00:34It's a beautiful day in this neighborhood, a beautiful day for a neighbor, would you be mine? Could you be mine?
00:42It's a neighborly day in this beauty, would a neighborly day for a beauty, would you be mine? Could you be mine?
00:52I have always wanted to have a neighbor just like you. I've always wanted to live in a neighborhood with you, so let's make the most of this beautiful day.
01:08Since we're together we might as well say, would you be mine? Could you be mine? Won't you be my neighbor? Won't you please? Won't you please? Please won't you be my neighbor?
01:26I don't feel like singing a beautiful day in this neighborhood.
01:30Oh, it's beautiful enough outside all right, but I don't feel beautiful.
01:36In fact, I'd like to take this ticket and rip it up.
01:39This is a parking ticket.
01:42Yes, I parked my car in a, in one of those places that has a meter. Have you ever seen a parking meter? You know, you have to put nickels or dimes or something in them and then turn the thing and then this business goes up like that.
01:59How do you pay for parking? Well, I drove downtown and all I had was a dollar bill in my pocket. I didn't have change to put in there.
02:14Well, I went into the drug store and got some change and when I came out again there was a lady writing out this ticket.
02:23And I had the change right there and I said, look, I just went in to get the change. Don't give me a ticket.
02:30And she said, here's your ticket. Tell your story to the judge.
02:40What do you do when you're angry?
02:42What do you do with the mad that you feel when you feel so mad you could fight
02:50when the whole wide world seems oh so wrong and nothing you do seems very right?
02:59What do you do? Do you punch a bag? Do you pound some clay or some dough?
03:06Do you round up friends for a game of tag and see how fast you go?
03:15It's great to be able to stop when you've planned a thing that's wrong
03:22And be able to do something else instead and think this song
03:31I can stop when I want to, can stop when I wish, can stop, stop, stop anytime
03:40And what a good feeling to feel like this and know that the feeling is really mine
03:49Know that there's something deep inside that helps us become what we can
03:57For a girl can be someday a lady
04:02And a boy can be someday a man
04:12Wouldn't do any good to tear this up. No, there's a copy of it in that meter maid's book
04:18Well, I guess maybe what I should do is to take it to the judge
04:25What can I do when I'm angry? I can tell somebody about it
04:31Sure, why don't we go down to the courthouse
04:35And see what you do in a traffic court
04:40I think it'll, it'll be something for you to see
04:45Sure, there'll probably be some other people there
04:48I mean, when I get in there I'll probably have to wait a while
04:52So you'll wait with me, alright?
04:54Okay, let's go to the traffic court
04:56And then we'll come back here afterwards
04:58Have our visit
05:00Come with me? Alright, to the traffic court
05:03Where do I go, please?
05:07Please go into the courtroom and have a seat
05:11Your name will be called when the judge is ready to hear your case
05:14Thank you
05:15You're welcome
05:19Hello
05:20Hello, your name please?
05:22Fred Rogers
05:24May I have your driver's license as well as the ticket, please?
05:27Yes, this is the ticket
05:30Here's the license
05:32Thank you
05:35Can you tell me the procedure of what we'll go through in there?
05:41Well, now when you go inside, you'll hand your ticket to the clerk at the desk
05:45Then you have a seat and wait until your turn
05:48Your name will be called when the judge is ready to hear your case
05:51There are many people ahead of you
05:52I see
05:53And I give them the ticket, will I give them the license?
05:56Yes, just hand her everything
05:58Alright, thank you very much
05:59You're quite welcome
06:00I guess we go in now
06:02This is the courtroom here
06:03I got the ticket and I came down to explain
06:09Did you know that you were not supposed to park on the street near the hospital?
06:13Yes, sir
06:15But my wife is very sick and very weak
06:18I didn't want her to walk too far
06:20Then I think you did the right thing
06:22You will not have to pay the fine
06:23Thank you
06:27Mr. Bigelow?
06:28You took a towel on your motorcycle without giving her a helmet to protect her?
06:37May I explain, Your Honor?
06:39Go ahead
06:40Well, I was visiting my cousin, she's six years old
06:42And she wanted to ride on my motorcycle and I only had one helmet with me
06:45So you wore the helmet?
06:47It wouldn't fit her anyways
06:49If you don't have a helmet for your cousin, the law does not allow you to ride her on your motorcycle
06:53Well, I was just taking her around the block
06:56I wasn't going more than ten miles an hour
06:58I'm sorry, sir
06:59But the law says specifically that you may not take anyone on your motorcycle if that person does not have a helmet
07:04And certainly, this was no emergency
07:07But we were going slow and it was just my little cousin
07:10I'm afraid that makes it worse
07:12With the safety of a child is concerned, sir, I'm very strict
07:15Pay the fine
07:16Yes, sir
07:17But I don't have enough money now
07:20You can pay it a little at a time, just speak to the clerk
07:22Yes, sir
07:26Mrs. Mason?
