Seth and Sean lay out why last night's TNF game was a great reminder for Texans fans, and dive into Texans DT Tim Settle being out for the rest of the season.
Transcript
00:00I think that game last night, that game last night, I think, was instructive.
00:04I think it was a good reminder for Texan fans and the Texans themselves.
00:09Hey, man, I know the Chiefs are 6-6.
00:12I get it.
00:13Right.
00:13But you are going on the road in a big spot where you've not been great.
00:17And, yeah, you've been on a nice win streak lately,
00:19but this is still Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs the same way last night.
00:21I think the Cowboys found out this is still Dan Campbell and Jameer Gibbs.
00:26Same round, who was incredible last night.
00:28Yeah.
00:28And the Lions.
00:28There are.
00:29The Chiefs are a wounded animal right now, but it's a wounded animal.
00:35They're hiding a switchblade underneath their belt.
00:38They have the ability at any given time for Pat Mahomes to go superhero.
00:43The other thing about the Chiefs' defense is, you know,
00:45there are pretty some alarming stats about where the Chiefs are defensively right now
00:51compared to where they typically are.
00:53And yet they're keeping teams out of the red zone.
00:58You know, they're keeping games close.
01:00They've lost a bunch of games, but they're all one-score games.
01:03So they don't come with the same ferocity, and they're not as intimidating or as scary as they once were.
01:11But they're still a solid football team.
01:13Yeah.
01:13And the classic, if you removed all of the Super Bowl history and their recent history from what this season is,
01:22they're the classic team that you look at and say, well, they're 6-6.
01:25But, boy, you know, coin flips a different way a few times, and they're sitting there as a nine-win football team.
01:33So, like, if you evaluate this, you almost, you know, it's weird.
01:37I almost am more intimidated by this team if I forget their recent past.
01:42And because it's tempting to say, oh, yeah, this is it.
01:46This is like the Astros this year.
01:48It's just kind of the bloom is off the rose, and they're just not the same team anymore.
01:52If you look at this as an up-and-coming team, the Chiefs were, wow, look at some of these guys.
01:58Boy, this Karloff, this kid, and this Chris Jones kid.
02:01Boy, they seem like, boy, if they could just figure it out.
02:05These guys are doing something.
02:07They're just not that consistent.
02:08Have you seen this Mahomes kid?
02:10Have you seen some of the plays he makes?
02:12I mean, if he ever really puts it all together, they really might have something.
02:17Don't sleep on this young Chiefs team.
02:20I've seen some things this year, Sean, that suggest that this young Chiefs team might actually achieve something.
02:27Right, right, right.
02:28And then you wake up, and you're like, oh, yeah, that's right.
02:30They all make $120 million combined, those three guys you just named.
02:33You really need to take the Instagram filter off.
02:36You're like, oh, they old.
02:37Yeah, they ugly.
02:40Bad skin.
02:41Yeah, this Travis Kelsey kid, though, seriously.
02:44I know his season stats aren't all that impressive, but every now and then he really busts one out.
02:49If he ever figures it out, this is a potent potential Super Bowl caliber team, this young Chiefs team.
02:55The Texans got bad news yesterday.
02:58Anyway, Tim Settle out for the season.
03:01We know he limped off the field on Sunday against the Colts, and it turns out season ending, I believe a foot, season ending foot injury for Tim Settle.
03:10The other one that's in the short term here, I think even more problematic than Settle, is that Kamari Lasseter seems to be veering towards a game time decision.
03:19He's mispracticed the last two days, also with a foot injury that Aaron Wilson said.
03:26I'm pulling up the tweet, but something to the effect of, yeah, here it is.
03:28Texans corner Kamari Lasseter is sidelined with a foot injury.
03:32While it isn't regarded as season ending, his availability on Sunday against the Chiefs is up in the air per sources.
03:39The Texans did add a cornerback off of waivers yesterday from the Bills named Jamarcus Ingram, so that's precautionary, I would imagine.
03:48Not a great sign if they're picking up corners, and Kamari Lasseter is mispracticed, but that would be, that's one of the, you know, Tim Settle, that's a tough one because he's played so well,
03:58and he and Sheldon Rankins have been such a good duo there in between Will Anderson Jr. and Daniil Hunter, but Kamari Lasseter is almost like one of those four pillars, Seth, in this defense.
04:10You know, it's almost like the four corners. You've got the two ends that collapse everything in the pocket, and then you've got the two corners that smother everything in the back, and Lasseter and Stingley.
04:21I almost feel like they can deal with injuries to anybody kind of in that in-between, you know, in the defensive tackle room.
04:28Linebacker losing Aziz would be problematic, but he's not the level of player these guys are.
04:32Kalen Bullock is approaching that level, but this defense, the foundation of this defense is its ability of its corners on the back and its ability of its edge rushers on the front end.
