's telling him that,
20:14hey, this is your night.
20:16You're getting too careless, and you're letting this guy come on.
20:18And he's exhorting him to punch hard.
20:28Let's take a look at how Terry goes right under,
20:32and then just picks him up and throws him.
20:33That, by the way, could cost him a point.
20:35That's not a thing you've got to do.
20:37Look at Phil.
20:40He looks like he should be in New York PD.
20:43Now that Caruso's gone, he can step in.
20:47But he's doing good work in a corner.
20:49Don't tell Jimmy Smiths.
20:51Yeah, he's appeared in the Body Snatchers and the Bad Lieutenant.
20:54In fact, Santana played the role of Robert De Niro's fighter in Night in the City,
20:57some popular movies.
20:58Well, it might be night in Mexico City here pretty soon, earlier than he won.
21:04Night has fallen over Mexico City here.
21:07It's very comfortable.
21:08I'd say temperature in the high 60s.
21:14Enjoy the action here.
21:15Good right hand by Terry Lawrence.
21:17So, I'll tell you for absorbing some of those clean combinations.
21:19His face, Santana, is not that much.
21:21It's not too bad.
21:22It's not swelling up.
21:23There's no blood or at least any marks that I can see from him.
21:26On the other hand, we're only in the third round.
21:28At the beginning of the third round.
21:29So, he's got a long way to go for marks.
21:32Oh, he'll have some of that, I'm sure.
21:34Oh, yeah.
21:35And some nuts on top of that.
21:37Terry.
21:38Terry being patient here.
21:39Not as usual, impatient walk through himself.
21:42He's fighting the fight he wants.
21:44Measured.
21:46Quiet.
21:47Effective.
21:48Being very calm, taking his time against a man who's lost seven of his last 10.
21:5238, 15, and 2.
21:5429 knockouts.
21:56And he hasn't fought since November 12th of last year in New York.
22:05When he lost the fifth round TKO to a fighter named Ron Gibbons.
22:08So, it's been exactly a year since his last fight.
22:10Here's that nice extension jab by Lawrence.
22:17That's the halfway point of round three.
22:19Santana's throwing that right-handed.
22:21Far too over-over looping.
22:23He's just not going to connect.
22:24Terry's going to see that come under because, as he even said,
22:27not great speed on Santana's car.
22:30Like all old fighters, he has not much reflexes.
22:34And when he throws that, he's so far from hitting it,
22:36it's almost ridiculous.
22:37And he'll get caught in one of those in mid-arc and get blocked.
22:45Terrible Terry Norris in the red trunks.
22:47Luis Santana in the green.
22:49The referee, Mitch Halper.
22:52A couple landed there.
22:54Came inside for a change instead of looping it.
22:55It was effective.
23:04Santana looking to get Norris into a brawl.
23:06But Terry Norris wants the box.
23:08Wants to be the master technician.
23:10Uh-oh, uh-oh, uh-oh.
23:11Look out.
23:12He rocked him.
23:13He's rocked him.
23:14Terry Norris is staggered a little bit.
23:16It's their right hand to the temple again.
23:18Another one.
23:19He's in a little bit of trouble here.
23:20Here's that chin we were talking about.
23:22Less than 30 seconds to go in round three.
23:24And Luis Santana, they're calling it a knockdown.
23:29How can they call out a knockdown?
23:30How can they call out a knockdown?
23:31How can they call out a knockdown?
23:33Hold it, hold it, hold it.
23:34That's not a knockdown.
23:35They were both engaged there.
23:37He fell on top of Norris and pulled him down.
23:41And now he got tagged.
23:42Yes, he did.
23:43Now Santana is stunned momentarily.
23:46I'll tell you what.
23:47What Terry's got to not do here,
23:49he's got to stay focused and relaxed.
23:51This is how he gets in trouble.
23:52Fighting back when he's hurt.
23:53And Bobby, just what you said,
23:55he didn't get nuts.
23:56He didn't go nuts.
23:57He went back to fight easy.
23:59He did do what you said.
24:00He tried.
24:01Don't do that.
24:02Come on.
24:03Let's listen.
24:04Don't do that.
24:05You've got to keep moving your upper body.
24:06You've got to keep throwing the jabs, man.
24:08How you feel?
24:09I mean, you're still good.
24:10Don't let him knock down.
24:11Don't let him catch it like I'm no more.
24:14All right, I'm good.
