Embargoed pre match press conference with Tottenham Hotspur head coach Thomas Frank ahead of Tottenham v Brentford in the Premier League at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, held at Hotspur Way.
Frank discusses Tottenham’s recent run and the need to create more chances, agreeing that if you do not shoot it is difficult to score and stressing that players should shoot when the ball drops on the edge of the box. He explains the work going into phase two and phase three around the area, the play and run movements out wide and how better structure in the final third will lead to more situations to finish from outside and inside the box.
He talks about the big difference in the volume of games compared to his time at Brentford, the short turnarounds, travel and the challenge of rotating while still building fluency and relationships in a squad that is playing Premier League and Champions League football. Frank outlines the formations used so far, why injuries to key attacking players make it harder to settle on a consistent front line and why he still wants six, seven, eight players to build strong on pitch connections.
Frank accepts that one win in eight is not good enough and says there is nothing he wants more than to flip that to seven wins in eight. He answers questions on losing players to international duty and wanting to keep them as long as possible, and finishes by explaining that every decision is taken with two paths in mind, winning the next game and building something sustainable. Bit by bit, he wants Spurs to become a well oiled engine that is impossible to stop.

00:00Yeah, I think it sounds like a good idea, I think if you don't shoot it's difficult to score a goal, definitely, if you take that approach.
00:15I'm also of the belief that I think you should play the chance big, but of course if you are in balance outside the box I think you should shoot, yeah.
00:23There's this stat that in the last four or five games they've seen having a shot on target in the first half, and I've noticed watching top of them, I don't watch them as much of you, so you might turn around.
00:35I don't see them shooting outside the box very much, I tend to run across the box and lay it off, whereas sometimes you just have a go and you can get lucky, is it?
00:46When you're in this kind of period, would it be better to take a bit more of a chance, do you think?
00:51Yeah, I think it's always a combination of different factors that is affecting each other.
00:58I definitely think when the ball drops on the edge of the box you should shoot, and we're ending in areas around the box you should shoot.
01:06And we, as I said a few times, I think we're working very hard on our phase two and our phase three, how we get into the right positions, and how we get enough play and run movement on the side to produce the breakthroughs and penetrations.
01:20And the better we do that, the more we'll do that, the more we'll end in those situations, the more we'll get good opportunities to shoot.
01:26Have you encouraged the players to shoot more at all?
01:31No, I haven't. I encourage them to do everything we can to create more chances and score some goals.
01:39You can encourage them to shoot, but I'm pretty sure players also feel naturally, if we're in a good position, you shoot.
01:48Yeah, try Tom.
01:50Yeah, try Tom.
01:51Day-to-day, what are the biggest differences between managing Tottenham and managing Breville?
01:55I think the biggest difference, I think obviously now, is the amount of games. I think that's the biggest thing, the short turnaround.
02:08Now, of course, as I said, I experienced during Covid, we had 21 games in a row. There was Saturday, Tuesday, Saturday, Wednesday and so on.
02:17But of course, we had two spells of 2-2-2. We love traveling. That's heavy. And also the ability to think and, how can you say, nail the messages, nail the team, nail all those bits.
02:36Why you try to create a team that should be more and more in sync, where you maybe it's not that easy and also need to rotate a bit and you need to do those things.
02:48That's the challenge. And then, no, I think that's the biggest deal.
02:56I was going to say, there have been a lot of changes in terms of the line-up in the formation in the first three months and I guess you're still finding the right formulas.
03:03But how do you balance that with trying to find kind of fluency and combination as well?
03:08Yeah, I think it's fair to say that in, I don't even know how many games we played, around 20 I think in total or something like that.
03:16I think we played two with a back three, which was two different games. And then we played two, where you can say we played with two strikers.
03:28And then the two and one of them was PSG away, which is still like a special mission kind of thing.
03:38And the rest has been a variation of 4-2-3-1 with either wing or midfield on the side. So the same bit, I think that's one bit.
03:49And then as I said, it's also finding that balance of consistency with six, seven, eight players that can find a more relationship.
04:02And also the relationship between the offensive players, while you still need to do some kind of rotation.
04:09And that just makes it a bigger challenge and there's no excuse, it's just the way it is.
04:14Just in terms of your pressure and expectation, I think it's said a lot that Brentford could lose three or four games and no one would notice.
