Seth and Sean discuss the health issue the Texans have had at Safety this season and react to Tyrann Mathieu saying he'd be up for un-retiring to play for the Texans.
Transcript
00:00Texans came out of that game pretty clean, injury-wise, the Colts game.
00:04Aziz Alshire left the game briefly in the fourth quarter, but he came back in.
00:09The only player that I can recall that left the game, didn't come back in,
00:13was safety Jalen Reed.
00:14It's too bad.
00:15He's been playing pretty well since he's been given a shot here.
00:18Six-round rookie, done some nice things.
00:20An arm injury, which has been reported as he had a plate put in his arm
00:24when he was at Penn State, and I guess something happened.
00:27The plate in his arm broke.
00:28Thanks a lot, James Franklin, for the faulty plate.
00:31No kidding.
00:32What a jerk.
00:33What the hell.
00:34That's why he should have been fired.
00:36I'm just guessing.
00:38Medical professionals, correct me if I'm wrong on this,
00:40I feel like it was probably more something to do with the screw in the plate
00:43that got dislodged or something.
00:47It's hard to break a plate, like a steel plate.
00:50You would think, yeah.
00:51A surgical steel plate.
00:52Unless it's just tin.
00:53You could bend it or something.
00:55Maybe it was some of that COVID steel.
00:56Yeah, maybe.
00:57You know, you're getting all that faulty product.
01:00Supply chain issues and whatnot.
01:01Yeah.
01:03So here was D'Amico Ryan's yesterday with his update on safety Jalen Reed.
01:08With Jalen Reed, we'll see how he continues to progress with the arm injury.
01:13I don't think it's season-ending, so we'll see how he progresses.
01:18Okay.
01:19So not season-ending.
01:20So we got a little bit of transparency from D'Amico there as to the severity of it, at least.
01:24I have no idea, Sean.
01:26I can't tell you what the expected return time from a broken plate is.
01:29Me neither.
01:30How much damage did it do while it was breaking and everything?
01:32Right.
01:33But I do know that the Texans are now down to their fifth-string safety.
01:37So, which is, I mean, that's a little bit of a, you know, all those guys have some versatility
01:42and they can play, you know, different spots in the secondary.
01:45Miles Bryant has a bunch of experience playing.
01:48But it's, you start off thinking at the beginning of the season you're going to have Jimmy Ward
01:53and C.J. Gardner-Johnson back there.
01:56And, you know, at the time we figured C.J. Gardner-Johnson would start.
01:59Jimmy Ward would probably come in off the bench or in certain packages.
02:02By a few weeks into the season you have neither of those guys.
02:05But at least M.J. Stewart's picking up.
02:07Nope, nope, M.J. Stewart's gone.
02:09He's gone for the year.
02:10Okay, yeah, but Jalen Reed comes in.
02:12Yep.
02:12Yeah.
02:15So that's, I mean, that's four bodies.
02:17It's really, if you go down, if you say Kalen Bullock was one of the two starters,
02:21you're down to your sixth string safety, really, by the time you move past that.
02:28It's your sixth option at safety.
02:30Yep, yep.
02:31So, D'Amico was asked, will you go outside the building to go find somebody to play that position?
02:37Yeah, we'll find a way.
02:39We'll find a way.
02:40Now, don't feel like we have to go outside to do that, but we'll find a way.
02:45Okay.
02:45But I am, we'll see.
02:47I mean, that's a big bet on Miles Bryant right there.
02:50Now, the trade market is done.
02:53You can't do anything trade-wise to go get a safety.
02:56You know, if the trade deadline were, you know, December 9th instead of November 9th or whatever it was,
03:03then maybe you do start making some phone calls.
03:05Well, it's not just a bet on Miles Bryant.
03:09It's also the depth.
03:11I mean, you're one injury away from being really, really the tax there on the back end of things.
03:18So, that's the, they have to do something.
03:22Yeah.
03:22They just don't have the numbers right now.
03:24I think they, you've got your practice squad call-ups and everything.
03:28So, I guess they don't have to do something.
03:31But it would feel better if they did, if Tyron Matthew were that guy.
03:35And I get the sense, we'll play Tyron Matthew here in a second.
03:39I get the sense that they don't want it to be Jalen Petrie.
03:42I get the sense that the role that Petrie is in right now is impactful.
03:48And that's where they want, they want him to be doing that thing.
03:51Like, hey, on this play, you're blitzing.
03:52On this play, you're, you know, you're covering.
03:55No, that's fine.
03:56It'll be Miles Bryant.
03:57It's just that you just, but you're just paper thin in your depth.
04:01But, yeah.
04:01Yeah, yeah.
04:02Yeah, no, it'll be Miles Bryant.
04:03I'm saying, like, even in case of emergency, they don't even want, you know,
04:06they want Petrie to be out there doing what he does.
04:08Right.
04:08So, here was, Seth mentioned it, Tyron Matthew was on with Kay Adams on her podcast.
04:16And the topic of him coming back, he's retired now.
04:19He retired after last season.
04:21He last played for the New Orleans Saints.
04:24He's retired.
04:25I think he's getting into broadcasting, but he was asked by Kay Adams about the possibility of coming back.
04:29He said, yeah, maybe I'll come back if it could be for a team like this.
04:32I do know this.
04:34The Texas, the Texas, the way the Texas play defense.
04:39You...
04:39Man, listen, I'll come back to play for a defense like that.
04:42Okay.
04:43Hold on.
04:44All I'm getting here, I want to take a break, and I want to talk about Lane Kiffin, of course.
04:47All I'm getting is you're ready to come back.
04:50What is that?