24:15Come on, champ.
24:20Come on, champ.
24:21Come on, champ.
24:22Come on, champ, man.
24:23Come on, champ, man.
24:24All right, here's the manager's worst nightmare.
24:26The manager with that kind of chin.
24:27Look at his legs.
24:28Boop, boop, boop.
24:29He's doing that kind of thing now.
24:30Watch the knockdown.
24:31Now, see, this is what Bobby was talking about.
24:32Instead of attacking, he went back to try to regroup himself.
24:35That's the new Terry Norris.
24:36But he got him right on the chin.
24:37Now, right here, he refuses to let go,
24:39and the referee tries to break him.
24:41A little later on in the round,
24:43he tries to break him.
24:44Terry refuses right here to let go.
24:47That's not a knockdown.
24:48It wasn't a knockdown,
24:49but the referee was at a bad angle
24:50and saw the punch
24:51and then saw Terry go to his knees.
24:52And Norris comes scorching out of his corner.
24:56Now, wait a minute.
24:57I want to get some of that stuff off of the face of Santana.
25:00G. Elvis Phillips there.
25:01And now Norris really wants to get at Luis Santana,
25:05which could be a mistake.
25:06We'll see what happens.
25:08Well, here's where you can tell whether you got a fighter or not.
25:11And I think Terry Norris is the kind of fighter
25:13when he gets mad and he comes on,
25:14he'll finish this guy off.
25:15You can clearly hear Norris in his corner say,
25:18he pulled me down.
25:19He pulled me down.
25:20That was not a knockdown.
25:21But he wants to end this right now.
25:23Now, he's mad.
25:24Now, Santana told us that if he does get Norris in trouble,
25:29Santana will not swarm.
25:31He'll take his time.
25:32Let's see what happens here.
25:33He may not have the time, though.
25:35Right now, he's getting swarmed.
25:38He's getting hit.
25:39Hard shots.
25:40He's taking them, but they're accumulating.
25:42Norris, as if to say, enough is enough.
25:44I'll tell you what, a little deja vu right here in Mexico
25:47against Simon Brown in the first fight.
25:48He also went down in the third round,
25:49so not a lucky place for him, Mexico.
25:52Mexico has not been kind to Terry Norris.
25:54Meanwhile, Santana believes that God is in his corner,
25:57not only G. Elvis Phillips.
25:59Driving back from the Whitaker McGirt fight,
26:01he and his manager escaped a car accident
26:03that he says should have killed him.
26:06So he feels that this is his sign.
26:08Uh-oh, hold on, hold on.
26:09Now, look out.
26:12And Santana struggling in the corner.
26:14Look at this.
26:15Look at the cut.
26:16Cut on the forehead.
26:17Cut on the forehead.
26:18Goes over to see the doctor.
26:19Bleeding profusely on the forehead.
26:21It is really coming down his face.
26:23Yep.
26:24Now the fans are booing Terry Norris.
26:27They're giving him the thumbs down.
26:30He is not a popular man right now.
26:32Terry Norris.
26:33And they're taking a point away for the headbutt
26:37from Terry Norris.
26:38Let's go.
26:39So Luis Santana has become the crowd's favorite here,
26:41and he comes right back at Norris.
26:43Oh, what a fight we've got here all of a sudden.
26:45Well, Santana said this was his last fight.
26:47He's going to give it all,
26:48and he's going to leave it here or win.
26:50Big low blow.
26:51And Norris looking to end it right here.
26:54I'll tell you what.
26:55Santana was in trouble there.
26:56Just his will kept him from hitting the dick hammer.
26:59Santana with great heart.
27:01Wow.
27:02Look at his courage.
27:03Look at Santana.
27:04He's fighting back, but he's getting hammered.
27:07He has got some chin.
27:08What we've got to watch now is can he unload?
27:10He's taking all this punishment.
27:11Is he going to take too much starch out of him
27:13so he doesn't have the power to do it?
27:15Can Santana get out of this round?
27:17Still a minute 10.
27:18Blood streaking down from his forehead,
27:20from a headbutt.
27:21Norris losing a point here this round,
27:23but Norris going down in the last round.
27:29Against a journeyman, 35-year-old Luis Santana.
27:33And he was punching like a journeyman,
27:35and all of a sudden he summoned everything he had
27:37and landed right on the chin.
27:39And as we have seen in all the other fights,
27:41there's a spot in there that's weak on Terry Norris.
