00:00Well, the first ever game for Kyle Shanahan as the Niner head coach, they lost 23-3.
00:05There it is.
00:06So, since the opener, they lost to Carolina at home, 23-3.
00:11They went on to lose their first nine, but since then, they had never scored three or fewer points until now.
00:18Yeah, I mean...
00:19Maybe it's a bookend of Shanahan's career.
00:21Yep, it's over.
00:22I mean, probably.
00:24It's not even fun.
00:25Stefanski, Dable, Carroll, Shanahan.
00:29Man, coach of the year on the way into the game.
00:31Sure.
00:32Fired on the way out.
00:33Hello?
00:35You play to win the game.
00:37Let's hear it.
00:38Let's hear it.
00:38Let's get through these frustrations.
00:40Michael and Concord, we thank you for calling.
00:42What's up, Michael?
00:44Hey, guys.
00:45So, yeah, I'm just going to try to get through my two frustrations about Saturday's game.
00:51So, this is like where Kyle Shanahan drives fans like me crazy.
00:54Like, you get a sack with a minute left.
00:56I think there was a minute left, like right before the halftime.
00:59And then you just let the play clock roll.
01:02And that was a big sack.
01:03That could have been like a momentum swing or anything like that.
01:05And you just fold your arms and wait for halftime, you know, nonchalantly.
01:09You know, that's not smart football.
01:10That just shows me that the coach is scared and he doesn't know what the heck's going on.
01:15And then, obviously, the big third and 17 that you give up on a flipping toss play.
01:22A toss play, you know.
01:24That's just like backyard football right there.
01:26They were just handing the ball off.
01:27They were like, hey, let's try to get a little bit of field goal range or whatever.
01:30And then, I mean, there was some holding on that play, too.
01:35But you could obviously call holding on every single play.
01:37But everyone's jerseys were getting turned.
01:40Everyone was getting hooked.
01:41There's no pursuit.
01:42There's no, like, form tackling.
01:45It's just awful.
01:46But, at the end of the day, I still have confidence because I'm a faithful.
01:51And I think, you know, we just need the Eagles offense to play.
01:58We just need the Eagles offense to not play as good as our defense.
02:04Yeah, yeah.
02:05Michael, thank you very much.
02:06Can you, I know you've always got the play.
02:08Yep.
02:09So, remind me exactly what's going on right before halftime because that, at the time,
02:14did not stand out to me.
02:16So, the Niners kick a field goal to cut it to 10-3 with a 1-0-6 to go.
02:20Right.
02:20They kick off and Shahid runs it out to the 35.
02:22So, there's probably 55 seconds left.
02:25And Sam O comes out and he sacks Darnold.
02:28Right.
02:28And the Niners do nothing.
02:30And if you call timeout there, it's going to be 2nd and 16 at their own 29.
02:34And I believe the Niners had all three tight ends, or timeouts.
02:39I'm trying to look at my notes, and I don't see any of the timeout that was taken.
02:42So, at that point, you'd be aggressive.
02:45And, you know, it's 2nd and 16.
02:47Okay.
02:48And if you call timeout there with 51 seconds left, you're basically saying,
02:52all right, defense, get another stop, and then we'll call timeout again,
02:56and get one more stop, and then we'll get the ball back with 39 or 40 seconds left,
03:01and we'll try to do something we haven't done yet today.
03:04And we'll be getting the ball deep in our own territory.
03:06You just helped me.
03:07You helped remind me why that didn't stand out at the time.
03:09I disagree with the take.
03:11And that's okay.
03:12I understand where you're coming from.
03:14Had you been a team that had done stuff on offense.
03:17Right.
03:17You know what I mean?
03:17I'd like the take if you were a team that had done stuff on defense.
03:20Like, remember, I know a lot of you want to cherry-pick and do,
03:25well, they only gave up 13 points.
03:27Seattle possessed the ball for almost 40 of the 60 minutes.
03:31That is total domination.
03:33It may not have shown up on the scoreboard because their kicker sucked,
03:38and they made what I thought to be, like,
03:40I was thrilled when McDonald went for it on fourth and goal.
03:43In the opener.
03:44I was thrilled when he did that.
03:46Like, no matter who you are, with a condensed field like that,
03:50to me that's a less than 50-50 proposition.
03:53And they left points on the field.
03:56But don't get it twisted.
03:57Seattle moved the ball whenever they needed to in this situation.
04:01And, yeah, I'm with Kyle on that.
04:03If you start calling timeouts,
04:05I think it's way more likely that Seattle ends up with three points than the Niners.
04:09Just my opinion based on the way I was watching that football game.
04:13It just depends on...
04:14They're going to convert on second and 16.
04:16They converted on third and 17 without even throwing the ball.
04:19I can't refute that based on what we would find out later in the game.
