00:01Today, December 4th, we celebrate Saint Barbara, one of the most popular and impressive saints in the entire Christian tradition.
00:10Today we also celebrate the names Barbara and Barbara, which are still common in several regions of the world.
00:16But the dominant figure, the one who has united believers for centuries, is undoubtedly Saint Barbara.
00:22protective against fire, lightning, explosions, sudden death and all violent dangers that threaten human life.
00:31His life tells the story of an immense struggle, absolute fidelity to Christ, and heroic courage in the face of his own father's brutality.
00:40Saint Barbara was supposedly born in the 3rd century in a region of Asia Minor then under Roman rule, into a pagan noble family.
00:48His father, Dioscor, was a man renowned for his inflexible authority, harsh temper, and obsession with his own reputation.
00:59Seeing that his daughter's beauty was attracting attention, he decided to lock her in a tower to keep her away from the world.
01:06This gilded cage, intended to preserve family honor, became the place where Barbe developed a sharp mind.
01:14a profound intelligence and a mind curious about everything related to the meaning of life.
01:21In this isolation, Barbe hears about Christ, either from authorized visitors or from Christians who discreetly travel to the region.
01:31The message of the Gospel, based on love, inner freedom and the light that never goes out, touches his heart in a dazzling way.
01:40She decides to receive baptism in secret, without telling anyone, not even her father's servants.
01:48In a world where Christianity was still persecuted, this gesture had the value of a total and definitive commitment.
01:56From that moment on, Barbe wished to bear witness to her faith.
02:00When her father had the tower renovated, she asked the workers to put in three windows instead of two, in honor of the Holy Trinity.
02:10This seemingly insignificant detail becomes the key that reveals his conversion.
02:16Upon discovering the third window, Dioscor flies into an uncontrollable rage.
02:21He immediately understands that his daughter has joined the religion he deeply despises.
02:29Barbe tries to explain her faith to him, but nothing can appease her father's anger.
02:34On the contrary, he strikes her, threatens her, and seeks to force her to deny Christ.
02:41But she did not waver.
02:43Barbe manages to escape and takes refuge in the mountains.
02:47Ancient stories say that a rock miraculously opened to protect her from the soldiers who were pursuing her.
02:55But she is eventually captured, forcibly brought back and handed over to the governor.
03:01Then began a series of tortures among the most violent described in the accounts of the martyrs.
03:07They tear it apart, they burn it, they publicly humiliate it, they drag it through the streets.
03:12Yet, she retains a supernatural dignity.
03:18The texts claim that his wounds miraculously healed at night.
03:22as if divine light refused to let evil triumph.
03:26The cruelty reaches its peak when Dioscor demands to be the executioner of his own daughter.
03:34In a tragic, almost unbearable gesture, he decapitates her with his own hands.
03:40But divine justice is not long in coming.
03:43He had barely left the place of execution when a bolt of lightning struck him mortally.
03:51This scene will forever mark the Christian imagination.
03:54reminding us that holiness cannot be destroyed by human hatred.
03:59After her death, Saint Barbara became a figure of protection in countless dangerous professions.
04:05Firefighters, miners, artillerymen, sailors, construction workers, pyrotechnicians,
04:13They all treat her like their boss.
04:16His courage in the face of fire and violence makes him a symbol of resistance and indestructible faith.
04:24In medieval Europe, she was one of the most venerated saints.
04:28His cult spans both East and West.
04:31Even today, in fire stations around the world,
04:36His image watches over those who risk their lives to save the lives of others.
04:42Prayer to Saint Barbara
04:43Saint Barbara, you who faced violence, threats, and death,
04:49without ever denying the light of Christ,
04:52protect us when we are exposed to danger.
04:55Watch over those who provide assistance.
04:58those who work in flames, underground, at heights or in the midst of storms.
05:05Give us the strength, courage, and inner clarity to move forward without fear.
05:11Keep catastrophes, lightning, fires, and sudden deaths away from us.
05:17Grant peace, security, and trust to everyone.
05:21Saint Barbara, accompany our steps and protect our lives.
05:27Amen.
