00:00Thank you for listening.
00:30Thank you for listening.
01:00With you, so let's make the most of this beautiful day.
01:05Since we're together, we might as well say,
01:09Would you be mine? Could you be mine?
01:12Won't you be my neighbor?
01:15Won't you please?
01:17Won't you please?
01:20Please won't you be my neighbor?
01:24Hello, neighbor.
01:26Glad we're together again today.
01:29Yep.
01:30I brought some fortune cookies to show you.
01:34You ever seen fortune cookies?
01:35This is what they look like.
01:40And I thought I'd just open one and see what the message is inside.
01:45Here it is.
01:51It says,
01:54Tendrás un visitante inesperado.
02:00Tendrás un visitante inesperado.
02:06You will have a visitor.
02:09I wonder who that visitor might be.
02:12Well, we're waiting to find out.
02:15Let's give some food, not fortune cookies, to the fish.
02:19Come along.
02:21Some food for the fish.
02:26There you are, fish.
02:29Beautiful fish.
02:31I remember the first fish I ever got when I was a little boy.
02:35It was a goldfish.
02:37Very much like these.
02:38Here's our visitor.
02:50Let's see who it is.
02:54Oh, it's Mr. McFeely.
02:56Speedy delivery.
02:57That is a speedy delivery.
03:00I found it right away at the library.
03:01How people make fortune cookies.
03:04Well, my fortune cookie said I'd have a visitor.
03:07Of course, you get a lot of visitors.
03:09That's true.
03:09But I'm glad you're here.
03:10Do you have time to watch it?
03:12I do, and I'll tell you all about it.
03:13Very good.
03:14Ready, ready.
03:15Picture, picture.
03:16That's right.
03:17Let's just show it on picture, picture.
03:19How people make fortune cookies.
03:26When people make fortune cookies,
03:28they use a big mixer like this to mix together
03:30flour, sugar, eggs, and water.
03:34Is this flour?
03:35This is flour.
03:36That's right.
03:37In fact, he's going to put another bag in.
03:44Another bag of flour?
03:45Another bag of flour.
03:47There it goes.
03:48Well, it takes a lot of flour.
03:50It certainly does,
03:51but they're going to make lots of cookies.
03:52Are those the eggs?
04:03That's the eggs.
04:07That mixture of eggs.
04:10And that will mix with the flour.
04:11You see what he's doing?
04:12You see what he's doing?
04:14He's turning this wheel to close the door.
04:18And then presses this button to start the mixer.
04:20Oh, so inside all of that's mixing together.
04:24That's right.
04:25That's right.
04:25And after a few minutes of mixing,
04:29he opens the door and he looks inside.
04:31Oh, that's much different now.
04:35Is that what's called cookie batter?
04:37Cookie batter.
04:37Yes, it is.
04:38Cookie batter.
04:42What's he adding now?
04:44It's food coloring and vanilla.
04:46You know, the food coloring gives the cookie there a yellow color,
04:49and the vanilla makes them taste like vanilla.
04:51Oh, that's very pretty to watch.
04:56Looks like a painting.
04:57Yes, it does.
04:59A moving painting.
05:08Now he closes it up again and lets the batter mix some more.
05:17A lot of mixing.
05:18A lot of mixing.
05:19And then when the batter is just right,
05:23it's poured out of the mixer and into these big buckets.
05:26I see.
05:29There it goes.
05:32Beautiful, isn't it?
05:33It certainly is.
05:37Now this woman takes the buckets of batter to the fortune cookie machine.
05:43Fortune cookie machine?
05:46That'll be interesting to see.
05:49And she pours the batter into this pan.
05:56There it goes.
05:56Then what happens?
06:00You'll see.
06:01See that hose?
06:02Yes.
06:02Well, it sucks all the batter into the holding tub.
06:05Now, in a moment, you'll see that.
06:10There it is.
06:11The holding tub.
06:13Then what happens?
06:14Well, the batter goes down through those tubes and is squirted into little round baking pans.
06:19You see?
06:20Oh, that's fun to watch.
06:22They're like little skillets, aren't they?
06:25They are.
06:26Round pans with a cookie dough.
06:27They move along this conveyor belt into an oven where the batter is baked into cookies.
06:33Out come the hot cookies.
06:34But they don't look like fortune cookies.
06:38Oh, they will.
06:39In fact, here comes my favorite part.
06:42What's that?
06:43It's when the fortunes are added.
06:45Oh.
06:45Here the machine picks up a fortune and puts it into the cookie.
06:50And at the same time, it folds the cookie into the right shape.
06:54No wonder it's your favorite part.
06:57That is fun to watch.
07:00Then the cookies are dropped into boxes to cool.
07:05There they are.
07:06And once the cookies have cooled, this man puts them into bags.
