Bicycling's Tom Messina gives his take on a 3 layer system.
Transcript
00:00When it gets as cold out as it does, how many layers do you need?
00:04Well, I asked Dan Shabanov his layering system, and it comes down to three layers.
00:10Firstly is your base layer. That's against your skin, and the goal of that is to keep moisture off.
00:16Above that, you have your heat retention layer, I guess your middle layer,
00:21and that's supposed to keep all of the warmth in.
00:23And then lastly is the outer shell or the outer layer, and that keeps the elements out, wind and rain.
00:30But it's all dynamic, right?
00:31So I really will only wear an outer layer that has a reversible zipper because those act as vents, right?
00:38You're going up a climb, naturally you're going to heat up, open up the zipper, take your gloves off,
00:44crest down to the scent, zip down, put your gloves back on.
00:47I like things that pack away a little bit smaller.
00:50And a good test is if you're outside getting your route set and you're all ready to go,
00:56and you're already kind of warm, it's probably a good sign you're overdressed for that ride.
