Seth and Sean discuss the top teams who could win a Super Bowl this coming season in the same way the Seahawks managed to do it, and why the Texans are absolutely a team that could do that.
Transcript
00:00can the texans seahawk their way to a super bowl championship that's the question five teams who
00:07could make a seahawks like surprise run to the super bowl this is uh tom blair seth of he is
00:14a
00:14special projects lead for nfl.com oh a special project oh that sounds like a fun job like
00:21secret project kind of thing you know like what hey we're working on this top secret thing
00:26that sounds like somebody who's expendable though that's uh yeah i know the way the nfl once you've
00:32run out of special projects yeah yeah bye bye blair uh but for now he's doing a special project
00:38called five teams that could make a seahawks like surprise run to the super bowl he's got some
00:43pretty specific criteria for it the rules in fact he says the rules to be eligible teams had to meet
00:50two basic criteria all right do the do the texans meet these basic criteria for you seth before i
00:55spoil it for everybody yeah uh you would not do a double take if they made the playoffs oh yeah
01:01they made the playoffs the last three years yeah number two i would do a double take or maybe even
01:06a spit take if they won 14 plus games and coasted to victory in super bowl 61 well coasted to
01:15victory
01:15and let's remember the seahawks didn't like i think people are rewriting history a little bit in the way
01:21that super bowl went i did you feel like the seahawks coasted to victory i felt like they were
01:25clearly the better team in that they were the better team but it was a darnold's darnold could
01:30have easily thrown three interceptions in that game in the first half yeah like it was it was
01:36rough sledding for the for the seahawks offense well and in the second half the patriots had the ball
01:41down one score in the second half they gave the patriot i mean the seahawks built a big lead
01:45patriots right back yeah i just never felt like they coasted to victory no no necessarily no because
01:51they needed an interception in like in the third quarter of that game just to keep the patriots at
01:55bay yeah you know it wasn't a blowout from start to finish or something no no but i thought the
01:59seahawks were clearly the better team so anyway but if they uh if they if they if they win the
02:05super
02:05bowl yeah do a spit take i don't i don't think i think that i don't know if the texans
02:10are a bunch
02:10of other teams qualify in that because it's the modern nfl but so yeah we'll go with that sure
02:15cool um the texans not only qualify they are number one on the list of teams that could seahawk
02:22their way to a super bowl next year yeah there's there's three things that he's kind of rating these
02:27teams on once they've gotten inside the velvet rope of spit takes and whatnot um the the starting
02:33quarterback's ability to kind of their sam darnold score like how much do they need to elevate
02:38their game in order to get their team help get their team to a super bowl see on a scale
02:42of one
02:42to ten cj stroud score is a six for what it's worth um that cj stroud needs to elevate his
02:48game
02:48in order to the way darnold did last year darnold wasn't the best quarterback in the league but he
02:53was the best version of himself for sure last year yeah and getting them to a super bowl he says
02:57stroud's numbers have slipped the last two seasons last time we saw him he delivered one of the worst
03:02performances of his career against the patriots is he a franchise qb or was will his next
03:08deal come with a bet hedging early out for the team yeah so with uh with sam darnold okay is
03:15cj
03:15capable of delivering a performance the way sam darnold did this year i mean a lot of that
03:20credit to clint kubiak the offensive coordinator and jackson smith and jigba to an extreme degree
03:26that sam darnold was in mvp conversations for a while um yeah if the circumstances were the same
03:33around cj that they were around darnold last year i don't think that's uh that's not that's not a
03:38pie in the sky notion or anything that's not me putting cj up in the hall of fame or anything
03:43yeah i think he's i think he's very capable we've seen him do it you know we've seen it this
03:48isn't
03:48speculation like we've seen it now he was the worst version of himself at the end of the year last
03:52year that's the biggest thing to me is how does he recover from that you know is it's easy still
03:56carrying the the other thing do they have a dark side like in a good way uh like the defense
04:01for
04:01seattle like that that's a bunch of killers um i would say yes i would say they're very similar
