Seth and Sean dive into some of the top storylines to come out of the Texans' incredible win over the Jaguars.
Transcript
00:00Davis Mills, I think it's as simple as he just needed some reps under live fire.
00:06Because in the fourth quarter, he was really dealing.
00:08He was making good decisions with the ball.
00:11Including tucking and running to play a game-winning touchdown.
00:13And Nico Collins, man.
00:15I mean, he didn't have a perfect game, but my God,
00:20some of the catches he made were catches that only Nico Collins could make.
00:23The two-point conversion.
00:25The two-point conversion.
00:26A lot of it was really impressive.
00:31But some of the ones that were uniquely Nico Collins,
00:34one of the ones where he is getting hit so hard as he's catching the ball.
00:38And defenders are bouncing off of him.
00:40He's just such a freaking Redwood.
00:42The thing that was impressive about the two-point conversion,
00:45as long as we're talking about Nico,
00:46was the simultaneous one-handed catch with getting the feet down and inside the pylon.
00:55Well, and DeAndre Hopkins, like, this is the thing.
00:58I love receivers.
00:59Like, DeAndre Hopkins was really good about this.
01:01Having the awareness that, hey, if I try to clutch the ball with two hands at this point,
01:07it might look like I didn't have control of it.
01:09So he pins it against his body with the one hand.
01:12Yeah.
01:12And it's like something that somebody might look at and think is showboating or something.
01:16Like, DeAndre was awesome at that.
01:18He would just pin it against his body, stop all movement, get the other foot down,
01:22and there you go.
01:23That looks like – that was one of those Nico Collins plays where, in real time,
01:28it looks impossible.
01:29I think from up where we were in the press box,
01:32I don't think I thought it was a reception immediately.
01:33I was just looking to see if he was celebrating and look at the ref.
01:36I thought, yeah, I looked and thought, man, there's no way he did it.
01:38And I don't know how many times I have to make that mistake.
01:40And that pylon cam came in real handy there.
01:43The pylon cam was right – his feet were right in front of him.
01:45Yeah, because even from the other angle, even the field level angle there up close,
01:51you couldn't tell until you saw the pylon camera.
01:53The pylon cam came in handy that time.
01:55All right, so the Texans win 36-29.
01:57We have not mentioned the name Nick Caley yet here in the open.
02:00At least I don't remember if we have.
02:02We have destroyed Nick Caley as a city over the first eight games of the season.
02:08By and large, Nick Caley called the game yesterday.
02:11I thought that for the most part – I mean, the biggest thing that I liked about it
02:17was that he used Nick Chubb and Woody Marks in a way that makes sense.
02:22And they got Woody Marks out on the perimeter.
02:25And they're going to have to continue to devise ways to do that to where there aren't tendencies.
02:29But it ended up being a really good one-two combo of Nick Chubb and Woody Marks.
02:35The other part of it, too, is, all right, I don't know how they're making their personnel decisions
02:40on the offensive line.
02:43They ended up with a group out there that was, again, somehow just really manhandling
02:49the Jaguars' defensive line by the second half of the game.
02:52But I don't know how you go through an entire first half of the season with Juice Scruggs
02:58and Lakin Tomlinson rotating at left guard to a point today where you're down two of your starters
03:05and neither of those two guys are starting the game.
03:08And Jarrett Patterson's at left guard and C.D. Sow is at right guard.
03:11The two guys that you've spent a half season on rotating, you didn't deem worthy to start the game.
03:17And then within two series, Juice Scruggs is back out there.
03:21It makes me – I have zero confidence in an ability to actually assess offensive linemen
03:26or know what to do with them, and yet the guys they ended up with out on the field,
03:30they figured it out and they got it done.
03:31Well, they ended up – yeah, the Sow thing is the big one.
03:34And D'Amico didn't get asked about it in the postgame, and I get it.
03:37It was a win.
03:37So everybody's asking about what the win means and Davis Mills and blah, blah, blah.
03:41He has to get asked about this today at his Monday press conference.
03:44It's like how – C.D. Sow was a practice squad guy, and he did a right guard and was terrible.
03:51Yeah.
03:52He wasn't good.
03:52What were they seeing in practice sit there like –
03:55Yeah, and so I don't want to get – look, it's a Monday after a win.
03:57I don't want to get too caught up in that.
03:59I guess my thing with Kaylee and the offense, I'll say this positively about Kaylee.
04:03Look, you had 400 total yards of offense yesterday.
04:06So you conducted a good ship yesterday.
04:08Absolutely.
04:09I thought he was masterful in how he handled and managed – Kaylee, that is – the final drive,
04:16where it served the dual purpose of getting you a lead and soaking the clock down.
04:20Now, with Cam Little on the other side, 30 seconds is enough to get into field goal range,
04:24and if it weren't for a hands-to-the-face penalty, Cam Little would have had a look at that thing.
04:28So we can't ignore that.
04:29I just don't know moving forward if there's anything I can take –
04:33because they were doing that whole downhill run thing that we laughed at Kaylee about this week
04:37when he was talking about it.
04:38And they were doing it, and I don't know if they're going to be able to do it next week
04:42or the week after that.
04:43Yeah, you know –
04:44They seem to have worn down.
04:45That felt like a very opponent-specific thing yesterday.
04:48It felt old school in the way that – even though you passed way more than you ran yesterday.
