00:00McNeely will get his chance to prove that he truly has the power of a hurricane and is not merely hot air blowing in the Nevada desert.
00:07But before Tyson and McNeely take center stage, we have one more championship bout.
00:12Here comes the Express.
00:14Bruce Seldon, the Atlantic City Express, makes his first title defense of the WBA Heavyweight Championship.
00:21As a young man, this fighter had his troubles with the law.
00:23While in prison, he learned how to box, and with the help of his family and friends, he turned his life around.
00:30Bruce Seldon is living his dream, and he does not want to wake up.
00:34Coming up next, the WBA Heavyweight Championship.
00:37Bruce Seldon makes his first title defense against Joe Hipp, who is getting his first shot at a world championship.
00:43Once again, back down the ringside, here's Steve Albert. Steve.
00:45Thanks again, Jim.
00:46A brief genealogy of the WBA's one-third of the heavyweight crown, the last champion to hold all three belts.
00:52Evander Holyfield lost it to Riddick Bowe.
00:55He regained it, only to lose it again to Michael Moore, who then gave it up to George Foreman.
01:00Big George was stripped of the WBA title for refusing to fight the mandatory challenger, Tony Tucker.
01:05So Tucker fought Bruce Seldon for the vacant title this past April.
01:09If it were up to Tucker, he'd be fighting Bruce Seldon again tonight.
01:12Following his seventh-round TKO loss to Seldon, the 36-year-old former World Heavyweight champ screamed for a rematch,
01:18feeling that the fight was stopped prematurely.
01:21But Tucker, bleeding from his fractured nose and his left eyes shut tight, couldn't fool the ringside doctor.
01:26The vacant title went to Seldon, who could hide his emotions about as well as he could hide his sculptured physique.
01:32And tonight, Tony Tucker takes a backseat to a 32-year-old survivor named Joe Hipp.
01:37Seldon, a ninth-grade dropout who spent four years in prison as a teenager for armed robbery,
01:42has put the bad times behind him, while Hipp has had to overcome the ravages of injury.
01:46If it's not enough incentive alone to fight for a heavyweight title,
01:50there's also the possibility that the winner of this fight could meet Mike Tyson in the near future.
01:55As we bring back the fight doctor, who was able to extricate himself nicely from that little riot.
02:01Boy, what a start.
02:02Ferdy, your feelings on Seldon's performance against Tucker to win the vacant title?
02:06It was close to perfection.
02:08He came in with a game plan.
02:09He was going to jab.
02:09He was going to follow up with combinations.
02:11This he did.
02:12And then he was going to out-gut him and out-heart him and take him in the middle.
02:15Bad, he did.
02:16And he stops Tucker.
02:16I don't know how he could.
02:17He gets an A-plus from me for performance.
02:19He couldn't have done it any better.
02:21And Tucker hollering for a rematch is pure boxing falderall.
02:25I mean, he has no business in the ring with Bruce Seldon.
02:28Is Seldon better today than he has been in the past?
02:31And what do you expect from him tonight?
02:32I expect a championship performance.
02:34Is he better?
02:35Anybody's better when he gets the title.
02:37Once you gain the title, and especially in the heavyweights, you usually fight better.
02:40Is he going to fight better tonight?
02:41I think so.
02:42What kind of performance did we expect?
02:43A championship performance.
02:45He's well-orchestrated, well-planned.
02:46He's got hip in front of him to change things around with a couple of punches.
02:50But Bruce Seldon is a tough, tough man.
02:53And what about Joe Hipp?
02:55Does the Fragmented Heavyweight Championship give him a chance at a title?
02:58Bobby, what are your thoughts?
02:59The Fragmented Heavyweight Division, as well as every other division,
03:01gives all the fighters extra chances at a world championship
03:04because of the ranking bodies and organizations, the alphabet soup.
03:07Joe Hipp is the recipient tonight of this situation
03:09and is in a position to win a piece of the single most coveted prize in all professional sports,
03:15the heavyweight championship of the world, Steve.
03:16All right, Bob, let's take a look right now at the challenger southpaw.
03:20Joe Hipp, the number four rated contender in the eyes of the WBA.
03:24He's ranked number three by the WBC and the IBF.
03:26Born on the Blackfeet Indian Reservation near Browning, Montana.
03:29Hipp's mother journeyed from Yakima, Washington, to ensure Joe would be born on tribal land.
03:34Hipp grew up in Yakima where he was a football and wrestling star in high school.
03:37He recently moved back there, although he lists his hometown as Seattle.
03:41Joe Hipp, who has suffered through an injury-plagued career, including a broken jaw,
03:44bone chips in both elbows, a fractured cheekbone, three hand fractures,
03:48and a reconstruction of his right knee.
03:50But now with the injuries under control, he rides a six-fight win streak
03:54since losing to Tommy Morrison in 92.
03:56He's 30-3 with 19 knockouts.
04:00And now here is the champion, Bruce Seldon from Atlantic City, New Jersey,
04:04and in many eyes almost as improbable a heavyweight champion as Buster Douglas was.
04:09His first-round KO loss to Riddick Bowe in 91 nearly made him quit the game.
04:13And then came the deaths of both his mother and his manager trainer, Carmen Graziano,
04:18who was like a father to him, very trying times.
04:20Seldon, who entered the Tucker fight for the vacant title with a less-than-impressive dossier,
04:24saved his best for his first world title shot.
04:27The easygoing and good-natured Seldon has turned his life around,
04:30and tonight he hopes to successfully defend his heavyweight championship belt.
04:34For the record, he's 32-3 with 28 KOs.
04:37Let's check the numbers as we go to the tail of the tape at 32.
04:40Hip, four years older than Seldon.
04:42The height nearly even.
04:43Seldon weighed 230-40.
04:44He was 236 for Tucker.
04:46Hip, 233 down from 245.
04:48His last fight had almost a three-inch reach advantage for Seldon.
04:52And the rules for this championship fight is governed by the World Boxing Association.
04:55Ten-point must system.
04:56Three judges score the fight.
04:58No standing eight count.
04:59Three knockdown rule is in effect.
05:01Only the referee can stop the fight.
05:02A fighter cannot be saved by the bell except in the last round.
05:05And if there's an accidental foul before the end of the third round,
05:09the fight will be ruled a no decision.
05:10If it happens after the end of the third round, they go to the scorecards.
05:14Bruce Seldon, a 4.5-1 favorite here at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas,
05:18standing by for the WBA Heavyweight Championship.
05:21Seldon and Hip, let's get the introductions from our ring announcer, Jimmy Lennon Jr.

07:34He is currently ranked at WBA number four heavyweight in the world.
07:38Please welcome Joe,
07:40the Boss Hip.
07:42Hey, hey, hey, hey!
07:43Woo!
07:44And his opponent across the ring is the defending heavyweight champion of the world,
07:52fighting out of the red corner,
07:55wearing white trunks with red trim,
07:57fighting out of his hometown of Atlantic City, New Jersey.
08:01He weighed in at 234 pounds.
08:04His record, 32 wins,
08:07three losses with 28 wins,
08:10coming by way of knockout.
08:12Tonight he is making the first defense of his title.
08:14Here is the WBA heavyweight champion of the world,
08:17known as the Atlantic City Express,
08:20Bruce Seldon.
08:23And once again,
08:29here is our referee in charge.
08:30Now to give instructions,
08:32Richard Steele.
08:34Let's clear it out.
08:35Everybody sit in the chair.
08:36Let's clear it out, guys.
08:38Come on.
08:38Let's get out of the ring.
08:40Everybody, come on.
08:44Let's go, guys.
08:45Let's clear out the ring.
08:46Come on, guys.
08:46Come on, guys.
08:46Come on, guys.
08:53Okay, I spoke to both fighters in the press room.
08:56I'm cautioning again.
08:57Obey my commands at all times.
09:00In case it were knocked down,
09:01immediately turn around.
09:03Go to the neutral corner.
09:04Stay there until I tell you to come out.
09:07Shake hands.
09:08Good luck.
09:12All right, Joe.
09:13Let's go.
09:16The MGM Grand Garden
09:18just about filled to capacity now.
09:20Joe Hipp, tough southpaw, durable, strong,
09:24has basically fought through pain his entire career.
09:27He's got an awkward stance.
09:28As he describes it,
09:30it's completely backwards.
09:32Bruce Seldon, compact, rugged,
09:33more focused and mature the last few years,
09:35uses a very strong, fast, purposeful jab.
09:39And he was very successful with that
09:41in the win for the vacant title over Tony Tucker.
09:44Here we go.
09:44Round one scheduled for 12
09:46for the WBA Heavyweight Championship.
09:49The champion, Bruce Seldon,
09:50in the white with the red trim.
09:52The challenger, Joe Hipp,
09:53in the black trunks.
