01:00I live in a neighborhood with you, so let's make the most of this beautiful day.
01:09Since we're together, we might as well say, would you be mine, would you be mine?
01:16Won't you be my neighbor?
01:19Won't you please, won't you please, please won't you be my neighbor?
01:28Hey, neighbor.
01:30Do you sometimes sing that song with me when I come in?
01:33Please won't you be my neighbor?
01:39That looks like a fish, doesn't it?
01:41Well, that's what I wanted it to look like.
01:44And that says fish. F-I-S-H. Fish.
01:52Well, you know, I have some fish right here.
01:55And I'd like to show this card to those fish.
02:04See fish? Yeah.
02:08That look a little like you.
02:13Now I have another aquarium and some new fish that I wanted you to see.
02:20Now this aquarium and new fish belong to my friend Sylvia Earle.
02:27She loaned this to me today so we could show you.
02:31And Sylvia knows so much about fish.
02:35Yeah.
02:36Sylvia will come to see you after a while, you beautiful fish.
02:41They're very quiet down there, probably waiting for her.
02:48I remember one time Sylvia Earle and I went snorkeling together.
02:53She and I saw lots of fish that day.
02:56In fact, I often like to think about that time.
03:00First we put on our goggles and our snorkels.
03:12Then into the water.
03:15I remember it felt so good.
03:19The first fish we saw were black and yellow striped fish called Sergeant Majors.
03:32Then some French grunts.
03:49And a French angelfish.
04:00The fish moved so gracefully like an underwater ballet.
04:05It seemed so peaceful down there.
04:19I love to watch fish wherever they may be.
04:24They seem so quiet.
04:29Peace and quiet.
04:32Peace, peace, peace, peace.
04:36Peace and quiet.
04:38Peace, peace, peace.
04:41Peace and quiet.
04:43Peace, peace, peace.
04:46We all want peace.
04:48We all want peace.
04:53And we all need quiet times to grow, too.
04:58Do you have a place that you can go to be quiet when you want?
05:04Oh, there's the phone.
05:06Let's see who that is.
05:08Hello?
05:10Oh, hi.
05:12This would be a perfect time.
05:14Good.
05:15All right, see you in a minute.
05:17That was Sylvia Earle herself, and she'll be over in a little while.
05:23She must walk very fast.
05:25Let's see.
05:29Oh, it's Mr. McFeely.
05:30Hi, Mr. McFeely.
05:32Did you deliver?
05:32This is for Sylvia Earle.
05:34She asked me to bring it here.
05:36Oh, good.
05:37Well, she's expected any minute, so I'll give it to her.
05:39Then you want to wait for a visit?
05:41Well, I can't today.
05:42I have more deliveries, but maybe I'll stop by a little later.
05:45All right, good.
05:45All righty, let's give you a delivery.
05:46Now, you'll give that to Sylvia Earle, right?
05:48I surely will.
05:48Bye-bye.
05:49Thanks, Mr. McFeely.
05:50You're welcome.
05:50For Sylvia Earle.
05:54Maybe it's something she wants to show us on Picture Picture.
05:58I just thought of something.
06:00I think I'd like to wait for Sylvia Earle right outside, right on the steps.
06:06Come on.
06:07What kinds of things do you do when you're waiting?
06:20I sometimes just sit and breathe in and breathe out.
06:27in, out.
06:37And I just think, in, and out.
06:46Oh, here she comes now.
06:49Hi, Sylvia.
06:50Well, hello.
06:50I'd like you to know my television neighbor, Sylvia Earle.
06:54Hi.
06:54Mr. McFeely delivered this for you.
06:57Oh, great.
06:58We, uh, have some equipment to use, and I want to show this video to you.
07:03Good.
07:03Come on in.
07:06Your fish are waiting for you.
07:07Oh, good.
07:07Did you want to show this now, or do you want to do that later?
07:13Let's use the equipment first, and then look at the picture.
07:16Okay.
07:19Here they are.
07:20Oh, hello there, guys.
07:22They've been very quiet.
07:24Well, they're just getting acquainted with a new place.
07:26Mm-hmm.
07:27So, I brought some food for them.
07:31Oh, good.
07:31I'll get this set up.
07:35You've always loved fish, haven't you?
07:37Oh, I certainly have.
07:38You know, I hope you love these fish.
07:42These are special friends.
07:43They're individuals, you know?
07:45They're beautiful.
07:46Each one has a name.
07:47One of them is called Sunshine, and one is called Sunset.
07:52One is called Shadow, the shy one that is sort of behind the others.
07:57Mm-hmm.
07:57They have beautiful colors.
07:59Hello, Shadow.
08:01Hello, Sunset and Sunshine.
08:04Gorgeous colors.
08:05You see their eyes.
