Post-match press conference with Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola after their 3-0 win over Sunderland at the Etihad Stadium in the Premier League.

Ruben Dias, Josko Gvardiol and Phil Foden scored as City closed the gap on leaders Arsenal, with Rayan Cherki starring again in the final third.

Guardiola says this was “maybe one of the best performances of the season”, stressing that his experience of winning the Premier League tells him everything comes down to consistency and the way the team plays, not the table in December. He explains how City learned from the chaotic 5-4 win at Fulham, praising a complete performance over 90 minutes against a dangerous Sunderland side and warning that they must keep winning “games and games” to stay in the title race.

He hails Cherki as an exceptional talent with huge personality, highlighting his simplicity on the ball and revealing how he learned from Lionel Messi that top players never make mistakes with the simple things. Guardiola talks about mentality and character as the key qualities in recruitment, insisting that without players who demand the ball in the toughest moments “no tactics exist, nothing”. He also discusses Savio’s impact off the bench, his pressing and recovery runs after criticism at Fulham, and reflects on the late red card challenge on Matheus Nunes, admitting City were “lucky” the midfielder’s leg was not planted on the turf.

00:00Good evening everyone, I hope you're well. We'll take a share of answers for questions
00:14please and we'll set an embargo towards the end for 10.30pm on Sunday evening. Somewhere
00:19to start please? Start with Sham. Thank you.
00:22I bet you needed to win to close the gap on Arsenal and you've done just that, you needed
00:31to stay in touch and you are doing it come the end of this year.
00:37Yeah, we can talk, of course it's better to be closer and closer than the top of the
00:42league but from my experience, I'm sorry, I don't want to feel arrogant but I have quite
00:47experienced to win the Premier League or the titles, it's the consistency. And the consistency
00:52comes just for one thing, for the way you play. Not for the result one day or victory two
00:57points behind or four points in front, it's the consistency to be how you perform, how
01:01much you grow during the year. And today has been maybe one of the best performers of the
01:05year, the season, during 95-94 minutes. We have a good momentum, but our second half starts
01:12from both, we talk about that. The first half was really good, the second half we suffer.
01:17We are not consistent in 90 minutes and we talk about the reason why. And because we
01:23did really good things against the first half and we stopped to do it in the second half.
01:27And they see it, we talk about that, it's not about specific movement defensively or offensively.
01:34And today, during 90 minutes and the team, it's not necessary to say what they have done
01:38so far against top teams. The results, we concede one chance, we give away again. But apart
01:45of that, of course, the first half in general, it was a good performance. And of course, you
01:53know, the Premier League had the feeling that even today they drop points, Arsenal is going
01:58to drop few, few, few, few points. You want to be there, you have to win games, games and
02:02games come from the way you perform, not just for a lucky day or a lucky action.
02:10Ryan Cherky created more chances than any player on the pitch. Incredible assist as well. Was that
02:17his best game in a City share so far?
02:19Ryan is an exceptional player, so young. I have a huge personality proving against Fulham
02:26him in the toughest moment, 5-4 or 3-5-4, come there. And every time he had the ball, give
02:31us extra passes and continuity. It's not scary. Having self-confidence to him in the final
02:37third have something special. Especially Craig, what I admire the most on Ryan is not the skills.
02:44I never saw Messi play, make a cross like I've done. Messi is the best player play that game.
02:50And I never saw this kind of crosses. The crosses is fine, it's fine. It doesn't matter. Right, left,
02:55with a part of your feet, with a head, it doesn't matter. If it's effective, it's fine. But I like the
03:02simplicity because I learned from Messi that they never make a mistake, they never make a mistake with
03:07the simple things. Never. Simple things he does perfectly. And after dribble, 4-5. And what I want to
03:14the players, the simplest things do it well. And after that, if you do this, listen, you play,
03:19you have a special talent, the mum and dad gave it to you, and he can do whatever you want.
03:23But if it doesn't work, now we'll be in problem. So now we'll be in trouble.
03:28Hi, Pep. Is the key to you being successful this season, the mentality of the players,
03:32the approach, being brave, sort of on the front foot?
03:38Yeah, I think also always they had, except last season for obvious reasons that everybody knows it.
03:44We don't have players, but important is when happening in the beginning of the season,
03:49the first five games, six games, ten games, it's not going well, something, it's not a problem.
03:53As much as they follow me, or they follow us, the staff, and telling guys, the reason why is that.