09:54Joe Hipp entered wearing a full eagle headdress
09:57bestowed upon him by the Blackfeet Tribe,
09:59honoring Joe as a chief.
10:00A very proud honor for the young man.
10:05Bruce Seldon told us
10:07he has the same game plan for Hipp
10:08that he had for Tucker,
10:10saying,
10:10my left jab will work overtime.
10:12But he added,
10:13if you think I had butterflies
10:14going into that Tucker fight,
10:15well, now they're like large birds.
10:17He's nervous.
10:19As you know, Bobby,
10:20there's a lot more pressure
10:21when you're defending a title
10:23as opposed to fighting for it.
10:25Well, see,
10:25when you're fighting for a title,
10:26you're a top challenger.
10:27Contending for it,
10:28if you lose,
10:28you're still a top challenger
10:29that can contend.
10:30If you're a champion and you lose,
10:31you become a top contender.
10:32It's a much bigger demotion.
10:34Therefore,
10:34you added pressure.
10:36Bobby,
10:37is it my tired old eyes
10:38or has that guy got flab all over him?
10:40Hipp.
10:41Joe Hipp has never been
10:42a very svelte heavyweight
10:43by any means,
10:44but he's down quite a bit
10:45from the last time.
10:46I think he's down 12 or 13 pounds.
10:48And usually you think
10:48the people that move
10:49would be tall, thin men.
10:51He's on his bicycle
10:52a little bit here,
10:53early trying to get out of the way
10:54of Bruce Seldon's jab.
10:55He is down to 233
10:57from 245 his last fight,
11:00but still showing the flab.
11:02The feeling is
11:03Seldon has the better movement,
11:04so Hipp needs to get inside
11:05and rough Seldon up.
11:07But Hipp,
11:08whose side-to-side movement
11:09is limited by injured knees,
11:11insists he will out-bought Seldon.
11:12He plans to take the fight
11:14into the later rounds,
11:15wear Bruce down,
11:16then knock him out.
11:17He says,
11:17people will be surprised
11:18at how well I can box.
11:20This was Hipp talking.
11:22He says,
11:22I know he's got a good jab,
11:23so I've got to get inside.
11:25But right now,
11:26the fight's just started,
11:27and the whole side
11:28of Hipp's face
11:29is all red
11:30and threatening,
11:31blotchy and threatening
11:32to break out into cuts.
11:34I mean,
11:34if he told us
11:35he was going to steal the jab,
11:36if he meant by that
11:37that he was going to let
11:38everyone land,
11:39then he's fighting
11:40a smart fight
11:40because Seldon is out-jabbing him
11:43and out-jabbing him
11:44with a hard jab.
11:45Seldon has an excellent jab.
11:47His trainer,
11:47Diego Rosario,
11:48and I used to box
11:48when I weighed 103 pounds.
11:50He was an excellent boxer
11:51who had a terrific jab.
11:52They have worked on that jab
11:53from the time Diego
11:53and he got together.
11:54When you were 103 pounds?
11:55I was 13 years old.
11:57I never saw your baby picture.
11:59Round one,
12:01scheduled for 12.
12:03Joe Hipp,
12:04he says,
12:05well,
12:05I'm easy to fight.
12:06I don't run.
12:08He is easy to fight.
12:10The jab is finding him
12:11every time Seldon decides
12:12to pop in
12:13and that's already swollen
12:15the eye up
12:16and the whole side
12:16of his face.
12:17Oh, look at it.
12:18I mean,
12:18it looks like he's been
12:18fighting for six rounds.
12:20Many people say
12:21today you just have
12:22to be a heavyweight
12:22and that this is
12:23an unlikely heavyweight
12:24championship.
12:25My manager and publicist
12:26Gary Stromberg said,
12:27Bobby,
12:27put the weight on.
12:27Just get in there.
12:28He said,
12:28even if you're losing
12:29a great fight,
12:29I can make your career
12:30after.
12:31Got to be a heavyweight
12:32and in the picture.
12:34Where the big money is,
12:35Seldon has never
12:38faced a southpaw.
12:39This is the first time.
12:45A monstrously boring
12:46first round.
12:47Let's listen to the corners
12:48and see if it gets
12:49any better in the corners.
12:50All right, Joe,
12:50look.
12:51You're doing good
12:52in there, okay?
12:53You've got to keep
12:53that left half a little bit,
12:54okay?
12:54When he comes to
12:55the double jab,
12:56he's going to try
12:56to throw that loop
12:57in right.
12:58Okay.
12:58So you've got to start
12:59getting ready to throw
13:00that straight left.
13:00Okay.
13:01Get that straight left
13:02ready to go.
13:03Loosen up a little bit more,
13:04okay?
13:04A little tight.
13:05Okay.
13:05Keep your hands up.
13:06If you're going inside,
13:07keep your hands up.
13:08If you're looking good,
13:09you're hitting him
13:10easy, nice and easy
13:11from the outside.
13:12Right.
13:12Don't change it
13:13because you're doing good.
13:15You don't want to give him
13:16no, you don't want to give
13:18him no energy,
13:19no confidence.
13:20You want to keep on
13:21that, keep the same rhythm,
13:23the same,
13:23that he's beating
13:24on his face.
13:25Benny,
13:25forget about the body,
13:26keep that jab
13:27on his face.
13:28Keep working on his face.
13:30He's going to open.
13:31The time is going to come,
13:32okay?
13:32Let's go, let's go.
13:34Let's go.
13:35Let's go.
13:35Let's go.
13:36Let's go.
13:36Let's go.
13:36Let's go outside.
13:36Just like that.
13:37Just like you're doing.
13:38Just like you're doing.
13:38Let's go.
13:39Well, we come off
13:40a very uneventful
13:41opening round
13:42for this championship fight.
13:43Very cool, composed.
13:46Diego Rosario,
13:47who was an excellent
13:47boxer in his day
13:48in the face of Bruce Seldon,
13:51the Atlantic City Express.
13:53The big question
13:54surrounding Seldon
13:55has been his chin
13:56ever since he was rocked
13:57by a Riddick full left hook
13:58in 91.
13:59His chin has been suspect.
14:01It was a punch,
14:01I think,
14:02that you said,
14:02Bobby.
14:03It didn't look like
14:04a very big left hook,
14:05but it hurt Seldon more
14:06than it probably should have.
14:07Well, sometimes
14:08when you get hit
14:08with a punch,
14:09it's turned improperly.
14:10It doesn't look big,
14:10doesn't sound big,
14:12doesn't have that big thud,
14:13but it does become
14:14very effective
14:15in his well-delivered shot
14:15in left row.
14:16Riddick Bowe's a big man
14:17and can punch.
14:17Also, Jose Rappolda
14:19had him down,
14:19so the chin
14:19has been a question
14:20for Seldon.
14:21Get ready, Joe.
14:22Get ready.
14:23Well, the jab
14:24that he's popping in there
14:25is what his game plan,
14:27and they had double
14:28end swells going on
14:29the face of Hip
14:30in the corner,
14:31indicating,
14:31boy, those guys
14:32are already worried
14:33that this stuff
14:34is going to start
14:34swelling up his eyes,
14:35and he's not going
14:36to be able to see
14:36if the jab continues
14:38and they're right.
14:39You heard Diego tell him,
14:39work from the outside work,
14:40he's just keep peppering
14:41his face.
14:42Do what you're doing.
14:42Don't give him a chance.
14:43Don't let him get any
14:44momentum going toward him.
14:46Hip, in one word,
14:47survivor.
14:47Very tough against
14:48Tommy Morrison at 92.
14:49He broke Morrison's jaw
14:51in the second round.
14:52Later in the fight,
14:53Morrison broke
14:53Hip's cheekboard.
14:55The fight lasted nine rounds
14:56with Morrison winning
14:57by TKO.
14:58Were they fighting
14:59with hammers or something?
15:00That's a lot of fractures,
15:01facial fractures
15:02for a fight.
15:02Seems that way.
15:04He generally has a
15:05meet-me-in-the-middle-of-the-ring
15:07philosophy,
15:08talking about Joe Hip.
15:09A little right uppercut
15:10there by Selden
15:11halfway through
15:12the second round.
15:14Well, that's a meet-me-and-jab-me
15:17in the middle-of-the-ring
15:17philosophy.
15:18Meet-me-and-show-me-how-hard-your-jab-is.
15:22Hip's got to get under the jab,
15:24and he's got to take some chances.
15:25He's got to maybe loop a left hook.
15:26He tried there.
15:27He tried to do it.
15:28Try and loop a left hand
15:29and throw a right hook
15:30to the body,
15:30a la left hook
15:31for a conventional play.