27:44He's on the side of the temple.
27:46And it's been with Julian Jackson,
27:47and it's been with Troy Waters.
27:48Every one of them is connected there.
27:50Coming up to 30 seconds left in round four.
27:56There's a cross on Santana's shoes that say,
27:59Year of the Lord on his crunch as well.
28:01Is there a miracle happening for Luis Santana?
28:05Oh, he is taking punishment.
28:07What a heart on Luis Santana.
28:09He's taking punishment.
28:10This is his last fight.
28:11He wants to do the best he can.
28:12I'll tell you what,
28:13he's got a good heart and a great chin
28:14because he has taken some shots.
28:17He's definitely not in the class of Terry Norris,
28:19and yet he's putting up a heck of a fight,
28:21and now he's ahead just about,
28:23or even because this is one point off.
28:25And perhaps Norris saying to himself,
28:27what do I have to do to put this guy down?
28:30Come on, work on the cut.
28:32Don't just throw it up.
28:33Well, he's a good actor, but he's not a good cut man.
28:35Somebody's better work on that cut.
28:36Well, let's see what caused that.
28:37Let's go back and let's take a closer look to see,
28:39because only one guy got cut here.
28:41And that's always fascinating.
28:42Now both of them hit.
28:43And one of them came out with a big one.
28:44And it's very stressful.
28:45You've got to see a lot of eye on the left.
28:46You've got to see a lot of eye out.
28:47To get cut.
28:48Come on.
28:49Do you want to see a lot of eye out?
28:50I can't get cut.
28:51Well, he's a good actor, but he's not a good cut man.
28:53Somebody's better work on that cut.
28:54Now, let's see.
28:55You've got to see what caused it.
28:56Now let's go back and let's take a closer look to see,
28:57because only one guy got cut here.
29:02Let's go back and let's take a closer look to see
29:04because only one guy got cut here.
29:07And that's always fascinating.
29:08Now, both of them hit, and one of them came out with a cut.
29:12You know, I'll tell you what, sometimes it's a real shame
29:13when a butt happens, and in this particular case,
29:16you know, they're just coming to head, they're coming to,
29:18oh, Terry just, yeah, Terry kind of bent and leaned into him.
29:21That's difficult, but he has the right to cover and duck.
29:24So that's exactly what Julio Cesar Chavez did.
29:27That's exactly the same thing.
29:28He patted his head, he went over to the referee,
29:31and the referee walked him overnight.
29:33He didn't call the doctor, I don't think, did he?
29:35Well, you're referring to Randall Chavez, too.
29:37If a fight is stopped due to an accidental butt
29:39after the completion of three full rounds,
29:41the winner is decided by the scorecard.
29:45That could have been, that could have been tasty
29:48because it's right even.
29:50I have a, I had a 28-28 at the end of three,
29:52and now I have it 37-37.
29:54I'm afraid I concur with you, Ferdi.
29:56We are agreeing on this one right now.
29:58Don't be afraid, we're right.
29:59Round five, scheduled for 12.
30:03It has turned out to be a lot more than Terry Norris.
30:06Fargan's right hand by Norris.
30:08Boy, it was holding him up.
30:10I just gotta say, Santana's still on his feet.
30:12The punishment, though, is becoming too much.
30:14I can see the debilitation that's in his eyes,
30:17it's in his body.
30:18It's almost over now.
30:20You can't take this from a top fighter,
30:22from a guy that can punch as heavy as Terry Norris.
30:24I mean, however brave you are, you can't take it forever.
30:27A gutty effort here by Luis Santana,
30:30who's getting drilled to the face by Terry Norris.
30:33He's getting desires to leave the building.
30:39The crowd turning on Norris after that headbutt
30:42in the fourth round.
30:43Norris got a point deducted.
30:45Norris stunned.
30:4735 seconds left in round three, then went down.
30:50It was ruled a knockdown, although it seemed like
30:52he was pulled down.
30:54Oh, look at these short, crisp uppercuts by Norris.
30:56He's a good technician.
30:57He's a terrific offensive technician.
30:59He can use his legs as a great defense when he has to,
31:02but I'll tell you what, Santana, to his credit,
31:04has got some chance.
31:06And to the people who love Terry Norris,
31:09watch him, they gotta always be apprehensive
31:11that he's going down.
31:13This guy, no matter who he fights,
31:14you got your heart in your throat when he fights.
