00:48Hi, welcome to my travel room
01:01I love to travel, so I decided to fill this room with things that reminded me of all the places that I visited and the different ways that I got there.
01:03You name it, if it has to do with leaving one place and going to another, I've probably got it here.
01:18But you know what I really love? I love maps. All kinds of maps. Each one tells me something different about the world. Like this antique map I've got here. It actually shows the world as though it were flat.
01:33And this globe is a map of the world that you can take for a spin. There's a map for just about any place you're interested in going.
01:46Maps can tell you a lot, but they can't tell you the whole story. If you really want to experience a new place, you have to go there. Like my friend Mrs. Tilby in this book.
02:03Someplace else.
02:20Someplace else.
02:24By Carol P. Saul.
02:28Illustrated by Barry Root.
02:32All her life, Mrs. Tilby had lived in the white house by the apple orchard.
02:42All her life, Mrs. Tilby had tended the trees and picked and sold apples.
02:49All her life, Mrs. Tilby wondered how it would be to live someplace else.
02:59One morning, Mrs. Tilby came downstairs and spoke to her son, Wes.
03:05All my life, I've wondered how it would be to live someplace else.
03:11And now is the time for me to try.
03:14Tomorrow, I'm leaving to visit your brother Les in the big city. If it suits me, I'll stay.
03:24The next day, Mrs. Tilby put her suitcase in the back of the old green truck.
03:31Then Mrs. Tilby drove off down the road.
03:41Mrs. Tilby pulled up in front of Les' apartment house.
03:45It was 40 stories high.
03:50Welcome to the city, Mother, said Les.
03:54I know you're going to love it here.
03:58Mrs. Tilby was happy in the city.
04:01She went to museums and theaters and restaurants.
04:08But after a few weeks, she wanted to move on.
04:15I can see why you love city life, Les, said Mrs. Tilby.
04:20But it doesn't feel like home to me.
04:24So I want to try living someplace else.
04:29Tomorrow, I'm leaving to visit your sister Tess at the seashore.
04:35If it suits me, I'll stay.
04:39Tess's house stood on stilts at the edge of the ocean.
04:46Welcome to the seashore, Mother, said Tess.
04:51You'll just love it here.
04:54Mrs. Tilby did like the ocean.
04:58She spent hours gathering shells with her grandchildren.
05:04At night, the sound of the waves lulled her to sleep.
05:13But after a few weeks, she needed to move on.
05:19I understand why you love living by the shore, Tess, said Mrs. Tilby.
05:26But it doesn't feel like home to me.
05:31So tomorrow, I'm leaving to visit your brother Jackson in the mountains.
05:37If it suits me, I'll stay.
05:42Jackson's house sat on the edge of a cliff.
05:47Welcome to the mountains, Mother.
05:51Jackson shouted.
05:53You're gonna love it here.
05:58Mrs. Tilby loved the mountains and the smell of pine that filled the air.
06:05Jackson's wife, Bess, taught her to ski.
06:10But after a few weeks, she felt like moving on.
06:15I know why you love the mountains, Jackson, said Mrs. Tilby.
06:20But it just doesn't feel like home to me.
06:24I'm leaving tomorrow.
06:26But where will you go?
06:28I don't know, dear, said Mrs. Tilby.
06:31There must be someplace else.
06:35She tried living in lots of places.
06:39She stayed in a cabin by a lake and in a fire tower high above a forest.
06:47She stayed in an adobe hut in the middle of the desert.
06:53She even spent time on a riverboat.
06:58And everywhere she went, it was the same.
07:02Mrs. Tilby was always happy at first.
07:06But after a few weeks, she always wanted to move on.
07:13One morning, Mrs. Tilby set off back toward the apple orchard
07:18when she saw a shiny silver trailer.
07:24For sale, read the sign in the window.
07:28Mrs. Tilby leaped out of the old green truck
07:31and asked to see the inside of the trailer.
07:35It had a cozy bedroom, a tiny bathroom,
07:40and a kitchen that folded out of sight.
07:44Mrs. Tilby bought it on the spot.
07:50Now, every few weeks, Mrs. Tilby sets off in the old green truck
07:56with the shiny silver trailer attached behind.
08:01Sometimes, she visits less in the city.
08:05Or Tess at the seashore.
08:09Or Jackson and Bess in the mountains.
08:14Sometimes, she stays in other places.
08:17And in the autumn, she goes back to the White House by the orchard
08:23to help Wess pick and sell apples.
08:28Mrs. Tilby is always home.
08:33And she is always someplace else.
08:38Mrs. Tilby could probably use a map collection of her own.
08:46In the meantime, mine keeps growing.
08:49All of my friends know that I'm a map maniac,
08:52so whenever they come across an interesting one,
08:55they send it to me.
08:56And I think that's what's inside of here.
09:05I don't know what kind of map could be inside of this box.
09:14Wow.
09:15It's a puzzle map of the United States.
09:22And it's huge.
