00:31It's a beautiful day in this neighborhood
00:33A beautiful day for a neighbor
00:33Would you be mine, could you be mine?
00:38It's a neighborly day in this beauty
00:40Would a neighborly day for a beauty
00:41Would you be mine, could you be mine?
00:46I've always wanted to have a neighbor just like you
00:50I've always wanted to have a neighbor just like you
00:53Thank you. I've always wanted to live in a neighborhood with you, so let's make the most of this beautiful day. Since we're together, we might as well say, would you be mine? Could you be mine? Won't you be my neighbor? Won't you please? Won't you please? Please, won't you be my neighbor?
01:20Hi, neighbor. You see that big suitcase that I brought with me? Well, it doesn't have suits in it. No, I'm not going on a trip. It has something else very special in it, though. Do you remember yesterday we were talking about things on television that were just pretend?
01:40Well, I was talking with a young friend of mine who said, you know something that I think's pretend? The neighborhood of make-believe. And of course, my young friend was right.
01:55Many of the characters in the neighborhood of make-believe are puppets that I make talk. I'll show you, because that's what's in here. Puppets that I make talk.
02:11I sometimes use this little bag to carry them. And I always have soft material, so that they'll be well taken care of.
02:27Here's a puppet that lives in a little schoolhouse in a tree. Henrietta Pussycat.
02:34You have a beautiful meow. A meow.
02:37Yes, Henrietta. And here is an owl who is her neighbor. My name is X, the owl. Hello, Henrietta.
02:47Meow, meow, meow, meow. Beautiful meow.
02:51There are two of the puppets.
02:55Here's someone who is the curator of the museum go-round.
03:01Hello, friends. My name's Lady Elaine Fairchild.
03:07And here's someone who manufactures rocking chairs.
03:16I'm a man who manufactures. Hello.
03:21Cornflake especially.
03:28And here are some people who live in a castle.
03:33How do you do, ladies and gentlemen? How do you do?
03:42Would you take a close look at King Friday the 13th and pretend that you have a puppet on your hand?
03:49And just have your puppet say something to the king. Have your puppet tell him something.
03:55Yes? Oh, I see. Lovely. Yeah.
04:04Was it a scary thing that your puppet told the king? Or a happy thing? Or a sad thing?
04:12You see, puppets can talk about anything.
04:14Here is the queen.
04:19Queen Sarah.
04:23Well, how do you do, Friday?
04:24Well, how do you do, Queen Sarah, my dear?
04:29See, you can make them kiss.
04:31Here's Prince Tuesday.
04:44Grand-père.
04:44Bonjour, mes amis.
04:47Félicitations.
04:52And who lives in the clock?
04:55Daniel Striper Tiger's my name.
04:58Hi.
04:58And somebody who always sings what he says.
05:07Oh, I'm happy to be here today. Hello, my friends.
05:16And a donkey who lives someplace else.
05:19Hee-haw. Hello there. Hello, friends.
05:23You know, a filmmaker made a movie of me behind the castle with the king and queen on my hands
05:31one day when we were working on the neighborhood of make-believe.
05:35And I'd like you to see that film.
05:38You'll also see my friend, Mr. Barker, who makes the platypus puppets talk.
05:43There, let's take a look at that film taken in the neighborhood of make-believe as we were working.
06:00See how I put on the king and the queen?
06:08And then put them through and make them walk out in front of the castle.
06:19And then I walked over
06:31to see the platypuses.
06:37There's Elsie Jean and Dr. Bill.
06:41There's my friend, Mr. Barker.
07:05There's my friend, Mr. Barker.
07:12We've been good friends for many years.
07:15And that's the way we usually greet each other with that handshake salute.
07:23Now, there's one other puppet, Harriet Elizabeth Cowell.
07:29Now, can you imagine who makes her voice?
07:34One of my neighbors in this neighborhood.
07:38Let's go over where that neighbor works.
07:41I'd like you to see who it is.
07:44I'll take Harriet Elizabeth Cowell and Don Quixote in this bag.
07:50Can you guess?
07:51Come with me, I'll show you.
07:59Hi, boss.
08:15Hello, Fred.
08:15I'll be right with you as soon as I get this hose clamp on here.
08:19What are you doing?
08:21I'm repairing a washer and dryer.
08:25Just one machine?
08:26One machine.
08:27You mean it does both the washing and drying inside here?
08:31Mm-hmm.
08:31That's right.
08:33Hot water goes in there and the cold water goes in.
08:38These clamps are sometimes very hard to get on.
08:42When I was little, I thought that washing machines and drying machines were kind of magic.
08:49There's no magic about them.
08:51It's just a machine, Fred.
08:52Just one second and then I'll put it right up.
08:59It's so nice to be able to just put your dirty clothes and sheets and pillowcases in that little
09:04door over there and push one of these dials and have it all happen.
09:10And it washes, it spin dries them and rinses them.
09:15It does.
09:15What would Harriet Cowell say about that?
09:19Harriet Cowell?
09:21Is it really you?
09:23I'll say.
09:26Well, isn't this a surprise?
09:28I'll say.
09:29It may be a surprise for some of my friends.
09:31I wanted them to know who did the voices of the different puppets.