04:22But I'm looking at their drives, and their third drive,
04:26they start at their own 18, and they wound up at your 29.
04:30They missed a field goal.
04:31So they went, that would be 53 yards,
04:33and they were able to get down there in fourth and 13.
04:36And the defense, I thought, in spots.
04:38And, you know, you and I can debate back and forth,
04:40but I'm looking here at second and 10.
04:42And Walker runs it, and Sam O, with a tackle for loss, minus four,
04:46and then Stout with a nice defensive play,
04:48and they had to settle for three, and they couldn't get the three.
04:50And so, all right, Niners, you get it at your own 37.
04:53Time to boogie, as you like to say.
04:55Well, maybe no.
04:57Maybe not time to boogie.
04:59And the Niners went for it on that fourth down.
05:01Fourth and one at the Seattle 39.
05:04And that's one where, I mean, Shanahan, what are we doing here?
05:07It's fourth and one at the 39.
05:09Yeah, that was...
05:10And you have not been able to pass protect at all,
05:12so you're going to run play action?
05:13Yeah, I didn't like it either.
05:15And they blitzed, and it's like, oh boy, play action, look at us.
05:18Raise your hand if you think the Niners hand that ball off to McCaffrey
05:22and he gets it.
05:23No, I don't think so.
05:24But how about just, like, get a snap and throw a pass?
05:27Instead of, like, look at us.
05:29We might run it.
05:30Ho, ho.
05:30Look at me, McDonald.
05:32That to me was just, it was awful.
05:34By the time he finished the play action,
05:36there was at least 14 Seahawks in his face.
05:40Yeah, it did not feel good.
05:42Although, again, when a defensive line is owning an offensive line,
05:45play calling often looks absurd.
05:47But if you're going to go for it, then just, like, get a snap and throw a pass.
05:51Or sneak it.
05:52Like, I don't even know if that would have worked,
05:54but that's sort of a little bit of a neutralizer.
05:56Like, even a good defense, it's like you're probably going to get a yard
05:59if you sneak it.
06:00But, yeah.
06:01Like, they were outmanned.
06:03And that would be a long field goal in the wind.
06:05It was kind of windy.
06:06That would be a 57-yarder.
06:07Although, I mean, Eddie D is what he does, right?
06:10I know.
06:10But the Niners, like, every fan said the same thing.
06:13You were thrilled to be down 10-3 at half.
06:15Yep.
06:15You were thrilled.
06:16You did not feel like they should only be down 10-3.
06:19It should have been 20-3.
06:21But it was 10-3.
06:22So, like, okay, let's take that.
06:24And we get the ball.
06:25Coming out in the second half.
06:26So, anyway, how about Yard Doctor in Napa?
06:31What's up, Doctor?
06:32What are you doing?
06:35Hey, I'm just listening to the show.
06:37And I have to say, I'm pretty much lockstep with you, Willard,
06:41because I did not like the way it looked.
06:46These guys could not seem to either rush the passer
06:52or break open on offense.
06:56It just seemed like such a predictable offense.
07:00The other thing that was driving me nuts, and to me it boils down,
07:05I know a lot of your listeners played some high school football.
07:08What was the first thing you learned?
07:10Block and tackle.
07:13Block and tackle.
07:14The tackling was horrendous.
07:17The blockings.
07:18And the last play of the game when they had Brock drop back and pocket pass,
07:25and he got hammered just like he got hammered in Philadelphia when they broke his arm.
07:31It's like, dude, learn from something.
07:34Move back.
07:34Brock is the quickest man off the gun in the NFL of all the quarterbacks.
07:43He can get out of the hole quicker than anybody else.
07:47Why not roll him out once in a while?
07:49Give me a break, brother.
07:50You let them sit back there like a doggone bullseye on a target.
07:56And so, you know, that's kind of my thing.
08:00Thanks for letting us pour our guts out here.
08:04I'm going to therapy now.
08:06Okay.
08:06I hope it works.
08:08Is there like a specific 49er-related therapist that you see, Yard Doctor,
08:13or is this just like a regular therapist?
08:17Yeah, it's called Bushmills.
08:21That's what I'm talking about, Yard Doctor.
08:23Therapy one sip at a time.
08:24That's Yard House, not Yard Doctor.
08:26Attaboy, Yard Doctor.
08:26Anyway, thank you for the call.
08:28And Purdy got absolutely pulverized on that last play.
08:32Not fun.
08:33I mean, I don't know.
08:34After he hit his thumb on the first play in that drive.
08:36Yeah, he's got a bloody thumb, and then that happens.
08:39And I know that all of us are sitting there thinking the same thing.
08:43You're like, you took a shot at the one seed.
08:45You didn't get it.
08:47But the cool thing about this particular playoff game, even though it wasn't
08:51technically a playoff game, the cool thing about it was, it's kind of like
08:54Bob Barker's hole in one or two.