09:24Look at this.
09:26This is the northeast corner of the United States.
09:34It's a pop-up map.
09:36I love it.
09:38And this would be New York City.
09:46Tall buildings.
09:49Traffic jams.
09:52Crowds of people.
09:54Street music.
09:55Street music.
09:56These are the sights and sounds of the city.
09:58It's a place with so much energy,
10:00it feels almost aligned.
10:02And that's what makes so many people want to live here.
10:10But city lovers sometimes need a place they can go
10:12to escape all of that nonstop action.
10:14Someplace high above all the noise and the crowds.
10:18And the crowds.
10:19My name is Val Gehry and here in New York City I garden on my rooftop.
10:28I've been interested in gardening since I was a little girl.
10:29When I grew up I came to New York City and the question was where I could grow things.
10:34The answer was the rooftop.
10:35The answer was the rooftop.

11:18It's as soft as a lamb's ear.
11:20Very furry.
11:21Both sides.
11:22The special thing about gardening on a rooftop is you have to grow everything in soil which
11:36you try and make as light as possible so containers don't get so heavy that they maybe go straight
11:41through the roof and land in somebody's living room.
11:51music.
11:52Everybody needs a special place and this rooftop garden is mine.

12:23As a kid growing up in this neighborhood, they had a lot of pigeon coops on the roof.
12:36So there's a little youngster in the street looking up all the time.
12:40I too wanted to fly birds.
12:42music.
12:43These pigeons here are not your regular street pigeons.
12:47These are tiplets, baldies, birmingham, red tiger flights, blue tiger flights, silver
12:54flies, black baldies, red tiplets, silver tiplets.
12:57There's all kinds of birds, Russian trumpeters, Russian high flyers, turbans, black turbans,
13:02yellow turbans, owls, silver owls, yellow tigers, black danishes, red danishes.
13:07You have it all, I have them.
13:12I was born to raise birds.
13:14I, uh, I raise them for their beauty.
13:19And, as you can see, they're lovable.
13:24My favorite spot up here.
13:26music.
13:27music.
13:28music.
13:29music.
13:3030 years ago, in Crusher Street.
13:33It's amazing that 30 years later I'm still flying birds.
13:37Great hobby.
13:38Great hobby.
13:39I think all the kids in the neighborhood should start doing this.
13:43music.
13:44Isn't that beautiful?
13:48music.
13:51When I see them up there, in that beautiful blue sky, the feeling of being free, that's
13:58what makes me feel good.
14:04music.
14:09I guess I'll be flying birds for the rest of my life.
14:13Flying pigeons on the rooftops.
14:16But there's no trouble.
14:18It's nice and peaceful.
14:20The sun is shining.
14:22And everything is beautiful.
14:24music.
14:33Some people call their city rooftops, tar beaches.
14:36And they wouldn't trade that stone and cement of the city for any place in the world.
14:41But for others who live near the sea, there is nothing to replace the sound of waves crashing
14:46on a rocky shore.
14:48Or the sight of a beautiful schooner like the Heritage setting sail.
14:54It takes a lot of folks to run a giant schooner like the Heritage.
15:07And everyone lends a hand.
15:09The Lees are a sailing family.
15:31Doug is the master of the ship.
15:34He plots the course, making sure the ship steers clear of danger and stays in the channel.
15:40You want to go on this course right like that.
15:42Right up to the TV boy from the Rockland Lighthouse.
15:47We'll go down east.
15:49That speeds 90 degrees on the compass.
15:52Steer 90 degrees, Linda.
15:54Okay.
15:55Got it.
15:56Don't pull.
16:00Don't pull.
16:04When it's time to guide the Heritage out of port.
16:06Come on.
16:07Come on.
16:08Linda, Rachel and Clara crew the yawl boat.
16:13A little powerhouse that pulls the Heritage out of the harbor.
16:18That way a little bit.
16:20They carefully watch for other ships.
16:23That way.
16:27Stop.
16:28Okay.
16:29Let's get the yawl boat under the stern.
16:32Yep.
16:33Okay.
16:34We're going to pull on this line right over there.
16:36We need a bunch of people pulling in line.
16:37There you go, Mike.
16:38Come on under the stern, Linda.
16:43Big hands or little.
16:45Everyone's job is really important on a big schooner.
16:48Did you make that fast, buddy?
16:49Yep.
16:50During the summer months, the Lee family makes the heritage their home.
16:55Sailing is their way of life.
16:59Just look at all of this coastline.
17:15There are plenty of places for people to go if they want to live near the seashore.
17:20Then again, if water doesn't turn you on, but mountains pique your interest, then the
17:25biggest are always found out west.
17:28Personally, when it comes to mountains, my favorites can be found even further west in Hawaii.
17:34The mountains aren't just mountains.
17:37They're volcanoes.
17:41The Hawaiian islands were actually formed by volcanoes spitting out molten rock from inside
17:47the earth.
17:48In fact, some are still active today.
