The crew debates the lowest acceptable outcome for the Texans this season and whether anything short of a deep playoff run should be considered a disappointment.
Transcript
00:00What would be a fulfilling Texan season for you?
00:02Or what is the barest minimum of a fulfilling Texan season for you?
00:06Clearly, I think the answer is, win a Super Bowl.
00:09That would fulfill me in ways that I can't imagine, I imagine.
00:12So, clearly that is an answer.
00:14But what's the low watermark for you?
00:17What's the floor for you?
00:18I want you to really think about this.
00:19I'm very curious as to what the answer might be.
00:21I'm trying myself to really think, okay, like, let's say it's not win or get to the Super Bowl.
00:27Would I still be happy if?
00:29Would we still, if I see, if this happens, and I keep, I go, I've gone from everything from,
00:40well, if C.J. Stroud just shows us something and somehow they take a tough loss in the divisional round
00:45again,
00:46you know, like actually shows us something.
00:48Like shows us.
00:48And then you end up with like a 13-second type situation, right?
00:51And then something happens in the divisional round, you know, it happens.
00:53It's the NFL.
00:54Single elimination.
00:55That's kind of my floor a little bit.
00:57C.J. Stroud, you've got to see something.
00:58C.J. Stroud have like a, and I ain't going to say an MVP season, but somewhere close to it
01:04where you're like, okay, this is our franchise quarterback right here.
01:07Even if you get to the divisional round and let's say it was a bad matchup or something like that
01:12or a bad break where they end up losing,
01:15I ain't going to sit here and be mad like, man, I ain't going to get to the AFC championship
01:18again and all, I won't be upset over that.
01:21I got to tell you, Figgy, I've thought about that and I'm considering that.
01:25That's not enough for me.
01:26It's not?
01:26It's not.
01:27You know, I, I, maybe I'm just.
01:30So that's not your floor.
01:30That's not my floor.
01:31Can I be the better?
01:32Maybe I'm just greedy.
01:34Maybe, maybe it's the fact, maybe it's the fact that I've, you know, been watching football in this city for.
01:39They never got there.
01:4136 years.
01:42Yeah.
01:42I have to, I have to be talking about an AFC championship game.
01:47Just, I'm not even talking about winning it.
01:49Just get.
01:50But getting to that next level?
01:51Get to the AFC championship game.
01:51Get to somewhere they never got to.
01:53I don't care what CJ Stroud looks.
01:54I don't care what the line looks like.
01:55You don't.
01:56I don't.
01:56So you don't need that and.
01:57Because I'm going to be honest, if they get to the championship game, but I also don't have good feelings
02:01about CJ Stroud in the offense, I'm sick.
02:03How would you feel if CJ Stroud looked like he did last season in the playoffs?
02:08But the defense looks better.
02:09I'd be fine with it.
02:10But they get to the AFC championship game.
02:11I would be fine with it, because then we'd have our.
02:13Absolutely not.
02:14I'm counting them.
02:14What?
02:15I'm counting them.
02:15You want to go through the summer again?
02:16No, no.
02:17I'm counting them with Reggie on this one, man.
02:18That's my point.
02:19No, no.
02:19Here's the reason I landed on that.
02:21I'm sick.
02:22No, I'm not sick.
02:23And here's the reason.
02:24My man wants to see what Dante Moore is looking like next year.
02:27No, no.
02:27Several reasons.
02:28He wants to see what Baker Makefield looks like in the offense.
02:30He wants a quarterback controversy.
02:31That's what you want.
02:32Here's the thing.
02:33Here's the thing.
02:33There won't be one.
02:34There won't be, like, I am greedy in the sense of, again, the last time this city went
02:42to an AFC championship game, I was in high school.
02:46I was in high school.
02:47Did they have buildings yet?
02:48They were wood.
02:50I know that you said city.
02:52Yes.
02:53This franchise has never been to an AFC championship game.
02:55This franchise has never been.
02:56Correct.
02:56The last time this city went, I was in high school.
02:59I'm greedy.
03:00And let me explain the second part of this that you guys are turning your nose up on.
03:05The first part is, just get me to an AFC championship game for my city, for myself,
03:12like being selfish, for the buzz that it would create.
03:15And then I'm willing to take my chances from there.
03:17You talk about, well, I said, I don't, because if you get there, the defense will be as good
03:23if not better than last year.
03:24Right?
03:24That's the only way you get there.
03:26I almost, not even almost, I don't care what CJ would look like at that point.
03:30Because they would be in an AFC championship game, they would have a chance to get to
03:34a Super Bowl, and the answer would be done on CJ.
03:37We wouldn't have to go through this again.
03:39He'll be gone.