31:16Well, Norris, of course, lost that air of invincibility
31:18when he was decked by Troy Waters.
31:21And Simon Brown, good left hand by Norris.
31:23And Santana looking to take advantage.
31:25Santana stunned him a little bit, but he's hurt.
31:28Santana goes down on his back.
31:30He hit him in the back of the head.
31:31He hit him in the back of the head,
31:32and I think we're going to have a problem
31:34with disqualification possible.
31:37He's called a doctor.
31:38Vince Halpern has summoned the physician into the ring.
31:41And this could be tricky.
31:42But he's calling timeout for the counting.
31:44Yeah, this could be tricky.
31:45And he's got Terry in a neutral corner.
31:47And this fight is not being stopped yet.
31:49It could be tricky if you hit him in the back of the head.
31:51This could be a disqualification.
31:53This could be very tricky.
31:55Halpern saying, Terry Norris, get into the neutral corner.
31:57He's simple for a timeout.
31:59I just saw some things start flying, too, boys.
32:01We better keep our eyes peeled.
32:04The doctor saying, get up.
32:06And he's saying nothing.
32:08Things are being thrown into the ring.
32:09And in our area now, projectiles are coming down.
32:13Seat cushions, let's hope that's all.
32:14Now, seat cushions landing in front of Terry Norris.
32:17Meanwhile, the doctor continues to check out Luis Santana,
32:20who is flat on his back just in front of us.
32:23Santana's either doing something very bright
32:26or he's truly hurt.
32:27I mean, if he can lay there and hope that this is a disqualification,
32:30that's very smart.
32:31He got hit with a bad left hook in the back of the head.
32:33It was a pretty good shot.
32:34He really was.
32:35And his back was turned.
32:36His back was turned.
32:37Terry teed off into him.
32:38And I think it was adrenaline.
32:39I'm sure he didn't mean it.
32:40But I'll tell you what, it's a very bad shot.
32:42Seat cushions, pads keep coming into the ring,
32:44being provided by the arena, Plaza de Torres.
32:47Let's hope we don't have a riot on our hands here.
32:50Well, Steve, we're not in a good position for a riot,
32:52except that we have the cover of under the ring.
32:54Controversy follows us.
32:56The doctor has shrunk.
32:57The doctor.
32:58If you don't want to continue, you lose by a knockout.
33:11If you're able to get up.
33:13If you don't want to continue, you lose by a knockout.
33:23You're saying that if you don't get up, if you don't get up,
33:26you've lost the fight.
33:27If you don't want to get up, if you don't let him continue.
33:31The doctor's speaking in Spanish right to him.
33:34His eyelids are blinking, but he's not talking.
33:37I don't think from a condition that he can get up.
33:39He's Russell here in Mexico.
33:41Suleiman is saying if he doesn't get up,
33:43he's lost the fight.
33:44The referee is saying it about the punch,
33:46and Suleiman is saying if he doesn't get up,
33:47he's lost the fight.
33:48Suleiman!
33:49Suleiman!
33:50Suleiman!
33:51Suleiman!
33:52Suleiman!
33:53Suleiman!
33:54Suleiman!
33:55Suleiman!
33:56Suleiman!
33:57Suleiman!
33:58Suleiman!
33:59You need to get up.
34:00You know, this is amazing.
34:01Here's a guy I've been laying there unconscious for about two minutes.
34:03Nobody's done anything to him medically.
34:04And the buggy really is out.
34:05What about the treatment?
34:06Yes, you know.
34:07Yes, you know.
34:08Yes, you know.
34:09Ferdy, understandably upset.
34:10Ferdy, understandably upset.
34:11The fans are trying to urge Santana to his feet.
34:13The doctor, instead of trying to examine him and find out neurologically,
34:16is there anything wrong with him?
34:17They haven't looked in his eyes.
34:18They haven't done anything.
34:19He's trying to talk him into getting up.
34:20What kind of doctor is that?
34:22He has been down, Ferdy, over two and a half minutes.
34:26Yeah, that's all the more reason to give this guy emergency care.
34:29This guy could be hurt and nobody's looking at him.
34:32Forget the fight.
34:33That's a piece of meat here all of a sudden.
34:35I'll tell you what, his eyes are blinking and flashing.
34:53He may be in trouble for real.
34:54This is outrageous, Ferdy.
34:56This goes beyond the decision of the fight.