15:32Selden, who has pretty good foot speed,
15:36may be wise to continue
15:38to move on Hip
15:38using the angles,
15:40but meanwhile,
15:40it's Hip,
15:41the one who's moving around here,
15:42dancing around a little bit,
15:44trying to show people
15:45that he has movement.
15:46You know, Bobby,
15:47it was interesting
15:47when we were talking to him,
15:48he said,
15:49I'm going to try to take the jab.
15:50I am going to take the jab away,
15:52and you ask him,
15:52how are you going to do that?
15:53And you know,
15:53he didn't give you an answer.
15:55Well, actually,
15:55he did kind of give me an answer later.
15:56He said,
15:57by moving away.
15:58He can't hit anybody
15:59by moving away.
15:59No, Bobby,
15:59it wasn't an answer.
16:00It was words,
16:01but they weren't an answer.
16:03Rhetoric.
16:04Yeah, those were,
16:05yeah, I'm going to move away
16:05from it, right.
16:07You know,
16:07to look at Bruce Sellers,
16:08his appearance physique-wise,
16:09he looks like a perfect,
16:11I mean,
16:11a perfect specimen
16:12he ever fought as well
16:13as he looked,
16:14everybody would be in trouble.
16:15Yeah,
16:16he does have a beautiful...
16:17Well,
16:17sculpted physique,
16:19for sure.
16:20Wild this there
16:21with a left hook try
16:22by Joe Hipp.
16:23This kind of looks like
16:23Joe Lewis versus
16:24the two-ton Tony Galenta,
16:26who looked like a beer barrel
16:27when he fought him.
16:28And Joe looked great
16:29when he fought.
16:30Joe Lewis looked great.
16:31I'll tell you, though,
16:32Tony Galenta had Joe Lewis
16:33on the floor
16:33and ruined Lou Nova,
16:35top heavyweight way back then.
16:36Heavy and bad as he was,
16:37he could fight.
16:38Well,
16:39Bruce Sellers looking
16:39to avoid that scenario
16:41as the bell shot.
16:42Another one in the bag
16:43for Bruce.
16:46Give me the ice back.
16:52Good job, Joe.
16:53Pull that one.
16:55Beautiful, Joe.
16:56Beautiful.
16:57That's the way, baby.
16:57That's the way, baby.
16:58Joe, exactly the same way
16:59you did that round, okay?
17:01Use a jab, Joe.
17:02Get the jab going.
17:03Set all your punches up
17:04for the jab.
17:05When he starts coming
17:05towards you,
17:06use the jab.
17:07That'll offset
17:07that straight right hand, okay?
17:09Okay.
17:09When he double jabs you,
17:10he's always going to throw
17:11with that right hand.
17:12Let loose that straight left.
17:13Don't loop your punches.
17:14Throw straight punches.
17:15You're doing...
17:16Keep this foot
17:17on the outside.
17:19And then as you're
17:19keeping it on the outside,
17:20you'll be,
17:20Bob, Bob,
17:21you've got to keep
17:21the same rhythm
17:22but in close
17:23without jumping.
17:24Don't make the slip
17:25and step out.
17:26Then you've got to
17:26set yourself back up.
17:27I want you to stay right there
17:28and keep the same pace.
17:30You've got to keep that same...
17:32Stay beating on me
17:34with the jab.
17:34Let's go.
17:34With the jab.
17:35Let's go.
17:36One round at a time, please.
17:38Well, so far,
17:40Joe Hipp has not been able
17:41to get inside of Bruce Seldon
17:44and solve the jab
17:45and giving credit
17:47to Bruce Seldon.
17:48He is maintaining
17:49his pool,
17:50his composure,
17:50just as he did
17:51against Tony Tucker.
17:52He's boxing well.
17:54He's fighting a smart fight.
17:55He's not going headhunting.
17:57He's continuing
17:57to use that jab.
17:59Side to side.
18:00Give him some motion.
18:02They want more motion
18:03and side to side movement
18:04from Joe Hipp.
18:06Instructions from his corner.
18:07Hipp's not going to get it
18:08done from the outside
18:09with one wild swing shot
18:10left hook or overhand right
18:12or any other thing
18:12that he's going to throw.
18:13He's got to get inside
18:14and take his chance
18:15with some combinations,
18:16dig to the bite
18:16and make Bruce Seldon
18:18think and work inside.
18:19I'll tell you,
18:20the left-handed style
18:21is no factor at all
18:22for Bruce Seldon.
18:23He's just going right through it.
18:24He's just acting like this guy
18:26that may get him
18:26through his right hand
18:27or left hand.
18:27He's coming through
18:28with that jab
18:29and he's landing with it.
18:30And he's doing
18:30an amazingly good job
18:32at closing that eye.
18:33It is his first
18:33Southpaw opponent
18:34and he sparred it
18:37with ten people.
18:39Eight of the ten
18:39were Southpaw.
18:40This is a beautiful jab
18:41by Seldon.
18:41Great!
18:43Well, one of these minutes
18:45Bruce Seldon
18:46is going to decide
18:47to use the right
18:48with those double jabs
18:49and then follow it
18:50with a hook
18:50and we may see
18:51a visible effect
18:54on Joe Hipp.
18:54He doesn't look like
18:55he's able to receive
18:56that big a blow
18:57and stand it.
18:57Well, there you saw him
18:58make an attempt
18:59with that overhand left
19:00but no follow-up,
19:01no right hook,
19:01no body shots,
19:02just one at a time.
19:03That's not going to work.
19:04Not hard,
19:05not picture perfect punches,
19:07just kind of floating balloons
19:09is what he's throwing.
19:11The last four or five years,
19:13Seldon has become
19:13more of a complete fighter.
19:16He's much more focused,
19:17more mature.
19:18He's hungrier,
19:19he's eager,
19:19and he's looking
19:20to set up that overhand right
19:21with that left jab,
19:23something we saw
19:24against Tony Tucker's
19:24last fight.
19:25He outworked and outspeeded
19:28Tony Tucker.
19:29And it looks like
19:30he's not going to have
19:31any difficulty
19:32in that area
19:32against the
19:33challenger, Joe Hipp.
19:38Good counterpunch there,
19:39left hook by Bruce Seldon
19:41that landed to the jaw.
19:42Hipp.
19:45Certainly the comparisons
19:46are drastically different
19:47and not fair to the great one,
19:48but Muhammad Ali
19:49made an entire career
19:50with just one hand.
19:52So did Luis Manuel Rodriguez,
19:53he could just jab you there,
19:54so did Willie Pastrano.
19:55I mean,
19:55so did Willie Pep.
19:56I mean,
19:56there are guys that can
19:57make the left hand
19:58a whole career.
19:58and look great doing it.
20:02Oh, look at that little move.
20:04Whoa, is that a basketball move,
20:05buddy?
20:05I think that was more
20:06of a pirouette.
20:07That was a ballet move.
20:10Bruce Seldon showing us
20:11a little Baryshnikov.
20:13Yeah.
20:14Very nice.
20:15They should have thrilled
20:15our producer,
20:16Jay Larkin.
20:16He was in the ballet world
20:18for a while.
20:18He was married
20:18to a ballet dancer.
20:20And now the chase is on.
20:22Joe Hipp,
20:22Lanning with a little
20:23right hook,
20:24but not much damage.
20:26The chase was on,
20:27but the guy caught up
20:28and got killed.
20:28I mean,
20:29you know,
20:29the hunter got hammered.
20:32Final seconds,
20:34round three,
20:34and has been old
20:35Bruce Seldon,
20:36the champion,
20:37defending his WBA
20:38heavyweight title
20:39for the first time,
20:40winning it
20:40from Tony Tucker.
20:42So the arena continues
20:47to fill in here.
20:48S.R.O. crowd
20:50at the MGM Grand Garden
20:52in Las Vegas.
20:53They had to add seats
20:54to accommodate this event.
20:56A crowd of better than 16,000.
20:58They say close to 17,000
21:00will be on hand
21:00to witness a non-championship fight
21:03as Tyson Mania takes over.
21:05Later,
21:06Mike Tyson will take on
21:07Peter McNeely
21:08in Tyson's first fight back
21:09in over four years.
21:11Beautiful shot here
21:12at the MGM Grand Garden.
21:13It certainly is packing up.
21:16You can almost sense the buzz,
21:18almost sense the excitement.
21:20The celebrities,
21:21Pamela Sue Anderson
21:22and Tommy Lee on hand.
21:26I know Ferdy,
21:26a big fan of Baywatch.
21:28I'm a big fan of Tommy Lee's.
21:30Anybody can get a girl like that,
21:31I'm a fan of his.
21:32Forget the other.
21:34Yeah,
21:35there's going to be
21:36a celebrity back.
21:37Jim Carrey,
21:38Kelsey Grammar on hand.
21:39A celebrity stunning crown.
21:41That's two big talents
21:42by standing by each other.