04:21Whereas here, people notice. Is that something that surprised you? Have you felt that sort of extra weight in your first game?
04:28Yeah, definitely. Definitely felt that. It hasn't surprised me because I knew that was the difference when you walked into it.
04:38But you don't, like anything else, you don't know it before you stand in it. Like really know it. So now I know it. So okay, it's like this. Then we do all that.
04:49You're welcome. Tom.
04:50Hi, Thomas. Your tricky start at Brentford, which seems a long, long time ago. Now, given how well it went in the end.
04:58What did that, how did that help you? What did that teach you going into this beginning in Spurs?
05:05Um, I think actually, that was my second tough start. I think I said I'd also had it in my first head coach job, senior job in Bronte.
05:14I think both experiences showed me, um, the more you can stick to your principles, processes, structure, uh, to what you believe in, um, and constantly, uh, how can you say, try to add the layers you want to add to the squad in terms of culture, uh, behavior, uh, the way you want to play, um, finding the right formula, all that.
05:41You just need to keep, keep doing that. Uh, and then sometimes in, in, in Brentford, for, uh, for example, we played four, three, three, I think 10 games.
05:51And then the 11th game, boom, changed it three, four, three, because that was the right thing with the players.
05:56And then we had a fantastic front three in Watkins, um, uh, Neil Mopu and Seid Burrama, uh, that just clicked. Um, so, so it was also, but also in that spell, I clearly remember suddenly Watkins was out, uh, Seid was, uh,
06:11injured another one. So the front three, there was a key offensive players were out. So that's also something that, that, you know, if you don't have that, it's just make it more of a challenge.
06:20A little bit the same, like we have now, um, that some of the, the key offensive players are out. Okay. No problem. It is what it is.
06:26It's my job to, to, uh, how can you say, find good solutions. Um, and, and in that, that said, as I said, we, we still managed to score 23 goals, which is quite reliable.
06:35And, um, is obviously a home game against a team that a lot of fans will be hoping and expecting, to be honest.
06:42I'm also, uh, hoping and expecting us to win. I know it will not be, uh, uh, that easy and straightforward, but, um, we will go out with, with belief and bravery and intensity and, uh, and do everything we can to win.
06:56But, uh, I understand, uh, the question.
06:58Well, my question was going to be, Fuller last week, it was almost over before it began, after a bifficult start.
07:05And, you know, the anxiety in the crowd and the team seems to be fairly obvious. Um, how do you keep them calm, going into the speech?
07:14Tell you if they can see a nearly goal like last week, how do you make sure they stay firm?
07:19I think, uh, I still think it was a freak six minutes, but that of course happens when, uh, uh, when things are not, uh, not perfect.
07:30Um, I think it's about talking about it. You can't run away from it. You know, they'll be, they'll be, they'll be, can't do that.
07:38So, uh, of course, speak about no matter what happened, stick to the plan. No matter what happened, be calm.
07:44No matter what happened, keep doing what, uh, we should do. And then encourage each other. And then, like, with everything, yeah, it's, it's one step at a time.
07:51It's one minute at a time. Keep doing the right thing. Keep working your way into the game. Um, and then we know every game, you will have a bit of momentum.
07:59Uh, and then it's about, you know, how can you say, take that momentum when you have it.
08:04Yeah, and it's Evo, Thiago, um, Charleston, you know, both sort of buying, or Hogan's have been mixed with Brazil.
08:10Two strikers, you know, well, obviously you didn't get to use Evo as much as Evo to Blackwell since then, right?
08:16There's an injury, but can you just, are you stopping a little bit about how they are like, are they similar or how they differ?
08:22Um, I think two, uh, two good players. Uh, I, for Richie, he's, he's in form, um, right now, uh, with goals.
08:34And I also think he touched wood and never been at this fit the last three years.
08:38I think that's also another big credit to, um, to the medical and performance department and, and, and what we do.
08:46Um, I think he's very good in the box. I think he, um, when he has his highest level and confidence, I think his linker play and holder play is very good.
08:53Um, and I think he's difficult to play against, um, um, in general.
08:59Um, Thiago, uh, both of them are good pressing players. Thiago, both of them are actually very good in the air, uh, in terms of hitting abilities.
09:08Thiago got a bit more physicality, uh, his holder play is good, but maybe not as good as Richie Wright.
09:15Uh, he's, he's a little bit younger. Um, but two, two players with a strong mentality.
