Observers from Trinidad and Tobago who were in Venezuela for that country's presidential election are speaking out.


Almost five weeks after their return, they are calling on the international community to accept the results of the July polls and Nicholas Maduro as President of the South American country.

00:00The Movement for Social Justice says what happens in Venezuela is important for the rest of the region.
00:07The Caribbean must remain a zone of peace.
00:10And that is critical, especially when we consider the stability of our key neighbors.
00:18And it is therefore in the interest of the Caribbean and certainly in the interest of Trinidad and Tobago
00:24that Venezuela remains stable to guarantee the Caribbean as a zone of peace.
00:30Representatives were sent to Venezuela as part of a team of international observers for the recent presidential election.
00:38As we speak about these issues and we look at other countries and the way they express themselves democratically,
00:46we can learn from that and we could strengthen our processes so that more comes from the people of Trinidad and Tobago
00:57and less from the top come down.
01:00It was extremely eye-opening.
01:05We were able to go into all of the voting stations to look at people voting.
01:11Venezuela has held 31 elections in the past 25 years.
01:16Nicolás Maduro will have been supported by 13 different organizations.
01:22And this tells me that the support from amongst the people on the ground or within communities will have been very strong.
01:33So it will have been very difficult for anybody, anyone to really defeat Nicolás Maduro.
01:40My view, the election was free and fair and we are calling on the international community to really accept the election.