04:42I like that. I like the visual of that, of those four pillars being the, you know, you've got those four dudes, and it's almost like you've got a beach house, you know, one of those elevated beach houses.
04:53Yeah, Galveston Beach House.
04:55And you hear there's a storm coming, and they're like, well, don't worry, it's only Category 1.
04:59And you're like, yeah, but I'm missing one of the columns on my beach house.
05:05Yeah.
05:05That's, normally I'd say, okay, cool, I'm ready for a Category 1.
05:10I'm not so sure, with only three columns on my beach house.
05:13That's right, that's right, and that's Kamari, man.
05:15He's the, and this is.
05:16Got a lot of tax shelters in this beach house.
05:18No, no, and this is fun.
05:19Yeah, I write 50% off as an office.
05:22That's right, that's right.
05:24Right, so, and this is more than a Category 1 hurricane that they're approaching on Sunday.
05:29I mean, it's not peak level Chiefs.
05:31It's not Cat 5 like they once were.
05:32No, no, but it's a solid 2 or 3 at the very least, I would say.
05:36So, it's, that's problematic if there's no Kamari.
05:38Now, the good news is that the Chiefs are all sorts of banged up still on the offensive line.
05:43Trey Smith, Trey Smith and Jawan Taylor did not practice again yesterday.
05:48And we know that Josh Simmons is out, he's on injured reserve, so he's not a problem for the Texans this week.
05:53Well, and the only, and the other big one, I didn't, I didn't, if I missed it, I didn't hear you mention Woody Marks didn't practice yesterday either.
06:00Oh, no, he did practice yesterday.
06:02Why am I looking at, oh, all right, sorry about that.
06:04Yeah, Woody practiced, yeah, Woody and Will.
06:06I apologize, I'm looking at Wednesday's injury report.
06:08Yeah, Woody, Will, and Trent Brown all practiced yesterday.
06:10Well, did you know that Woody Marks didn't practice on Wednesday?
06:13I do, I do, and I know he limped off.
06:14I know, I didn't hear you say it, whatever.
06:16Briefly, briefly with a foot injury.
06:18Briefly with a foot injury on Sunday.
06:20No, Woody practiced, so that's good.
06:22Yeah, Kamari's the big one.
06:23Kamari's the big one.
06:24It's a big game, man.
06:25The Texans, for whatever reason, for whatever reason, did I get that right?
06:29About Woody, you're shaking your head.
06:31No, I'm shaking my head at the Texans' website.
06:33I'm pissed off.
06:34Oh, okay.
06:34They don't have yesterday's practice injury report up.
06:38The Texans, for whatever reason, every week, the last few weeks, the biggest swing between
06:45the win effect and the loss effect on your chances of making the playoffs, the Texans
06:51have been the biggest one the last few weeks, and fortunately, they've been winning.
06:54But according to PFF, Seth, and we know there's different outlets out there that spew the percentages
06:58out, but this is the most optimistic one that I saw, so I choose this one.
07:03If they win this game, the Texans against the Chiefs, they have a 90% chance of making
07:07the postseason.
07:08Yeah, I saw that.
07:10The Athletic gives the Texans, I think, a 78% chance of making the playoffs if they win
07:15this game.
07:15That feels a little more accurate, if I'm being honest with myself.
07:17Most of them are somewhere between 70% and 90%, but 90% or whatever the ESPN one is that
07:24you just said.
07:24PFF, yeah.
07:24That's the most, yes, and PFF, my God.
07:28That's the most, Wednesday.
07:30That's the most, that's the most aggressive one I've seen.
07:34ESPN's was up there, too.
07:35That's why, ESPN was a pretty healthy Texans in the playoffs if they win this game.
07:41Yeah, the ones I've seen, the ones I've seen have all been in that high 70s to above 80.
07:4790% is the most optimistic.
07:49PFF, he says, even with a loss, they're still better than a coin flip chance of making the
07:53postseason, and that's kind of how I feel.
07:55I think if they lose, if they, I, I'm not going to do if they win or lose.
07:58I'm just going to take a look at these last five games as a snapshot.
08:01Yeah.
08:01I think it'd be incredibly disappointing if they didn't go three and two in these last five
08:05games.
08:06Incredibly disappointing.
08:07Right.
08:07No, and a lot of it is that there are certain things about the offense, despite the fact
08:12that they're not scoring boatloads of points, but that are clicking.
08:16And as we saw with Davis Mills, and we're seeing the same thing with CJ Stroud, the pass protection
08:21is just night and day from what it was early in the season.
08:24The ability of the quarterback to get the ball out quickly, and I say quarterback because
08:28we saw this with both Davis Mills and, and we've seen it from CJ Stroud all season.
08:33He's been getting the ball out quickly.
