Sanctus - Saint(e) du Jour
Suivre

Today, November 22nd, we celebrate Saint Cecilia, as well as the names Cecilia, Celine, Celia, Charonne, Chela and Shirley.
00:12
Saint Cecilia, a young Roman noblewoman of the 2nd century, secretly dedicated her life to God.
00:20
is married against her will, miraculously converts her husband and brother-in-law,
00:25
He resisted persecution, escaped a gruesome execution, and died a martyr after three days of agony, giving all his wealth to the poor.
00:39
She then became the patron saint of musicians, not for a musical achievement,
00:44
but because it is said that she sang inwardly to God at a time when all around her was nothing but noise, celebration and uproar.
00:54
His name has endured through the centuries, his image has become one of the most powerful symbols of Christianity.
01:02
its sanctuary, one of the most moving in Rome, Saint Cecilia in Trastevere.
01:10
Cecile was born into a large Roman family, in a world where Christians lived in hiding.
01:17
At a very young age, she decided to dedicate herself entirely to Christ.
01:21
It's a radical, dangerous choice, but she doesn't waver.
01:27
His family and friends, however, know nothing about it.
01:30
Her parents married her to a young patrician, Valerian.
01:34
On their wedding night, as the town celebrates the union and instruments resonate in the house,
01:40
Cécile reveals to Valérien that she has taken a vow of virginity and that an angel protects her.
01:49
Against all expectations, Valerian does not make fun of her.
01:53
He is overwhelmed by the strength of his faith.
01:56
Cécile told him, "If you want to see the angel, go and meet Pope Urban, who is hiding in the catacombs."
02:05
Valerian is going there.
02:07
He receives baptism.
02:09
And on his way back, he sees the angel.
02:12
A luminous apparition that crowns Cécile with celestial flowers.
02:17
This vision changes everything.
02:21
Valerian converted, killing his brother Tiburce.
02:26
But Rome does not tolerate conversions.
02:29
The two brothers were arrested and executed.
02:33
Cécile, far from hiding, began to proclaim the gospel with even more boldness.
02:41
His home became a refuge, a place of charity, a home of prayer.
02:46
She distributes her wealth, protects believers, and buries martyrs.
02:53
The authorities eventually arrested him.
02:56
She is condemned to die by suffocation, locked in a white-hot room.
03:03
Flames, steam, infernal heat, nothing works.
03:09
She survives.
03:11
So we send in an executioner.
03:13
He raised his sword three times.
03:17
He wounds her, but fails to kill her, as if something were holding his arm back.
03:24
Cécile remained lying there, half-alive, for three days.
03:30
For three days she still speaks, comforting the faithful who have come to see her.
03:36
where she confides her last wishes to them.
03:40
She gives everything she owns.
03:43
She requests that her house become a place of prayer.
03:47
She passed on her faith until her last breath.
03:52
Shortly after his death, this house became one of the first domestic churches in Rome.
03:58
then a basilica known throughout the world.
04:01
And that's where a detail becomes legend.
04:06
In the midst of the tumult, Cécile sang inwardly to God.
04:12
A simple image, but one that will endure for twenty centuries.
04:17
The young woman who sings amidst the noise,
04:20
who prays amidst violence,
04:23
who keeps his faith like an inner music
04:26
that nothing can stifle.
04:29
This is how she became the patron saint of musicians
04:32
and one of the most represented saints in the history of art.
04:38
Prayer to Saint Cecilia
04:40
Saint Cecilia, faithful virgin and courageous martyr,
04:46
who had preferred to suffer death
04:48
rather than denying your faith,
04:51
Grant us the strength to remain steadfast in the face of adversity.
04:54
You who sang to God in your heart
04:58
while the world saw only an earthly banquet,
05:02
Let us know, too,
05:05
Praise the Lord in all circumstances.
05:09
Protect the musicians, the choir members
05:11
and those who seek beauty.
05:15
Saint Cecilia, pray for us.
05:24
Saint Cecilia, pray for us.