07:10And he weighs each bag and closes it up tight to keep the cookies fresh so people can enjoy them.
07:20Oh, thank you very much, Mr. McFeely.
07:23Well, you're welcome.
07:24I have more deliveries now.
07:25Oh, but before you go, would you take some fortune cookies?
07:29Oh, I'd like that.
07:30Let me see here.
07:32One for Betsy.
07:34Yes.
07:35And one for me.
07:37Thank you, thank you.
07:38We'll let you know what our fortunes are after we've opened the cookies.
07:42Very good.
07:42Of course, you know that's just for fun.
07:44Oh, I know that.
07:44But Betsy and I have always loved fortune cookies.
07:47Thanks again.
07:48You're very welcome.
07:49And thank you for helping us to know how people make them.
07:52All righty.
07:52Speedy delivery to you.
07:53Bye-bye.
07:54Bye, Mr. McFeely.
07:57Can you imagine why I'm feeling so happy right this minute?
08:02It has something to do with Mr. McFeely.
08:05It's because he was so pleased when I gave him these fortune cookies.
08:10The way he said, thank you, thank you.
08:14And how much he and Mrs. McFeely loved them.
08:17That just made me feel really good.
08:20It was like he was giving me a gift.
08:24The way he accepted mine.
08:26Let's just have some make-believe now.
08:33Trolley?
08:38Let's pretend something about fortune cookies in the neighborhood of make-believe.
08:42Where anything can happen.
08:45Okay, Trolley?
08:46Neighborhood of make-believe.
08:47Greetings, Trolley.
08:54Yes.
08:56Yes, I'm expecting great things today, Trolley.
09:01Yes, well, I wish the same to you.
09:05A beautiful day in this neighborhood.
09:10And I'm expecting great things.
09:12Speedy delivery.
09:13Oh, Mr. McFeely, I presume.
09:15Correct as usual, King Friday.
09:17And the purpose of your visit?
09:20I have a gift for you.
09:22Oh, I'm expecting great things today, Mr. McFeely.
09:27What is your offering?
09:29These fortune cookies.
09:32Fortune cookies?
09:35What a silly gift.
09:38You may place them over there for others to nibble on.
09:41Thank you and farewell.
09:43I must go look for great things.
09:46Farewell, King Friday.
09:51Oh, Mr. McFeely, how good to see you.
09:54Hello, Mayor Maggie.
09:55You don't sound your usual chipper self.
09:58Well, I'm all right, I guess.
10:00Did somebody hurt your feelings?
10:02Well, I brought something for King Friday, but he didn't seem to care about them.
10:06You mean he didn't say thank you?
10:07Oh, he said thank you, but he didn't even want to take them with him.
10:10Well, what did you bring him?
10:14This box of fortune cookies.
10:16I love fortune cookies.
10:18Wow.
10:19You do?
10:19Well, here, please have one.
10:21I'd like to see the message right away.
10:25What does it say?
10:26You do your work very well.
10:30Isn't that a great one?
10:31Oh, yes, it is.
10:32I wish King Friday had liked it as much as you.
10:35Next time I have a meeting with him, I'm going to show him mine.
10:39Well, you're welcome to as many as you like.
10:41In fact, King Friday said to leave them out and people can nibble on them.
10:45Thanks very much, Mr. McFeely.
10:47Just remember, there are some people who love your presence.
10:51Thank you, Mayor Maggie.
10:54You know how to help turn a sad cookie into a happy one.
10:59Remember, if there's anything you want, if there's anything you need,
11:05McFeely's delivery brings it to you here with speed.
11:08Yes, our speedy delivery is a speedy delivery.
11:13Speedy delivery to you.
11:15Speedy delivery, Mayor Maggie.
11:17Speedy delivery, bye-bye.
11:18Speedy delivery to you.
11:23You do your work very well.
11:27That's for sure.
11:28Oh, Mr. Aber, I was just reading my fortune cookie.
11:31Oh, well, you do do your work very well.
11:34Since my associate mayor helps me so much,
11:38let's see what your fortune cookie says.
11:43Oh, with pleasure, thanks.
11:46You have chosen a super fortune cookie.
11:49Stand back and enjoy it.
11:51You mean, you were in that fortune cookie?
12:12And you've come out to visit us?
12:18Do you have enough for everybody in this neighborhood?
12:26As well as Westwood?
12:35Oh, how about Daniel Tiger?
12:38Oh, in that clock right over there.
12:39Vámonos.
12:47¿Quién vive aqu
12:49Oh, Henrianna Pussycat lives here,
12:51and X the owl lives there.
12:56¿Y aqu
12:58This is the museum go-round.
13:00Lady Elaine Fairchild lives here.