09:22Yeah, just lastly, you mentioned earlier about the left wing position, how no one right now is particularly sort of leaning down that, that position.
09:30January is just around the corner. Is there any chance that sort of the position would be something one week?
09:36I think we, we look at not every position, but we are prepared, um, in, in the, yeah, in every position to see if, if there is something, uh, we can do to improve the squad.
09:49I think we always would look into that, uh, right now and just focus on, uh, do everything we can to find, uh, the one that can take next step.
09:57Plus, we always need more than one, uh, that do it, uh, to, um, to help the team because there is starters and there is finishers.
10:04Come on, come on, Ed.
10:06Thomas, um, the other day you were talking about, uh, Grand Prix and the previous clubs.
10:10You, um, you, you try to build consistency, build tested, invest in this and culture.
10:16Um, the other night at Spurs, I think, uh, sorry, against Newcastle, I think Spurs showed a bit of the competitiveness side of it.
10:22But the other two, maybe not so much. Is that something that you're still working on? How long should that take?
10:28What's the two? Culture and? Culture and consistency.
10:31Yeah. Uh, yeah, definitely. Um, I think, again, as I said, I think there is a good foundation.
10:38It's not like it's Ground Zero. Uh, I think there's a very good foundation on the culture.
10:42I think the, the players are very good, very good people. They want the best. They care about each other.
10:46Uh, and how can we, can we build that better and better, uh, to have that?
10:51Uh, to have that, we, we say winning mentality, what is winning mentality, but also that yet you, it's every game, it's every minute, uh, of every game.
11:02It's three times a week, uh, where you need to be very competitive, uh, that kind of culture, uh, dealing with set packs, dealing with where we want to build, build something.
11:12And then the consistency, that's, that's the next bit we, we try to build in performances, of course, but also players that consistently can play.
11:20With the physical load, the mental load, uh, three days a week, uh, and performing.
11:25And that's, that's, that's the, that's the next challenge.
11:27And, uh, and just on Xavi, um, obviously, uh, Fred could, yeah.
11:31You saw Dam's Dodger was a really bull car built, you know, the team's flaming.
11:35Did you see Xavi as somebody who could build that same hole, that Spurs, you know, really made, made a difference in creating shots?
11:42Yeah, definitely.
11:43It was one of the reasons why we, why we got him here.
11:46I think he got, um, a very big, uh, potential, uh, to be that, um, a playmaker, how can you say, creator, but also finisher.
11:57I think he got a very good finish and very good at scoring goals and arriving in the, in the right, um, areas.
12:03Um, and I'm big believe that he, he, he would, he would be very good for us, but it is like with any, anything we, uh, we would like it to be like this, um, to, to make it work.
12:15Uh, and sometimes we have, uh, have a team where you come into a club where a team where everything is just smooth, everything working, no problem, boom, you step in, uh, you know, even that, uh, you can see, compared with Wietz at, uh, at Liverpool also coming into, uh, uh, uh, champions.
12:32Uh, and it's, it's, it's not, it's not, it's not that easy all the time.
12:36Uh, other times it takes a little bit, a little bit longer.
12:39Um, but as long as, as the player train well, keep the right attitude, keep doing the right thing and then step by step, um, um, we will see, uh, him flourish.
12:51I'm, I'm, I'm not in doubt of that.
12:53Uh, just because we're always so good to judge them now, which probably after, what, a year or two, oh, how good, how good is he?
13:00Now everyone's talking about Damsgaard.
13:02It did two, two seasons before he really froze in the third one.
13:07Is it a little bit as well about your, your relationship with him as well as his relationship with the rest of the team?
13:11You know, how you, you know, communicate what you want with him?
13:14Yeah, I think it's like, I'm a big believer in, in terms of trying to create a relationship, a professional relationship with the players.
13:21That, that, that's how I work.
13:23Um, so it's, it's with the same with, with Xavi, it's with Mati, it was Brandon and with, you know, it's, it's all the players.
13:30How do we, how do we get it working?
13:32And also with, with, which players, you know, where, where do we find the right position for them?
13:36So that's a, a, a, a constant development.
13:39Mark?
13:40John Asai.
13:41Is it, is it fair when people say you don't know your best team there?
13:44Yeah, I think it's fair.
13:45I think it's fair.
13:46Um, I think it's, um, I think it's, um, I think I got an idea of, uh, quite a few positions, but the, um, that I couldn't say, I also think there's competitions by the way.
