00:00Mission.
00:30It's a beautiful day in this neighborhood, a beautiful day for a neighbor, would you be mine, could you be mine?
00:42It's a neighborly day in this beauty, would a neighborly day for a beauty, would you be mine, could you be mine?
00:50I have always wanted to have a neighbor just like you, I've always wanted to live in a neighborhood with you, so let's make the most of this beautiful day.
01:05Since we're together, we might as well say, would you be mine, could you be mine, won't you be my neighbor?
01:15Won't you please, won't you please, please won't you be my neighbor?
01:24Hi neighbor, welcome to this neighborhood.
01:30I want to show you a couple things right now.
01:33There are two name tags, this one says, Francois Clemens, and this one says, School Bus.
01:45Now I'm going to show you Francois Clemens' picture, and I want you to tell me which one of these name tags says his name.
01:57Do you remember, remember that that one said, School Bus, and this one says Francois Clemens under here.
02:14Okay, I'll put Francois Clemens' name on his picture.
02:19Have you ever seen name tags like that?
02:29So, there's his picture with his name.
02:33Now I'll put the other one on the trolley, School Bus.
02:37So, let's pretend more about the beginning of school in the neighborhood of make-believe.
03:04You remember yesterday, Anna, Prince, and Daniel all started to school at someplace else.
03:11Harriet Elizabeth Cow is the teacher, and they all seem to be having a good time.
03:17But let's pretend first about the people back in the neighborhood of make-believe.
03:22The king and queen and all of them.
03:25Let's think about what they might be doing at home while the children are away at school.
03:32And we'll just pretend that Francois Clemens comes to visit, too.
03:37All right?
03:37Neighborhood of make-believe.
03:39Oh, here comes a trolley school bus now.
03:47A trolley school bus, I presume?
03:50I was just waiting to go to the new school with you, trolley.
03:55That's what I understand.
03:56I can hardly wait to see it.
03:58And you say you're going to the school to sing for the children?
04:02That's right.
04:02Mrs. Cow invited me.
04:03She suggested that I make up a new song using the names of the children.
04:07Oh, I'd love to hear that.
04:09Anna, Prince and Daniel, Anna, Prince and Daniel, Daniel, Prince and Anna are here.
04:21Anna, Prince and Daniel, Anna, Prince and Daniel, Daniel, Prince and Anna are here.
04:34Oh, what a lovely song.
04:36It's beautiful.
04:37Yes, it does sound nice, but why is the Prince always in the middle?
04:42I mean, you say Anna, Prince and Daniel, Daniel, Prince and Anna.
04:47Well, it just makes better musical form, King Friday.
04:50Prince, Daniel and Anna just doesn't have the same flow as Anna, Prince and Daniel.
04:56Well, I wasn't thinking of musical form.
04:59Oh, hello, Dr. Bell and Mrs. Platypus.
05:02How are you?
05:02Oh, good to see you.
05:05Well, I guess I must be going.
05:07I'm going to someplace else and school.
05:09Oh, well, I hope you have a good time.
05:12Well, this is a surprise to have you both come over like this.
05:19To what do we owe this visit?
05:22Well, I invited them Friday to come over.
05:25Oh, and we're so glad you did.
05:27Aye, we were just talking about how we miss our little Anna.
05:31Oh, yes.
05:32And I miss Prince Tuesday.
05:34It's lonely in the castle without him.
05:37Oh, and I've been thinking all day about what a big thing this is, the first week of school for children.
05:43But also, what a big thing it is for parents.
05:46Aye, it can't be a lonely time.
05:49Nonsense.
05:50Why are all of you lonely?
05:53I mean, I'm glad my son is in school.
05:56He's going there so he can grow up to be a wise prince and someday a king like his father.
06:03That's fine, dear.
06:04But he's a little boy right now, and it's all right to miss him when he's away.

16:40Anna, Prince and Daniel have started to school, and their teacher knew how to make a good
16:56beginning for them, didn't she?
16:59We'll just take off your costume trolley, because we'll be pretending other things
17:06next week.
17:08So, off you go.
17:10I've enjoyed pretending about the school in the neighborhood of make-believe, but before
17:19I leave today, I'd like to take you to see the outside and inside of a real school bus.
17:26I know a school bus driver who said she'd be glad to show us through her bus.
17:31Her name is Mrs. Grace Lutz, and I'd like you to meet her and see her.
17:35So, we'll just go over there now to see a real school bus, you and I together.
17:43Hi, Grace.
18:02Well, hello, Fred.
18:03How are you today?
18:03Good, thanks.
18:04You know, I told you I wanted to show my television friends the outside and inside of the school bus.
18:09Each one has a number.
18:14It's certainly big.
18:15Big wheels.
18:17See that?
18:17And, uh, that school bus sign up there.
18:20Yep, every school bus has school bus sign on it, Fred.
18:23Would you care to come inside?
18:24Sure.
18:25I'd like to see the inside.
18:27Watch this step.
18:28It's a big one.
18:29All the little children hold on the rail with both hands when they come up.
18:33You mean this rail here?
18:34Right.
18:34Right there.
18:36Oh, that's one of the first things they'd see.
18:38That is a tall step, and this is a long bus.
18:41A lot of seats in here.
18:43Yep, Fred.