08:06They look at you while you're looking at them.
08:10They have a nice home here.
08:13Well, this is yours, and I'm grateful that you'd loan it to us today.
08:17Now, this equipment helps us to hear under the water.
08:21Is that it?
08:22Yes.
08:22You think about the places underwater as being silent, and they are sometimes, but many of
08:28the creatures in the sea, including these fish that live in freshwater, are very noisy.
08:34They're noisy eaters, and they sometimes make sounds to communicate with each other.
08:39They talk in a way.
08:41So, maybe we'll be able to hear them?
08:42I hope so.
08:43Oh, good.
08:44That's what we're going to try to do.
08:45In fact, would you plug this in, please?
08:47Sure.
08:48I have a plug right over here.
08:53All right.
08:59And we should take the filter out.
09:01It's okay for just a little while.
09:03You mean just turn it off?
09:04Turn it off, yes.
09:07Otherwise, we just hear bubbles.
09:09Oh, sure.
09:10Now, this is a microphone?
09:12This is a microphone.
09:14We call it a fish phone.
09:17Yes.
09:18Uh-huh.
09:18Uh-huh.
09:19We'll put this in here.
09:22Hi, fish.
09:23Don't be afraid.
09:25This is not meant to hurt you.
09:29Here we are.
09:32Now.
09:33Are they hungry, do you think?
09:34I think they probably are.
09:36Now.
09:38Take this off.
09:40Let's see.
09:42Would you like to feed them just a little bit, too?
09:44Sure.
09:47All right.
09:48Let's both put a little bit in.
09:51Ooh.
09:52Come on, guys.
09:53Child time.
09:55Ha-ha.
09:55Ha-ha.
09:55Come on.
10:06It's a strange place for them to be, and so they aren't quite sure what to do.
10:15A little more down here.
10:22They certainly are interested.
10:24But, you know, I've been noticing that each one is different in the markings.
10:30Yes.
10:31You know, you tell the difference between a cat and a, you know, different cats and different dogs,
10:36but to realize that every fish is different from every other fish.
10:40That's why I give them names, so that I can recognize their individuality.
10:45Mm-hmm.
10:46But they have eyes the way we do.
10:49They have a heart the way we do.
10:52Mm-hmm.
10:53They have a brain, just as we do.
10:56They have a backbone.
10:57They're, they're in so many ways the way we are.
11:02Only these fish should be hungry.
11:04Let's try just a little bit more.
11:06See if we can get them to come.
11:07Usually they're very noisy eaters.
11:10Come on, guys.
11:11Chow time.
11:16Chow time.
11:17Dinner bell.
11:20Mm-hmm.
11:22Let me try one more time.
11:24Right down here where they are.
11:26We need some sinking fish food.
11:28Mm-hmm.
11:29We have floating fish food.
11:32Come on, fish.
11:33Come on, sunshine.
11:36Sunset.
11:37Shadow.
11:37Shadow.
11:37Here you are.
11:44Now, if you were in there, you could really talk to me.
11:47I agree.
11:47It looks as if they might be coming up.
11:53These fish are, are called cichlids.
11:56Cichlids?
11:57Mm-hmm.
11:57They live in a family, or are part of a family of fish.
12:00There's many different kinds.
12:01And usually, they have very good appetites.
12:07But, you know, sometimes you don't feel like eating.
12:10Of course.
12:10And sometimes I don't feel like eating.
12:12And I guess this is one of the times when these beautiful little fellows are just content
12:17to come and visit in your neighborhood.
12:20Oh, good.
12:20Now, do you have some fish on the videotape that you brought?
12:26Yes.
12:26I'll show you some fish that really make sounds.
12:29And these do, too.
12:30People who keep fish like this, sometimes even without this special hydrophone or fish
12:37phone, can hear the fish making sounds.
12:40And especially when they're eating, they, like some children, can be noisy when they
12:48eat.
12:48But let's take this out now.
12:51And we'll just put it down here.
12:54And let's go look at this tape.
12:55All right, fine.
12:56Should I turn this off?
12:57Let's turn it off, yes.
12:59Okay.
13:00Leave the fish to their own peace and quiet for a moment.
13:04Maybe when we're gone, they'll have something to eat.
13:08Thanks for putting the air back on.
13:10All right.
13:12We have the tape?
13:13I think I left it out here.
13:16Oh, yes.
13:16Here it is.
13:17So these are underwater sounds, aren't they?
13:20Yes.
13:20These are of saltwater fish, fish that live in the ocean.
13:24And first we're going to see some little damselfish.
13:26Good.
13:27Let's take a look.
13:28Some underwater sounds of fish.
13:37Damselfish.
13:37Oh, you hear them?
13:40Mm-hmm.
13:41Oh, yes.
13:43That's really great.
13:44They're like little birds.
