Perth and much of the state sweltered through the first of three hot days, as a severe heatwave kicked off. Emergency services are bracing for any bushfire threats and standing by to assist with a tropical cyclone that's intensified far off the state's coast.

00:43strong and gusty easterly winds and a risk of thunderstorms.
00:48With the hot conditions comes the risk of bushfires.
00:51Emergency services bringing on two additional Blackhawk aircrafts for this high risk period.
00:57Remember fires can start anywhere in the state. We're 93% bushfire prone.
01:03And in these conditions fires can escalate and travel extremely quickly.
01:07Despite the forecast, many are still planning to flock to the beach on Christmas Day,
01:12hoping the water offers some relief from those high temperatures.
01:17Actually I like the hotter weather because it's a lot more refreshing when you come to the beach as well after.
01:22So yeah, I prefer this weather a lot more.

01:27As parts of WA swelter, tropical cyclone Grant continues to strengthen offshore.
01:33The cyclone is set to impact the Cocos Keeling Islands as a Category 2 system late on Christmas Eve or on the morning of Christmas Day.
01:42It's pretty overcast and cloudy. The wind has picked up.
01:47We get the occasional shower and the occasional little bit of gust of wind.
01:52But at this stage, it's just that sort of wait and see.