04:50Are you ready to come back?
04:52I mean, for the right situation, who wouldn't?
04:54You know what I mean?
04:55People who have retired wouldn't.
04:56I love this game, so I'm like...
04:58Tyron wants to come back to the NFL.
05:01Let's go.
05:02This is huge news.
05:04This is very exciting.
05:05Hey, it's crazy.
05:06I knew you were not really retired.
05:07Not really retired.
05:08I mean, I don't believe you're retired.
05:10Frank Rag, now I'm looking at you.
05:11My criticism earlier of Kay Adams, who I think does a tremendous job, I think she's really
05:16good at what she does.
05:18My criticism earlier was she didn't ask directly the question, are you in playing shape right
05:24now?
05:24You know, have you been working out?
05:26She did ask, are you ready to come back?
05:27Maybe that's as close as she was going to get to asking what exactly his workout regimen
05:32has been, but as I'm listening to him say this, I'm like, okay, I mean, we're getting
05:36down to it here, to where whatever version of Tyron Matthew played in New Orleans last
05:41year could easily get on the field for the Houston Texans.
05:43I guess the other part was in the way that she asked it, I mean, it was almost like she
05:48asked him if you wanted to go watch a movie, and he was like, oh yeah, sure, I'm up for
05:51a movie.
05:52Sure, but it's a Marvel movie.
05:54Yeah.
05:54He hadn't been focused in on it.
05:55You know, he's not waiting in line at the premiere to get into the next Star Wars or
06:00something.
06:01So that's the part that's unclear, is whether, was that a serious, yeah, I would love to
06:07come back, or was it, yeah, you're asking me, sure, I'd love to come back, but no, not
06:12really.
06:13You know what this reminds me of?
06:14Remember when Aaron Rodgers flew all the way across the country to go meet Aaron Glenn and
06:19the Jets?
06:20Yeah.
06:20And he was talking about how intense Aaron Glenn was, and he was getting up in his face,
06:24and he's like, do you want to play football?
06:26And Aaron Rodgers was like, yeah, sure.
06:28Yeah.
06:30That's what this feels like.
06:31I feel like we're not matching energies here.
06:32That's what it feels like.
06:33Yeah.
06:34So.
06:34I think Tyron Matthew probably, I mean, the idea of playing for the Texans, I'm sure he
06:38finds enticing.
06:40Yeah.
06:40Did he, as he actually, this is kind of like JJ Watt saying that he'd be open to coming
06:44back, but it wasn't the right circumstance, or maybe when he really sat down long and hard
06:49and thought about it, like, no, I don't want to go through that again.
06:52Tyron Matthew might be at that same spot.
06:54You know, the Texans are trying to become the only team this century, other than the
06:592018 Houston Texans, to come back from an 0-3 start to make the postseason.
07:04So if they're able to do that, it would be just this year's Texans and 2018 Texans.
07:09JJ Watt and Tyron Matthew were on that 2018 team.
07:12So maybe they want to make sure that they're on every team that's made it back from an 0-3
07:18start to make the postseason.
07:19They don't want to be left out, like, no, no, no, I don't want to, I don't want to say
07:23I played for just this one team.
07:24I want to be on both of them.
07:25There is this other minor detail, and it's this, that Tyron Matthew didn't play all that
07:31well last year.
07:32So, yeah.
07:33Yeah, so, I mean, there's more to it than just like, hey, here we go.
07:38But, now, it was for the Saints, and environment matters, and with the Texans, and just being
07:45able to use them in spot duty, or as an emergency backup, or whatever, that's a whole different
07:49deal than relying on them to be your starter and team captain.
07:52It is funny, because my first thing is like, okay, is what the Saints got last year out of
07:58him better than Miles Bryant, and the answer is I don't really know.
08:02I didn't watch a ton of Saints football last year.
08:04Why?
08:05Yeah, exactly.
08:06So, I don't know the answer to that.
08:08The thing is, they, I mean, they put like a 100% snap count on Miles Bryant when he's
08:15out there replacing guys.
08:16You know, like, I don't know that a guy who's been on the couch all year comes in, and you're
08:21right, he'd be more of a piece, probably, than, you know, just a replacement piece, than
08:25a front-line guy.
08:26Eric Weddle came back out of retirement in 2022 after not playing in the regular season
08:33to join the Rams for their Super Bowl run, ended up winning a Super Bowl.
08:39That's another pretty big enticement for a guy like Tyron Matthew, is to go on a potential
08:43Super Bowl run, obviously, and with the style of play that they have.
08:46But Weddle had played well in his final season, except he only played like 200 snaps.
08:54He'd gotten injured, and he was well into his career.
08:57The other guy, I guess, the relevant guy that I thought of was Eric Reed, because, or
09:01excuse me, Ed Reed.
09:03When Ed Reed came in, he did not play well for the Texans.
09:06He was at the end of his career.
09:07But that same season, he went to go play for the Jets, and he played much better.
09:11So, yeah.
09:13It's reminding me of C.J.
09:14Gardner-Johnson now.
09:15See, Ed Reed only played eight seasons?
09:18Ed Reed only?
09:19No.
09:19No, no.
09:20He played, Ed Reed played more than eight seasons.
09:21Oh, no, you know what?
09:22No, no, he didn't.
09:22Never mind.
09:23I looked at it.
09:23I looked at this.
09:24I was like, that can't be right.
09:25But no, it was a, it was a different spread.
09:27Yeah, yeah, yeah.
09:30I was, I found that shocking 30, 33 seconds ago when I saw it, and I should have, I should
09:35have listened to my internal shocker meter.
09:37Yeah, yeah.
