00:01On this 1st of December, the Church celebrates Saint Charles de Foucauld, one of the most transformative spiritual figures of the 20th century.
00:08A man who went from excess to holiness, from worldliness to the desert, from emptiness to the total fullness of God.
00:17With him, we also celebrate the names Charles, Charlene, Charlotte, Carla.
00:21But it is Charles de Foucault who dominates this day through the power of his testimony, his life offered and his universal fraternity.
00:32Today, we enter the story of a man who was never destined to become a saint.
00:37and yet it has become an inexhaustible source of inspiration for all of humanity.
00:43Charles de Foucault was born in 1858 in Strasbourg into a noble family.
00:47Childhood looks promising, but tragedy strikes very early.
00:53He lost both his parents at only six years old.
00:56This inner wound will never completely leave him.
01:00Raised by his grandfather, he found material comfort, but not peace of mind.
01:06A brilliant but tormented teenager, he gradually loses his faith.
01:10Young Charles, intelligent, sensitive but unstable, sinks into an existence where sensations are sought rather than meaning.
01:21His temperament led him to the army, where he shone with his courage, but failed due to indiscipline.
01:28He prefers parties, adventures, and leisure to military discipline.
01:33His reputation as a dissolute young nobleman follows him everywhere.
01:38When his regiment was sent to Algeria, he discovered the desert for the first time.
01:44without yet understanding that it would become his place of sanctification.
01:49Having returned to civilian life, Charles embarked on an exploration of Morocco, which was forbidden to Europeans.
01:55He disguises himself, takes insane risks and publishes a remarkable geographical work that makes him a recognized scholar.
02:06But despite the honors, despite the successes, he remains inwardly empty, arid, as desert-like as the lands he crosses.
02:16However, a first spiritual shock occurs.
02:20Upon observing the faith of Muslims, he is struck.
02:22He, who no longer believes in anything, says to himself, "Perhaps God exists, since these men live for him."
02:31But it's still resisting.
02:34In 1886, everything changed.
02:37In Paris, he meets Abbé Huvelin, a humble but passionate priest,
02:43who told him bluntly, "Get on your knees and confess."
02:49Charles obeyed, almost against his will, and then grace pierced him.
02:56Versailles, the festivities, the pride, the riches, everything collapses.
03:01Charles is reborn into a life he thought was impossible.
03:06He will find God again and never let Him go.
03:09He wrote, "As soon as I believed that there was a God,
03:12I understood that I couldn't do anything other than live for him.
03:18After years of spiritual searching,
03:20He became a Trappist monk, then a hermit in the Holy Land.
03:25But he feels that God is asking even more of him.
03:28A life similar to that of Jesus in Nazareth.
03:32A simple, hidden, silent life, entirely given.
03:37In 1901, he settled in the Algerian Sahara,
03:43in Béniabès, then in Tamanrasset.
03:47There, he lives among the Tuareg people.
03:50shares his sorrows, his illnesses, his celebrations, his culture.
03:55He learns their language, he cares for them.
03:59He wrote them a monumental dictionary.
04:01He becomes a universal brother.
04:05a loving, simple, welcoming presence.
04:09Far from prestigious churches,
04:12away from the crowds,
04:13far from any recognition,
04:16Charles shines with a light that no one can extinguish.
04:20the light of charity.
04:22He wants to be everyone's brother.
04:25the silent reviver of a wounded world.
04:28He does not seek to convert through speeches.
04:32but through presence.
04:34"I want to proclaim the gospel with my whole life,"
04:37he wrote.
04:39December 1, 1916,
04:42He is murdered during a hostage situation that escalates.
04:46He died alone, without disciples.
04:49without a visible work,
04:51From a human perspective, a failure.
04:53And yet, a few years later,
04:57His message inspires entire communities.
05:01Today, the Foucauldian fraternities,
05:04the little sisters of Jesus
05:05and thousands of laypeople follow his intuition.
05:09To live Jesus in the simplicity of everyday life.
05:12in brotherhood and loving presence.
05:15His canonization in 2022 confirmed what the world already knew.
05:22His existence illuminated the earth.
05:26Prayer of Charles de Foucauld
05:28Prayer of abandonment
05:30My Father, I abandon myself to you.
05:34Do with me as you please.
05:37Whatever you do with me, I thank you.
05:40I am ready for anything, I accept anything.
05:44provided that your will be done in me
05:46and in all your creatures.
05:49I desire nothing else, my God.
05:52Into your hands, I place my soul.
05:55I give it to you with all the love in my heart,
05:58Because I love you.
06:01Amen.
