The Fui Toong On Association is celebrating 107 years in the country, as well as marking the Chinese Year of the Horse. It was done through a ceremony held on New Year's Day. Alicia Boucher has the highlights.
00:00It's a transitional year for those in the Chinese community, from the year of the snake, signifying shedding of the old, to the year of the horse, a year for pushing forward.
00:10Here in TNT, the Fui Tongan Association marks another milestone through a mood of celebration, inclusive of entertainment like this lion dance.
00:19President of the Association, Joe Chan, notes that the entity was founded in 1919 as a safe space by Chinese hacker immigrants who came to TNT seeking dignity, opportunities and a future.
00:38He says they gave back to society in various ways, including through commerce, culture and education.
00:44Why this legacy matter? Because in 2026, we marked 107 years of existence, not as a reality of this past, but as a living testament to unity and purpose.
01:03Chan says there are new challenges ahead, but he signals that the Association will rise to them with compassion, unity and the strengthening of its community.
01:13To our older elders, we honour your wisdom. To our youth, we entrust our future.
01:25Across generation, let us carry forward the torch, faithful to our root of our ascent in China,
01:36forfeiting in our part, and stay fast in our commitment to one another in Trinidad and Tobago.
