Paladin is hired by Henry Ritchie, the leading citizen of the town of Ashley to stop a dam building project financed by Central City and an engineer named Mike O'Hare. The dam will cost Ashley its water supply. Other less sophisticated gunslingers are also vying for the job. Paladin's first attempt to stop the project is a simple act of sabotage that is not direct enough for Ritchie who wants O'Hare stopped by any means necessary. Paladin soon comes to realize that O'Hare is not the unreasonable man he was led to believe he is and that he could be working for the wrong side.

00:00The greatest calamities in history were made by words set in anger.
00:19If you can't back it up, don't speak in anger.
00:30I'm sorry.
00:32I can't.
00:34I can't.
00:36I can't.
00:38I can't.
00:40You know, I can't.
00:42The only one that's that's the only way in the city of New York is to be here.
00:46We're going to see the same story in New York City.
00:50We're going to be here in New York City.
00:52We're going to be here in New York City.
00:54Let's go.
00:56We're going to be here in New York City.
00:58Your gunmen are here.
01:16Good. Bring them in.
01:17You still have a minute to change all this. One minute.
01:20My mind's made up.
01:22What right do you have to make up your mind about life and death?
01:26The years I've spent in this town.
01:28And the sweat.
01:29So you hire a filthy gunman to save the fruits of your life.
01:31I don't care what he is so long as he does the job.
01:34And if this gunman won't help me, there are others on the way.
01:36They're not hard to find.
01:40I never thought I'd have to say I'm ashamed of my own father.
01:53Well, hello.
01:54Nicest scenery since I got here.
01:56I want to talk to Richie.
01:59He's in there.
02:01No.
02:05Okay.
02:10Let's go.
02:40Oh, thank you.
02:45It's entirely my pleasure.
02:46A pretty girl completes a beautiful morning.
02:49It sounds as though you've said that before.
02:51I have, and I'm just as sure you've heard it before.
02:54May I help you?
02:55I believe Mr. Richie's expecting me.
02:57My name's Paladin.
02:59Oh.
03:00Same breed, different feathers.
03:02There's another man with a gun to see you.
03:12Oh.
03:13It wouldn't be fair if I didn't talk to him, Marsh.
03:16He's come a long way.
03:17Well, that's all right, Mr. Richie.
03:18I understand.
03:20Me and my boys would like to do the job.
03:22If the man needs calming down, we'll calm him.
03:23That's exactly the kind of situation I don't want.
03:26You'll step outside for a minute, I'll get rid of him.
03:28I'll see you later.
03:29That's enough of that, Marsh.
03:30What's the matter?
03:32Your turn, Mr. Paladin.
03:51Mr. Richie?
03:53Yeah?
03:53My name's Paladin.
03:57Sit down.
03:59Was that Joe Marsh who just left here?
04:00That's who it was, you know?
04:02Not very well, but as well as I'd care to.
04:04Is your town doing business with him?
04:05We'll do business with the devil if he's a man we need.
04:08You were just interviewing one of his assistants.
04:11Maybe I should be pleased about that.
04:13You read what's been going on here?
04:14A fight over the water in this area.
04:16The Central City wants the water for themselves.
04:18They don't care what happens to our town.
04:22Hear that?
04:24Dynamiting to fill the dam.
04:25Now look there.
04:27Every spring, the snow's melting those mountains.
04:30Fill a lake, run over into the streams and irrigate our lands.
04:34We live by that water.
04:36Without it, we're done.
04:37The newspaper interview quoted you quite fully, Mr. Richie.
04:40Building a dam across our lake, aqueducts to their city, stealing our water.
04:44Well, let's say with their political power and influence, they're usurping your water.
04:48And it sounds like you have a good reason to be angry.
04:51You know about this situation, huh?
04:53It's an unfortunately common condition in the West.
04:59Tell the truth, I just about decided on Joe Marsh.
05:02Oh, you want some killing done.
05:04No, no, absolutely not.
05:06All I want is to stop the construction of that dam.
05:09I want to make it so hot for Mike O'Hare, he'll take his men back to Central City.
05:12Who's Mike O'Hare?
05:13Head engineer, very tough man.
05:16Well, if he's that tough, you aren't going to beat him by scaring off a few of his construction hands.
05:20Maybe not.
05:22But we can make the cost of the project so high, the city will give it up.
05:25If you hire Joe Marsh, it'll be by the gun.
05:26He doesn't think any other way.
05:29Do you?
05:31Mr. Richie, I never use this gun unless I have to.