03:59If we improve that, we'll be a better team. And next win, a better team. And after that,
04:04we are in a good path. When they don't follow us and say, no, that is not the reason why. And after
04:08that, we will be in trouble. And that is the point. I want to see the team growing.
04:16You know, as a, as a, because I said, so in local stage, in one game, in Champions League,
04:22in FA Cup, one game, you play, but it doesn't matter. But in the Premier League, it's a long,
04:25three fixtures has to be, has to be the performance. The performance dictates,
04:32dictates if you will be there or not. The rest, you can, I'm honest enough, when we win a game,
04:38it helped me a lot. 5-4 against Fulham, 4-5, oh, it's top, we won three points. I said,
04:42if we continue to do what happens in the second half, we'll stop to do it in the first.
04:48No chance. We'll lose everywhere. Because that league, you know, you can beat three,
04:57four, five, six games in a row and you don't win a game. It happened to us last season. So,
05:02it happened for many teams this season. So, that's why the way you play will be the key for the future.
05:08Hi, Pep. What did you think of the challenge on Mateus at the end of the game for the red card?
05:13And how is Mateus?
05:14Listen, it's fine. It was lucky that it was not the leg on the grass. It was in, in the moment, it was on top.
05:24To be honest, I thought that was like the first action with Josco in the first half.
05:29That's the dive scene in the TV. It's wow. We're lucky that it's good.
05:34Pep, you talked about Cherki having a personality. How important is it that when you come to recruit
05:42players that they do have that kind of personality?
05:44It's the key. It's the key. The skills, the blind guy realise. If you go to the biggest stages away,
05:52or we're really under pressure, it's like a friendly game for them. That is important.
05:59Players have to be in the important teams. To discover that is so difficult. Because you always see the
06:05teams, the players in the skills, you know, actions, the player. But you don't know how he behaves in Anfield and
06:12Old Trafford, Arsenal away, or 79 minutes. We need to step up and do it. Friendly games, everybody do it. With 3-0, everybody.
06:25No, no. The question is, in the toughest moments, he said, I'm going to win the game. I'm going to perform.
06:31When you have a lot of these ones, and I had a lot of these ones in my career as a manager,
06:37until you can have success. Without that, no tactics exist. Nothing.
06:46How impressed have you been with Ryan
06:49Cherky understanding what he needs to do in the sort of final third with you? Because it's not always...
06:54Attacking players sometimes find it difficult to know when to play.
06:58No, I like... I will like to tell them, move in that spaces, but after we have the ball,
07:06and not do whatever you want. You know, before the cross have done, I don't make a pause. I said,
07:13now Ryan put the ball to the right leg behind the left and cross. So they have to play.
07:20We tell them for the way the defense, the opponent attack or defense, what they have to do to do together.
07:25So Ryan has played always in his career. I have been, I'm pretty sure, I didn't know about 12,
07:3013, 14, 15 years old, better than all his mates. By far. And I have the feeling he has done whatever
07:36he wants. He has to do what he has to do for the team. And when he's able to do it, he will play a
07:43lot of minutes during many, many years in this club, because he's a special quality. But he has to do it. Otherwise...
07:49Have you sort of seen an improvement in, in that side of his game in recent, in recent weeks? Maybe
07:56since he come back from Madrid? Maybe he has realized when he hasn't played much, you know,
08:00in the bench, maybe he has to realize, and that it's so important to, to do it. Today was an action
08:07in Fulham that Savio went, lose the ball, in the final, the action for the cross, in the second post,
08:14and Erling go, you know, he had to go to the post, continue, and he's a run back. He was there. And I told
08:23him, so today lost one or two balls, in two seconds was a football. Savio is going to play a lot of minutes.
08:29Without that, they know it, the secret of the team. And after the quality of Savio, the quality of Ryan,
08:35the quality of Dodd is, I don't care. But they will do the things that make the team stable, and try it, and try it.
08:41And try another run all the time, and Phil run all the time, and Jeremy's improving a lot. And, you know,
08:47that is the key. Today, I was incredible pleased for the 50-20 minutes from Savio. Incredible.
08:55Two actions, lose the ball, was a machine. He doesn't like to listen, but I have to tell them.
09:00Because what happened in that, you make an incredible cross, it was a 5-2,
09:06or 6-2 or 6-3 in that moment. No, you lose the ball and you're walking, you come from the bench,
09:10you have to run double, because the other guys are tired. And today has done it three times,
09:14three times. Like a machine, make a fault and go there. Savio is going to play a lot of minutes.
09:20He's going to play with us. We'll set the embargo left at 10.30pm on Sunday evening. Go to Rob, please.
