Who is running Venezuela? Well according to US President Donald Trump, America will oversee things until such time as new leadership is put in place, and Venezuela's Vice-President Delcy Rodriguez will facilitate the transition. However Rodriguez has pushed back, saying Maduro remains the only true President of Venezuela. Rynessa Cutting reports.
00:00Following the U.S. strike in Venezuela, which saw Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife captured in the wee hours of this morning,
00:09U.S. President Donald Trump had a press conference where he announced that the United States will be temporarily running the country.
00:17So we are going to run the country until such time as we can do a safe, proper and judicious transition.
00:25And it has to be judicious because that's what we're all about.
00:31We want peace, liberty and justice for the great people of Venezuela.
00:36And that includes many from Venezuela that are now living in the United States and want to go back to their country.
00:45Trump swore to make Venezuela great again and claimed that Venezuela's vice president would facilitate the process.
00:52Who's going to take over? I mean, there is nobody to take over.
00:57You have a vice president who's been appointed by Maduro and right now she's the vice president and she's, I guess, the president.
01:04She was sworn as president just a little while ago.
01:07She had a long conversation with Marco and she said, we'll do whatever you need.
01:13I think she was quite gracious, but she really doesn't have a choice.
01:17However, in what appears to be a direct rebuttal, Rodriguez has demanded the immediate release of Maduro and his wife, stressing that he is the only true president of Venezuela.
01:29Exigimos la inmediata liberación del presidente Nicolás Maduro y de su esposa Cilia Flores.
01:39Único presidente de Venezuela, el presidente Nicolás Maduro.
01:44But the U.S. president has made it clear that more strikes are a possibility.
01:48We're going to have our very large United States oil companies, the biggest anywhere in the world, go in, spend billions of dollars, fix the badly broken infrastructure, the oil infrastructure, and start making money for the country.
02:08And we are ready to stage a second and much larger attack if we need to do so.
02:17It remains to be seen what happens next.
02:21Meantime, Prime Minister Kamala Posada-Bissasa took to ex with the following post.
02:26Trinidad and Tobago looks forward to renewed cooperation and the strengthening of our long-standing friendship with the people of Venezuela in the coming years.
02:35May God guide and protect them as they transition away from years of oppression and dictatorship onto a new pathway towards democracy, justice, and prosperity.