05:34That's why you'll find my fee somewhat high.
05:37How would you do it?
05:39Should we say $1,000?
05:41How would you do it?
05:43Well, I haven't the faintest idea, yet.
05:51You understand, if it doesn't work out the way you say, I'll expect you to use your gun.
05:55In two weeks, Central City should be looking for a new source of water.
06:00I don't know.
06:01You worried about Joe Marsh?
06:03Suppose you let me do the explaining.
06:05Yeah.
06:05Yeah, why don't you, uh, settle it between you.
06:09Mm-hmm.
06:23Mr. Richie, uh, one of me and my boys are going to work for you, huh?
06:27Marsh, you're going to be terribly angry with me.
06:28Oh, really?
06:29Yes, really.
06:29It seems I convinced Mr. Richie that I'm the man for the job.
06:33You?
06:33That's right.
06:35You better change your mind, Mr. and fast.
06:36You think he can make his ride all the way out here and then say nothing doing just like that, huh?
06:40He's right, Mr. Richie.
06:42You should pay these men for their trouble.
06:43$50 is a fair amount.
06:44$50?
06:45For the lot.
06:46There you are.
06:46You don't mind if we hang around a while, do you?
06:50Just in case the job turns up again.
06:53Come on, boys, let's get a drink.
07:05Oh, here.
07:07Well, he's not afraid to ride alone.
07:09He's carrying a gun, though.
07:11I told him if he were his men set foot in this town, there could be some shooting.
07:15What a bloodthirsty idea, Mr. Richie.
07:16Here, borrow this.
07:19Never make a threat you don't mean to carry out, Mr. Richie.
07:23Embarrassment could be the least result.
07:25It was just said in anger.
07:26The greatest calamities in history were the result of words just said in anger.
07:30I'm here for the mail, Mr. Richie.
07:46I'll get it for you.
07:50Richie, my men want to come to town.
07:53They want to buy things.
07:54I'll sell them nothing.
07:55If it wasn't for the post office, I wouldn't let you in the store.
07:57Our needs are stronger than yours.
07:59And if you weren't such a stubborn fool, you'd know it.
08:02From now on, things are going to be different.
08:03The reason won't make a dent on you.
08:06Maybe something else will.
08:08Oh, I see.
08:09I warned you.
08:11A gunfighter.
08:12I don't care for that term.
08:14Well, what do you know?
08:15A sensitive gunfighter.
08:18Well, take advice if you will.
08:21If you want your thin skin unbroken, keep away from my construction areas.
08:25Well, now, you wouldn't shoot a man without due cause, would you?
08:28Well, don't give me cause.
08:30That's all.
08:33Thank you, miss.
08:34You're welcome.
08:41Richie, if just one of my men get hurt, you'd better run for the hills.
08:58Well, don't look at me, miss Richie.
09:00I just arrived.
09:01It was a beautiful morning, Mr. Paladin, until you put clouds in it.
09:12I'm not asking for your approval, gentlemen.
09:14I wanted you to meet Paladin and know what he's doing here.
09:21You pull us off without killing.
09:23The rest of us will double what Richie's paying you.
09:25Oh, now, don't cinch him in too tight, Ed.
09:27He's a gunfighter.
09:29What's he going to use in case of trouble?
09:31Brains, Mr. Gardner.
09:33Now, that can have kind of temporary effects.
09:35But it does leave people alive, and that's an advantage when the dust settles.
09:40Pass the word around to keep all cattle and sheep out of the South Wash.
09:43Paladin's going to blow one of the coffered dams and flood O'Hare out.
09:46Now, just a minute, Richie.
09:47I said I'd look into it.
09:49I don't see how you expect to get direct results without direct action.
09:52Richie, you hired me to do a job.
09:53Now, leave me alone to do it.
09:54Well, when are you going to start?
09:56When I'm ready.
09:57Gentlemen.
10:12Anything.
10:14Nothing but rain.
10:15Let's hold it down tight.
10:26Any water touches that cement, an O'Hare will go up like a rocket.
10:29Any water touches that cement, an O'Hare will go up like an O'Hare will go up like an O'Hare will go up like an O'Hare will go up like an O'Hare will go up like an O'Hare will go up like an O'Hare will go up like an O'Hare will go up like an O'Hare will go up like an O'Hare will go up like an O'Hare will go up like an O'Hare will go up like an O'Hare will go up like an O'Hare will go up like an O'Hare will go up like an O'Hare will go up like an O'Hare will go up like an O'Hare will go up like an O'Hare will go up like an O'Hare will go up like an O'Hare will go up like an O'Hare will go up like an O'Hare will go up like an O'Hare will go up
10:59Let's go.