18:43Twenty-two seats for sixty-six children.
18:46Sixty-six children.
18:47That means that somebody's always sitting beside you, huh?
18:51It's three children in each seat.
18:52I see.
18:54Well, now, when the children come in, Grace, what's the first thing that you ask them to do?
18:59I ask them to go in and sit each seat by the window, and as they fall in, they fill up the seat and keep going back.
19:05I see.
19:06And, uh, do the younger ones sit in a special place?
19:10We like them on the inside by the window, and that's about the safest spot for them.
19:14So that the younger ones are really nearest you, is that right?
19:18I keep them in the front where I can keep my eye on them.
19:20Uh-huh.
19:22And, uh, then once they're all seated, what do you do?
19:26Well, I close the door, Fred, before I pull out.
19:30I see.
19:30And for them to keep safe while you're driving along, what's the best thing for them to do?
19:39To be seated, and I can see them all in the mirror.
19:41How about you sitting here and looking?
19:43I'd be glad to.
19:44I like to try new things.
19:49Oh, that's a big steering wheel.
19:51Oh, yeah, I can see.
19:53All the way to the back.
19:55Even when they peek down over the seats, you can see the little heads.
19:58Now, why don't you move, move back in some of the seats so I can see you?
20:01Okay.
20:02Just take any seat, just so long as I can.
20:08How about here, Fred?
20:09I can see you.
20:10Yep.
20:11One more?
20:13Sure.
20:15So this is the way you're able to tell that the children are all right back then?
20:19This is what you see, Fred.
20:21Sure, because the children are a lot shorter than you are.
20:24Uh-huh.
20:25Come on back up.
20:25This is your bus.
20:26It's fun.
20:32What do the children call you, Grace?
20:34They call me lots of things, Fred.
20:35They call me Mrs. Lutz, Grace, but witchy-poo at Halloween.
20:40Witchy-poo?
20:41Witchy-poo.
20:41Why do they call you that?
20:42I put my witch's hat on and hand out the Halloween treats, my mask and all.
20:46Witchy-poo.
20:47Oh, they're lucky to have you.
20:49Fred, it's time to go pick them up.
20:51Would you like to ride along?
20:52I would.
20:53All right, ready to go?
20:54Ready.
20:54Okay, here we go.
21:24I guess the children are excited, ready to go home.
21:44I guess the children are excited, ready to go home.
21:46What's that loud noise?
21:58That is my air brakes.
22:00Oh, I see.
22:00And now all my four wheels are locked, and the bus will not move until I start it again.
22:05I see.
22:05Bye.
22:23Bye.
22:31Hi.
22:32Hi. How are you?
22:36Good. How are you today?
22:39What have you thought?
22:41I'll say. That's a nice guy.
22:47Welcome to bus number 17.
22:51It's the end of your school week, isn't it?
22:54You're all set to go home.
22:56That's right. Here we go.
23:02Grace's father was a teacher, so she knows a lot about schools.
23:22I know one child who kissed Grace every day when she took her home.
23:27Grace really loves children.
23:32There you are, fish.
23:37Fish are always hungry. I give them just a little bit each day.
23:43You know, when I was a boy, I really wanted to learn how to read and write
23:48the way I saw my mother and dad doing.
23:52So I was anxious to go to school.
23:54When I did go, my teacher helped me to recognize words like my name.
23:59But that was only the beginning.
24:02It took me a long time to learn to read and write.
24:06But I did.
24:07And I found I was proud even while I was learning.
24:10And I was learning lots of other things, too, like numbers.
24:15Sometimes my teacher would let me count all the children in the class.
24:20And I was learning to play better, too.
24:23Somehow learning seems to make you feel good about yourself.
24:27Have you gone to school yet?
24:30Or will you go soon so you can learn from your teacher?
24:36Teachers need children like you.
24:39They couldn't be teachers if they didn't have somebody to teach.
24:43And what they like best is someone who really wants to learn.
24:49I'm proud of you.
24:51I'm proud of you.
24:53I hope that you are proud as I am.
24:57Proud of you.
24:58I'm proud of you.
25:00I hope that you are proud of you, too.
25:05This is a name tag that I want to write three letters on.
25:11Y-O-U.
25:15And that spells you.
25:18I wish I could give it to you.
25:21I'm just a television friend, a television teacher.
25:25Your real teacher at school has lots of things to share with you.
25:29Whenever you go, I hope you can remember how many wonderful things there are to learn about,
25:36especially people, because every person is different.
25:41People may have many of the same interests, but nobody's exactly the same as anybody else.
25:48That's one thing that makes us all so wonderful.
25:52You're the only person in the whole world who is you.
25:56It's such a good feeling to know you're alive.
26:02It's such a happy feeling.
26:04You're growing inside.
26:06And when you wake up, ready to say, I think I'll make a snappy new day.
26:13It's such a good feeling, a very good feeling.
26:19The feeling, you know, that I'll be back when the week is new.
26:24And I'll have more ideas for you.
26:30And you'll have things you'll want to talk about.
26:34I will, too.
26:40Bye, special friend.
26:42Bye, back.
27:01Bye, bye.
27:02Bye, bye.
27:03Bye, sweet.
27:04Bye, bye.
27:04Bye, bye.
27:05Bye, bye.
