Post-match press conference with Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola after their 3-0 win over Sunderland at the Etihad Stadium in the Premier League.
Ruben Dias, Josko Gvardiol and Phil Foden scored as City closed the gap on leaders Arsenal, with Rayan Cherki starring again in the final third.
Guardiola says this was “maybe one of the best performances of the season”, stressing that his experience of winning the Premier League tells him everything comes down to consistency and the way the team plays, not the table in December. He explains how City learned from the chaotic 5-4 win at Fulham, praising a complete performance over 90 minutes against a dangerous Sunderland side and warning that they must keep winning “games and games” to stay in the title race.
He hails Cherki as an exceptional talent with huge personality, highlighting his simplicity on the ball and revealing how he learned from Lionel Messi that top players never make mistakes with the simple things. Guardiola talks about mentality and character as the key qualities in recruitment, insisting that without players who demand the ball in the toughest moments “no tactics exist, nothing”. He also discusses Savio’s impact off the bench, his pressing and recovery runs after criticism at Fulham, and reflects on the late red card challenge on Matheus Nunes, admitting City were “lucky” the midfielder’s leg was not planted on the turf.
