00:00Today, December 7th, we celebrate Saint Ambrose of Milan, one of the greatest fathers of the Latin Church.
00:08a man whose voice shaped Western Christian thought.
00:13He is known as a charismatic bishop, a sought-after spiritual master, a formidable preacher,
00:20and especially as the one who knew how to speak in the heart of a troubled era to bring the masses back to the faith.
00:26Ambroise is the symbol of firmness combined with gentleness, of culture allied with authority.
00:35and humidity combined with a courage that does not back down before any emperor.
00:41Even today, his legacy continues to inspire millions of believers around the world.
00:47Ambrose was born around 340 into an influential, cultured Roman family deeply attached to order.
00:58From a very early age, he distinguished himself by his sharp intelligence and his sense of justice.
01:03and an astonishing ability to bring together the most opposing minds.
01:07Trained in law, he was first and foremost a respected governor, an exemplary statesman,
01:15who had no religious function when he arrived in Milan to appease a conflict between Catholic and Arian partisans.
01:24And that's when her life takes a dramatic turn.
01:26A huge crowd, impressed by his wisdom and natural authority,
01:33suddenly starts shouting his name.
01:36She wants Ambrose as her bishop.
01:39He, though a simple catechumen, is not even baptized.
01:45He backs away, refuses, tries to flee, but nothing works.
01:50We discover in him a light that he himself does not yet see.
01:55One week later, he was baptized, ordained and consecrated Bishop of Milan.
02:02Providence had just chosen a guide.
02:06His episcopate was a true transformation for the city.
02:11Ambrose preached, taught, wrote, advised, and protected the poor.
02:16It opposes the abuses of the powerful and calms the theological conflicts that divide Christian communities.
02:23His influence quickly spread beyond the borders of his diocese.
02:29He became one of the four great Latin doctors and a reference for the entire universal Church.
02:36Ambrose fears no one, not even the emperors.
02:40When Theodosius committed the massacre of Thessalonica,
02:44He has the unique courage to block her entry to the cathedral.
02:47and to impose a public penance on him.
02:51This is a historic gesture.
02:53For the first time, political power is reminded that it is not above God.
03:00Ambrose is also a man of peace and a spiritual father.
03:04It was he who guided Augustine towards faith.
03:07He, through his preaching, dispelled the last doubts of the future saint.
03:12His writings on baptism, morality, prayer, and faith
03:17continue to be studied today.
03:21He died in 397 in great peace.
03:26surrounded by his faithful followers who already saw him as a saintly bishop,
03:30An incomparable sage, a beacon for future generations.
03:35Lord, you who raised Saint Ambrose to the rank of doctor of the faith,
03:46Grant us, through his intercession, wisdom in our choices.
03:50strength in adversity and peace in our relationships.
03:55May his courage inspire our loyalty.
03:59may its gentleness illuminate our words
04:01and that his faith may nourish ours.
04:05Saint Ambrose, guide of truth seekers
04:10pray for us.
04:11Amen.