13:46I think a fish is birds in the sea, in a way.
13:49Ah.
13:53Just flying around, like, brrr.
13:56Yeah.
13:57Brrr.
13:57Wouldn't you like to know what you're saying?
13:59Yes.
14:02And a parrot fish?
14:04Yeah.
14:05The sea is just like a flock of birds.
14:07But instead of flying through the sky, they're swimming through the sea.
14:12Making that metallic sound.
14:15Mm-hmm.
14:16Wish I could sound like they do.
14:17Another damsel fish?
14:27Yes.
14:29These are special ones called sergeant majors.
14:33They have stripes?
14:34Yes.
14:34Now, here's a beautiful dolphin.
14:48The dolphins actually see with sound.
14:51They rely on sound the way we rely on sight.
14:56That brrr, brrr sound.
14:58Oh, there's a diver.
14:59Yes, but he scans the diver and also the bottom and all the surroundings to find fish and to
15:06see where he's going with sound.
15:20You know, like us, they have to breathe.
15:24They go back to the surface to get a breathy bear.
15:26And there's a friend.
15:28Yes.
15:29Oh, thank you for that.
15:35I had no idea that there were so many sounds under the water.
15:39Oh, it's wonderful.
15:40We should go do that again.
15:41Go diving and listen to them ourselves.
15:43All right.
15:44But, you know, we listen to the bubbles of the scuba diver.
15:47Would you like to hear what the fish hear with a bubbling sound in the tank?
15:52Oh, sure.
15:52Let's go do that again.
15:53We'll need to plug this back in.
15:59Oh, all right.
16:00You mean we'll hear what the fish actually hear.
16:04Well, that's right.
16:05Okay.
16:05Okay.
16:06It'll sound like a scuba diver to them, perhaps.
16:09Uh-huh.
16:10All those bubbles.
16:11I guess so.
16:18You want to hold it?
16:19Sure.
16:20So if the fish get real close to this, this is what they'll hear.
16:26That's right.
16:28But if they should swim away from the bubbles, then it's quieter.
16:35It gets quieter.
16:37You can go off to a corner and enjoy some peace and quiet.
16:41Exactly.
16:42Oh, thanks for showing us that.
16:44That's really nice.
16:45In fact, thanks for letting us know so much about fish.
16:49Well, I really enjoyed it.
16:50I really hope we can go back and splash around in the ocean with the fish again.
16:54Of course.
16:55And you have to go to school?
16:57Yes, I'm going to go teach a class about fish in the neighborhood school.
17:01Well, good.
17:02May I leave this here?
17:03Of course.
17:03All right.
17:03You'll come back for all of this, won't you?
17:05Yes, I will.
17:06Thanks, Sylvia.
17:13Those school people are lucky to have you come visit them.
17:16Well, I was lucky to come and visit you.
17:18See you later.
17:19Bye-bye.
17:19Bye, my dear.
17:20I had no idea that underwater creatures made such different noises.
17:29Did you?
17:31Isn't it wonderful that Sylvia Earle cares so much about what lives in the water?
17:37She's been interested in that for a long, long time, ever since she was a little girl.
17:43Well, let's get the trolley and have some make-believe.
17:46We've been pretending a couple of things in the neighborhood of make-believe.
17:54First of all, Henrietta Pussycat and X the owl are scared because they think that there
18:01are some strangers from outer planets somewhere in the neighborhood.
18:07And second of all, Prince Tuesday and Daniel Tiger and H.J. Elephant III are trying on different
18:16costumes because they want to have a parade.
18:22Well, let's pretend more about that as the trolley goes into the neighborhood of make-believe.
18:30Not for long, trolley.
18:39In fact, there it goes again.
18:42Yes, yes.
18:43Yes.
18:44You see, even the trolley's tired of the noise.
18:48Can you hear it all the way in, Westwood?
18:51Some of our citizens can, and they're complaining.
18:54What is your suggestion then, Mayor Maggie?
18:57I suggest that someone communicate to them that nobody's going to hurt them.
19:04Whom do you suggest do that, Mayor Maggie?
19:10Perhaps a fish?
19:13Yes, perhaps.
19:15How do you like this costume?
19:17Lady Evelyn, I presume?
19:20Correct as usual, Uncle Friday.
19:23Hello, Mayor Maggie.
19:24Hello.
19:25I've decided I'm going to be a fish in the parade.
19:29Have you all decided?
19:31Well, we're hoping to solve one other problem first.
19:35Do you think you can help us?
19:37Oh, sure.
19:38The parade's much later.
19:39What would you like me to do?
19:41Hear that noise?
19:43Oh, yes.
19:44That's X and Hens' warning signals.
19:48We are tired of those noises.
19:52Both here and in Westwood.