13:03¿Y aqu
13:04Oh, that's the home of the platypus family.
13:06And this fortune cookie man is Daniel's clock.
13:13Un reloj enorme.
13:15Want to knock?
13:17Knock?
13:18Yes.
13:18Knock on the clock.
13:21Knock on the clock.
13:23Knock on the clock.
13:25Knock on the clock.
13:25Hello, Mayor McGee and Mr. Avery.
13:33Hi, Daniel.
13:33Hello, Daniel.
13:34Oh, I didn't recognize your knock.
13:36There was somebody else knocking.
13:39Well, who was it?
13:41It's hard to explain.
13:43What do you mean?
13:44It started out as a fortune cookie.
13:48A fortune cookie?
13:49Mm-hmm.
13:50Knocking on my clock?
13:54Right.
13:54Wow.
13:56Estás absolutamente correcto, Señor Tigre.
13:59Oh, my.
14:01No te haré daño.
14:03You're sure you won't hurt me?
14:05Seguro.
14:05But I never saw a live-speaking fortune cookie.
14:12Cualquier cosa es posible en el mundo de la fantasÃa.
14:16Anything can happen in make-believe.
14:19¿Qué es eso?
14:22Oh, that's the trolley.
14:24That's the trolley.
14:24DeberÃa irme.
14:25Oh, no, you don't have to go away,
14:27but I'll take you to see the trolley if you'd like to see it.
14:30Si quieres.
14:31I'll see you back in Westwood.
14:33Oh, okay.
14:33Oh, you all come visit again.
14:35I will.
14:37Good.
14:38And what about you, fortune cookie?
14:41Oh, tengo muchas galletitas de la fortuna para todos.
14:46Oh, bueno, gracias.
14:49Hasta luego.
14:50Hasta pronto, Tigre.
14:52Mi amigo.
14:53Mi amigo.
14:54Oh, oh.
15:00Oh, this is our fortune cookie man, trolley.
15:14Encantado de conocerte, trolley.
15:19Bueno, me quedaré mientras que tenga galletitas.
15:24¿Te gustarÃa probar una?
15:26Oh, here.
15:27Here, I'll open it for you, trolley.
15:30Estás en camino a la casa del señor Rogers.
15:36It says,
15:38You are on your way to Mr. Rogers' place.
15:43Todo es posible en el mundo de la fantasÃa.
15:52Well, that really is pretend, isn't it?
15:55A fortune cookie man walking around make-believe.
15:58We'll think more about that next time.
16:01Right now, I'd like you to meet a real friend of mine who makes real books.
16:06Really great books for children to read and enjoy.
16:10I asked him if I could bring you with me to his workshop, and he said,
16:14Certainly.
16:15So let's just go now to meet my friend.
16:18Eric Carl is his name.
16:20Come along.
16:21Come along.
16:35Here we are.
16:36Let's just go on in.
16:37Hello, Eric.
16:46Oh, hi.
16:49Hello, friend.
16:50I'd like you to know my television neighbor, Mr. Eric Carl.
16:53Hi.
16:54What are you working on?
16:55Right now, I'm doing papers.
16:57I paint these papers with all kinds of colors.
16:59Oh, this is a beauty.
17:01That one's still wet, I guess.
17:03That's still wet.
17:03I painted blues and blacks on this one.
17:06That's lovely.
17:08And what about these?
17:10How would you do these?
17:11This one I did, I used carpet.
17:14An old piece of carpet.
17:15An old piece of carpet, which you can get in a carpet store.
17:18They'll give it to you for free.
17:20And you paint some color, paint on this, and make a print.
17:26And this one looks like it has lines.
17:28Now, this one I used also a piece of carpet, painted some color on here,
17:32and dragged it across this way and this way.
17:37Isn't that fun?
17:38Oh, and look at these beautiful pieces.
17:40These are dry now.
17:43What beautiful papers you make.
17:47And someday these will all end up in your books.
17:50Yes.
17:51Cut out little pieces, paste them down, make a collage.
17:55Those are my illustrations.
17:56Would you show us how you do some of that?
17:57I'll be happy to.
17:58Good.
18:01Well, I'm right now preparing my papers.
18:05Oh, good.
18:06And you can watch me.
18:06I like that.
18:07And help me, too, if you like to.
18:08Oh, sure.
18:09Okay.
18:09Now, what kind of paper is this?
18:12This is a tissue paper that you can buy in art stores, the stationery stores.
18:17Or sometimes when you buy a gift, it might be wrapped in tissue paper.
18:21You can use that.
18:22Oh, good.
18:22Yeah.
18:22And then you put paint right on that.
18:24And then I put paint on it.
18:26Oh, let me see.
18:27Okay.
18:32That's yellow, huh?
18:33That's yellow.