04:08those two defenses are very similar in a lot of regards in terms of performance and mindset and all
04:13of that so yeah they're uh they're very much that way yeah i would say so too he says they
04:18texans defense ranked first in epa per play fifth in yards per play allowed um and and i would
04:24add he doesn't say this in here blair but i would say that they've taken the parts of that defense
04:30that maybe were you know weaknesses or achilles heels last year and they've addressed them they
04:36went got re-blankenship to play safety and they drafted caden mcdonald in the draft i think and i
04:42know you'll point out that they still have some work to do on the depth like if they really want
04:46to
04:46continue to pound teams like they did last year with their pass rush uh they are right now probably
04:52deficient in those 20 or 25 percent of snaps that will anderson and daniel hunter aren't going to
04:57take yeah yeah the edge rushing uh they when you rotate your defensive lineman through you want to
05:03have uh more than just a couple of stud pass rushers on the edge and uh it remains to be
05:08seen whether
05:08the guys that are currently on the roster are going to be those guys and how they'll do or if
05:12they
05:13just if they bring in somebody from the outside bottom line it might seem a bit like cheating to
05:18include a team that already won 12 games last season but they've never gone farther than the
05:22divisional round they've never finished higher than a three seed if stroud and the offense can
05:26up their game and the defense stays elite the texans could truly separate themselves from the
05:30typical afc south fray and roll into the postseason with some with some real momentum i i do think that
05:36the texans if you look at the blueprint for the seahawks last year i do think the texans are uh
05:40if they
05:40can get the run game going you know if the offensive line acquisitions they've made are what they
05:45envisioned them being i think they can and with david montgomery i think they can run with a
05:49really physical running style like they did with kenneth walker last year and i think cj certainly
05:54has a ceiling that's comparable to what sam darnold gave the seahawks last year and the defense is the
06:00least of the things i'm worried about they i think they belong number one on this list if this is
06:04just
06:04if we're talking purely about getting to and winning a super bowl in a certain kind of way i think
06:09that's
06:09the way for the texans probably yeah i i think the i mean the offense like this is we could
06:15talk about
06:16this as we have for a long long time i mean that's the bit the biggest leap is the offense
06:20in general
06:21which includes cj uh can they can they get up to the not they don't have to be the same
06:26caliber as
06:27the defense yeah but can they be up can they be a functioning like at times impressive offense
06:34versus good defenses and with everything else that comes with that i mean it's just i that's the
06:39biggest leap by far yeah it's like the offense wasn't anywhere near what you needed to be the to
06:45to win a super bowl last year it was going to be one of those it would have been one
06:48of those rare
06:48exceptions of teams that let were led to a super bowl victory by their defense in their defense alone
06:55yep and those are exceedingly rare there's only a few teams that have done that this century
06:59um to have a genuinely good offense that's a that's a big leap from last year the other four
07:05teams for what it's worth because i know some of you are wondering to make the top five vikings two
07:09chargers three bears four bangles five which is interesting because their defense isn't anywhere
07:15near in the neighborhood like that that'd be the opposite of seahawking your way to a super bowl
07:20they're gonna have to lean on i know they picked up dexter lawrence but they're gonna have to lean on
07:23joe burrow to throw for 5 000 yards and 50 touchdowns to win a super bowl i don't know how
07:28they make
07:28that list but whatever um tj hushman zada a regular guest on emmanuel ocho's youtube channel
07:34the speakeasy actually talked about both these things we just talked about with the texans here
07:38was tj hushman zada former receiver in the nfl and so he's someone that cj cj's got a relationship
07:45with him right seth yeah he talks about it in this clip or at least he should yep here he
07:48goes this is
07:49tj hushman zada on cj stroud and he's gonna have to play now like a big guy ben sorry yeah
07:55he started
07:55off this talking about how he had a long conversation with cj stroud um but that he
08:00kept he's gonna keep that conversation quiet and then he went into lambasting the offensive
08:05coordinator after he talked about how he had a long conversation yeah he's gonna keep it quiet
