Shadow Work and Pensions Secretary Helen Whately has criticised the government’s new youth employment measures, calling them “absurd”. She said ministers are spending nearly £1bn on creating work placements for young people while simultaneously imposing tax rises that, she argues will lead to hundreds of thousands of job losses. 00:00There is an absurdity in what the government is doing, which is today announcing the best part of a billion pounds on work placements and creating jobs for young people's government-backed jobs.
00:11But actually, just two weeks ago, they had a budget which is forecast to destroy 200,000 jobs, a budget a year ago destroying 150,000 jobs.
00:21And what we know is many of these jobs are in sectors like hospitality, which are often the first job for a young person.
00:27So what the government is doing is, with their tax rises and policies, destroying real jobs that businesses want to employ people for but can't afford to,
00:35and then using the taxes that they've put on those businesses to then pay for government-created jobs.
00:40To me, that is just absurd. Labour think that government is the answer, but actually, government here is the problem.
