00:00Today, December 1st, the French church and almanac celebrate Saint Eligius, one of the most popular saints of the Middle Ages.
00:08We also celebrate the names Florence, Nahome and Candide, but it is Eloi who remains the best known figure.
00:15the protector of craftsmen, mechanics and all those who work with metal.
00:21Eloi was born around 588 in Chaptelas, near Limoges.
00:26From a very early age, he showed exceptional talent for metalwork.
00:31Sent to apprentice to the goldsmith Abon, he became so skilled that he was noticed by the royal court.
00:38One day, King Clotaire II asked him to create a throne out of solid gold.
00:43Eloi, honest and ingenious, manages to make two thrones with the amount of gold intended for only one.
00:51Impressed by his integrity, the king made him his master goldsmith, then his advisor.
00:58At court, Eloi lived simply, distributed his income to the poor, and freed many slaves.
01:05His reputation for holiness grew, not only for his talents, but also for his immense heart.
01:12He repairs roads, frees prisoners, founds monasteries and provides aid to the most vulnerable.
01:19Ordained a priest, then appointed bishop of Noyon, he tirelessly travelled through the villages of northern Gaul to evangelize the still pagan populations.
01:30Eloi preaches by example, visits the sick, rebuilds churches and teaches craftsmen to work honestly, with patience and rigor.
01:40His presence brings peace, justice and unity in a troubled time.
01:47He died on December 1, 660, after requesting that everything he owned be given to the poor.
01:55His tomb immediately became a major place of pilgrimage.
01:59For centuries, metalworkers, farriers, blacksmiths, mechanics, and even horsemen have invoked Saint Eligius as their patron and protector, a symbol of work done with integrity, precision, and generosity.
02:17Prayer to Saint Eloi
02:20Saint Eloi, you whose hands were righteous and whose heart was faithful, teach us to work with honesty, courage, and patience.
02:30Protects all those who handle tools, who repair, who build and who transform matter.
02:37Inspire us with the wisdom, righteousness, and generosity that dwelt within you.
02:44Grant us peace of heart and the joy of serving.
02:48Saint Eligius prays for us.
02:50Amen.