03:40No, I know, but he'll be gone and who is in his stead.
03:42And you talk about satisfying.
03:44I am not in a satisfied place if I'm having to figure out who the hell my quarterback is
03:48in that circumstance.
03:49With this defense, I'm not happy about that at all.
03:50I think they would go for a quarterback that is somewhat, you know, ready, you know,
03:54fits the system.
03:55Because the other thing we talk about is CJ doesn't fit the system.
03:58Okay, we'll have our answer.
03:59Let's get a guy in here and we'll be in an AFC championship game.
04:01Yeah, that let's get a guy, you sound like going down to the guy store.
04:04What you mean?
04:05Confidence in what...
04:06This is the thing that, this is like the most difficult thing to find in the NFL.
04:09I'm not looking forward to...
04:10I get it.
04:11No.
04:11I get it.
04:12But confidence in what they could find with this defense and the attraction that this
04:15city would be, this team would be?
04:18That's not a good conversation for me, man.
04:21I'm sorry, man.
04:22I'm sorry.
04:23I will, to me, that sounds like Jacksonville with Blake Bortles.
04:27You know, you got to the AFC championship game and then I want to get to the point where
04:31they are forced to pay CJ.
04:34Like, I don't care if you feel like he's worth it or not.
04:36They won't.
04:36They won't pay him.
04:37Yeah.
04:37But I don't know what quarterback you're going to get that will bring you back to the AFC
04:41championship game, which will probably be the floor at that point if they did make it.
04:45Yes.
04:45Like, what quarterback are we going to get to take you to the Super Bowl?
04:49Because that's what you're going to be looking for.
04:51I'd rather have CJ Stroud look like an MVP and maybe go out in a divisional round.
04:56Get me to the AFC championship.
04:57I'm tired of waiting, man.
04:59I understand that.
05:00Bleep this guy.
05:01Hey, I totally get that.
05:03I totally understand, especially from your point of view.
05:05Yeah.
05:06I just, you know, I don't want to see CJ Stroud playoff type games from last year.
05:11Because here's the other thing.
05:12If they get there and CJ doesn't show any progress, they would have gotten there despite
05:18CJ Stroud.
05:20You're telling me they can't find a quarterback that would be better in this system, you know,
05:25the next year?
05:25I'm not saying that it's not possible.
05:27I'm saying if you're asking me what is satisfying to me, that is far from satisfaction in my life
05:32is having to go through a quarterback controversy or quarterback, you know, finding.
05:36That is never fun.
05:37After losing an AFC championship game.
05:40Never a fun circumstance.
05:42Yeah, not having a known of what this guy is going into the offseason is never a good
05:48feeling.
05:48So that will not be satisfying.
05:49And if you were being greedy, I'm being downright devious with my greed.
05:53I need that AFC championship game burst.
05:56And I need some level of feeling on CJ Stroud is that guy and or Nick Caley knows what the
06:05hell he's doing.
06:06And I mean, like really knows what the hell he's doing, because I think that that is a
06:09part of this that is I'm I'm I know that I'm probably maybe uniquely attached to, which
06:14is I'm just looking at this going.
06:16All right.
06:16They as you mentioned, they can get to an AFC championship game.
06:19And if you tell me, I don't know if I my offensive coordinator is any good and I don't know
06:22if
06:22my quarterback is any good.
06:23I don't feel good.
06:24Like I'm sick to my stomach, even though they are in proximity to getting the thing
06:28done.
06:28You know what I mean?
06:29I would not be because let's say Stroud shows that progress as we talked about to get into
06:34this segment and they get and they are ousted again in the divisional round that I don't
06:39know.
06:39Would that be satisfying to you?
06:40I think it'd be more if I had to pick one or the other.
06:43I'd rather know that I have a quarterback that is a top 10 top seven type quarterback.
06:48100%.
06:49Would he be top seven top 10 or just better?
06:52Well, I mean, we're talking about hypothetical situations.
06:55If you tell me that I can have that or an AFC championship game berth, I think that I'm
06:59taking the knowing that my quote and I know that that sounds sick because again, we are
07:02all to various different degrees waiting on the next time that they can make that step
07:07that you're talking about that you haven't seen since you were in high school.
07:10I feel you.
07:12But I'm just like if we're talking about satisfaction that I get out of the season, obviously
07:16this results need to be there.
07:17But the answers that of the questions that we are asking, the big ones for me are
07:22having that quarterback because that stretches beyond this season or whatever run.
07:26If you have a quarterback that you're sold on, I mean, the really good quarterbacks, because
07:30I'm not even talking about the great ones.
07:32The really good quarterbacks in this league, half decade, decade, you feel good about.
