Want to attract and retain exceptional people while eliminating the constant need for micromanagement?

In this episode of The Mason Duchatschek Show, Mason Duchatschek sits down with Steven Puri, a veteran Hollywood film executive and producer whose career spans some of the most demanding creative environments in the world.

Steven has worked on blockbuster films including Independence Day, Die Hard, and Wolverine, and has held leadership roles at DreamWorks, Sony, and Fox. In Hollywood, missed deadlines cost millions, reputations are fragile, and teams must perform at an elite level under pressure. That environment forces leaders to get culture and mission right or fail fast.

In this conversation, Steven explains why leaders who want high performance without micromanagement must do two things exceptionally well:

Declare a clear mission
Define and protect a strong culture

You will hear why culture cannot be left to chance, how clarity replaces control, and what business leaders can learn from Hollywood about focus, accountability, creativity, and execution.

This episode is especially valuable for CEOs, business owners, founders, and senior leaders who want teams that take ownership, move fast, and consistently deliver results without constant oversight.

Why This Conversation Matters

Most leaders say they want engaged, accountable teams. Few intentionally design the conditions that make that possible.

Steven shares real world lessons from environments where creativity, speed, and collaboration are non negotiable. These insights translate directly to business, especially for organizations struggling with disengagement, friction, or leadership bottlenecks.

If you want fewer meetings, less hand holding, and more ownership from your people, this conversation will challenge how you think about leadership.

00:00truly as a leader, there are two big things that you do. You declare a mission. We are here to
00:06cure cancer. We are here to develop batteries that'll power the world. We're here to make
00:11great romantic comedies, right? Whatever that is, you declare a mission. The second thing is
00:15you declare a culture. This is how we treat each other. This is how we treat our customers. And
00:20this is how we treat our competitors. If you do those two things well, you attract the right
00:25people into your organization. Because I know that if I'm here going, we're here to cure cancer and
00:31this is how we're going to operate. And Mason's grandmother, you know, like died of cancer and he
00:36came here because I declared a mission. I don't have to wonder what Mason is doing Tuesday at three.
00:41He's moving the ball down the field.