35:01I'll tell you what, someone said if he's out, he's out.
35:04But I'll tell you what, to be knocked out by a bunch behind that head,
35:06if you're knocked unconscious, it's a terrible, terrible shame.
35:10No contest is better than you used to knock down.
35:14He walked.
35:15Terry Norris waiting patiently in the neutral corner.
35:18He's almost having to dodge some of these stick positions
35:20flying past his head.
35:21Now, the doctor's looked in his eyes and he thinks he's faking.
35:24He's looked in his eyes and he thinks he's faking.
35:26He's looked in his eyes and he thinks he's faking.
35:29The fellow was trying to talk to a fighter.
35:31They could get up.
35:32That was hardly a neurological examination.
35:34He looked in his blinking eyelids and he's just blinking, but he won't.
35:42G. Elvis Phillips is telling us that Santana is legitimately hurt.
35:46This is one of the weirdest things that I have ever seen in boxing.
35:58It is outrageous that they are just letting him lay flat on his back
36:01without giving him medical attention, as Fernie alluded to.
36:07Obviously, more important than the fight.
36:13And understandably, off to my right, Fernie is beside himself.
36:19Now, finally, Mitch Halford is waving it off.
36:22And now, they've got to get Santana some help.
36:28He wants Santana has not moved.
36:40You know, I wonder if he got up and tried, just got up and stood up.
36:43Would he win by disqualification?
36:44Or would they say to him, you have to continue with the probable concussion that he has?
36:50If this guy is in any kind of medical distress to wait two and a half minutes unconscionable
36:55while they try to decide whether the guy won or lost a fight.
36:58He's been down nearly five minutes.
37:00Nobody's helping him.
37:01Get him out.
37:02Where's the medical technicians?
37:03Where's the oxygen?
37:04Where's the guys that'll get him to the hospital?
37:06Where are these people?
37:07This guy's laying here.
37:08All right, this is how it happened.
37:17This is what led to this fiasco.
37:21Well, here you can see him.
37:23He's backing up to the ropes.
37:24I thought Terry got caught with a little bit of a good right hand.
37:27And now his back is toward it to him.
37:28And he hit him.
37:29It actually doesn't look like it was that bad.
37:31But he hit him right in the back of the neck, base of the skull.
37:34Think Santana was going to lose anyway, but certainly not this way.
37:37You see the timeout indication by Mitch Halpern.
37:40And now this is over five minutes ago.
37:43And Santana has not moved.
37:45Here's another look at it.
37:46I mean, it's clearly a foul, but I don't think Terry meant to do it.
37:50I think he meant to reach around him, but he hit him right in the base of the skull.
37:53Here you'll see him.
37:54He ducks the right hand, spins behind him, and hits him right back on right in the back of the head.
38:00I don't know.
38:01It didn't look like it could do this much damage, but you never can tell, especially to the skull.
38:05This is an old fighter.
38:06He got hit in the back of the head.
38:07All he needs is one more shot like that.
38:09Now, in the meantime, the doctor, instead of giving him any resuscitative means, is cutting the gloves off.
38:15Now, that's not his function.
38:16Well, we're looking at it one last time, Ferdy, in every different angle.
38:19It doesn't look like a great left hook, but it's certainly square in the back of the head.
38:23And no one knows.
38:24He's an old fighter, and you don't know how much damage he had coming into this place.
38:27So you don't know these old guys can just explode there.
38:30And what we're seeing is no treatment.
38:36What an ugly scene here in Mexico City.
38:38This could turn out to be a total travesty.
38:42Well, I'll tell you what.
38:43I want to know, who does he sue?
38:44The country of Mexico?
38:45Because he's, right now, I'll tell you what.
38:48This is ridiculous.
38:50There is going to be talk about this.
38:52Boxing is going to be on the headlines and bashing again, I'm sure.
38:55I understand they're trying to get some emergency personnel through the crowd into the ring to assist Luis Santana, who's no more than two feet in front of us.
39:03They're finally getting a stretcher here.
39:05After hollering at Suleiman and King to get the stretchers, the paramedics here, and they don't look like much.
39:11The only thing they brought here, there's been no examination.
39:14There's been no emergency care.
39:16There's been nothing for the benefit of the fighter.
39:18This guy could be sitting here in grave trouble, and nobody has done anything for him.
39:24Now they're finally going to carry him out on a litter.