07:35That is a stretch that you feel like you can have with C.J. Stroud.
07:39Go back to 2023 and imagine, think of the feeling that you had when you had that belief
07:43that C.J. Stroud is it.
07:44You're like, the possibilities aren't just for one championship or even in the near term.
07:49The possibilities are we might change what this thing is for a long period of time.
07:52I want that feeling back, big dog.
07:54I want it.
07:54I'm tired of, you know, just wait till next year, man.
07:58I've done that for 36 years.
08:00I get that, man.
08:01I'm tired of it.
08:02Hey, look, I get that, but I can't.
08:04What's your floor?
08:06My floor, and I might be putting too much into it, but my floor would be if C.J. Stroud
08:12looking like an MVP, or I ain't going to say MVP, but franchise quarterback, where you
08:17know you're going to have to pay him and you have no issue paying him, I would be fine if
08:22they come up short in the divisional round, if C.J. Stroud looks like he, you know, was
08:28carrying this team in the playoffs.
08:30I would be fine with that, but I wouldn't be, look, I wouldn't be mad if they make it
08:34to the AFC championship game.
08:36Of course, I'd be happy, but I'd be lying to you if I felt like I was satisfied if C
08:41.J.
08:41Stroud looked like he did against the Patriots.
08:43I will feel, you know, yay, we got to an AFC championship finally, but in the back, you
08:49know that offseason coming of what you going to do with C.J. Stroud, man.
08:53This was not a fun offseason for that.
08:55I don't want that again, man.
08:57Lopez wants to hang the AFC championship game participant banner.
09:01No, I mean, hell no.
09:03That's not even close to true.
09:05I know, but I'm playing with you.
09:06That's not even close to true.
09:07And somebody said, you know, Lopez needs to say who he thinks they could get instead
09:12of C.J.
09:12There isn't one.
09:14I'll wait.
09:14I appreciate your smart assesness on all that.
09:19Appreciate you waiting, too.
09:20But the Seahawks didn't know who they were going to get.
09:24They ended up getting Sam Darnold, and they won a Super Bowl.
09:28Yeah.
09:28Trust the organization if you have that kind of defense.
09:32Do you trust the organization to kind of replace C.J.
09:35Stroud with somebody after they went to the AFC championship game?
09:39Well, C.J.
09:40Stroud was a great draft pick.
09:41We saw that the first year.
09:43The rest of it became system and C.J.
09:46Stroud's between-the-ears factors that have gone off the rails.
09:50I think they would bring in a guy that's more system.
09:52Again, Seattle's the best example.
09:55Oh, boy, what are they going to do at quarterback?
09:56Oh, how about Sam Darnold?
09:58Okay, let's win a Super Bowl.
10:00That's – to say, you know, go to the quarterback store, they do go to the quarterback store.
10:06They do.
10:06If you trust the – if you get to an AFC championship game, you truly are on the brink
10:11of a Super Bowl.
10:13And C.J.
10:13Stroud would not be the answer.
10:15You have to trust him to find that answer and pay for that answer, perhaps.
10:18I just think it's a big gamble, just let's say they do make it to the AFC championship
10:22game.
10:23Yeah.
10:23And C.J.
10:24Stroud, you know, spit the bit or whatever.
10:27Yeah.
10:28That's a big gamble, just getting rid of him and putting somebody else in.
10:31Now the floor is pretty much AFC championship game again in the Super Bowl.
10:35Yes.
10:37I mean, look, I ain't saying go to the quarterback store, but I'm wondering who you going to
10:41get to take – you pretty much – the next person that come in got to take you to the
10:45Super Bowl.
10:45Yes.
10:46I'm just a little worried about that one right there.
10:48Can I be honest?
10:49And also, I don't want to be in the Jacksonville Jaguars position where they had Blake Bortles.
10:53No.
10:54And after the AFC championship game, you paying Blake Bortles, and that messed up your whole
10:59run.
10:59Can I be honest?
11:01For about three minutes now, my brain has just been thinking about what the quarterback store
11:05looks like.
11:05Like, what are the aisles?
11:07Who's on the upper shelves versus the lower shelves?
11:10With the bobbleheads on the –
11:11Hey, where can I find a mobile quarterback?
11:13Oh, that's aisle six.
11:14Yeah.
11:14That's right over there.
11:15That's right over there.
11:15I need a Sam Darnold type.
11:17Oh, it's right up there.
11:19Over there in the back.
11:20It's the end cap.
11:21Oh, the Sam Darnolds, they don't sell over there.
11:24They in that little bucket right there.
11:25Well, Steven Ross, you ain't here again.
11:27You always in here, big dog.