08:34But versus the blitz on Sunday in the Colts game, man, they were good.
08:41I mean, it was a combination of pass protection, including the tight ends and wide receivers
08:45and running backs.
08:47CJ understand where to go with the ball when he was blitzed, recognizing it.
08:51CJ making pre-snap adjustments.
08:53It was all really, really good.
08:55CJ throwing the ball in the dirt when he was under pressure once.
08:59You know, when he, and he could have, he could have had an outlet to the running back, but
09:03it probably would have been kind of dicey and he just threw it in the dirt.
09:05Yeah.
09:06The decision making on when to take chances and when not to, there were some things in
09:10that Colts game that really did click.
09:13And if you add to the fact that they did have a point blank touchdown to Dalton Schultz in
09:19the red zone, but Jake Andrews had blocked Grover Stewart so effectively that Grover Stewart
09:25just stopped rushing and left up in the air.
09:27Yeah.
09:28Hey, stop blocking him so effectively.
09:30Make him feel like he's got a chance at still rushing the quarterback.
09:33Right.
09:34Jake Andrews.
09:35Right, right.
09:35Yeah.
09:35So CJ can get the ball to Dalton Schultz.
09:37Yeah, that would have been a touchdown right there.
09:38Yeah, so there's some things in that game that just systemically look so much cleaner
09:44than anything we saw in the first few games of the season.
09:47So get rid of the procedural issues, some of the little technique things here and there.
09:52And if they continue to clean these things up, which I expect they will as long as these
09:58offensive linemen stay healthy, that this is a team that's either peaking or ascending
10:05or whatever you want to say it at just the right time as you enter December.
10:09We got a question, a couple people on the text page, the Tim Settle injury.
10:13Maybe they feel like we just brushed by that a little bit, but Chris and Katie is one of
10:17them.
10:17What do the Texans do now with no Tim Settle in that defensive line rotation?
10:21They keep rotating their defensive linemen through.
10:23All those guys play pretty equal numbers of snaps.
10:27So Tim Settle's been a great signing for the Texans.
10:32And he's made some great plays.
10:35But they'll play four defensive tackles on a game day.
10:38And they can move Danico Autry down inside on passing downs and things like that.
10:43But it's not, I don't mean to minimize Tim Settle's contributions to the team, but it's
10:49not as devastating as losing a guy who's a full-time starter who's out there for 60 or
10:5470 snaps a game.
10:55It's not.
10:56But the only thing I would say, Seth, is that there's, after the first four guys, and
11:01I'll use, I'm keeping Tim Settle in this group.
11:03We know what the group looked like.
11:05It was Settle, Sheldon Rankins, and then they would rotate Mario Edwards Jr. and Tommy
11:09Togiai in.
11:10Yeah.
11:10I'd imagine we see maybe a little uptick of those guys.
11:12And I say that because every guy after them on the depth chart is on injured reserve.
11:18Keontae Hamilton, IR.
11:19Fully fought Akasi, IR.
11:20Now maybe one of these guys comes back from IR in the next week or so, but they're not
11:25coming back for the Chiefs game, I don't think.
11:27Kurt Heinish, IR.
11:28So Danico Autry, I think you nailed it.
11:31I think we probably see, my guess is that it becomes maybe more of a three-man rotation
11:36of those guys with Danico Autry on passing downs probably.
11:39Yeah.
11:39Yeah.
11:40Yeah.
11:40And not even, and not necessarily.
11:42I mean, Sheldon Rankins and Mario Edwards are your guys that you might have out there.
11:47And they'll play, they play five defensive linemen at times.
11:51A lot of times on passing downs, yeah, it's standard, especially on third and long, to
11:55have more defensive ends at the defensive tackle position.
11:58So it's, they can manage this.
12:01If they had one more injury, then it gets really tough.
12:03Because none of your defensive tackles are guys that you feel really comfortable for,
12:07you know, 60 or 70 snaps per game.
12:09That's when teams can start to really try to hammer you with the run.
12:13But when guys are coming in with fresh legs, it just, it makes you, it makes you that much
12:17better.
12:18Whatever you're, wherever you grade out as a defensive lineman, if you're taking 70 snaps
12:23per game, when you go down to 35 snaps per game, you're, you're a better football player
12:27by like 10 to 15%.
12:29Makes sense.
12:29Because you're just so fresh all the time.
12:31Your, your bull rushes are more effective and you can do them more, more frequently.
12:35It's just, uh, that's, and three is a good rotation plus adding Danico Autry into the
12:40mix, but they're, they're not allowed to have any more injuries.
12:42No, they can't.
12:43No more injuries.
12:44Yeah.
12:44It's, you look at this depth chart and everything after the last three guys, it's all red IR next
12:49to their names.
12:50It's, it's, uh, it's tough to look at.
