Post-match press conference with Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta after their 2-1 defeat at Villa Park in the Premier League.

Matty Cash opened the scoring for Aston Villa in the 36th minute before Leandro Trossard equalised early in the second half. Emiliano Buendía then struck a dramatic 95th minute winner to seal the victory and end Arsenal’s 18 game unbeaten run.

Arteta said Arsenal were “extremely disappointed” and admitted Villa were “really good at what they do”. He criticised the unusual giveaways that led to danger in the first half, spoke about missed chances in the second half and highlighted the late opportunity Arsenal failed to convert moments before Buendía’s winner. He discussed the physical demands of the schedule, injuries in defence and insisted the team must learn from the defeat and bounce back quickly.

00:00Hi guys. Raise your hands and we'll come to you. Who wants to kick off? Go Martin from the Sun.
00:15I guess you might be quite frustrated if I hadn't worked so hard to get back in the game to lose it
00:22with the very last kick but you seem to make a bit of a change as well with taking Prostad off.
00:27Was that tactical as well or more about his fitness?
00:31Obviously, we were extremely disappointed in the way we lost the game but first of all,
00:37congratulate Villa because they are a really good side and they are really good at what they do.
00:42We had some difficulties in the first half, especially with very unusual giveaways that
00:47we have given after regaining the ball, which is a really dangerous moment against them.
00:52But apart from the Watkins situation, which is a foul, I don't recall anything apart from
00:56the goal. In the second half we started really well, much more positive, we generated chances
01:01to score the goal and my feeling was that we were going to go and win the game. We could
01:06have lost it before, again, with two very dangerous individual giveaways and we didn't. We had
01:13two chances to score. The last one went across Declan and we didn't capitalise on that. The
01:17next goal kick long goes there, second ball, we put it away for a throw-in. They play fast,
01:22a lot of chaos in the box and they managed to put the ball in the top corner, which is the quality
01:27of this league. So that's the summary.
01:30And how much of a blow is that for you? You've dropped now, I think it's a seven-point-seeking
01:36high game despite playing Fitchie Wellington in a lot of those. It could have been well cleared and
01:41it's a much tighter base.
01:43But that's the league. I mean, you go to Old Trafford, you go to St James' Park, you go to Chelsea,
01:48you come here. We've been in a lot of difficult grounds and today the result could have been
01:55different. The reality is not. And that's the step that we have to make. I mean, we've been 18
02:00games and beating and still we are there, very close to each other. And that's the level of the league.
02:05And we know that. That's the opportunity that we had ahead of us. And that's it. Now it's time to
02:10bounce back. They have given me all the right reasons to think that we're going to continue to
02:15perform at the same level because what the boys tried to do today again with the schedule that
02:19we had, it was amazing. So, move on. James, CBS?
02:23Michael, you mentioned the schedule there. Do you think it's all just become a bit too draining
02:29for you guys in the last ten minutes? Spurs, Chelsea, Bayern, it was all just too much of them?
02:34I don't know. At some point I thought we were going to win it and there were moments that we gave
02:39very strange giveaways that have nothing to do with us. But it's football as well. But the boys
02:46are willing to put absolutely everything. They tried. The situation with Leo is the same. He could
02:51only play a certain amount of minutes. We made the decision to do it early and we had to do it after.
02:56Do it after. That was the reason why we had to change him and learn from it and go again.
03:00Tom, football on in here?
03:02How was your sixth different bag four overseas? Obviously, Chelsea and Vertu,
03:06really difficult way against you. Saliba or Gabriel through them. How big of an impact
03:10does that have on the expectations for it? It's what it is. I think we have to cope with that. We're
03:15going to have to cope with that for a period of time as well. We know that and the team has to be able to
03:21adapt that and look for excuses. Obviously, we know what those two bring, especially in games like this.
03:27But the other two, I think they were exceptional as well today. So, that's it.
03:32Is there a case here of when you go behind in a game, trying to get results out of the
03:38books against, I think, with Chelsea, City, where you've gone behind? Is there a need to try and
03:47make the most out of the games when you go behind? Sorry, sorry?
03:51Is there a need to make the most out of it when you go behind in a game?
03:55Well, we try and we've done it in many occasions. And today, I certainly had the feeling that we
03:59could do it. But the game was constantly at the edge because we gave two balls away as well,
04:04very dangerous. And in those open situations against man-to-man in the last line, they are
04:08really good attacking those channels. But yeah, we have to learn from it the way we conceded the
04:14first goal as well, very far from our standards. So, that's learning that we can take from ourselves.
04:20And then, give credit to the opponent as well, because I think they are a really good side.
04:24Hi, Mikel. I'm certainly very good. So, do you think they are in the title race still as well?
04:29Well, they are. When you look at where they are, the way they play, they have beaten some big
04:34teams, especially at home. So, yeah, everybody's going to have to play everybody. So, at the moment,
04:40they are where they are and we are there as well. Simon in the back here.
04:43He's going to be out for weeks. Unfortunately, it's much more than what we expected, so the player
04:56was feeling. So, he's going to be out for weeks.
04:59Yeah, well, I mean, everything that they have put in the last two weeks and the results that we got,
05:17the performances and to lose it that way emotionally, it's very touching. You just feel that, yeah,
05:24everything that you put, it hasn't been worth it. But it is worth it, because we will learn again
05:30from today and it will make us a better team again.
05:33And finally, James ESPN there.
05:34Well, it's been five months in the competition and so far, we've coped. We're going to have to prove that
05:49we can cope again, again, again for another six months. That's the level. If you think you're going
05:54to be in this moment with 10 points clear, I think we live in a different world.
05:59Okay, guys. Thanks very much.