39:26Ferdy, how could they be this ill-prepared?
39:29That's what I'm saying.
39:30That's the danger of boxing in these countries.
39:32Why?
39:33Here is a WBC country who prides itself on all his boxing safety measures.
39:37No appropriate medication.
39:39No appropriate neurological change.
39:41No oxygen.
39:42Nothing here.
39:43This might as well be in Scranton, Pennsylvania.
39:46This might be carrying machismo a little too far.
39:48Well, it's ill-prepared, and the horrible part is that this doctor was interested in talking him into his life.
39:53He was interested in talking him into getting out tonight and to find out if he's hurt or not.
39:58No examination.
39:59This is outrageous.
40:01Very concerned, Terry Norris, who inflicted the illegal punch to the back of the head of Luis Santana.
40:08This is really a joke.
40:11One more look at what happened.
40:13Well, no matter how many times they show this, they can't show you what's inside this guy's brain.
40:18What's inside the skull.
40:19It might be a ticking time bomb there, and just one punch like that's all it takes.
40:22He's an old fighter.
40:23He's had a long career of beatings.
40:25Anything can happen to him.
40:26I'll say he chopped down on the back of his head and neck area.
40:29And like you said, Ferdy, no one knows what's going on in his physical structure.
40:34He lay on the canvas six or seven minutes.
40:39Well, thanks to the disgust of yours truly, Ferdy Pacheco and Bobby Chesney.
40:44Many bystanders here are frustrated and confused.
40:48Terry Norris.
40:50Norris, the subject of the ridicule of the fans here for inflicting that punch.
40:58Let's go over to Jimmy Lennon Jr. right now for some kind of announcement.
41:05Ladies and gentlemen, this bat has been stopped at two minutes, two seconds, round number five.
41:19The doctor says the fighter unable to continue.
41:27The referee declares him to go down due to a foul.
41:31The winner by way of disqualification, the winner by way of disqualification,
41:37the winner by way of disqualification.
41:39This is a new champion, Luis Cucuso Santana.
41:47They gave the title to Santana via disqualification foul.
41:55He won the title in a stretcher.
41:58Unbelievable.
41:59Meanwhile, look at the condition of Santana who has no idea that he wins by disqualification.
42:06he is totally out of it Luis Santana the winner by disqualification of the
42:13foul by Terry Norris that he doesn't want to talk right it took 8 minutes and 30
42:20seconds to get Santana out of the ring on a stretcher just a total travesty here
42:25in Mexico City early in his career I think he was disqualified once before
42:34hitting someone was on the ground I know he's had a terrible habit of unloading
42:37when a guy hits the deck sometimes it's just emotion and aggression and
42:41adrenaline but Lord have mercy that was as illegal as it could be Terry certainly
42:45the better fighter but not like that and you know I never said this but now
42:49all we can do is pray for Luis Santana that is a terrible shame a small no small
42:56black eye for boxing I'm sure all right we obviously need some clarification from
43:01the bosses let's go over to the fight doctor Ferdi Pacheco in the ring I was
43:04standing here with very concerned Jose Suleiman as the head of the WBC the
43:09WBC has always held for boxing safety yet on this night we have a doctor that
43:14came over stood over a fellow for five minutes a fallen fighter and never
43:18examined him and asked him repeatedly to get up and continue to fight now mr.
