Post-match press conference with Tottenham manager Thomas Frank after their 2-0 win over Brentford at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the Premier League.

Richarlison opened the scoring from a Xavi Simons cross before Simons sealed the points with a brilliant solo goal, as Spurs earned a first home league win since the opening weekend and ended a poor run at home. Frank reflects on a vibrant attacking display with pace, tempo, penetration and unpredictability, plus the work on structure and connections in the front line and why this now has to be the standard.

He praises Simons for his goal and assist, the discipline of Archie Gray and the contribution of Djed Spence and Mohammed Kudus, while also explaining Destiny Udogie’s soft tissue injury against Newcastle and how Spurs prepared for the direct play and set pieces of Keith Andrews’ Brentford and striker Igor Thiago. He also hails the fantastic energy between Guglielmo Vicario and the home supporters after recent criticism.

00:00Hi there Thomas, was that just what you and the team needed, a kind of really vibrant
00:27attacking display? Yeah, I think so. Sometimes you work hard on things and sometimes it just
00:35suddenly click. I said before the team has been a little bit out of sync in some stages. Today a lot
00:44more players were on the same page at the same time throughout the game. I think we looked such
00:50a threat going forward. Great chances, played with pace, tempo, penetration, unpredictable,
00:59so I like that. It's everything we'd like to be, but also being aggressive in the pressure.
01:07And I still have that clean sheet mentality. We're giving four shots away, which is very good against
01:12a Brentford team we know is very difficult to handle when they play behind and their directness
01:17and their set pieces. So overall, just a complete performance. Could that be the breakthrough
01:24performance for Xavi as well for you? Yeah, definitely. I think every player
01:28needs that extra good performance. So happy for him. He's been working very hard. He's
01:36a top pro. He's so determined. He wanted so badly in every aspect of his game. And it's just,
01:44you know, a little bit of rotation. Also that the team a little bit out of sync. And now it was
01:50more also, for example, let's say, Kudos after a great start, a little dip because of the little
01:55injury. A lot more better today as Xavi's in a good place, Kool is in a better place, you know,
02:00Richie. So just everything just coming more and more together. So now we need to build on it.
02:04Just quick on no destiny today. What's his injury?
02:07He got a soft tissue injury, unfortunately, against Newcastle.
02:13Would it keep him out long?
02:15Not too long. Not too long, yeah.
02:17Thank you, Josh.
02:18How interesting to see, Thiago, a player that you signed yourself, but it's first, it could
02:26still very, very confident with them. So you must have found that by an interesting thing to see,
02:31because you obviously know him well out inside of the brand.
02:34Yeah, I think it's fair to say that I know all the players in Brentford World, except
02:38the two or three, they signed this summer. So there was, in many ways, very special to
02:43meet them. It was nice to see familiar faces. You always want to have more time before and
02:48after. There had to be, if it was not a draw, there had to be a loser. Then everyone is
02:52competitive. So it was very nice to see people. I see them there. Yeah, so, yeah.
03:00George.
03:01Hi, Thomas. Did you feel Xavi was kind of building up to that? And how kind of important can it
03:06be for him to get that first goal? Because a new signing always wants that first goal
03:10to kind of get that monkey off the bat?
03:11Exactly. I think every player need that extra bit of confidence. And that comes from his
03:17performance, the team's performance. And I think that assist and the goal, I think, gave
03:22him that extra bit of, how can I say, lightness in his step and his touches and everything.
03:29So, for him, it was also an all-around very good performance.
03:35And Archie Gray's performance won't sort of make headlines, but you put him in again
03:39and it felt like he was really good against Mikael Damsgaard. How kind of pleased were you
03:43to sort of put him in after last Saturday's difficult performance and to see him kind of flourish?
03:47Yeah, I think he did well. I must say, you know, that there was a few others that shined,
03:53maybe more. But, for example, when Judd Spence was bombarding forward, he was very disciplined,
03:58young age, to be there on that side, taking care of that rest-defending position. I think
04:02he handled all the tricky situations with the ball, got out of it. It was always a good
04:06support. And, you know, he covered ground very well. So, I think it was, you know, you
04:13said a very solid performance.
04:16Bye, Thomas. There seemed a much better mood at halftime. Obviously, you were 2-0 up, but
04:20it was quite notable.
04:20That helps a little bit.
04:21That helps. But it was notable around where we were sitting that...