04:54But there is an element to – by the fourth quarter, just being on the field a lot is what wears a defense down.
04:59The run game or the pass game, like rushing the passer tires defensive linemen out as well.
05:06And run and play action and boots especially.
05:08They ran boots and sprint outs, and that gets defensive linemen tired.
05:13And those guys were really – those Jaguars defenders were pretty gassed by the end of the game.
05:17And the Texans took advantage of it.
05:18So, yeah.
05:19Full credit to Kaylee for that fourth quarter.
05:22It's a matter of can you replicate this versus better teams.
05:27And really, you replicate it against the Tennessee Titans.
05:31Can you just keep some semblance of continuity going with this this week?
05:35And, you know, CJ Stroud – we'll find out hopefully something about him here in the next couple days,
05:42whether he's going to play or not.
05:43Obviously, that's a huge X factor.
05:44Yep, no doubt about it.
05:46But at its core yesterday was a win that saved the Texans' season.
05:50Four and five, still sitting at the ninth seed in the AFC.
05:53Well, a lot closer.
05:55It was – you know, the two teams ahead of you had two wins more than you.
06:00Now you're sitting at the Chiefs at five and four and the Jaguars at five and four.
06:04You get to – you know, you're going to play one of those teams on the road.
06:07Then you have the Bills above the Jaguars.
06:10You play them as well.
06:11So the Bills more quick here, obviously.
06:15Yeah, yeah.
06:15And you play the Cole twice and you play – the Chargers are ahead of you.
06:18You play them in week 17.
06:20I think the big thing is if you look at this game, if you're trying to look at this glass half full as much as possible
06:27and enjoy the win but also say, okay, like how can I frame this differently?
06:33Those three mistakes early on that knocked you down to 17-0, those are theoretically preventable mistakes.
06:40I mean, Miles Bryant was – I don't – you're not allowed to do that, man.
06:45You're not allowed to carry the football like that.
06:47You're not – you're not –
06:48Tremont Smith.
06:48Excuse me, Tremont Smith.
06:49My apologies to Miles Bryant.
06:51Tremont Smith.
06:52Thanks, Sean.
06:54Like, Tremont Smith, who do you think you are?
06:57Right.
06:57He's carrying a lot of local bread.
06:59You're not that guy.
07:00There's one guy in the history of football that's allowed to do that, and he's not with us anymore, and his name's Walter Page.
07:04You're not allowed to carry the football that way.
07:09You held on the wall to carry the football that way.
07:11That was the other funny thing, too, as long as we're talking about personnel stuff, is – I'm not mad about this.
07:17I was just befuddled.
07:18Like, one kickoff – because there were a lot of kickoffs in the first half to the Texans from the Jags.
07:23One kickoff, it'd be Braxton Berrios and Damian Pierce back there.
07:27The next one would be Jalen Knoll and Tremont Smith and Damian Pierce.
07:31I'd give him a pass on that just because with the new kickoff rules, I think there's so many different ways that they can create different plays and packages.
07:38I mean, you've got linemen out there now in different roles than you used to.
07:43I'm not mad about it.
07:44It's just weird.
07:45Yeah.
07:45They have four guys, and they're rotating.
07:47Yeah, I don't – well, it's weird, especially on a day where the special teams were so discombobulated.
07:53I mean, that was a really – that was a bad day on special teams.
07:56They've got to – they can't do that versus the better teams.
07:59Cannot.
07:59Nope.
08:00All right.
08:01But the Cam Little dynamic, though, that kicker out there, it did – it made the fourth quarter so much more stressful.
08:06The last possession.
08:07I'm like, 30 seconds?
08:08It's too much time.
08:09And you've got Trevor Lawrence scrambling.
08:12I mean, so much of it was deja vu to previous Bo Nixes or Baker Mayfields or whatever.
08:18You have Trevor Lawrence scrambling into field goal position.
08:20Yep.
08:20It was freaking me out seeing that red field goal line, the line to gain at the 50-yard line.
08:26I know.
08:27And realistically, it could have been because that field goal he made last week supposedly would have been good for 72, 73 yards or more than that.
08:35It cleared the crossbar.
08:36I mean, I was sitting there thinking that, man, even when they were at the 45 or so, that might – so that penalty was huge.
08:41The penalty was huge.
08:42Not just because it wiped off the big play, but also knocked them out of Cam Little range.
08:45Yeah.
08:46It was a pass to the right side or for the two-yard line.
08:50But even the line of scrimmage there, I think before that pass, it would have been like a 72-yard field goal.
08:57And the Jaguars would have tried it.
08:58After the scramble.
08:59Yeah, they definitely would have.
09:00So the penalty was a double bonus because it took away the big play that put them in easy field goal range.
09:06And then also knocked them out of Cam Little range.
09:08That's exactly right.
09:09And that forced them to have to throw the ball with Trevor Lawrence with seven seconds left.
09:13And we all know what happens then.
09:14Sheldon Rankins takes it to the house every time.
09:17My fantasy was that it would be a 72-yard field goal attempt with Danico Autry blocking a kick.
09:23Ah, yeah.
09:23But I don't know if they – I mean, they called Danico Autry for that –
09:26The unsportsman.
09:27They call it – yeah, there's leverage or whatever.
09:29Yeah.
09:30So who knows if that would have taken a little pepper out of him.