21:45Well,
21:45those guys are great.
21:46Back to the fight.
21:46Round four,
21:47an uninspiring performance thus far,
21:49but Seldon is racking up
21:50the points.
21:52Again,
21:52with that shotgun jab.
21:54See,
21:54for the average fan,
21:55he looks at a fight like this
21:56and he sees a man
21:57built like Bruce Seldon
21:58and on the opposite side
21:59of the clean one
22:00that's built like Joe Hippie,
22:01expects a blowout,
22:02expects excitement,
22:03expect domination.
22:04And although he's winning
22:05very, very consistently,
22:06he's not dominating.
22:08Well,
22:09he's pitching a shutout.
22:10It's like,
22:10you know,
22:11saying you want to go
22:11to the best baseball game
22:13and see a lot of home runs,
22:14but you're seeing a no-hitter.
22:15I mean,
22:16it's not exciting,
22:17but it is something.
22:18It's a shutout here.
22:19It's like absolute
22:20zero excitement
22:23on the part of Joe Hippie.
22:25He doesn't even know
22:25how to get in
22:26and how to counteract the jab.
22:28Seldon is just too fast.
22:29Look at that,
22:30a spin move
22:31by Bruce Seldon.
22:33Oh,
22:33Steele.
22:34Steele for the first time
22:35says,
22:35that's a second
22:36spin,
22:36another one,
22:37and I'm going to
22:37dock you four-tenths
22:38of a point.
22:39Well,
22:39it's technically
22:40illegal to turn
22:40your back
22:41on your opponent.
22:42And that's me,
22:42they turn in
22:43a full circle twice.
22:44That's something
22:44you don't see very often.
22:45Like you said,
22:46it's a basketball move.
22:47Now,
22:48hip going to the body
22:49and Seldon
22:50entering back
22:50and then
22:51running away.
22:55That may have been
22:55the first solid punch
22:56of the fight
22:57there by Bruce Seldon.
22:58And the one that
22:59anyone that had
23:00any effectiveness to it,
23:01you know,
23:01like,
23:02I'm mad and I'm
23:02going to try to punch you.
23:04Bruce Landon,
23:04nice one-two,
23:05follow-up with another
23:06one-two,
23:07and then held on.
23:08He wasn't hurt.
23:09Hip wasn't even
23:09punching,
23:10but he held on.
23:11Midway round four,
23:12Hip told us that
23:13his game plan
23:14was to go to the body,
23:16get inside,
23:17get inside the
23:17jab of Bruce Seldon,
23:20makes Seldon's arms tired,
23:22but he has been
23:22ineffective.
23:24Seldon just too fast
23:25for him.
23:26Able to spin away.
23:28And the jab,
23:29you can't exaggerate
23:30enough what a jab
23:31does to you.
23:31It does to your timing,
23:32it does to your confidence.
23:33You can't get your stuff
23:34off and keep getting it,
23:35it starts hurting.
23:36I mean,
23:36a jab is a thing of beauty
23:37as a boxing weapon.
23:41There it is
23:41as we speak.
23:43He just flips it out.
23:44It's not only
23:45a probing jab,
23:46but it's an effective
23:47strong jab.
23:48He's got a nice,
23:49stiff, quick jab,
23:50very snappy.
23:50Not a full-time
23:51power jab.
23:52Oh,
23:53left hook
23:53and a countering left
23:54by HIP,
23:55and HIP's on to the body
23:56and digging in.
23:57HIP's staggered.
23:58Seldon just briefly there,
24:00Seldon holding on
24:00a little bit now.
24:01Got a nice left hand.
24:03This is the best
24:04HIP has left.
24:05Round four,
24:05Seldon shakes his head
24:06and says,
24:07you're not doing anything.
24:08But he did stun him.
24:09He did stun him.
24:10And he did hold on
24:12to the first big,
24:13good action from Joe HIP.
24:15Less than 30 seconds
24:17remaining in round four,
24:18and Joe HIP getting
24:19the wake-up call.
24:20Not enough to win the round,
24:21but he's certainly
24:22got the champion's attention.
24:25Come on, Joe.
24:28Come on, Joe.
24:29It'll be interesting
24:30to see what they tell
24:31the champion in the corner
24:32because he came close
24:33to getting hammered there.
24:36Good job, Joe.
24:37HIP just messing
24:38with that left hook
24:39as we head
24:40for the best.
24:45Come on, baby.
24:46Take the mouth,
24:47Mr. Diego.
24:48Close your eyes, baby.
24:51How you feel?
24:52Good.
24:53Well, Bruce,
24:55you feel good, right?
24:57Don't scare us like that.
24:59Come on, Bruce.
25:00You train too hard for this.
25:02You know why you got caught?
25:03Because you're sitting
25:04in the ropes.
25:05You're going like this.
25:06I don't want to see it.
25:07That's not how we train.
25:09Right?
25:09Yeah.
25:10How we train, Bruce?
25:11Moving.
25:11All right.
25:12Well, keep that single jab.
25:14Pop, pop, and moving.
25:15Keep that smart.
25:17Now, you're going to get
25:17a little tired.
25:18All right.
25:18Let's take a look
25:19from overhead.
25:21Let's take a look
25:22at HIP's brief moment
25:23of glory.
25:24That's a punch
25:24to the back of the head.
25:25That didn't do anything.
25:25But that one
25:26was the one
25:27that caught us at Tyson.
25:28That left hook there,
25:28however sloppy it was,
25:30did have some effect
25:31on him.
25:31Bobby.
25:32Yeah, if you watch
25:33it really slow,
25:34he's coming in.
25:34He's leaning in.
25:37Not really on balance
25:38and just gets hit there.
25:39Okay, the shot was clean.
25:40HIP was falling back.
25:42So was Seldon.
25:42Not as clean
25:43as it appeared
25:43when we did it.
25:45Fast beat.
25:45Round five.
25:47Well, in the last round,
25:48HIP making Seldon
25:49take notice,
25:50hitting him
25:50with some big shots,
25:51but HIP's left eye
25:53is beginning to swell.
25:56Now, a little pop quiz
25:57in the corner
25:58of Bruce Seldon.
25:59His trainer,
25:59Diego Rosario,
26:00says,
26:01Bruce,
26:01how do we train?
26:05And he goes,
26:05movement.
26:06Now he's just got
26:07to follow through.
26:09I wonder if they gave
26:10him anything for that.
26:11A lollipop or a point
26:12on the report card.
26:13That's the right answer.
26:18Oh, telegrams that one.
26:20That's the point
26:21where we talked about
26:21earlier.
26:22A couple of jabs
26:23and then the right hand.
26:24He just did it then.
26:25He's starting to open up.
26:26That wasn't even
26:27a good straight right
26:28or a good overhand right.
26:29That was kind of
26:29a slow, lagging
26:30right hookish.
26:32Yeah, like it occurred
26:34to him too late
26:34for it to land.
26:36There's the left
26:36and the right.
26:37Now movement by
26:39Hipp who's dancing
26:39around, backpedaling
26:41but not throwing
26:42any punches.
26:45And that jab
26:45is easily shielded
26:47by Seldon.
26:48Seldon getting through
26:49again with his left jab.
26:52You would think
26:52after the success,
26:53the little bit of success
26:54that Joe Hipp had
26:55putting Seldon on the rope,
26:56he might press him
26:57a little more,
26:57but he's not.
26:58Yeah, might try
27:00to get offensive-minded
27:01to push him,
27:02bully him,
27:02to try to tie him up
27:04and out-strengthen him,
27:05you know,
27:05to get some offense going.
27:08That's what I'm trying to say.
27:09Let's get some offense, Joe.
27:12Little right hook there
27:13by Seldon
27:14as he was coming away.
27:16Hipp's best punch
27:17is the straight left.
27:18He has lots of power
27:19in the left hand.
27:20Oh, low blow there
27:21by Bruce Seldon.
27:23Way south of the border.
27:24That was a
27:24Miguel Angel Gonzalez punch.
27:26And that was
27:27a legitimate warning
27:28by Richard Steele.
27:29A left uppercut there
27:30by Joe Hipp
27:31that snuck through.
27:33But see,
27:33he didn't follow up.
27:34He didn't test to see
27:34what kind of damage
27:35he may have done.
27:36He is not a good finisher,
27:38Joe Hipp.
27:39Not a bad starter.
27:40Eight of his 19 KOs
27:41in the first round,
27:4215 of the first three,
27:43but it has been
27:45mostly Bruce Silver.
27:46And you have to say
27:47he's a wonderful catcher.
27:48I don't think
27:48I've seen a guy
27:49catch as many jabs
27:50in a long, long time
27:51and still stay standing.
27:52Get the jab going, Joe.
27:54Come on, Joe.