11:29Let's go.
11:39Richard...
11:42You're gonna pay for the destruction of my supplies.
11:45Supplies? Destruction?
11:48The complaint department's over there.
11:51The complaint department's over there.
11:57You're a clever fellow, no question.
11:59Maybe I'll hire some gunslingers to put you against your own kind.
12:03That ought to be interesting.
12:05Oh, do you have to hire from the outside?
12:07I was told you and your construction gangs were very tough men.
12:11I'm an engineer. I've spent most of my life building.
12:14Not destroying.
12:16The likes of you have been around since the beginning of time.
12:19You haven't changed the world any.
12:21And in regards to being tough,
12:23let me try and see if that's true.
12:33I'd rather not.
12:35There are a number of years between us.
12:49What's the matter?
13:05Can't you fight without a gun?
13:07I don't understand.
13:19Don't you, Pop?
13:23It's simple.
13:25There's a man in town.
13:29I don't understand.
13:31He had a hair cold right in front of him.
13:33He could have settled the whole mess right then and there without gunplay.
13:35Why didn't he?
13:37Did you expect him to beat up an old man?
13:39What's happening to you?
13:41I don't understand.
13:43I don't understand.
13:45I don't understand.
13:47I don't understand.
13:48He had a hair cold right in front of him.
13:49He could have settled the whole mess right then and there without gunplay.
13:51Why didn't he?
13:52Did you expect him to beat up an old man?
13:54What's happening to you?
13:55O'Hare?
13:56Paladin?
13:57I wanna talk to you.
13:59Did you expect him to beat up an old man?
14:02What's happening to you?
14:15O'Hare!
14:18Paladin, I want to talk to you.
14:26All right, come on in.
14:29Come on.
14:48That coffee smelled so good last night, I thought it might be worth a taste.
14:52Give me a cup of coffee.
14:55If you come here to start a ruckus, mister, I just want to say that handling these things is not my business.
15:02But at this distance, I couldn't miss.
15:06At this distance, you're too close.
15:08I want to talk to you.
15:09You're too close, son.
15:10I want to go.
15:11I'm going to go.
15:12Come over to my tent.
15:14What do you want?
15:16Well, a little civility might be a good start.
15:18I'm your guest.
15:20Why didn't you take a slug on me this morning?
15:22I was outclassed.
15:24Oh, that's a lot of hogwash.
15:26You could have mopped the streets with me.
15:28Now, why didn't you?
15:30Well, I've always liked men who build.
15:32One of my great idols was the Emperor Hadrian.
15:34Hadrian?
15:36Well, that's a lot of hogwash.
15:38You could have mopped the streets with me.
15:40Now, why didn't you?
15:41Well, I've always liked men who build.
15:43What do you know about Hadrian?
15:46Well, he was an emperor and a great builder.
15:49Is that what you think you are, Mr. O'Hare?
15:51You seem to be making all the demands of an emperor.
15:53What else could I do for those stiff-necked, jugged heads of Ashley?
15:57I offered them twice the value for their soil.
16:00I even convinced legislation
16:03to set aside fertile lands upstate
16:05to be given to them as extra compensation.
16:08Is that unfair?
16:09Do the people of Ashley know this?
16:11Of course they do.
16:12They were notified for two months.
16:14Notified how?
16:15By letter from the State Capitol.
16:18Mr. Ritchie has one himself.
16:20Well, do you have a copy?
16:22No, I haven't.
16:23But I can get one from Central City.
16:25How long will that take?
16:26About two days.
16:29Or maybe sooner.
16:30I'll get one and I'll bring it to you.
16:32I'm a builder.
16:33I want to make this beautiful place,
16:34well, a new Athens.
16:35A Rome.
16:36But the first necessity is water.
16:37I am back early tonight.
16:38I thought we might have a little chat, Mr. Ritchie.
16:39What's on your mind, Mr. Ritchie?
16:40What's on your mind, Mr. Ritchie?
16:45I am back early tonight.
16:53I thought we might have a little chat, Mr. Ritchie.
17:08What's on your mind?
17:09A letter, the contents of which you seem to have kept to yourself.
17:12Letter? I don't know what you're talking about.
17:15Ritchie, how many other people in Ashley know the terms for surrender of the town's water rights?
17:19That's no concern of yours, Paladin. You're hired to do a job. Do it.
17:22O'Hare's given me his version of what goes on. Now I'd like yours.