07:33Do you drive a bus, Mrs. Mason?
07:34No, sir
07:35Then you shouldn't be parking in bus stops
07:38Let me explain
07:40See, I was on my way to the university
07:42I take classes two nights a week
07:44And I was at the dentist appointment right before
07:47And the dentist was late
07:49And I rode around the block four times
07:50And I couldn't find a parking place
07:52And I didn't want to be late again
07:54I'm sorry
07:57I understand, Mrs. Mason, about the dentist and so forth
08:00But this time, I'm going to have to find you
08:02This may teach you a lesson
08:03Oh, dear
08:08Mr. Rogers?
08:16You didn't put any money in the parking meter, Mr. Rogers
08:18And just why shouldn't you be fined?
08:21Well, I got to the parking place
08:24And realized that I didn't have any change
08:26I had only a dollar bill
08:28And there was a drug store very close to the place where I was parked
08:32And I ran in there to get some change
08:35And there was a long line of people
08:38And I just couldn't push my way through to get the change
08:42And so when I came back out, there was the ticket
08:46I mean, the woman was writing out the ticket
08:48And she just wouldn't stop
08:51How long were you in the drug store?
08:53Oh, three or four minutes
08:55But I just didn't think it was fair
08:57You know, I had the change in my hand when I came out
09:00And I...
09:01Well, she said, go tell the judge
09:04As long as you were trying to put money in the parking meter
09:07I don't see how we can fine you, Mr. Rogers
09:09But next time you plan on being downtown
09:11Try to have change for the parking meter
09:13I will, sir
09:15Thank you
09:18Mr. Altman?
09:19Well, now, you've seen and heard what it's like at a traffic court
09:33Yep
09:34I know it's a good thing to...
09:50To carry change with me when I go downtown to park
09:57And that judge reminded me of that
10:00Yeah, you heard what he said to me, didn't you?
10:07Try to remember to carry change with you when you go downtown to park
10:12When you have a car
10:17Well, it's a good thing that he reminded me of that
10:19I'll probably always carry change with me now
10:25Do people ever remind you of things?
10:28I mean...
10:32Oh, I don't know
10:33When you're...
10:34When you're climbing up high or something
10:36Does somebody remind you not to go too high?
10:42Does it make you cross?
10:47When people remind you of things like that?
10:58But does it make you glad, too?
11:08I mean...
11:11Well...
11:13If somebody says to you, don't go up too high
11:16Because they're afraid you'll fall
11:19It's because they like you
11:22Yeah, they don't want you to get hurt
11:24So in a way you could feel glad about that, you know
11:30Feel cross and glad at the same time
11:38Food for you, fish
11:40Yep
11:41Well...
11:44Let's have some...
11:48Neighborhood of make-believe
11:51What's this one?
11:54Clock where Daniel Stripe-a-Tiger lives
11:59And what about this one?
12:03Factory
12:05Factory
12:13Who lives in the tree?
12:16Henry had a pussycat and X the owl
12:24Who lives in those holes in the ground?
12:27The platypuses
12:28The platypuses
12:34And who lives in...
12:38This museum go round?
12:47Lady Elaine Fairchild
12:48Well, you know, King Friday feels that he's doing something good
12:55For everybody in the neighborhood by insisting that they watch that television program
13:01But many of the other people here feel that it's wrong
13:06And, uh, they're just thinking today how they can tell King Friday that it is wrong
13:16Shall we make-believe with them?
13:20Okay?
13:22Uh, let's pretend that King Friday and Queen Sarah are talking together
13:27Okay?
13:29Neighborhood of make-believe
13:30But I don't think you understand, Friday
13:35I understand perfectly, my dear
13:41They just don't want to learn
13:44That's not it at all
13:46They want to grow from within
13:49Well, a little memorizing never hurt anybody
13:51Now, let me hear Tuesday count to three
13:54Tuesday, count to three for your daddy
13:57Friday, he can't count
14:00Why not? He's been watching that program
14:03It takes more than that
14:06He doesn't need to count right now
14:09He doesn't?
14:11He needs to learn about other things first
14:14But I don't see that it would hurt anything
14:17Of course it wouldn't, Friday
14:20But people need a little time
14:23People need to be prodded to learn
14:24I expect them here at 13 as usual
14:31Meow meow all finished meow
14:34Oh, your needlepoint really looks swell Henrietta
14:38Meow meow learn meow one another
14:41My posters are all printed too
14:43Meow meow think meow meow king meow meow angry
14:46Oh, he may be angry at first
14:49Meow wouldn't send us away meow meow angry would he?