19:54You may tell them there is nothing to fear, so they can stop their warnings, Lady Evelyn.
20:01Easier said than done, but I'll try again.
20:05Very good.
20:06How do you like this one?
20:07Oh, Prince Tuesday.
20:09Yes.
20:10Very good, son.
20:11Very good.
20:12I think the fancy fish better go talk with the owl and pussycat, however.
20:18I'll swim on over.
20:19Very good.
20:20See you at the parade, Cousin Betty Fish.
20:23Right you are, cousin.
20:25We'll await your report.
20:28Not too soon.
20:31Yes.
20:31Oh, Bob Doc.
20:44How are you?
20:50You won't say?
20:51But you're allowed to talk.
20:58It's a secret.
21:02Well, but do you know how to stop all this noise here?
21:07Oh, that's much better.
21:20And, uh, would you happen to know where X and Henrietta Pussycat are?
21:24Thanks, Bob...
21:27Thanks, Bob...
21:31Bob Doc.
21:33Oh, thanks, Bob Doc!
21:35Before you ring that bell, toots...
21:55All right, Foo-Foo Fish, what do you think you want?
22:03I'm looking for X the owl and Henrietta Pussycat.
22:07Is that you, Lady Aberlin?
22:10Lady Aberlin Fish.
22:12Hmm.
22:12Out of water.
22:14Ready for a parade, but looking for X and Henrietta.
22:18They're in my S-room.
22:23S-room?
22:25S for scared and safe.
22:29Why do you want them?
22:31Well, I want to know why they're scared.
22:33They say it's a secret.
22:36Something to do with outer space.
22:39But why the drum and the bell ringing?
22:43They have them fixed so that every time something strange goes by, the drum and bells sound.
22:51Something strange?
22:54That's what they said.
22:56Well, I guess you could even call a fish costume strange.
23:02Could be.
23:04Are you going to be in the parade?
23:05Nope.
23:06I'm taking care of X and Hint.
23:09They need me.
23:10Why, Lady Elaine, good for you.
23:14Well, anybody's welcome in the S-room.
23:17S for scared and safe.
23:20Right you are, toots.
23:21See ya.
23:22See ya.
23:24I think I may know what's been scaring X and Hen.
23:29I'll go tell Mayor Maggie and Uncle Friday.
23:31I know that I may look for you.
24:01It looks strange, but I'm just Lady Aberlin in a fish costume.
24:05Oh, do you have a report for us?
24:20Yes.
24:20It has something to do with looking different.
24:23Well, you certainly look different in that fish costume.
24:27But can we stop the noise for keeps?
24:31Yes, I'm sure we can.
24:33Oh, very good, yes.
24:37Yes, a parade, yes.
24:40Oh, well, you'll all wear costumes.
24:43It will be a splendid parade.
24:45Good.
24:46Good.
24:46Good.
24:50So, what do you think has been scaring X and Henrietta?
24:55Maybe something to do with costumes for the parade?
25:01We'll think more about that next time.
25:03Right now, let's feed my fish.
25:08There you are, fish.
25:12Yeah, you needed some food, too, didn't you?
25:16Just imagine the sounds that they make.
25:24You talking with each other.
25:27Can you imagine some soft sounds?
25:29And some loud sounds?
25:36Now, Sylvia will be back for you all later.
25:40Yep.
25:46I was just thinking, did you ever hear loud, scary sounds on television?
25:53Well, some television programs are loud and scary,
25:56with people shooting and hitting other people.
26:01You know, you can do something about that.
26:04When you see scary television, you can turn it off.
26:09And when you do turn it off,
26:11that will show that you're the strongest of them all.
26:15It takes a very strong person to be able to turn off scary TV.
26:22Mm-hmm.
26:22That's one of the ways you'll be able to tell that you're really growing.
26:28You're learning so many important things.
26:32And I'm so proud of you.
26:34It's such a good feeling to know you're alive.
26:39It's such a happy feeling.
26:42You're growing inside.
26:44And when you wake up ready to say,
26:47I think I'll make a snappy new day.
26:52It's such a good feeling.
26:55A very good feeling.
26:58The feeling, you know,
27:00that I'll be back when the day is new.
27:04And I'll have more ideas for you.
27:09And you'll have things you'll want to talk about.
27:14I will, too.
27:20We talked a lot about fish today, didn't we?
27:26Yeah.
27:27I really like being with you.
27:29You make my day such a special day
27:32by just your being yourself.
27:36I'll be back next time.
27:37Bye-bye.
27:39For anyone who would like to know,
27:45here's the PBS Neighborhood Online address.
27:48Here's the PBS Neighborhood Online is brought back.
27:53Bye-bye.
27:57Bye-bye.
28:00Bye-bye.
28:02Bye-bye.
28:05Bye-bye.
