00:00Today, November 29th, we celebrate Saturnin, but also similar names like Cernin, Sarnin and, in some regions, Ninin.
00:10Among them, Saint Saturnin is by far the most famous.
00:14First bishop of Toulouse, martyr of the early centuries, immense figure of evangelization in Gaul.
00:21Saint Saturnin, also known as Cernin in Occitan, is one of the oldest saints honored in France.
00:27He is the first known bishop of Toulouse, a pioneer, a solitary missionary sent to the heart of a still pagan world.
00:36His story is marked by determination, unwavering faith, and a martyrdom that became one of the most famous of early Christianity.
00:46His life takes place in the 3rd century, at a time when proclaiming Christ meant accepting persecution, rejection, and sometimes death.
00:55Saturnin experienced this in the most spectacular way possible.
01:01Saturnin arrives in Gaul sent, according to tradition, by Pope Fabian.
01:06In Toulouse, he discovered a city dominated by the imperial cult and the veneration of numerous pagan gods.
01:14Alone, without political support, he begins his work.
01:18He preaches in the streets, converts entire families, baptizes, and trains new disciples.
01:26His preaching did not go unnoticed.
01:29The pagan religious authorities are worried about this Christian who is gradually turning the people away from their ancient gods.
01:36Despite the tensions, Saturnin refuses to give up.
01:40His courage is impressive.
01:42He knows he is being watched, threatened, monitored, but he continues.
01:48The first Christian communities in Toulouse were born thanks to him and his direct, simple, fiery words.
01:56One day, while he was on his way to a pagan sacrifice on the Capitole in Toulouse,
02:01Saturnin passes near the temple.
02:04The priests see him and call out to him.
02:07They reproach him for the silence of the oracles, convinced that the presence of the Christian prevents their divinity from expressing itself.
02:15They demand that they participate in the sacrifice, that they prostrate themselves before the idol.
02:22Saturnin categorically refuses.
02:24Then, in an indescribable fury, the priests decided to punish him.
02:30They tie the saint by the feet to a young bull destined for sacrifice.
02:35The panicked animal ran through the streets of Toulouse, dragging the saint's body behind it.
02:43Saturnin stumbles on the steps, the stones, the paving stones.
02:47His body is torn apart, but his faith does not waver.
02:51The bull finished its run at the bottom of the Capitol building.
02:54The saint's body, unrecognizable, was left there.
02:57Two young Christian women, pious and discreet, dare to defy the ban.
03:04They come to collect the body, wash it, and bury it respectfully.
03:09Later, a basilica would be built over this tomb.
03:13The famous Saint-Sernin Basilica in Toulouse, still today one of the most beautiful Romanesque sanctuaries in Europe.
03:22The cult of Saint Saturninus spread rapidly throughout Gaul.
03:27Pilgrims are flocking to Toulouse.
03:29Miracles attributed to his intercession are multiplying.
03:33He became a model of missionary courage for generations of bishops and priests.
03:39Even today, his basilica attracts worshippers, tourists, historians and architecture lovers.
03:47He remains a symbol, that of a man ready to lose everything rather than renounce his faith.
03:54Prayer to Saint Saturnin
03:55Saint Saturninus, courageous martyr of Christ,
04:00You who have not feared the violence of men,
04:02Grant us the strength to remain faithful in times of trial.
04:05Protect our families, keep our steps
04:09And make us joyful witnesses of the Gospel.
04:13Saint Saturnin prays for us.
04:16Amen