08:56Like, if you lose it, you don't go home.
09:00You get to play another one, and then Brock is laying there on the field.
09:03And you're like, did we really just lose him now, too, for this playoff game
09:11that's coming up next week?
09:13Turns out it's just a stinger.
09:14So it looks like he's okay.
09:15They lost a bunch of other people, though.
09:17They're not well-positioned for this game this week.
09:20But that's the story for another day.
09:24Here's what I'll say.
09:25I fully agree.
09:27I was barking this at the TV screen.
09:29Move Brock out of the pocket more.
09:32The question I'd love to ask, if Kyle were sitting here today,
09:36or anybody who's called plays for a football team,
09:40when you're not running the ball well,
09:42often those kind of, like, those bootlegs and your play action and all of that,
09:48that gets set up by being able to run the ball.
09:51And not only were they not able to run the ball,
09:53it didn't really even feel like they tried to run the ball,
09:57which is why I go back to my original point of,
10:01I don't know if Kyle,
10:03I don't know if Kyle thought he could win this game.
10:05It literally felt like he was calling plays as if he knew upon arrival,
10:12we don't have the horses to do this.
10:15And that, I think, is a very frustrating and sort of defeatist kind of an approach,
10:24even though, like, maybe he's right.
10:26But it's still, like, that's what it felt like.
10:29It didn't even try to run Christian McCaffrey.
10:31I'm looking at my notes, and I'm counting three runs in the first half,
10:36and, you know, they weren't very effective,
10:39and so you couldn't establish it.
10:40And the whole thing about establishing the run
10:42is being able to have, as Shanahan loves,
10:45five play, seven play, 11 play, 15 play drive.
10:49They go run, pass, pass, punt.
10:52Run, sack, pass, punt.
10:55And that's your two opening drives,
10:56where you weren't even able to, like, get a first down
10:59and, you know, try to establish the threat of McCaffrey here,
11:03and then maybe it's Juszczyk and it's Kittle and the rest of it.
11:06And then the next drive you get, pass, pass, pass, pass.
11:10Purdy scrambles, fourth and one.
11:12You pass, they blitz, and you have to turn it over on down.
11:15So you were unable to keep the ball long enough to even get the run going,
11:20even though, if you look at the game,
11:21what do you have, eight runs for the whole game, McCaffrey?
11:25Yeah, the team had 12, right?
11:27Right.
11:27And some of those were Brock scrambles.
11:28Exactly, Brock scrambles.
11:29That was the most effective run you had.
11:31So you couldn't run it,
11:31and so you were continuing to try to do play action,
11:34and even though, you know, Seattle's kind of looking at that,
11:37and I don't think that they were actually laughing,
11:39but if I'm Seattle, I'm laughing.
11:41Yeah, play action.
11:43Go ahead and play act it.
11:44Go ahead and give it to McCaffrey.
11:45We're here, and if you pull it out and you're going to pass it,
11:48well, we're only rushing four anyway,
11:50and our four is better than your five.
11:52So, yeah, throw it to whoever you want,
11:55and he can catch it, and we're going to be there.
11:57And Juwan had the one where he got absolutely just caved in, pummeled,
12:03and you had a couple where, you know, you tried to get a screen to him,
12:07and boom, they were there.
12:08They were there on everything.
12:10Yeah, they beat him up.
12:11They beat him up.
12:11They were better.
12:13So even if you want to, like, roll him out and do this,
12:15and trickeration, I don't think that anything was going to work.
12:18Think about it.
12:18If you're an offensive play caller and you're thinking about,
12:21all right, we're kind of outmanned in this one,
12:23so we're going to have to do some quirky other stuff.
12:26You're going to try, like, let's try A,
12:29and if A doesn't work, we'll move to B.
12:32And if B doesn't work, we'll move to C.
12:34And I think you even said it earlier.
12:35You're like, it's not working, so try some different things.
12:38Yeah.
12:38Well, how many plays did he even have in the first quarter and a half of this football game
12:43to sort of say, oh, A's not working, let's move to B.
12:49Oh, B's not working, let's move to C.
12:51Their first two drives, six plays.
12:53And that's the first quarter.
12:55Poof.
12:55Yep.
12:56So how many, you know what I'm getting at?
12:58Totally.
12:58Like, okay, hey, Kyle, try something different.
13:01And he's like, can I have the ball?
13:03Can I have the ball?
13:04And no, you can't have the ball,
13:06because Seattle's going to possess it the whole time.
13:08And then you do get the ball,
13:10and you try A, and then you try B,
13:11and that's not good either.
13:13That doesn't work.
13:14So that's what I'm getting at.
13:16I just, I'm going to remove myself from the conversation about
13:20is the offense to blame or the defense to blame
13:23and who was worse and who was better.
13:25To me, it was all outplayed.
