00:00Today, December 3rd, we celebrate François-Xavier as well as the names Xavier, Saverio, Xavi, and Javiera.
00:08and all those which derive their origin from the Basque toponym Xavier, meaning the new house.
00:15But the most famous name associated with this date remains Saint Francis Xavier.
00:20one of the most influential missionaries in Christian history,
00:24tireless traveler, protector of missions and major figure of the universal Church.
00:30His name still resonates today in thousands of schools, universities and parishes around the world.
00:37Let us approach this burning life, marked by courage, determination and boundless faith.
00:44François-Xavier was born in 1506 at Xavier Castle, in Spanish Navarre.
00:51Born into a noble family, he grew up in the heart of a changing Europe,
00:55between political conflicts, religious upheavals and opening up to new continents.
01:02His youth was that of a brilliant, ambitious young man, passionate about his studies.
01:07He joined the University of Paris, where he taught philosophy.
01:11known for her sharp intelligence and natural charisma.
01:15It was there that a man would change his life, Ignatius of Loyola, the future founder of the Jesuits.
01:23Ignace quickly notices young Xavier's depth of mind, but also his personal ambition.
01:31He often repeats this Gospel phrase to her,
01:33"What does it profit a man to gain the whole world, yet forfeit his soul?"
01:39For a long time, Xavier resisted, convinced that he was destined for a brilliant academic career.
01:46But little by little, the words touched her heart.
01:50In 1534, in a chapel in Montmartre,
01:54Francis Xavier, along with Ignatius and some companions, pronounces
01:58the vows that would give birth to the Society of Jesus.
02:01Very quickly, his destiny takes a turn towards the unknown.
02:05The King of Portugal requests missionaries for the East.
02:09Ignatius sends Francis.
02:12He embarked in 1541 on an endless 13-month journey.
02:18Upon his arrival in Goa, India,

02:35He sleeps little, prays a lot, walks tirelessly.

02:44But his zeal doesn't stop there.
02:47He dreams of going even further,
02:49where no one has yet proclaimed the Gospel.
02:51He travels to southern India,
02:54then cross the seas to the Moluccas islands.
02:58Everywhere he went, he founded Christian communities,
03:01translated from prayers, teaches human dignity,
03:05It lifts up the excluded and the poor.
03:08In 1549, he landed in Japan,
03:12becoming the first missionary to set foot on this archipelago.
03:15He adapts subtly to Japanese culture,
03:19dress in a more dignified manner.

03:28His influence left a profound mark
03:30The beginnings of Christianity in Japan.
