00:00According to Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, the widely reported conversation that he had with U.S. President Donald Trump was centered around diplomacy.
00:10Diplomacy, he says, he learned from being a foreign affairs minister serving under the Hugo Chavez administration.
00:16He reveals why he remained silent on the matter until now, saying...
00:21I like discretion. I don't like microphone diplomacy.
00:26When there are important things, in silence, they have to be until they come through.
00:36I received a call and talked with U.S. President Donald Trump.
00:42I can say that the conversation was in a tone of respect.
00:47I can even say that it was cordial.
00:49President Maduro says, if the tone of the call represents that steps toward respectful dialogue are being taken between the U.S. and Venezuela, then it is a welcome move.
01:02President Maduro has expressed hope for a peaceful resolution moving forward, further outlining his stance.
01:31I believe that the road of the people of the U.S. and the people of Venezuela has to be a path of respect, of diplomacy, and dialogue.
01:42So that, that's all I am going to say.
01:47Because you know me, I like discretion, respect, and with God's favor and our commander, our Lord Jesus Christ, all will come out good for peace, independence, the dignity, and the future of Venezuela.
02:05When asked about the call between himself and President Maduro shortly after it transpired, President Trump told foreign media that he didn't want to comment on it, saying, quote,
02:17I wouldn't say it went well or badly. It was a phone call, end quote.
02:21The U.S. continues to have its vessels of war in the Caribbean, alleging a fight against narco-trafficking, but with some speculating that it's about regime change and Venezuela's oil reserves.