43:23Suleiman why in the world did you send over a doctor that could examine the
43:28fighter the doctor that examined the fighter is the chief doctor of the local
43:32boxing commission let me just answer what I know because the WBC is not the the
43:38local boxing commission the doctor told us that after seeing the fighter that
43:45his reaction of his nerves when he was examining that he thought that the father
43:49could continue he didn't want to continue while we were I asked him then again to
43:56please come and check him again because it was a strange that he that he
44:00we know each other now for 20 some odd years you know I'm a fight doctor you
44:04know I've seen hundreds and hundreds of knocked out fighters you know you've seen
44:09me examine fighters when they're down this man did not examine the fighter he did
44:13not look in his eyes until I screamed at him to at least look in his eye he'd been
44:18down there for five minutes to call help for paramedics no one did until you
44:22instructed him to come over when I hollered at you and Don King hollered to
44:26come over and help the fighter that man would have still been laying there and
44:29the only issue here was whether Terry Norris lost the title it doesn't make any
44:33difference when this guy is laying there in danger so I think that it was a
44:38terrific mistake on the part of the doctor and the boxing commissioner and I
44:42would like never to see that happen again especially right in front of me and
44:45the other issue Terry Norris lost his championship and that you have to answer
44:51to well what I think is this demonstrates the WBC regardless it's very unpopular
44:57for Terry Norris everybody seen that he was winning the fight but the rules and
45:00regulations the WBC adhere to this is not like what happened in Atlantic City when
45:05Riddick bold knocked out the guy he was fighting while he was on one knee and they
45:08come up with a no contest it takes a lot of intestinal fortitude to really render the
45:13fair and just decision and the fair and just decision was running tonight because regardless
45:18of how it looks Terry Norris fouled the man and he fouled the man intentionally so
45:22therefore the WBC rendered that Terry will lose his title and the man who lost that was
45:28carried out on the stretcher is now the champion of the world and that's the
45:31difference between Atlantic City and here in Mexico with the WBC and I think that you
45:36pray along with me that he recovers in time to find out that he is the champion because that
45:40issue has not been solved I hope he's well I hope he has nothing
45:43wrong with him and let us all pray that are sitting watching that that disasters
45:47that spectacle that we saw of nobody examines did not result in further injury to him and
45:52I hope he recovers I'm sure you do too I certainly do Charlie I've played at the
45:56guys all right safety to the boxes first and foremost we all pray for that many
46:00times I think the people get confused they thought the guy would be laying there
46:03I thought he may be playing possum but the doctor's job ain't to guess whether he's
46:07playing possum or not playing possum his job is to go and see give medical aid and
46:11that's why the failure came in and Luke that he didn't go get the medical aid first and
46:15forget about what decision would be second that's right that's it and so now back to
46:19Steve and Bobby at ringside all right all right thank you uh
46:22Ferdy now I don't argue with what they're saying that it was a good call as far as the
46:28disqualification is concerned but I don't like the fact that the guy is shifting the
46:32blame to the local Mexican authority somebody's got to take the blame for this this is a joke it's a
46:36it's a travesty you know they they saw after a minute or two that the guy was out of it enough
46:42is enough I think it's reasonably fair that this doctor take the blunt of this brain blame because
46:48he in essence has to take care of the health first that's the issue as we're watching a replay and
46:53you're gonna see when he gets hit on the back of the neck the doctor is the one that has to
46:56ensure safety first worry about the rules later worry about the fight later worry about the outcome
47:00later clearly it was a foul Terry you know turned around saw him hit him there I feel bad for Terry
47:05Norris I do admire Jose Suberman and WBC rules standing up they are right Riddick Bowe did hit
47:09Buster Mathis Jr. dead when he was down and they did nothing about it this time somebody acted it took
47:16eight and a half minutes before they finally got Santana out of the ring on a stretcher there are a lot of
47:21people walking around here that are stunned understandably so and I tell you what was really shocking to us it
47:28happened no more than two feet in front of us you still see the the wetness and the perspiration of
47:33Santana there on the canvas right right out in front of us because it was so close was Ferdi
47:38actually climbed in there and helped get him some help so I think in no small part due to Ferdi
47:42they got helping quicker it was still late in coming but this was educational I'll tell you Ferdi who
47:48obviously is a doctor and for so many years the personal physician of the great Muhammad Ali was beside
47:56himself he took the headsets off he climbed up into the ring and he was admonishing people and trying to
48:02give them advice on what to do he was telling G Elvis Phillips the manager uh forget about the fight
48:08yeah just I don't think I don't think I know Grant very well we've been friends a long time
48:14I think and I looked in his eyes and I saw him right above us as you say just a few feet I could hear him
48:18screaming are you okay are you okay and then he screamed at the WBC official that the hell would the fight get
48:23something but Ferdi was the one who basically was the catalyst to get somebody in there because he was
48:28screaming at everybody you know I don't want to appear over over dramatic or melodramatic but he may
48:33have saved his life you know we can't we can't know right now again 35 years old a hit behind the
48:39head that he didn't see he didn't prepare for when you at least when you get hit with a punch that you
48:43see coming your mind but kind of braces your body here he's hitting the back of the neck lower skull
48:48anything could have gone wrong could have been a bad day all right Bobby has said ugly incident right out in front of us
48:53uh we pray for Luis Santana as soon as we hear anything we'll pass it on to you
48:58regarding the condition of Santana let's go back upstairs to Jim Hill
49:02all right