27:55On your toes, Joe.
27:57On your toes, Joe.
27:58Weed, get the motion.
27:59Bobby, do you think
28:00that a corner can tell
28:01a guy how to block
28:02a jab when it's landing
28:03that much?
28:04He doesn't even
28:04try to block it.
28:05I mean, is there any way
28:06that you can tell a guy,
28:07hey, use your hand.
28:09Block it.
28:10I'm sure you can tell him,
28:11but if he hasn't worked
28:11on it in the gym,
28:12it's going to probably
28:13be difficult to just
28:14bring it to his attention
28:15like that.
28:15And almost similar
28:18to that Tucker fight,
28:19it looks like target
28:20practice now for Selden.
28:21He's aiming for that eye.
28:23Why not?
28:24I mean, he's closing it
28:25slowly, slowly.
28:27And the only way
28:28he can get tired
28:28is he can get tired
28:29at the running job
28:30because neither man
28:31are doing much fighting
28:32to get tired.
28:33Final seconds
28:34of round number five.
28:35Hold your way out.
28:38Left hook there
28:39by Selden
28:40that landed
28:41to the head of hip
28:41as the bell sounds.
28:43Right now,
28:44let's go over to Jim Gray.
28:46All right.
28:46Thank you, Steve.
28:47I'm with Tim Allen.
28:48Yeah, you can ring the bell.
28:48I want to ring the bell.
28:49Of home improvement.
28:50This is your first fight.
28:51What attracted you here?
28:52Well, I didn't want
28:53to say anything
28:54because it's big news.
28:56I'm actually here
28:56on a site survey
28:57for Walt Disney.
28:59We're buying Vegas.
29:01Oh, is that right?
29:01Yeah, we're looking
29:02at the whole state of Nevada
29:03eventually
29:03on the western side
29:04of the country,
29:04but Disney is buying Vegas.
29:06We've got ABC, Vegas,
29:07and they just purchased
29:08Guam for me.
29:09Curiosity was too great
29:10though to stay away
29:11from Tyson.
29:12Stop with the mic.
29:12Don't do this thing.
29:13Tyson.
29:14The chicken people there?
29:15Yeah, the chicken.
29:16There's a whole bunch
29:16of chicken here.
29:18Oh, Mike Tyson.
29:19Mike Tyson, yeah.
29:19The only fight
29:20I've ever been to
29:21was my brother.
29:22The last fight I was at,
29:23I was in it.
29:23It was with my brother
29:24after school.
29:25So I came here
29:26because Showtime
29:28took my pet dog
29:29and I don't get it back
29:30unless I...
29:31No, I just came to see
29:32what this is all about
29:32and this is...
29:33It's a little frightening.
29:35I mean, I saw...
29:36I saw the...
29:36Worse than you
29:37and your brother.
29:37I saw Yeltsin here.
29:39I mean,
29:39who isn't at this thing?
29:40Let's go back up
29:41to the ring.
29:41Thanks for joining us, Tim.
29:43Steve?
29:43All right, Jim.
29:44Thanks very much.
29:45As we enter round six,
29:46both fighters rested
29:47for most of that last round,
29:49but they really have been
29:50all that active
29:50in the first place.
29:52Seldon has been effective
29:54with the left jab.
29:56And the depressing fact is
29:58that it is a shutout
29:59and that Hip does not seem
30:01to understand
30:01that he must block the jab
30:02and he must have
30:03some offensive action.
30:06We're just waiting
30:07for that crunching
30:08overhand right
30:08to get through
30:09by Bruce Seldon
30:10and so is Bruce.
30:11Even when Bruce
30:11throws that jab-jab right,
30:13even if Hip blocks it,
30:14he doesn't fire back.
30:15He's got to fire back.
30:17But this awkward
30:18southpaw style
30:19of Joe Hip
30:19is having no
30:20positive effects
30:22for him
30:23against Bruce Seldon.
30:24Seldon
30:25just walking
30:27right through Hip here.
30:28It would seem to me
30:29that if Seldon belabors
30:33that flabby body
30:33he's got there,
30:34he's got a gold
30:35in that territory
30:35because this guy
30:36doesn't look like
30:37he's got a muscle
30:37through all that flabby.
30:40Well, it's heating up
30:41a little bit now,
30:41fighting toe-to-toe
30:42inside, head-to-head.
30:44Most of the damage
30:45still being done
30:46by the same man,
30:47champion Bruce Seldon.
30:48Come on, work and get on it.
30:49Bruce Seldon, 32-3,
30:5128 knockouts.
30:52He's 28 out of Atlantic City,
30:54New Jersey.
30:55His first defense
30:56of the title.
30:58Bruce, you see him now,
30:59he's kind of leaning
30:59southpawed.
31:00Now, you see him
31:01take that left hand
31:01and turn it over
31:02like a southpaw?
31:03He switches on the inside
31:04a lot, turns and switches
31:05his angles and swings
31:07his weight across his body.
31:09Why would Seldon want
31:11to get that close
31:12to let this guy punch him?
31:13Why would he do that?
31:14And when he's just
31:15bouncing jab after jab,
31:17winning easily,
31:18why would he get inside
31:19to get punished?
31:19Is he bored?
31:20Well, Steve,
31:21I could offer up
31:21a few different opinions.
31:23One, he could be
31:23getting a little tired,
31:24although I don't think
31:25that's the case.
31:25It's early.
31:26He hasn't done a lot.
31:26Two, he may think
31:28that this is the easiest
31:28way to not get caught,
31:29one of those looping shots.
31:30Or three, he is bored.
31:31Come on, Joe, let him go!
31:32I think three is a much
31:33better choice than one and two.
31:34Let's go, Joe, let him go!
31:36Is this multiple joins?
31:37Yeah.
31:38I could always pass those days.
31:40Look at that.
31:41Hip going to the head.
31:43Keep going!
31:43Keep going!
31:44And he just stopped.
31:45Keep going!
31:46And his corner
31:47is urging him
31:47to keep going.
31:49Tony Perea
31:49in the corner there,
31:50a former
31:50There you go, Joe!
31:51All-American football player.
31:53Punching it out!
31:55Oh, oh!
31:55Third time!
31:57Second time.
31:58Let's go!
31:58Uh-oh!
31:59A warning to Bruce Sheldon
32:00from Richard Steele's second time.
32:02Keep him up.
32:02And finally a way
32:03that Hip can get a point.
32:04We're just halfway
32:05through the fight
32:06and calling me confused,
32:07but Hip looks like
32:09he's really, really tired.
32:10Worker, get out!
32:11And he's supposed
32:12to be in the best condition
32:13of his life.
32:14That's what he told us.
32:15He's bent, pressing a lot more,
32:17over 300 pounds,
32:17as opposed to 135
32:19or not long ago.
32:21But you wouldn't know it.
32:23Less than, oh!
32:24A left hook by Sheldon
32:25with less than 20 seconds.
32:26Hip covered back.
32:28Sheldon,
32:28is Sheldon hurt
32:29or he's just faking?
32:31I thought he was
32:31playing myself.
32:32I think he is.
32:32Yeah, he's playing.
32:34That's exactly what he's doing.
32:35When he's hurt,
32:36he's hurt,
32:36he's a lot worse than that.
32:39It certainly got the crowd going.
32:40They've got hip-hack
32:41shot from the gamble there.
32:43When it was playing by Sheldon.
32:47Look at me, Bruce.
32:48Close eyes.
32:51Listen, Bruce.
32:51There we go, Bruce.
32:52You got him now.
32:53You got him almost quitting.
32:55You see how you hurt him?
32:56Give me the towel.
32:57Bruce, you got the man quit.
32:58You gave me him confidence.
33:00That's it.
33:00Listen to me.
33:01All right, baby.
33:02Bruce, you want this title now, baby.
33:03It's your title.
33:04If you want to keep this title,
33:06Bruce, you've got to fight for it.
33:08If you want this title,
33:09you've got to fight for it.
33:10Listen to me, Bruce.
33:11Listen to me.
33:12You want to keep this title,
33:13you've got to fight for it.
33:15You're enjoying the fight, okay?
33:17So you keep on fighting.
33:18Don't give the guy confidence.
33:20Move.
33:20All right, let's take a replay.
33:21Let's see who was faking and who was.
33:23I don't believe that Zeldon was hurt at all.
33:26And hip was hurt a little bit.
33:28But as far as Zeldon's concerned,
33:29look, that was like a nothing point, you can't.
33:31Playing, playing, playing, and trapping him.
33:34Let's see what happens.
33:35I know.
33:35You look at it again.
33:36Bruce Zeldon lands a nice right there.
33:37He follows with a left hook.
33:39Hip comes back with a straight left.
33:40Fairly clean.