14:52Well, I hope not
14:57There
15:00Let us learn from one another
15:03Wow, X really did a beautiful job on these signs
15:07He sure did, and you know, someday he's going to be as good a printer as Benjamin Franklin
15:12How do you think Uncle Friday's going to react to our protest?
15:16Well, I think he'll...
15:19You know, I really don't know, Lady Evelyn, I'm kind of worried about it
15:25Me too, makes me feel better to know that you're worried too
15:29Well, it's almost time to go to the king
15:33What do you think he'll do, Corny?
15:34Oh, I don't know, but it can't be much worse than it already is
15:38What do you mean by that?
15:40Well, having to watch that silly program all the time
15:43Instead of being able to do your real work
15:45Right
15:47Oh, I guess you're right, but what if he gets really angry?
15:50Well, sometimes that just has to happen
15:53Sometimes it really helps
15:55Well, I hope you're right, Corny, I hope you're right
15:58It's going to take me quite a while to get the balloon to the castle
16:02Well, maybe you'd better leave now
16:04It's almost twelve and a half and we have to be there by thirteen
16:08Hey, well, I'll start to pull it down there now
16:11And then I'll meet you there
16:16Well, they should be arriving any minute
16:19Oh, boy, what a day
16:21Oh, here come two of my marchers now
16:23Good day, dearies
16:27You look in fine fettle
16:30I wish I felt in fine fettle, Lady Elaine
16:33What's the matter?
16:35Well, we don't know how the king's going to react, Lady
16:38Oh, don't let Friday bother you
16:40His bark's worse than his bite
16:42I just hope he doesn't get angry
16:44So, what if he does?
16:46Well, he has feelings too, you know, Lady Elaine
16:49We'd better keep going, gang
16:50We don't want to be late, we don't want to be late
16:53You know, this is kind of a special speedy delivery
16:55Sure is
16:57Thank you
16:58Are you nervous?
16:59Well, uh, no
17:01Well, yes I am, handyman, yes I am
17:03I just don't know what the king's going to do
17:05I think we're all a little bit nervous, Mr. McFeely
17:07Well, all we can do is tell him how we really feel
17:11That's right, that's right
17:13Sure, from there on, it's up to him
17:15TV or not TV
17:17I've gotten in touch with everybody in the neighborhood
17:19And the rest of them are all going to meet us over at the castle
17:21Come on, that's fine
17:23Well, let's go
17:24All right, let's do it
17:25All right, let's do it
17:27Let us go
17:32Well, here we are
17:34Well, where's the king?
17:36Where's the king?
17:38I see everybody but the king here
17:40Yes, is the king here yet? Does anyone know when he's coming?
17:43Well, uh, he really ought to be coming along any minute now
17:47Uh, who's going to speak for us?
17:50I think you ought to, handyman
17:51Oh, no, I don't want to do it
17:54Uh, I think Mr. McFeely, he's the oldest
17:57Oh, no, not me, handyman, I'm just helping out today
17:59Just helping out today
18:01What about you, Lady Elaine?
18:03Would you like to speak for us?
18:05Well, sure I will
18:07Sure I will, uh, TV or not TV
18:09Now, here's what we'll do
18:11When he comes out, I'll give the signal
18:13And you all start waving your posters and chanting our chant
18:17You know, let us learn from one another or TV or not TV
18:21Then, yeah, when I give the signal, you stop
18:25And I'll tell Friday what we want
18:28Good
18:30Oh, listen, we're coming now
18:36Uh, what is the meaning of this, this assembly?
18:41Now
18:42Now
18:50Cease and desist
18:56Stop this immediately
18:59What is the meaning of all of this?
19:03I demand an explanation
19:05Well, it's, uh, it's that television, Friday
19:08We've had it up to here with your television
19:12How can you say that?
19:15It's good for you
19:17Maybe for some of us, some of the time
19:20But not for all of us all the time, King Friday
19:22Some of us have more important things to do than watch that stuff, uh, your majesty
19:28Right, my patients need tending, too
19:31And my rockets need to be manufactured
19:34And my switchboard needs an operator
19:37And I have deliveries to make
19:39And I have handyman jobs to do
19:40Oh, and I want to study my owl history
19:44Meow meow meow meow, close to so, meow
19:47We know you meant well, Uncle Friday
19:50Uh, of course I meant well, uh, why else would I have told you to watch it?
19:56Well, we understand how you feel, Friday
19:59Uh, they just want you to understand how everyone else feels, too
20:04We know you want what's best for us, Uncle Friday
20:07It's just that others of us have some things that are more important to us right now
20:13Yes, sir, King Friday, we appreciate everything you do for us, sir, but sometimes things...
20:18Uh, what is it that you want?
20:22Uh, we just want a chance to learn from one another
20:26Uh, we'd like to be able to, uh, to see the program when we want to
20:30And not to have to see it every day
20:34Uh, Sarah, what is your advice?