13:28All of it.
13:29All of it was outplayed on Saturday night.
13:32That's not about blame one side more than the other.
13:34I just don't think anybody was able to do what they would like to do
13:39because they were just getting outplayed no matter who had the ball.
13:42That's true, but, I mean, you could do things like, you know,
13:45go up tempo, go no huddle, or...
13:47Got to have the ball.
13:48Right, but when they finally did get the ball,
13:50and you kind of stuck with what you were doing in, you know,
13:53the one play where, you know, you get down to the 39,
13:55and it's fourth and one, and you go for it,
13:58and you run the play action, and they blitz,
14:00and so now you're kind of screwed because, you know,
14:02Purdy doesn't even have time to get all the way back to his drop,
14:05and he's being swallowed up again.
14:07I just thought that Shanahan was in a spot where he was sticking to what he was doing,
14:12what he likes to do too much, where none of it was working.
14:16I think that's fair.
14:17I think that's totally fair.
14:19It was not a great night for his play calling.
14:22At the same time, I do...
14:24When your lines are getting dominated, you...
14:29Your options are limited.
14:31Right.
14:31Your options are limited.
14:32And to your point, when Seattle scores their field goal to go up 10-0,
14:35you get the ball back at the 40 because they kicked the ball out of bounds,
14:38and shout out Seattle's special teams.
14:40My God.
14:41Well, the kicker was terrible, and he's had a good year.
14:43Two misses and a kick out of bounds, and now you get it at your own 40,
14:46and so the Niners, thinking about what you're talking about,
14:49which is, oh my God, we're getting overwhelmed, we're going to run a screen.
14:52And so they run a screen to Kittle, and they lose six.
14:55Yeah, second and 16.
14:56Right.
14:56So even though the play call might have been the right one,
14:59they totally outflanked you, and they roll up and they tackle you,
15:03even though the screen might have been the call because they've been all over you
15:06in all ways, and yet Kittle gets it, and by the time he catches it,
15:10whoop, you're down.
15:11I thought Kittle's stats that they kept putting up there throughout the game
15:15were the best snapshot of what was going on.
15:17Like five catches, like four yards.
15:19Yeah, he had two catches for four yards.
15:20Now he's got three catches for six yards.
15:22Right.
15:22Now he's got four catches for nine yards.
15:24I'm like, oh my God, Seattle is tackling the hell out of them.
15:28Great job by Seattle.
15:29Yep.
15:30Great job by their defense.
15:32Okay, keep them coming.
15:348 at 8, 9, 5, 7, 9, 5, 7.
15:37Specifically, what frustrated you about Saturday night?
15:42OG in San Jose.
15:45Hey, OG, thank you for calling.
15:47Hey, Willard.
15:49How's it going?
15:50Look, I was frustrated by the fact that Kyle went away from what had been working
15:57in that six-game win streak.
15:59We needed two and three tight end sets.
16:03When you're getting beat in the trenches, you know, football is a numbers game.
16:08Just add to the numbers.
16:10You don't have the players.
16:11You're getting beat up.
16:12You know, I wanted to see Jake Conjus.
16:16I wanted to see Kendrick Bourne.
16:18We didn't see them.
16:19Sky Moore, he didn't touch the ball on offense.
16:21So all these things they added up.
16:23And, you know, I don't want us to make the same mistake next week.
16:27I think it's going to be a very similar game.
16:30The same thing on defense.
16:32We need more guys up front.
16:35Maybe go with a five-man front and six DBs.
16:40I'd rather play Marquez Siegel and some of our young guys rather than a seven-string linebacker
16:48I've never heard of.
16:49So that's where I see it.
16:51And, you know, I just want to get your guys' take also.
16:55What do you think is going to happen if the Niners lose?
16:57Could this be Shanahan's last game?
16:59Thanks, OG.
17:00OG, thank you.
17:01Short answer, no.
17:04Long answer, no chance.
17:05Yeah, absolutely not.
17:06This is not.
17:07Possibly.
17:07Not Kyle Shanahan.
17:08Kyle Shanahan is in less danger with his job status than some minted made dudes in this league.
17:16Like Mike Tomlin and John Harbaugh have more questions around them.
17:20I was even thinking about Sean McDermott.
17:21Yeah, they've got.
17:22If Buffalo has another flame out.
17:23Which they might.
17:25They might.
17:25They've got a tough one.
17:26Jacksonville is on a heater.
17:28We can get into this as the week goes on.
17:30But, you know, we've got four teams that are home dogs.
17:34Home dogs.
17:35It's a hell of a playoff.
17:36There's one major favorite and the rest feel like coin flips.
17:38I've run the numbers on the history of home dogs since 2000.
17:42And I can share that as we get deeper into the week.
17:44I can't wait.
17:45I can't wait.
17:46Yeah, Kyle's in no danger.