33:41I think he got Bruce Zeldon's attention a little bit,
33:43but then Bruce played, let him come in and try and load up.
33:46Yeah, I don't think that was anywhere
33:48where you can qualify that as hurt.
33:50Round seven.
33:51We'll see if Zeldon comes out with more fury here.
33:54In the seventh round.
33:56Going to the body with that right uppercut is Zeldon.
33:58Well, he's got plenty of points to spare.
34:02I mean, if he wants to get a point taken away from him,
34:04it's okay.
34:05He's way ahead, 60 to 54.
34:07But don't you think, Bobby,
34:09he should be able to put this guy away?
34:10Talking about Bruce Zeldon.
34:11Well, you know, as you're looking at it,
34:13as it stacks up physically by appearances,
34:15on paper, with what he has in the way of tools,
34:18you say yes, but then, you know,
34:19the intangibles come in.
34:20A man's heart and courage,
34:22the chin of Bruce Hipp,
34:24the desire to stay in there,
34:25excuse me, Joe Hipp,
34:26the desire to stay in there,
34:28you know, take your chance.
34:29Well, he's got a lot of pride.
34:30He's a survivor.
34:31He has fought through a lot of pain.
34:34We can't take that away from Joe Hipp.
34:36His 15 sisters flew in from Browning, Montana,
34:40presented with a good luck,
34:41traditional Native American headdress.
34:43His Native American name is,
34:44he comes free,
34:45which means fast chase,
34:47given to him by his grandfather,
34:48a proud member of the Blackfeet Reservation
34:50in Browning, Montana.
34:52But Bruce Zeldon,
34:53he's got a check that.
34:55I think the Indian meaning is,
34:56eat a jab.
34:58That's what I think his meaning is,
34:59because that's all he has done.
35:01I'm not even going to touch that, Fergie.
35:05Well, you can let him go.
35:06And if there's any confusion out there,
35:09he is the one who told us
35:10he is from the Blackfeet,
35:11as opposed to the Blackfoot Reservation.
35:16Midway past round seven,
35:18scheduled for 12,
35:19the WBA Heavyweight Championship.
35:21It has been a rather uninspiring fight
35:24as we stand by for the big one,
35:26the main event,
35:27Mike Tyson and Peter McNeil.
35:29You saw Bruce Zeldon,
35:31he threw a jab,
35:32threw another jab,
35:32threw a right hand,
35:33stuck,
35:34but doesn't really unload,
35:35but a lot of combinations.
35:36One, one, two,
35:37maybe one, two, three,
35:38but not really pressuring the situation,
35:40not really trying to close this out.
35:42Bobby, we're talking about
35:43a heavyweight champion
35:44who is not taking command.
35:45He's not understood
35:46he's a heavyweight champion.
35:47You take command of guys like this
35:48and get him out.
35:49Left strong,
35:50left jab,
35:51out of my right uppercut
35:51by Zeldon,
35:53getting the attention
35:54of Bruce,
35:55of Joe Hipp,
35:56and Joe Hipp
35:57is bleeding.
36:01Heavy right,
36:02overhand right
36:03by Bruce Zeldon,
36:04and that sort of
36:05wiped off the blood.
36:07Yeah, I didn't see
36:08too much blood on this guy
36:08except on the nose
36:09a little bit.
36:10No, I can't help
36:11but believe
36:11if Zeldon puts together
36:13four or five punch combinations,
36:14two or three in a row,
36:15back to back
36:15with the right pressure,
36:16that this fight
36:17is much closer to the end.
36:18That's what I'm saying.
36:20As we approach
36:2020 seconds,
36:21round six.
36:22And he has to do that
36:23in order to impress you.
36:24This is the guy
36:24that's supposed to fight
36:25with Tyson.
36:26If Tyson,
36:26everything goes well
36:27with Tyson
36:27in the next several months.
36:29Can you imagine
36:29what Tyson would do
36:30with this guy?
36:31Yes, indeed.
36:32The winner of this fight
36:33may meet Mike Tyson
36:34down the road in March.
36:36Tyson is looking ahead
36:37to perhaps Buster Mathis Jr.
36:39after McNeil in November.
36:45Come on, baby.
36:45Come on, baby.
36:46He comes out fast,
37:01but he's turning at the end,
37:02so you've got to turn it on.
37:04At the end,
37:04you've got to turn it on.
37:05Let the punches go.
37:06Throw straight punches.
37:07Let that left hand go.
37:08Put some water on his hand.
37:09Put some water on his hand.
37:11Just a matter of minutes now.
37:14Mike Tyson will finally
37:15step in the ring
37:16for the first time
37:16in over four and a half years,
37:18and that is behind closed doors.
37:20It is the dressing room
37:21of Mike Tyson,
37:23the former heavyweight champion
37:24who wants his privacy,
37:26and he will soon be
37:27getting back into the ring
37:29after three years of prison
37:31and four years of inactivity
37:32against Peter McKinnon.
37:34Have fun.
37:41Well, in the last round,
37:43Bruce Seldon opened a small cut
37:44in Hips' nose.
37:47You saw the results of it.
37:48He was referring to it
37:49between rounds
37:50and landed some big,
37:52straight rights.
37:54We're now to round number eight.
37:56Bruce Seldon winning every round,
37:58but unable to put the challenger away.
38:02Well, the way they roll up those
38:03rolls and put them up the nose
38:06with adrenaline
38:06is usually when you break your nose.
38:08So it's not a cut.
38:08It's a probable broken nose,
38:10and it would figure
38:11with all the jabs he's taken,
38:13it wouldn't be hard
38:13to break the nose
38:14with the strength
38:15of a power-driving jab
38:17that a heavyweight like this throws.
38:18So that's a good possibility,
38:20and Hips is certainly used to injury.
38:22Oh, yeah.
38:23He's had it all.
38:25An injury,
38:26play, grip,
38:27chronic knee problems,
38:28bone shifts removed
38:29from both elbows,
38:30an eye orbital fracture,
38:31fracture to rib,
38:33a series of hand injuries.
38:34It just goes on and on and on.
38:35A little broken nose
38:36is going to hurt him.
38:37No, that seems insignificant.
38:40And certainly this Southpaw style
38:42has not hurt Bruce Seldon.
38:45Usually a Southpaw
38:46can be somewhat confusing,
38:47particularly if he jabs
38:48and controls the fight,
38:49but that has not been the case
38:50against the champion Seldon.
38:52Both men have settled
38:53into a little too much of
38:55I don't really care
38:55if I don't hit him
38:56as long as he doesn't hit me
38:57right now.
38:58What I was feeling
38:59was a certain lack
39:00of aggressiveness.
39:02Listen, I can do this
39:03to the 12th round,
39:04and let's go home.
39:06Tell you what, though,
39:07that straight left jab
39:08by Seldon followed
39:09by a right frost
39:10straight to the nose
39:12has to hurt.
39:13Yeah, he's wearing out.
39:14I mean, you know,
39:15hip is wearing out.
39:17Well, if you look at his face
39:18now, it's getting dark and ugly.
39:20There's a cut underneath
39:21his left eye.
39:21It's bleeding profusely now.
39:24The cut under hip's left eye
39:26is bleeding profusely.
39:27And that's what the repeated jabs
39:29will do,
39:29macerate the tissue
39:30and just cause it to pop open.
39:32It won't be long
39:32for a doctor will be in here,
39:33and it may not be long
39:34before it stops them.
39:36Unless hip starts
39:37to do a lot more fighting,
39:39there's no reason
39:39to let him just get butchered.
39:41Hip's face,
39:42an ugly mess right now.
39:44Seldon goes for the target.
39:48Well, Bruce is staying
39:49on the outside,
39:50constantly pushing that jab
39:52in the Joe hip's face,
39:53a la what Diego Rosario
39:54was telling him
39:55in the corner,
39:56not forcing the issue
39:57any more than he has to.
39:58And hip has just never
40:00been able to follow
40:01his game plan
40:01and get on the inside
40:02of that Seldon jab
40:03all night.
40:09That left eye
40:11is ugly.
40:12Joe hip.
40:16Major welt,
40:17terrible cut,
40:18his nose may be broken.
40:20It sounds like
40:20the Tucker fight now.
40:21Yeah, beginning to sound
40:24like a report
40:25in the emergency room.
40:28Come on, Joe.
40:30Let it go.
40:32Don't hold him.
40:33Punch away out.
40:34Final second,
40:35round eight.
40:40Come on, Joe.
40:41Let it go.
40:42Right.
40:45Come on, Joe.
40:46Come on.
40:46Come on, baby.
40:53No water.
40:53No water.
40:54Okay.
40:57It's all right.
40:57We'll get it.
40:58Come on, baby.
40:59Come on, Joe.
41:00You've got to keep
41:00those hands up.
41:01It's not a boxing match
41:02anymore, okay?
