00:00Today, November 22nd, we celebrate Saint Cecilia, as well as the names Cecilia, Celine, Celia, Charonne, Chela and Shirley.

00:12Saint Cecilia, a young Roman noblewoman of the 2nd century, secretly dedicated her life to God.

00:20is married against her will, miraculously converts her husband and brother-in-law,

00:25He resisted persecution, escaped a gruesome execution, and died a martyr after three days of agony, giving all his wealth to the poor.

00:39She then became the patron saint of musicians, not for a musical achievement,

00:44but because it is said that she sang inwardly to God at a time when all around her was nothing but noise, celebration and uproar.

00:54His name has endured through the centuries, his image has become one of the most powerful symbols of Christianity.

01:02its sanctuary, one of the most moving in Rome, Saint Cecilia in Trastevere.

01:10Cecile was born into a large Roman family, in a world where Christians lived in hiding.

01:17At a very young age, she decided to dedicate herself entirely to Christ.

01:21It's a radical, dangerous choice, but she doesn't waver.

01:27His family and friends, however, know nothing about it.

01:30Her parents married her to a young patrician, Valerian.

01:34On their wedding night, as the town celebrates the union and instruments resonate in the house,

01:40Cécile reveals to Valérien that she has taken a vow of virginity and that an angel protects her.

01:49Against all expectations, Valerian does not make fun of her.

01:53He is overwhelmed by the strength of his faith.

01:56Cécile told him, "If you want to see the angel, go and meet Pope Urban, who is hiding in the catacombs."

02:05Valerian is going there.

02:07He receives baptism.

02:09And on his way back, he sees the angel.

02:12A luminous apparition that crowns Cécile with celestial flowers.

02:17This vision changes everything.

02:21Valerian converted, killing his brother Tiburce.

02:26But Rome does not tolerate conversions.

02:29The two brothers were arrested and executed.

02:33Cécile, far from hiding, began to proclaim the gospel with even more boldness.

02:41His home became a refuge, a place of charity, a home of prayer.

02:46She distributes her wealth, protects believers, and buries martyrs.

02:53The authorities eventually arrested him.

02:56She is condemned to die by suffocation, locked in a white-hot room.

03:03Flames, steam, infernal heat, nothing works.

03:09She survives.

03:11So we send in an executioner.

03:13He raised his sword three times.

03:17He wounds her, but fails to kill her, as if something were holding his arm back.

03:24Cécile remained lying there, half-alive, for three days.

03:30For three days she still speaks, comforting the faithful who have come to see her.

03:36where she confides her last wishes to them.

03:40She gives everything she owns.

03:43She requests that her house become a place of prayer.

03:47She passed on her faith until her last breath.

03:52Shortly after his death, this house became one of the first domestic churches in Rome.

03:58then a basilica known throughout the world.

04:01And that's where a detail becomes legend.

04:06In the midst of the tumult, Cécile sang inwardly to God.

04:12A simple image, but one that will endure for twenty centuries.

04:17The young woman who sings amidst the noise,

04:20who prays amidst violence,

04:23who keeps his faith like an inner music

04:26that nothing can stifle.

04:29This is how she became the patron saint of musicians

04:32and one of the most represented saints in the history of art.

04:40Saint Cecilia, faithful virgin and courageous martyr,

04:46who had preferred to suffer death

04:48rather than denying your faith,

04:51Grant us the strength to remain steadfast in the face of adversity.

04:54You who sang to God in your heart

04:58while the world saw only an earthly banquet,

05:02Let us know, too,

05:05Praise the Lord in all circumstances.

05:11and those who seek beauty.