08:09this will be the most boring cut we're about to play of all time well this is so he's saying
08:13i'm
08:13not gonna talk about what i talked about with cj but i am gonna bring up what i think's wrong
08:17with
08:18the offensive coordinator for the texans yeah he's gonna have to play now like a big dog because
08:24of the way that season ended it was as if well if we had anybody else at quarterback we would
08:31have
08:31won this game and he knows that he knows that it's not like he's talking like oh he knows that
08:37and so i look forward to seeing how he gonna respond because the work i see it the the angst
08:48in
08:48the voice you can hear it when it's just like ah because when you don't play well it hurts you
08:54yeah
08:54yeah but you also know it hurts you because you letting other people down like when the locker room
09:02with you you let them down that bothers you as a when you're a true competitor and these
09:07dudes really get down with you like that you know you let them down and so uh i'm eager to
09:13see how
09:13this is gonna turn out okay all right that was the wrong clip for me by me that's my bad
09:17i'm sorry
09:17um uh i'll get ben the other clip uh then oh i pulled that one oh you did okay all
09:23right i thought
09:24that maybe i had just i've got my own clips and gotcha um yeah no that part of it is
09:29cj having
09:29accountability for it and everything is a hundred percent he also cj who's from zada went into
09:36all the different ways that nick kaylee let uh cj stroud down in that game with his play calling
09:41i have not heard that one i only yeah and it's um and it's really it's kind of annoying because
09:46he doesn't acknowledge the weather factor or the fact that the texans couldn't run the ball at all
09:51in that game so he's saying why isn't he getting these short passes these easier passes etc etc they
09:57they had 25 plus short passing attempts in that game cj was missing on a lot of them yeah he
10:03was
10:03throwing two sixes on other ones like it was just he almost got cade stover a non-contact knee
10:09injury well and this is a and i'm not sick enough for nick hayley and saying he couldn't have called
10:14a
10:14better game it's that yeah for if you're inclined to make excuses for cj or explanations for cj i'm
10:21100 cool with that i've done it myself but those same things apply to the offensive coordinator
10:27too and in that game where there was no nico collins where dalton schultz got injured you're
10:33kind of limited in what your options are especially when you're facing a wintry mix in ridiculous weather
10:39conditions that any excuse you want to make for cj most of them also apply to nick kaylee and if
10:46you
10:46go into the beginning of last season i think we even forget this here locally is that you go into
10:53the
10:53game the season and i think that the texans offense was going to be tight ends heavy and you were
11:00going
11:00to have joe mix in at running back if you're going into training camp and you end up in a
11:04situation
11:05where two of your top three tight ends are on ir to begin the year and you didn't have healthy
11:10you
11:10didn't have three healthy tight ends or viable tight ends the entire season and you also were making do
11:15with a rookie undersized running back and nick freaking chubb as your running backs yeah that yeah you're
11:21kind of limited in what you can do so if i'm going to make any excuse i would make for
11:26cj i'll also
11:27make for first year offensive coordinator nick kaylee they were they were hamstrung to a pretty big degree
11:33in what they could and could not do including the personnel they had on the offensive line
11:37yep um someone's asking what station is the rockets game on tonight it's on prime the game streams
11:44tonight amazon amazon prime tonight buddy yep and then the game seven will not be i don't know what
11:50network it's going to be on but it will be on tv it won't be on it won't be streaming
11:54on prime uh if
11:55they make a game seven one point that goodell made in defending the current way that they you know do
12:01streaming and everything is that the local team the two local teams it's that that game is always
12:07available on normal television yeah which i thought was a good point that he should have leaned into he
12:12just uh like that's uh if you know you have to pay extra if you want to watch people from
12:17outside
12:17your market yep but in the nba and in baseball it's not that way right you just or is it
12:22in the
12:22playoffs i don't know can you watch it locally that's a good i have prime so i didn't even look
12:26into it i'm not baseball it's baseball it's not that way nope in the regular season it is not it
12:31is not
12:31máximo quello it's not the game but though you have me to touch on television it's a good idea okay