41:03This is a fight.
41:03Now, go get this guy.
41:05You've got to go get him
41:06and you've got to throw
41:06punches.
41:07Let those hands go, okay?
41:09Let it go, baby.
41:11Let it go, okay?
41:12You've got to give him
41:12some head movement.
41:13Don't stand in front of him.
41:15You've got to get him
41:16up and down
41:16You've got to get him
41:17this round.
41:18Now, let's take a look
41:20at what's doing the damage.
41:21Of course, the jab,
41:22then the hook after the jab,
41:24and then a right hand
41:25after the hook,
41:26and that is the classic
41:27combination in boxing.
41:29And, of course,
41:30this is repetitive.
41:31One round after the other,
41:32Joe Hipp's face
41:34is falling apart.
41:35Bobby.
41:36You can't eat that many jabs,
41:37Ferdy.
41:37You just keep eating them.
41:38You're going to bust up.
41:39Take some off.
41:40You've got too much on.
41:42Come on, you guys.
41:43Come on, come on.
41:44Go get him, Joey.
41:45After a James game
41:45in the corner of Joe Hipp,
41:47looking on very closely,
41:49and they let it proceed.
41:50Round nine.
41:53Terrible, well-hinned cut
41:54under the left eye
41:55of Joe Hipp.
41:56As mentioned before,
41:57his nose may be broken.
42:00I didn't see the doctor
42:01come in.
42:02I didn't see him examine him.
42:03We were looking at him
42:03pretty close.
42:04What's happening?
42:05Now he's going to take him
42:06over to the doctor.
42:07Now let's sit down.
42:08You've got too much on.
42:09Come on.
42:09Oh, they've got too much
42:10to the Vaseline
42:11underneath the left eye.
42:12So they've got to take
42:13some of that off.
42:14That's Richard's.
42:14Oh, that is a deep, ugly gash
42:17when that stuff was removed.
42:18Did you see that?
42:19Yeah, I don't know
42:19if that was right
42:20to remove that.
42:21I don't know.
42:22I'll tell you what,
42:23you could have put
42:23your whole finger in there.
42:24Right.
42:25Well, the doctor
42:25should have been in there
42:26and examined a lot closer
42:27than from the outside
42:28of the ropes.
42:29I mean...
42:30That's why I forget.
42:30The cut is under the eye.
42:31There's no danger
42:32of the blood trickling
42:33into his eye,
42:33so he don't mind
42:35a little ugliness
42:35and a couple of scars.
42:36Well, there's a lot
42:37of ugliness.
42:38This guy's got a history
42:39of all kind of facial fractures.
42:40You've got a lot
42:40to worry about
42:41and you've got a lot
42:42to examine.
42:43You can't do that
42:43from outside the ropes, Bobby.
42:45You've got to get inside.
42:46You've got to put
42:46your hands on the fighter.
42:48High cheekbones there,
42:49HIP,
42:50and his eyes
42:50are beginning to close.
42:53You know,
42:54at this point in time,
42:54he's well beyond
42:55the point of no return.
42:56For some fighters,
42:57it's just a matter of,
42:58okay, can I finish the fight,
42:59stay on my feet
43:00for 12 rounds of the champion,
43:01but if I'm Joe HIP,
43:03I'm throwing caution to win.
43:04I'm taking my shot here.
43:04He's got a lot of heart
43:06as the blood gushes
43:08out of that gas
43:09once again.
43:14HIP just keeps
43:15coming forward
43:15despite all of his problems.
43:17Well, bravery
43:18has never been
43:18one of his problems.
43:19We don't decry
43:20his heart
43:21and his courage.
43:22It's just that simply
43:23it's a matter of
43:24one man's talent
43:25is not as big
43:26as the other.
43:28Go hold him.
43:29I'm trying to get out.
43:32There you go, Joe.
43:33There you go, Joe.
43:35Let it go, Joe.
43:36Step to your right.
43:39Step to him.
43:40Step to him.
43:41Step to him.
43:43He can barely see.
43:44Joe HIP can barely see.
43:46He's got slits for eyes.
43:47He's got a big swelling
43:48under that it's cut.
43:49He's got a possible
43:50broken nose.
43:51He is a mess.
43:53There's nothing
43:53in his future
43:54but more jabs.
43:55And I'll tell you
43:57right now
43:58they're not going
43:58to accuse Bruce Seldon
43:59of having too much
44:00of the killer instinct
44:00because he's staying back
44:02keeping his game plan
44:03boxing ready
44:03and willing to accept
44:05his 12-round decision.
44:06Doesn't seem to be
44:07any urgency on his part.
44:09He's not pressing.
44:11He's jabbing beautifully
44:12but not really swarming
44:13and you get the feeling
44:15if he wanted to
44:16he could just end
44:16this fight at any moment.
44:17Well, Steve,
44:18when you figure
44:19he's got a contract
44:20with Tyson
44:20in his back pocket
44:21I don't think
44:22he needs to take
44:23too many chances.
44:23Do you think
44:23he's actually thinking
44:24about that?
44:25No, no, no, no.
44:25What he's thinking
44:26about is be safe
44:27go to the end.
44:28Why go into a war
44:29with this guy?
44:30You got him beat.
44:31He doesn't have
44:32a killer instinct.
44:33Bobby's pointed
44:33that out very well
44:34and that's exactly
44:35what we're looking at.
44:36A guy that doesn't kill.
44:37He told us
44:38in the meeting yesterday
44:39Seldon that
44:40Tyson is lurking
44:42in the back of his mind
44:43but he just wants
44:45to get out of here
44:46safe and sound
44:47right now.
44:48Yeah, you're talking
44:48about a huge amount
44:49of money
44:49and a great chance
44:51that ring immortality
44:52if you beat Tyson
44:53and here you've got
44:54a guy you're beating
44:55to death.
44:55Why take a chance?
44:57Now the doctor
44:58should come in
44:58and look at it
44:59up close.
45:00Let's see.
45:04Come on, get the bitch.
45:06Sit down, Joe.
45:08Come on, baby.
45:09Don't blow your nose.
45:10You better step
45:11and punch for me now,
45:12okay?
45:12You get him going
45:13then you let him get away.
45:14Hold still.
45:15Stay on top of him.
45:16All right?
45:17Let's put a tap
45:17and you ain't got
45:18a couple of rounds
45:18and you'll let it all hang out.
45:20Don't stop, Joe.
45:20Keep going.
45:22Keep going, okay?
45:23Keep throwing that
45:23straight leg.
45:24Step to your right.
45:25Step outside
45:26of his left foot
45:27to your right
45:27and let the leg go
45:28as hard as you can
45:29let it go, man.
45:30Come on, baby.
45:31Three and four to time.
45:31This is round 10.
45:33He is the legs, Joe.
45:34So far, I see no doctor
45:35inside the room.
45:36He's got to him.
45:37Round 10, Joe.
45:39Round 10, Joe.
45:41It's below the eye.
45:41Catch no trouble
45:42below the eye.
45:43Don't put too much on.
45:44No, he won't.
45:45How's that?
45:45That's good.
45:4610th round, Joe.
45:46Come on.
45:47You hear me, Joe?
45:48Step and punch it.
45:49He is in the legs.
45:50You can get this break.
45:51Stay on top of him.
45:52Come on, Joe.
45:52Let's go.
45:53Come on, Joe.
45:54Come on, man.
45:55Let's go, baby.
45:56Come on, Joe.
45:58James Game was wearing
45:59a very bright blue-green jacket.
46:02Was sort of standing
46:03on the outside,
46:04but he never really
46:04got that close.
46:05I mean, I don't understand this.
46:06This guy was like
46:07three feet away from him.
46:08I mean, he's on the outside.
46:09They're giving him
46:10ring instructions.
46:11The most important thing here
46:12is medical inspection.
46:13They haven't looked at him.
46:15I can't understand.
46:16That's two rounds
46:17that they really
46:17should have looked at him.
46:18He should have gotten in close.
46:20At least this time
46:21he's inside the ropes.
46:22Last time he was
46:22outside the ropes.
46:24Round number 10.
46:25More damage being inflicted
46:26on Joe Hipp's left cheekbone
46:28in the last round
46:29by Bruce Seldon.
46:30With the left jab there
46:31by Seldon.
46:33Except for the degrees
46:34of swelling and blood,
46:34you could just run a repeat
46:36of the last round
46:36in the round before that.
46:37Seldon moving,
46:38using the jab.
46:40Kind of uneventful rounds,
46:41but very effective.
46:42I don't know
46:45how Hipp can see
46:46through those slits right now.
46:47Well, he's got damage
46:49and both eyelids are swollen,
46:51so they're closing.
46:51Now, under it,
46:52they both got,
46:53not only have a swelling,
46:54but a cut,
46:55which makes it even worse.