17:25You're being paid for only one version.
17:28Mine.
17:30I built this town.
17:32I watched it grow for 25 years, and it's going to grow even more.
17:36Every year, more farmers, more ranchers come out here to settle.
17:39Why wouldn't they be willing to settle on the new town side?
17:41A new town side? No, sir. Not after the years of sweat and labor that went into making this valley what it is.
17:46Nobody's going to take it away from me.
17:48Nobody's going to push me out and tell me where to go.
17:50If I did when I was young, I can't do again. I won't even try.
17:57I've got a plot of ground right next to my wife's grave, and I aim to be here in this town when my time comes.
18:03That's a highly personal outlook.
18:05What about the other people in this town?
18:07People here have always done what I've asked them.
18:10What did you do with the letter?
18:12I tore it up.
18:15Richie, this is an old fight.
18:16The rights of the many against the rights of the few.
18:19And I don't agree that you have the right, moral or legal, to decide for your neighbors.
18:25I'll see that you're paid for your expenses, Paladin.
18:28You're no longer needed here.
18:30That's your privilege.
18:31Good night, sir.
18:42I wish you hadn't.
18:44He'll turn to Joe Marsh now.
18:46I'm afraid so.
18:48Why don't you talk to Joe Marsh first and get him to move on and leave town?
18:53Oh, then you really don't mind a little shooting.
18:56That would have to follow.
18:58Good night.
19:01I've got ten square miles to cover.
19:25I can't do it with my men.
19:27Look, you slipped through yourself.
19:28Well, I took you by surprise.
19:30We know Joe Marsh is coming.
19:31It won't be that easy for him.
19:33Well, we've practically no ammunition.
19:35Because that's telling you no secret.
19:36How many rounds?
19:37Two or three to the rifle.
19:39Unless you'd like to pick some out of that cement.
19:41I'm afraid we haven't time.
19:44Hey, what made you change sides?
19:47Education.
19:47Didn't that same education warn you to get out when you know Marsh and his gang will arrive?
19:53You know I must have skipped that class.
19:55I know you're going to withdraw.
19:56Just let me see.
20:03Hello, Mr. Barr.
20:03You know Billidge.
20:05Oh.
20:06No, there's going to be a happy drink.
20:06Very stallion was possible.
20:08Oh.
20:08No, Bill de Groce.
20:10Just made a surprise.
20:12I have no proof for me.
20:13Larry can have no proof ofição.
20:15You can be promised reformed when you're on your farm...
20:15You can get away...
20:16I am a happy Wrap eigenen.
20:16Can you please?
20:17So, if you guys might have a happy house?
20:18I pray about...
20:19I don't know if you are long in your mouth.
20:20I'll be back with a هيечение.
20:21Please take 20 inches.
20:22Algo deскult, Sacola,
20:23Blast powder.
20:53That's north, number three dam.
21:12Get mounted, men!
21:18Let's go.
21:28Let's go.
21:38Try and cover me.
21:44Every time I head shows, try and hit it.
21:58Let's go.
22:10Let's go.
22:14Let's go.
22:26Let's go.
22:30Let's go.
22:42Let's go.
22:46Let's go.
23:06Let's go.
23:09All right, hold it.
23:14Let's go.
23:30Let's go.
23:34I thought you left town.
23:36I did.
23:37To help Mr. O'Hare.
23:39He gave me a copy of a very interesting letter.
23:44I'm just debating whether to post it on the town bulletin board or let the people hear it from their leading citizen who always has their best interest at heart.
24:00I do.
24:12I don't doubt it.
24:13But I don't like to see one man control the lives of an entire community.
24:18Well, Mr. Ritchie?
24:19Well, Mr. Ritchie?
24:20You've run out of gunfighters, Pop.
24:23Oh, smile, Mr. Ritchie.
24:26You and your town can have a prosperous year before we leave.
24:29Me and my men need an abundance of surprise.
24:32Also friends.
24:33Mr. Paladin explained how you feel.
24:36It'll be hard starting again.
24:39New place of my age.
24:41No, thanks.
25:01Goodbye, Marsh.
25:03Ride far.
25:09I'm out of breath.
25:11Hello, Marsh.
25:12I'm out of breath.
25:14I'm out of breath.
25:16I'm out of breath.
25:18Oh, my dear, it's alright.
25:21Let's go.
25:22Let's go.
25:27Have a great day.
25:30Good night.
25:32I'm out of breath.
25:33Oh, my dear, this is a very good day.
25:36Well, my dear, my dear.
25:37THE END
