The coming years could see national teams in the West Indies, playing in international competitions.

That's the word coming from CEO of Cricket West Indies- Chris Dehring. Speaking on the Mason and Guest show,

he indicated that opportunities are opening up for national teams at the Pan American Games and the Olympics.
Transcript
00:00How would you feel seeing the Trinidad and Tobago cricket team at the Olympics?
00:04Well, it may be a possibility in the future, so says Cricket West Indies CEO Chris Dering.
00:09There is an entire future that is going to unfold this year, this coming year,
00:14starting with the Pan American Games qualifications in 2026.
00:19The Pan American Games are going to be held in 2027, where cricket is back on the calendar,
00:24or in the calendar for the very first time.
00:26We are working through all the mechanics and logistics.
00:31In the coming years, Dering believes that the structure of regional cricket may change
00:34to accommodate individual teams wishing to take part in the Pan American Games and the Olympics.
00:40But if you think about Pan American Games qualifications every two years,
00:47Olympic Games qualifications as well thrown into the mix,
00:51you can see a different cadence of cricket taking place in the Caribbean over the next 5, 10, 15, 20 years.
01:00And of course, individual countries are who play in those tournaments.
01:05So it won't necessarily be a Leewards and Wynwards.
01:08It will be a St. Vincent.
01:10It will be a Dominica.
01:11It will be an Antigua, Barbados, Jamaica, Trinidad,
01:14competing to qualify now for a bigger prize, the Pan American Games, and even into the Olympic Games.
01:22He believes that the tournament will give individual nations a chance to show what they can do on an international stage.
01:28You know, we're quite excited about that new paradigm that is happening,
01:34because it will give, I think, countries, nations an opportunity to parade on the global stage.
01:40It's one of the challenges of West Indies cricket, in that there's no such country called the West Indies.
01:46And so West Indies winning, we all feel good, but individual nations, governments,
01:52don't feel like they're getting, I guess, the political goodwill that follows.
01:57And therefore, it's more difficult for them to invest in national programs like the under-13s, like the under-15s.
