Embargoed pre-match embargoed press conference with Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola ahead of Fulham v Manchester City in the Premier League at Craven Cottage.

Guardiola gives an update on Phil Foden’s contract situation, saying he hopes the midfielder stays for his entire career and praises his growing leadership on the pitch. He discusses Foden’s ambition to become a future captain and says it depends on his behaviour on and off the pitch.

Guardiola defends Gianluigi Donnarumma’s adaptation to the Premier League after several yellow cards for protesting and insists he is “adult enough” to learn without intervention. He reflects on the 3-2 win over Leeds United, admitting City reopened the game with mistakes but were still in control overall.

He outlines the need for goals from across the team, referencing past seasons where players like Ilkay Gundogan, Raheem Sterling and Sergio Aguero contributed heavily. Guardiola stresses the importance of the December and January schedule with eight Premier League games in five weeks plus domestic cup fixtures, confirming it is too early to discuss January transfers.

00:00Phil scored twice on Saturday. He's coming up to 18 months left on his contract and
00:06I'm just wondering where that is and obviously he must be a player that you'll want
00:10to sign on here and keep here for many many years. You're right, completely right.
00:18No update on where that's at? No idea but hopefully gonna stay
00:22all his career here. He's a special player, Man City fan for the academy so no doubt about that but
00:34I don't know him, he's itching the club, I don't know.
00:46Just on GGO, I think three of those four yellows have been for protesting,
00:50complaining against decisions. Is that something he needs to adapt to the league or just stop doing
00:55or is that part of his game? Yeah, for sure. He will step by step understand things in the new league and
01:02new behaviours. Is it a case of speaking to him? No. No? He's adult enough. He's what, sorry? He's adult enough.
01:12Right. And just the way that the weekend went for the whole team, it felt like a good win in the end
01:22after the weekend and Arsenal dropping points? Yeah, absolutely. So it was a game under control and we
01:28make two mistakes, especially the first one after the motions was there. And we had to try to, you know,
01:36when the opening score goals, we were deserving of giving away for ourselves and because we reopened the game
01:42when it was in control. But yeah, always as I said, there's a process instead of getting better
01:51and getting better. And of course, get the results always help us and try to, you know, to continue that way,
01:58make a game by game, a good run of points.
02:07Hi Pep. Phil was talking to us after the match on Saturday about how he thinks he's become more of a
02:14leader or he sees himself as more of a leader in the squad. Have you seen that aspect of his
02:19his game, his personality develop over the last... On the pitch, we have been like that.
02:23So a vocal is not a guy who talk much in the dressing room, but on the pitch, always have never behind,
02:33never hide behind the scenes and never hide, you know, what's going on. Always took a responsibility
02:38for the day one. Always have been an incredible presence on the pitch.
02:41And obviously, because he's a homegrown player, Phil, and he would probably want to stay for the rest of
02:47his career. Would you see him sort of entering that captaincy group sometime later on in his...
02:53He wants, yeah. He wants to become, yeah. But captains that became, at the end, become
02:59from themselves or your behaviour on and off the pitch. So it depends on him.
03:07Hi Pep. When Aguero was here, he would often score 20-plus Premier League goals. You'd have someone
03:11like Raheem Sterling maybe getting 17 or 18. Can Phil Foden fill that role with regard to Erling?
03:17Erling, you know, sort of 17 or 18 Premier League. I don't know.
03:19I've done it in the past. Erling, I feel in the year that he won the last Premier League,
03:26four in a row, and was the best player. I think, I don't know how many goals he scored,
03:31but he scored a lot of goals and assists, but that's the truth. So the years were when success,
03:35not just the strikers, you know, especially wingers attacking midfielders, especially one year from
03:41Gundo, the year of the travel. Gundo scored a lot of goals, so we need that.
03:44And when that happens, is that a function of your team playing well and creating chances
03:48or is it up to the players individually to sort of, you know, score these goals?
03:51Absolutely. The way we play, we had to create, we had to try to create a lot of chances,
03:57but that is the truth. For example, Tijani have the last three or four games. I know many games
04:02always shoot inside of the box. The players save, the keepers save, and they arrive a moment that
04:08they put the ball in the net and our game and our results will be better. That's for sure.
04:16Hi, Pep. Tomorrow's the first game. I think there's eight games, eight Premier League games
04:23coming up in the next sort of seven weeks, sorry, five weeks starting tomorrow. How,
04:28how sort of crucial is this, is this sort of December Christmas period?
04:31Well, you are 20 points in front of the second, so it's not crucial, but we are in the position and
04:37we came, for example, the week before, before international break, that was a crucial for us
04:44because of course, Astana was, it's not dropping points. So yeah, the situation I do have, we can't
04:49do in games. Otherwise it will be difficult. You're going to need all your squad, aren't you? Because
04:54there's, there's also two cup games in there as well. So, you know, it's obviously, you see the schedule
04:59in my office and I see January, December, January, especially January and February as well. So,
05:05if we continue in the Carabao Cubs and the FA Cup is involved in this kind of stuff, so have a lot,
05:12a lot of games. No doubt about that. And is it too early to ask about January,
05:16whether you're likely to do any business or...? Too early.
05:23Anything else, Walsh? Have a lovely day. Bye bye. Thank you.