20:38I think it would be just fine if you'd let people see it, uh, when they want to, Friday
20:45Good for you, Sarah
20:47Uh, when they want to, uh, that's quite a curious suggestion
20:53Uh, suppose we try that, then
20:57Uh, see it when you feel you want to see it, uh, when you feel you need to see it
21:02I need to see it.
21:03Hooray for me!
21:05Hooray!
21:06He's a jolly good fellow, for he's a jolly good fellow,
21:10for he's a jolly good fellow.
21:13Nobody can deny him.
21:16That was nice, thank you.
21:19Oh, that was wonderful.
21:21I just never expected, I never knew.
21:26This is quite nice, the jolly good fellow, and all that.
21:31It was quite nice.
21:34Oh, it's 13 and a half.
21:36Would anybody like to watch the program?
21:39You know what I think would be nice?
21:42I think it would be nice if King Friday were to play his bass vial for us.
21:46Would you play for us, Uncle Friday?
21:49Well, certainly, I'd...
21:52Well, I certainly would enjoy that.
21:55Oh, I think that's a wonderful idea.
21:57Would you please, Your Majesty?
21:59I'd be delighted.
22:00I'll just be back in a moment.
22:02Oh, great.
22:03Oh, great.
22:04What an uncle!
22:05Hey, I'll collect those signs.
22:06We're not going to need those signs.
22:07It really was nice how it happened.
22:09Oh, thank you.
22:10Well, it certainly turned out well, didn't it?
22:12May I help you?
22:13Yes, thank you very much.
22:14Such a pleasure to be in your neighborhood.
22:16Yes.
22:17I was thinking of a rather happy song.
22:21Aren't you?
22:22You know, a good feeling kind of a song.
22:24Oh, good idea.
22:25Let me see here.
22:26That's it?
22:27That's it?
22:28That's it?
22:29That's it?
22:30You know you're really...
22:31That's it?
22:32That's such a happy feeling.
22:33That's it?
22:34That's it?
22:35You're growing inside.
22:36And when you wake up, ready to say,
22:39I think I'll grow 12 inches today.
22:43What's you, Daddy?
22:44It's such a good feeling, a very good feeling,
22:47I'm lucky that you know you're in my life.
22:49Oh, go, King Friday!
22:50Let's go, King Friday!
22:55There's a good feeling in the neighborhood of make-believe right now.
23:02Yes, sir.
23:05There was something that was very important to those people,
23:08and they could tell the king just how they felt about it.
23:13Yeah, and the king understood.
23:16When something's very important to you,
23:21can you tell people why?
23:24Why it's so important?
23:31It sure does help you to grow if you can.
23:35Grow inside.
23:37When I was in school,
23:39the place where they used to have plays and things in the school,
23:43the auditorium, had words up above the stage that said,
23:49you can know the truth and the truth will make you free.
23:54And I thought about that a long, long time.
23:58Even when I went to another school, I still remembered those words.
24:03And just a little while ago, I wrote a song
24:09that is my idea of what those words mean.
24:12What if I were very, very sad,
24:18and all I did was smile?
24:22I wonder after a while,
24:25what might become of my sadness?
24:29What if I were very, very angry,
24:32and all I did was sit and never think of it?
24:39What might become of my anger?
24:43Where would they go?
24:45And what would they do if I couldn't let them out?
24:49Maybe I'd fall, maybe get sick, or doubt.
24:58But what if I could know the truth,
25:02and say just how I feel?
25:06I think I'd learn a lot that's real about freedom.
25:11I'm learning to sing a sad song when I'm sad.
25:21I'm learning to say I'm angry when I'm very mad.
25:28I'm learning to shout, I'm getting it out.
25:32I'm happy learning exactly how I feel inside of me.
25:39I'm learning to know the truth.
25:44I'm learning to tell the truth.
25:48Discovering truth will make me free.
25:55And I've discovered that, yeah.
25:59And you will too.
26:01The more you're able to know the truth,
26:05and to tell people how you feel,
26:07the freer you'll feel inside.
26:10Yep.
26:12And what a good feeling that is.
26:17You'll have that same kind of good feeling.
26:19Mm-hmm.
26:20It's such a good feeling to know you're alive.
26:25It's such a happy feeling you're growing inside.
26:29And when you wake up ready to sing,
26:33I think I'll make a snappy new day today.
26:37It's such a good feeling, a very good feeling.
26:42The feeling you know that I'll be back when the week is new.
26:48And I'll have more ideas for you.
26:54And you'll have things you'll want to talk about.
26:58I will too.
27:00I've liked being with you this week.
27:06I guess you know why.
27:09Because I like children and I like to visit with children.
27:14Mm-hmm.
27:16You're very special to me.
