A tough warning tonight for motorists heading into the capital. Port of Spain City Corporation resumed its wrecking operations, and within hours, several drivers paid the price. As the city expands its enforcement programme, officials say the goal is order — not revenue. Urvashi Tiwari Roopnarine has more.

00:00like the saying goes check yourself before you wreck yourself it's just about noon and already
00:11several motorists in the capital will force to shell out hundreds of dollars to retrieve
00:17their vehicles after being caught parking indiscriminately across port of Spain
00:22the active activity operation here this morning around 10 years thus so far we have wrecked 10 vehicles
00:28we want to urge the public to please utilize the parking facilities around the city
00:36there are plenty of parking facilities available within the city so they're going to go through this exercise
00:42and we're going to pay 500 hours to this in order to retrieve the vehicle
00:48port of spain mayor chinwa alane says the first phase of the program focused on west port of
00:54spain where impounded cars were taken to dock road but to expand the operation the south key
01:01impound lot located just opposite courts needed additional investment and preparation
01:07last financial year through our development program we use our resources
01:18to be able to build a police force here to support not just parking enforcement in the city of port of
01:24spain but also to support the deployment of officers from the city police or from the other national
01:30security agencies to be able to deploy from this space the mayor stresses this is not a cash grab system
01:37which many on social media claim but it is a necessary enforcement tool given the chaos caused by illegal
01:44parking we frequently get complaints from the ptsc that buses are stopped stopped on the street corners
01:51that they can pass we get complaints from the fire service that their appliances are not able to
01:56traverse the city just as we were making our way to this facility we witnessed an ambulance struggling to
02:03make its way across independent square north and the taxi drivers in particular have reached out to us by way of
02:09phone call by letter we have meetings with different taxi driver associations they are complaining that
02:15the taxi stands are being used as parking lots and they are not able to apply the trade city officials
02:21are urging workers and visitors to make use of the various paid parking facilities across port of spain
02:27we have in the past received correspondence from music court relative to the parking uh on richmond street
02:34uh and the indiscriminate parking that is happening in the city of the parking so that we are aware that as
02:40people park indiscriminately there are legal parking spaces available that we cannot make use of uh that is not
02:47necessarily the focus of our initiative the focus we need here is ensuring the safety and security of the
02:53motoring and traveling public in particular street quarters by hydrants pedestrian process but still
02:59the clampdown caught some off guard including this bank worker who parked in the wrong place i did park
03:07somewhere with a new parking sign initially but when i realized that i did move my car closer to my job
03:13because i thought it would have been safer but i guess not um so yeah i still get wrecked still here first
03:20christmas time who has actually 500 to just jump out to get back to their own car but i mean it is what
03:26it is right now with a newborn she says the inconvenience will definitely affect her routine
03:35try to reach early on gap better park i don't know i i did ask and they said if we can't find
03:41parking on the streets you have to utilize paid car parks but is that an option for you realistically no
03:48because these car boxes are not very pricey already lighting towers have been installed to ensure
03:54vehicles are properly secured at the impound lot for now only cash is accepted but by weeks and
04:02drivers will also be able to pay via links and a final warning for motorists this crackdown
04:09isn't just for the christmas season the operation will continue straight through to carnival