18:34And you just put it wherever you want to put it.
18:40And in this, there's just no mistakes, is there?
18:48No, no, you can't make mistakes, really.
18:52And what I do, I always leave a little band here so I can lift it and I won't get paint
18:58on my finger.
18:59But this looks kind of dull, but this looks kind of dull, so I'll add something else to
19:04it and see what happens.
19:05Good.
19:06That makes it different, doesn't it?
19:17Yeah.
19:17Yeah.
19:18And then sometimes I do this, I turn my brush around and go like so.
19:27Eric, have you always liked doing things like this?
19:30I mean, with paint and everything.
19:31Well, I always liked to draw.
19:33When I was a little child, I liked to draw.
19:36And my father used to draw pictures for me.
19:38He did?
19:39Yeah.
19:40And my nursery school teacher, my first grade teacher, recognized that I was pretty good
19:47at it.
19:48And she asked my mother to come to school and told her that I was talented and I drew well
19:54and that she and my father should nurture that.
19:56And they did.
19:57Isn't that wonderful?
19:58I bet she put some of your pictures up on the wall, too.
20:00They did.
20:01My mother walked into the school, there were all my pictures in the hallway and she didn't
20:05even know it was her Eric.
20:07But the teacher told her, it's your Eric.
20:09Your Eric.
20:09My Eric.
20:10Wow.
20:10She must have been great.
20:12Now, this looks very nice.
20:14Are you going to add more to it?
20:16Well, I think I'm going to ask you to add a little to that.
20:18Would you like to help me?
20:19Of course.
20:20Okay, you help me.
20:21First, you have to put on a smog.
20:23Oh, all right.
20:24And I got one for you right here.
20:30You look great.
20:32I feel like a real artist, okay.
20:34Now, how would you like to put dots in this?
20:38Sure, anything.
20:39Like here.
20:40You just dip it in here.
20:41Dip it in and all over we put in dots.
20:44Great.
20:45I think I'm going to hire you.
20:51That's fun.
20:55You tell me when that's enough.
20:58That's plenty.
21:00Terrific.
21:01Well, we now have another sheet in my collection of colored tissue paper.
21:07Now, that has to dry too, doesn't it?
21:08That has to dry.
21:09Well, we can't use it when it's wet.
21:11But then after a while, you'll cut that and make it into pictures.
21:15That's right.
21:16So we'll put that away.
21:23And I'll show you how I make a picture.
21:25Good.
21:29I have started a, I have started a, what is this?
21:34A seal.
21:34A seal.
21:35You're right.
21:36And what I do is, I have here my glue.
21:41I have a brush in here too, but it's a different brush than I use for painting.
21:45It's a softer brush.
21:47And that's how it goes.
21:49Well, you obviously already cut that one out.
21:52Yes, so I could show it to you.
21:54See, and then it goes here.
21:56And that, that's it.
21:58Now, it's not quite finished.
22:00I add little details with, with crayons.
22:07Put an eye in here.
22:10And a little, a little black.
22:15And we'd have to put in the, the mustache here.
22:18Hmm.
22:19Hmm.
22:20And with a little pink, let's see, a little, there's a little pink.
22:25Here, we put a little, the mouth in here.
22:29And I like to put some dots here.
22:32Just, you know, when you look at a seal, they shine and have these little, like, dots here.
22:39And the best part is, when I finish a picture, guess what the best part is.
22:44What?
22:45Put my name to it.
22:51Eric Carle.
22:52Let me hold it up and check.
22:53Now, this picture, have you used in one of your books, one like this?
23:06Yes.
23:07And head to toe, I used a seal pretty much like this.
23:11I wonder if I could see that.
23:12Yes.
23:13Want to take off your coat?
23:15Oh, sure.
23:16I'll keep on mine.
23:17Sure.
23:17Alfred, come on over here.
23:25Oh, a lot of books that you have.
23:27Oh, art books, books and animals.
23:30You must love books.
23:31Yes.
23:31Yeah.
23:32And here are my books.
23:34I could.
23:34And I'd like to show you the book in which I have a seal pretty much like we did together.
23:41And this book is called From Head to Toe.
23:45Head to Toe.
23:46Head to Toe.
23:48Oh, isn't that beautiful?
23:49That's what they call an end sheet.
23:52End sheet.
23:52Yep.
23:53And this is the inside title.
23:55Head to Toe.
23:59And it says here, I'm a penguin and I turn my head.
24:03Can you do it?
24:04I can do it.
24:07Great.
24:10I'm a giraffe and I bend my neck.
24:13Can you do it?
24:16I can do it.
24:17You can do it.
24:18I can do it.
24:19You can do it, too.
24:21I'm a buffalo and I raise my shoulders.
24:23Can you do it?
24:25I can do it.