46:56So both eyes are closing
46:58in the classical manner.
46:59The only way this doctor
47:00apparently is going to get here
47:01is if Richard Steele
47:02stops the fight
47:03and has the boxer
47:04come over for the doctor
47:05to examine and decide
47:06whether he should continue
47:07or not,
47:08which is very legitimate
47:09and which Richard Steele
47:10has been known to do
47:11many times.
47:12Steele has not taken
47:12his eyes off
47:13of the eyes of Joe Hipp.
47:16He can just barely
47:17see out of his left eye.
47:19I'm convinced
47:19that if Bruce Seldon
47:20presses this,
47:21throws four or five combinations,
47:22multi-punch combinations,
47:24referee steps in,
47:25stops his fight,
47:26because let's face it,
47:27he's well past
47:27the point of no return
47:28in the shutout.
47:29When the Vaseline
47:30on Hipp's cheek wears off,
47:33as we mentioned before,
47:34you can really see
47:34how deep the cut is,
47:36and you get the feeling
47:37if the doctor gets
47:38a close look at it
47:39between rounds 10 and 11,
47:40he's going to stop it.
47:41Oh, I think it's going to.
47:41Look, there he is.
47:42There it is.
47:43Richard's right.
47:44Richard's right.
47:45Steele's right.
47:46This guy can't even
47:47find a corner.
47:47Well, you saw him
47:47wincing his eye.
47:48I think he was letting
47:49the referee know
47:49he was done.
47:50Good move on Richard Steele's
47:52part.
47:52Excellent.
47:52He stops the fight.
47:53Excellent move
47:54by Richard Steele.
47:55And if they could have
47:56been stopped that one round
47:57before,
47:58the doctor should have
47:59been a little bit
47:59more aggressive.
48:00Going in there,
48:00taking a real good look at it.
48:01That's his job.
48:02That's his obligation.
48:03And Richard Steele
48:04very wisely stepped in
48:06and prevented further
48:07damage.
48:08As far as I'm concerned,
48:09it was a shutout
48:10and a thoroughly boring fight.
48:13Yes, sir.
48:14You hear the crowd reacting
48:15in an uninspiring fashion.
48:17Bruce Seldon defends
48:18his title against this man,
48:20a bloody mess.
48:22Joe Hidd.
48:23Seldon raising his record
48:24to 33-3.
48:26The fight is stopped.
48:28And so he picks up
48:29his 29th knockout.
48:31Bruce Seldon successful
48:32in his first defense
48:33of the WBA heavyweight title.
48:35Good fight.
48:37Embracing the loser Joe Hidd.
48:39His first world title
48:40shot drops to 34.
48:43Hidd getting his first
48:44real big fight experience
48:45on the undercard here
48:46of Mike Tyson's return.
48:48Heavyweight tournament.
48:50Look at that guy
48:51under the left eye of Hidd.
48:54Look at the eye.
48:55He's got a little trip
48:56to make the emergency room
48:57tonight.
48:57They've got to sew that up.
48:58It's unfortunate,
48:59but he had,
49:00he just had no defense
49:02and a jab too sharp
49:04and too fast by,
49:06I tell you what,
49:07I don't think that
49:08Bruce Seldon,
49:09who I really like
49:09as a fighter,
49:10covered himself with glory.
49:11He did what he had to do
49:12to win.
49:13Well, it was not
49:13a crowd-pleasing effort
49:14by Bruce Seldon,
49:15and if he's going to
49:18fight Mike Tyson
49:18down the road,
49:20he's going to have
49:20to retool
49:21and go back to the gym
49:22and work on some new things.
49:24Well, he couldn't get by
49:25with a lackluster performance
49:27like that with Tyson.
49:28Tyson would go right
49:29through him.
49:30If that's all he's going to do,
49:31then he better get some
49:32energy going
49:34as far as finishing
49:35and as far as aggression
49:37and as far as wanting
49:38to lay it out
49:39with a fighter.
49:39He showed none of those,
49:40and certainly without that,
49:42Tyson will eat him up.
49:44may have to bring
49:44a couple of hammers
49:45into the ring with him,
49:46and that fight
49:47could be brewing
49:48in the near future.
49:49Sheldon versus Tyson.
49:50We're set for the official time.
49:52Let's go over
49:53to our ring announcer,
49:54Jimmy Lennon-Jewitt.
49:58Ladies and gentlemen,
50:00we have the time
50:01of one minute,
50:0247 seconds.
50:03In round number 10,
50:05our referee in charge,
50:06Richard Steele,
50:07stops the contest
50:08and the winner by way
50:10of technical knockout
50:11ends still.
50:13WBA heavyweight
50:14champion of the world,
50:16the Atlantic City Express,
50:18Bruce Seldon.
50:23It boggles my mind.
50:24I don't understand this.
50:25All three judges
50:26had hip winning three rounds.
50:28Isn't that amazing?
50:29I want to go to
50:30one of their teaching clinics.
50:32I want to know
50:32what three rounds.
50:33Somebody's got to show me
50:34three rounds that he won.
50:35I got to go back
50:36to kindergarten
50:37and learn how to count.
50:39In any event,
50:40Bruce Seldon
50:40has the championship
50:41held in his first defense.
50:44Remains the WBA
50:45heavyweight title holder.
50:46Up next,
50:46it may not be
50:47a championship fight,
50:48but the eyes of the world
50:49are on our main event
50:50and Mike Tyson
50:51is the reason why.
50:53Coming up,
50:53what you've all been waiting
50:54for,
50:55the return of Mike Tyson.
50:58Mike Tyson
50:59against Peter McNeely
51:00in a 10-round heavyweight bout.
51:06And the MGM Grand
51:08is packed
51:08and waiting
51:09in eager anticipation
51:10for the main event.
51:16So we're set once again
51:18for our new addition
51:19to the broadcast.
51:20Bobby Chez has more
51:21on the Seldon hip fight
51:22with the help
51:23of the illustrator.
51:24Bobby?
51:24Okay,
51:27you watch here.
51:27Bruce Seldon again
51:28using his left hand.
51:29This left hand is the key.
51:31The jab is coming
51:32right down the middle,
51:33right down the middle.
51:34The hands,
51:35Joe hip,
51:35are low.
51:36When he leans
51:36and he bends over,
51:37his hands get even lower.
51:38Seldon jabs him,
51:39then hooks
51:40right on the butt
51:41and right on his eyes.
51:42You watch
51:42the left hand work.
51:43It's been a picture of beauty.
51:46There's the jab.
51:47There's the hook.
51:47They're landing clean.
51:48Again,
51:49the hands of Joe hip are down.
51:50Now the right hand
51:51to go to the other eye.
51:52He did whatever he wanted.
51:53Everything landed.
51:54Hip did not have
51:55any good defense
51:56and very little offense.
52:00So that's the story.
52:01The WBA Heavyweight Championship
52:03stays with Bruce Seldon.
52:05Let's go back upstairs
52:06to Jim Hill
52:07and Sugar Ray Leonard.
52:08Jim.
52:10All right, Steve.
52:10Thank you very much.
52:11Ray,
52:11before the heavyweight
52:12bout,
52:12when I looked at it,
52:13you said,
52:14yeah,
52:14I like to watch
52:14the big fellas go at it,
52:15but you're a little
52:16disappointed in what you saw.
52:17Well,
52:18I am, Jim.
52:18I mean,
52:18I like to see
52:19the big guys go at it,
52:20but then again,
52:20I like to see
52:21a very evenly competitive fight.
52:23This fight
52:24was rather boring.
52:25I think with the champion,
52:27Bruce Seldon,
52:28he has to show aggression
52:29to show people
52:31that he wants to fight.
52:33He laid back
52:34and he did what he had
52:34to do to win,
52:35but I still think
52:36these guys don't give enough
52:37of themselves
52:38to be effective.
52:40A couple of months ago,
52:41you wrote an article
52:42about the heavyweight division.
52:43You criticized
52:44some fighters
52:45in the heavyweight division
52:46and you praised others
52:47about, you know,
52:48unifying the heavyweight division.
52:50Where would this
52:51particular fight fall into?
52:52What category
52:52would that fall into?
52:54It's not in the same category,
52:55Jim.
52:55I mean,
52:55these guys,
52:56I mean,
52:56they did,
52:57again,
52:57Bruce Seldon
52:58did what he had to do,
52:59but it wasn't impressive.
53:01And Joe Hipp,
53:02he just was not
53:03in the same league
53:04as a Bruce Seldon.
53:05I think the heavyweight division
53:06is really in for
53:07a trash situation.
53:10I hate to say that.
53:10But Mike Tyson
53:11hopefully will give
53:12these guys some inspiration
53:13to get in shape.
53:15Well, Ray,
