Post-match press conference with Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca after the 0-0 draw with Bournemouth at Vitality Stadium in the Premier League. Arsenal’s defeat earlier in the day gave Chelsea the chance to close the gap in the title race, but they were held in a goalless stalemate on the south coast.

Antoine Semenyo had an early goal ruled out for offside before Bournemouth created the better chances in the first half, with Robert Sánchez producing several big saves to keep Chelsea level. Liam Delap then left the field with a serious looking shoulder injury after a collision with Marcos Senesi, with Marc Guiu coming on in his place.

In the second half Alejandro Garnacho headed Pedro Neto’s deep cross against the post, Cole Palmer tested Djordje Petrovic and Estêvão came off the bench as Chelsea pushed for a winner, but they could not find the final pass or finish.

Maresca admits Chelsea “missed a little bit of quality in the last third”, highlighting misplaced passes, crosses and moments when they could have shot instead of crossing, but stresses that when you are not able to win it is important not to lose and to keep clean sheets. He gives an update on Delap’s bad shoulder injury and says the team “need that kind of number nine”, praises the partnership between Wesley Fofana and Trevoh Chalobah at centre back and reflects on a tight title race, insisting that if Chelsea can win two games in a row they will still be right there alongside Arsenal and the other teams at the top.

00:00I wonder what you made of that, was it progress because you were a step forward on leads or
00:20was it more disappointment because you've only ended up with a point?
00:25I think it was a game where we missed a little bit of quality in the last third, for me.
00:31Many mistakes, we missed some passes in the last third, some moments that we could shoot
00:38and avoid that, cross, but yeah, overall when you are not able to win, we said many times
00:44that it's important that we don't lose.
00:46Was that an individual's thing, was it individuals maybe not having confidence, not taking responsibility?
00:52No, no, no, no, not for this, I think it's a normal mistake that can happen, like last
00:57pass in the last third, it's just for that, I think Cole was quite good on that, played
01:05half an hour the other day, played one hour today, so now it's important that he can build
01:10the physical condition.
01:12Yeah, unfortunately he was already out two months and he has to be out again, we don't
01:21know for how long, but looks quite bad on his shoulder.
01:25Obviously that's very frustrating for him, given how his time it shows his joint.
01:30Yeah, he has been unlucky, he was out two months already, now he has to be out again, also we
01:36are a bit unlucky because we need that kind of number nine, we tried today with the mark,
01:43but yeah, it's injury.
01:45Caris?
01:46Hi Anzo.
01:47The first game where you guys haven't scored since Crystal Palace right at the start of the
01:52season was an impressive run.
01:54I wonder what do you feel contributed to that coming to an end today?
01:57Was it tiredness?
01:58Was it all this dependence?
01:59I'm just curious what you thought.
02:01No, I think lack of quality in the last third, for me personally in terms of last pass,
02:07you know, some cross, some moment, we know that we are not going to score every game,
02:14I didn't know to be honest that was from Palace, now we're going to try to score on
02:20Tuesday, but it's important at least to keep the clean sheet that gives us at least the
02:26chance to take points.
02:27Yeah, I noticed it was Wes and Travis Hulliver starting in the middle again, I remember
02:32we spoke a while ago about kind of not having that consistent pairing set back, do you think
02:37those two are going to expect to be your pairing?
02:40At the moment, at the moment I think in the last four or five clean sheet we had, they were
02:45always there, you know, they are doing very good.
02:48Dan?
02:49Enzo, after the Arsenal game where you were playing against a team who were a long way
02:54clear at the top of the table, with ten men when you hold them, it still felt like there
02:58was a chance that you could contest a title with them, but after Belize defeat and not
03:05taking advantage of Arsenal leaving today, does that feel like, not over-mathematically,
03:11obviously, but does it feel like it's a very long way to be challenging Arsenal now?
03:15I think it's, my message after Arsenal was that if in February-March we are where we
03:22were, we are in a title race, that's why I said because it's so long way, too many games
03:29until February-March that it's difficult.
03:31But again, the table is so close, tight, you say.
03:36You win two games in a row and you are there, in case you are not able to win two games in a row,
03:42you drop a little bit.
03:43I'm still thinking that the four, five, six teams that they are at the top, they're going
03:48to be all close in the moment that you are able to win one, two games in a row.
03:53OK!
03:54Thanks guys!
03:55Thank you!
03:56Thank you!
03:57Bye!