13:58So it's not that, uh, that, that, that, that easy all, uh, all the time to, uh, say, okay, it's just those 11 because never those 11, they need more than 11 players.
14:06But normally you, uh, you see the most teams when they are finding the, the strongest team.
14:12Okay. You know, okay. The strongest team that would be those nine players all the time.
14:15And then maybe change two, maybe sometimes it's 10.
14:17Because when you came in, it seemed like you, you settled on something.
14:20And, and then it's more recent, like, have it's been, uh, trying different things.
14:26Yeah, it's a combination also the amount of games, uh, and that rotation.
14:31So it's not, uh, it's, it, I think it will be definitely until, I don't know how long, uh, whatever, uh, for hopefully the rest of the season, we're doing very well in the Champions League as well.
14:42But we play that many games, there will be rotations, but they hope to be closer and closer.
14:46You can see, okay, that is closer to the nine, 10 players.
14:49That's, that's what we go with.
14:51Are you, are you in trouble by one winning eight?
14:55Uh, I prefer the other way around seven out of eight.
14:59Let me put it that way.
15:00And we talk about performances.
15:01Yeah.
15:02Yeah.
15:03Yeah.
15:04Yeah.
15:05I know you can't run that.
15:06That's, uh, that's, uh, that's a, that's a stats I like to have, uh, to reverse.
15:10And then do the other way around.
15:12So, uh, there's nothing I want more than have seven out of eight wins.
15:17Yeah.
15:18Can I just ask a small run of Kwiatkowski, but when do you expect Team Saar?
15:22Who Saar?
15:23Uh, I don't have the dates on top of mind, but isn't it something that, uh, yeah, 15th, I think.
15:32Something like that, yeah.
15:33Yeah.
15:34Yeah.
15:35I definitely keep him, keep him as long as possible.
15:36I'll put it that way.
15:37Yeah.
15:38Uh, that's, that, please ask me that question when we, uh, the two games are further down
15:43the line, but I will do everything I can to keep him as long as possible.
15:46I will finish with Ryan, please.
15:48Hi, Thomas.
15:49Hey.
15:50Has there been any discussion around you or the squad about how Newcastle needs to maybe
15:56represent a turning point in your season because it was a good point obviously fighting
16:01back from behind twice, but if you lose on Saturday, obviously that hard work kind of goes out the window.
16:06Yeah.
16:07Yeah.
16:08I think it's, sometimes you hit the momentum.
16:11You've got a good point, win on Saturday, boom.
16:13Uh, then, uh, then we carry on.
16:15Um, that's definitely the aim.
16:18That's what we go for.
16:19That's the big belief, uh, that we can, and we will do that.
16:22Um, so I'm not, um, I'm, you know, um, as you said, I'm more looking into, okay, that
16:27was a, not only a very good point with all the circumstances, but I, I felt that in the last
16:3560, I think there was a lot to build on.
16:38And I felt, felt that the first 30, uh, we put like, okay, a little bit more.
16:44Okay.
16:45We, we stay in this no matter what happens.
16:47Um, and I think also it's fair to say the last, when someone told me that the last couple
16:52of times we've been up there, we've been down at halftime.
16:54So just that is a, is a, is a, is a small win.
16:57Um, and that's, that's something we built on.
17:00And you stayed at Bradford for nine years.
17:03That's a long way away.
17:04But could you see yourself hopefully staying at Spurs for, for that long?
17:09Is that really, Steve?
17:10I think everything is possible.
17:12I think you ask me now, nine years is a long time.
17:15Um, but, um, I said, said from the beginning, every action, everything I do is with two
17:22pathways.
17:23One need to do everything we can to win tomorrow, uh, and the day after tomorrow and the day
17:27after that.
17:28But everything is taken with the longterm vision, because if you don't build anything sustainable,
17:33longterm, I don't believe in you can be a, a big club or top club.
17:37Um, if it's only two, Oh, we survived one more game.
17:40Oh, we survived.
17:41No, no.
17:42Uh, and then there is pragmatic choices along the way, because there is players in form,
17:48out of form injuries, everything that, that, but bit by bit, we'll get closer and closer
17:54to, uh, uh, well oiled engine impossible to stop.
18:00Okay.
18:01Thank you very much.
18:02Thank you guys.
18:04Thank you guys.
