00:01On this December 5th, we celebrate Gérald, but also Géraud, Girard and Gérolf,
00:07first names that originate from medieval tradition.
00:11The most famous of them is the one the Church honors today.
00:14is Saint Gerald of Sauve-Majeur, an 11th-century abbot
00:18whose life left a lasting mark on monastic spirituality.
00:23Saint Gerald was born in 1025 into a noble family in Gascony.
00:28From a very young age, he received a refined education, steeped in faith.
00:32but also marked by the expectations of a lineage devoted to arms.
00:36However, contrary to the ambitions of those around him,
00:40Gerald feels no attraction to military glory.
00:44His heart yearns for another form of combat.
00:47that of humility, peace, and silent prayer.
00:53From adolescence onwards, he displayed a natural gentleness,
00:57and a donation for mediation,
00:59which impresses even the adults around him.
01:03At 20, he took the plunge and entered the Abbey of Saint-Sever.
01:07This choice marks a radical break with the world.
01:12The young man accepts the simplest tasks,
01:14learns to be silent, to serve, and to pray.
01:19The monks are struck by his ability to remain peaceful,
01:22even in moments of fatigue or contradiction.
01:27This inner stability would become one of his spiritual hallmarks.
01:32It is said that he always advanced with an even step,
01:35Never in a hurry, but never slow either.
01:38like someone who lets God guide their every move.
01:42Over time, Gerald was noticed by his superiors.
01:45Not only did he live by the rule faithfully,
01:49But he possesses a wisdom that is rare for his age.
01:53The Church was going through a difficult period at that time.
01:56marked by tensions,
01:58necessary relaxations and reforms.
02:01We are looking for men capable of leading without crushing.
02:05to correct without hurting.
02:07Gerald is one of them.
02:10He is then entrusted with a new mission.
02:13to found an abbey in a still wild forest,
02:16an isolated place where a more demanding monastic life could be reborn.
02:22This place would become one of the great spiritual achievements of the Middle Ages,
02:27major safeguard.
02:29The forest in which he settles is dense, harsh, and full of challenges.
02:33There is nothing there except a few huts and clearings.
02:39Gerald begins by building a small wooden church.
02:43Then he organizes their communal life.
02:45imposes a demanding rhythm of prayer,
02:48but always imbued with kindness.
02:51The brothers are flocking in.
02:53There is talk of a major rescue operation soon throughout the southwest.
02:57Some come to be educated,
02:59others to convert,
03:01still others to withdraw from the world.
03:05Gerald welcomes everyone with the same simplicity.
03:09His words are measured.
03:11But when he speaks, everyone listens.
03:14It is said that the pilgrims left transformed.
03:16simply after meeting his gaze
03:19or received his blessing.
03:22His influence reached as far as Rome.
03:25Pope Alexander II entrusted him
03:27several delicate missions of monastic reform.
03:30Gerald never travels in search of honor.
03:34but to restore peace.
03:37Her gentleness, far from being a weakness,
03:39becomes a formidable force.
03:42Where others impose through severity,
03:45He converted him through kindness.
03:47But holiness does not prevent hardship.
03:52In the last years of his life,
03:54Gerald is struck by progressive paralysis.
03:57He loses the use of his legs,
03:59then struggles to stand.
04:02Yet, he doesn't complain.
04:05He continues to run his abbey from his bed.
04:07The brothers testify that his face
04:11seemed even brighter than before,
04:14as if his physical weakness
04:15opened a more direct path to God.
04:19He remains a spiritual guide for everyone.
04:22encouraging, advising, calming.
04:26He died in 1095.
04:28surrounded by his monks,
04:30in an atmosphere of profound peace.
04:32Very quickly, miracles were reported at his tomb.
04:37Sauve-majeur becomes a center of pilgrimage.
04:41Three years after his death,
04:43The Church recognizes his sanctity.
04:46Even today,
04:47the majestic ruins of the abbey,
04:50listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site,
04:52bear witness to his vision and legacy.
04:56Prayer to Saint Gerald
04:58Lord Jesus,
05:00You who guided Saint Gerald
05:02on the path to humility,
05:04patience and inner peace,
05:08grants to those who invoke him
05:09to find in turn
05:11Light in times of trial.
05:15Give us a gentle, faithful, and trusting heart.
05:19that through his intercession,
05:20so that we may build peace around us
05:23and walk each day towards your presence.
05:27Amen.