17:51Every time Kilauea erupts, the island grows and changes.
17:56It's like a work in progress.
17:59Kilauea is sculpting new shapes for the big island of Hawaii.
18:06And for one artist, it's a place that fuels creativity and fires the imagination.
18:12Living on the summit of Kilauea is quite an inspiration to my work.
18:25One views lava rocks, the colors of the rocks, the formations, the textures, the surfaces.
18:33And living in the forest, one senses the quality of the forest and tries to transfer to the
18:39work.
18:48The clay feels very wonderful.
18:50It's hard to describe how it really feels.
18:53It's like touching the earth.
18:54It's like touching the earth.
19:00You always work hard and light on it all until the ends of the coax of Eröm.
19:01But there are tons of rocks, you get better enter the fury.
19:10All right.
19:11You are so cool.
19:15You're like »I'm겠어요«.
19:17But I will not play an costume afar.
19:18But I have a gift of astronomer.
19:21You're armyles.
19:22You are not supposed to believe lunch.
19:23You're Cooper showed me.
19:24You're drunk and you're the우eni on it all.
19:25You're talking about Creolections' spot.
19:29Well, this particular series that I'm working on is a series, to me, symbolizing the volcano,
19:37living so closely to the volcano and creating a vessel from Earth to depict the feeling of the volcano.
19:45The opening of the volcano is irregular and not symmetrical, so I tend to reflect that in the opening of my vessels,
20:03whereas the rest of the piece is quite perfect, and to contrast that perfection, I create a slight imperfection,
20:11so then the piece will feel more balanced.
20:31Well, the piece is done when it feels right and looks right.
20:41The glazing is a process where one views the naked vessel and almost asks what it wants to wear.
21:05All my glazes come from the Earth. They're all Earth minerals that are combined in different proportions
21:13to give different textures and surfaces and colors.
21:19The caon basically fires the vessel.
21:33It creates a temperature hot enough to melt the glaze.
21:39This particular process that I'm using is called a Raku process, and it takes three hours to fire.
21:47.
22:03.
22:08.
22:13.
22:14When the volcano is erupting, there is a constant roar in the background.
22:36And this roar is just awesome and powerful.
22:40And as I'm working, I feel this power coming through me.
22:44I feel myself getting stronger.
22:47The most important thing when we're working with anything is to really find enjoyment in it
22:52and to be able to express ourself through whatever it is that we enjoy
22:57and to perfect it and refine it to a point where it can express ourself and our environment
23:05and the planet that we live on.
23:14I bet there are lots of times when you feel like hitting the road and going someplace you've never been.
23:23Well, that's when a book can be your passport to someplace else.
23:27Whether you head north, south, east, or west, here are some books that will show you the way.
23:33But you don't have to take my word for it.
23:38Hi, my name is Amanda Medina.
23:40I live in Brooklyn, in New York, in the USA, in the world.
23:46I have a place to be just like the girl in this book called Me on the Map.
23:51The girl in the story makes a map of her room.
23:56She makes a map of her house, too.
23:59Here's a map of her country.
24:01The girl enjoys looking for her own special place on the map.
24:06Everyone needs their own special place to be.
24:10Why don't you go to yours and read this book, Me on the Map?
24:14Hi, I'm Steely Dan.
24:17I like to visit places away from home, but it's always great to get back.
24:22That's what these two mice found out in this book called Town Mouse, Country Mouse.
24:27Town Mouse gets a letter from his country cousin.
24:30He's so excited.
24:32When he gets to the country, he's in for some surprises.
24:37He steps on a rock, but it isn't really a rock.
24:41It's a turtle shell.
24:45Country Mouse wants a taste of the city, too.
24:49He goes home with Town Mouse.
24:52The city has dangers of its own.
24:55Traffic and cats.
24:59I think they'll agree with the moral of this story,
25:02which is there's no place like home.
25:05That's why I recommend Town Mouse, Country Mouse.
25:09Hi, I'm Tisha.
25:11Did you know that somewhere in the world right now, it's already tomorrow?
25:17I found that out in a book called Somewhere in the World Right Now.
25:23Somewhere in the world right now is deepest night.
25:26A baker is baking bread in England.
25:30Elephants are sleeping in Africa.
25:33In another part of the world, it's daytime.
25:36Fishing boats are busy bringing in the catch.
25:39Here's a busy rush hour in a big city.
25:44Everyone has their own place in the world, whether the sun is up or down.
25:49Before you go to bed, read this book.
25:51Just one more piece.
25:55This is where I live.
25:58Los Angeles, California.
26:01L.A. is where a lot of TV shows and movies are made.
26:04And since I'm an actor, it makes sense for me to live here.
26:09Finished.
26:10A perfect addition to my travel room.
26:13You know what I love most about this room?
26:18It's not just about the places that I've been.
26:21It's also filled with dreams of places I have yet to go.
26:26Hey, maybe one of those places is where I'll see you next time.
26:31I can go anywhere.