04:24Say it again, sorry.
04:25It was notable where, certainly where we were sitting, that the fans really responded to
04:29that. And almost like there was a, I don't know if you sensed it, a conscious effort on
04:33their part to do it.
04:35I, you know, the Spurs fans are great fans. And sometimes there's ups, sometimes there's
04:44downs in football and life. But I like how the team responded. I like how the whole stadium
04:52of the fans, I could say, responded. And I like, I noticed, maybe it was me, but I noticed
04:56when Vicario's name was, I think, extra high raw. And I love that. That makes me warm
05:03inside because that's where you support your player. Because they should, you know, no one,
05:09like, no one, how can you say, talking bad about our players, the fans should feel like
05:14that. No one. They should protect them. And I think today there was a fantastic energy between
05:22both the team and the fans.
05:27Hey Thomas, congrats on the win. Have you said anything to Xavi in the dressing room after
05:30the game?
05:31Yeah, I said, what did I say? I said, well done. Really great response. Good performance.
05:41I have another question about Xavi for you. But that second goal, I think he starts in his
05:48he starts in his own half. How helpful, how good is it to have a player like that who
05:52can, in tight games, I'm not saying this was a tight game, but in general, just produce
05:56a moment like that out of nothing.
05:58Well that, that's what we, what I believe from the beginning, that Xavi can produce that
06:02out of nothing. And, and I would say, everything just needs a little bit of adaptation sometimes
06:09with everything, him, the team, everything. And this was a very good step. Now it's the next
06:12thing to do it again and again and again. But yeah, very happy for him.
06:17Chuck.
06:18Thomas, it will always be nice to get a win, but is there any greater sense of relief knowing
06:21the sort of noise there would have been had you lost to your former club?
06:26I didn't, you know, very happy with the win. I think that's the, that's the most important
06:29thing. We use enough time on thoughts that we can't do anything about. So now I'm just
06:35very happy. I think we built on, on a good Newcastle performance as well. And today, what
06:41I would say, I was just extremely happy with the offensive performance just looked more right
06:45today.
06:46And you mentioned building on things. Is that the message now that especially offensively
06:49that this is sort of the standard, we know you can do this?
06:52Yeah, that is the standard. Sometimes there's more tight games as we know, but I like what
07:00I saw from the team and that's what we need to build on and try to become even better.
07:05Just be honest with you.
07:06Thomas, did it help that you knew so much about the Brentford team, set pieces, that type of
07:13thing that you were able to set up to, to really dominate the game?
07:20Um, yeah, but you know, I've been in the, in this league for this, the fifth season. So
07:26I know very well Pep Guardiola's city team, for example, but of course he had some inside
07:30out information of some of the players. Um, so I think it was, it was like a, a normal
07:37preparation, um, just with, with small extra, uh, information bits for some, some players.
07:43And have you had a chat with Keith and Andres at all, or, you know, had the job at the job
07:47he's doing?
07:48Yeah. Uh, yeah. In general, we had a few talks through the last, uh, four months, but, uh,
07:53uh, today I hope we have a, a beyond last right now after.
07:59Hi Thomas. Um, a first league win since the opening day at home. How important is that
08:04going forward to make this place a harder place for teams to come now?
08:08Um, it's hugely important. Um, hugely important that, uh, we won, uh, home, but also the performance.
08:15Um, and yeah, we need to, to keep building on it.
08:18Let me just finish up down here.
08:20Just one, one down here, please.
08:24Uh, yeah.
08:28You said you thought the attack looked more right. Is it about connections, understanding?
08:33What was it in particular that you, you were admiring of?
08:36Yeah, I think, you know, a few things work very hard on the structure, uh, how we want
08:41the structure to be with which position we wanted for, let's say, Xavi and Mo and Richie
08:45and Kolo and also the two sitters and how we pushed yet a little bit higher.
08:49That, and then I think more of the players were more in, informed, sharper together.
08:54Um, all that, um, I think helped today.
08:57Did you, did you know that was going to come? Did you see that in training or?
09:00Yeah. To be fair, I think, I thought we had a very good training yesterday.
09:03I think just looked again, more right.
09:05I think the team in general on paper looked right today.
09:10Thank you guys.
09:12Cheers, guys.
09:13Cheers.
09:14Cheers.
09:15Cheers.
09:16Thanks a lot.
09:18That's all.
09:22$3,000.
09:23I'm happy home.
09:24Cheers.
09:25good.
09:26Congratulations.
09:27Mmm.
09:28Wow.