09:35You know, who made them talk?
09:36That's a good idea.
09:37Yee-haw, Harriet Cowell.
09:39Well, Don Quixote, how are you today?
09:42Well, I'm just great.
09:43Good.
09:44What's this down here?
09:46That's a washer-dryer.
09:49Washer-dryer?
09:50Mm-hmm.
09:50Well, what about washer-dryer-sorter-dumper?
09:54Washer-dryer-sorter-dumper.
09:57That's even hard to say, isn't it?
09:58Well, that's right.
09:59But you know we use it in some place else.
10:02That we do.
10:03And it's stored right here.
10:05Right here, right here, Bob?
10:06Mm-hmm.
10:07That's correct, right?
10:08It's stored right over here.
10:09Okay.
10:10I want to show them the washer-dryer-sorter-dumper too, okay?
10:13Fine.
10:15You see?
10:17This is the machine.
10:19And people have to work it underneath here.
10:25See?
10:26You know how the potato goes along like that,
10:29and then goes up to the washer and so forth?
10:33Well, I can find a potato and we'll actually do it.
10:35Do you have one?
10:36Let's see.
10:37We could try.
10:38Do you see it?
10:39The washer-dryer-sorter-dumper.
10:45It dumps it right into the potato train over there.
10:50And we set all this up to make someplace else.
10:54Have one?
10:55Oh, good.
10:56Let's put it here.
10:57I had to test it because it needed some repairs,
10:59and I don't know whether it's going to work all right or not,
11:02but we'll try it.
11:03Let's try it.
11:04Okay.
11:05Okay, it comes along like this.
11:12Slowly, carefully.
11:15When I get up, when I get up in position, Fred.
11:17Okay.
11:19All right.
11:19Now bring it along here.
11:23There you go.
11:26Did you get it?
11:27With a little help.
11:28See, it's very hard to make it good.
11:30There we go.
11:31Now I'll see what I can do without dropping it.
11:41Turn.
11:43Up.
11:44Come on up.
11:44You can do it.
11:45Up, up, up, up.
11:46Up, up, up.
11:47Wait till I get out there and you can dump it into mine.
11:49Okay.
11:50Ready?
11:50Mm-hmm.
11:54Nope.
11:54Yep.
11:57How are you coming?
11:59Now dump.
12:04We shouldn't play with food like that, but there's your potato.
12:06Okay.
12:06Well, thank you, Bob.
12:10I just wanted to show my friends some of the things about television
12:15that just weren't real.
12:17I think that's an important thing to show.
12:19Sure.
12:19You know, some of those scary cartoons and things, they're just made out of pictures and stuff.
12:24I know it.
12:27Showing them all the other puppets, you know, the voices and things that we make.
12:30See you later, Harriet.
12:32And donkey hoodie.
12:33Okay, Bob.
12:34Hee Haw.
12:35I'll see.
12:36See you later.
12:36Bye.
12:37So long, Fred.
12:38Had you guessed it was Bob Trow, who does the voice for Harry Elizabeth Cuff?
13:04I'll say.
13:06She likes to say, I'll say.
13:13Here's a picture here I'd like you to see.
13:16Who do you think plays the part of
13:22Bob Dogg in the neighborhood of Make Believe?
13:27Remember yesterday we pretended that Francois Clemons was taking pictures at the fancy dress party?
13:35Well, suppose he and Bob Dogg are together now.
13:40They could go and visit Lady Elaine, too, in a little bit.
13:45But they could be together right now as the trolley comes by the castle in the neighborhood of Make Believe.
13:52Okay, you hold that and then I can, I'll show you the pictures.
14:04Let me see those.
14:05Okay.
14:08You like that?
14:09There's the king and the queen.
14:10Right.
14:11And then I took one of Henrietta.
14:15Now, there's everybody.
14:21That's right.
14:21Then we all got together and took one.
14:23Tell you what, why don't I take one of you right now, Bob Dogg?
14:25Me?
14:26Yeah.
14:27Where are you going to stand?
14:28Oh, well, I'll just stand right here.
14:30Okay, and I'll come over here.
14:31You want me to smile?
14:33Yeah, why don't you give me a nice big smile? Hold still now.
14:37Oh, got it.
14:37Got it.
14:38Okay, you want to see it?
14:39Yeah, I'd like to see it.
14:41Okay.
14:43You like that?
14:44Yeah, that's all right.
14:45The teeth.
14:46You know, some people are afraid of my teeth even when I'm smiling.
14:51Oh, yeah?
14:52Well, then why don't I take another picture of you with your lips covering your teeth?
14:55That's a good idea, Professor.
14:56Okay.
14:57Where do you want to stand this time?
14:58Well, I'll just sort of scoot over here.
15:01Okay, and I'll scoot over here.
15:03All right.
15:03All right, hold still again.
15:06That's nice.
15:06All right, there we go.
15:08Brought them?
15:09Uh-huh.
15:10Okay, you like that one?
15:13That's a funny one, isn't it?
15:14Uh-huh.
15:15But the teeth aren't showing.
15:16That's good.
15:17That's it.
15:18Why don't I take one of you?
15:19Well, look, I'm going to show you something first.
15:22How do you like them together?
15:24Well, I kind of like them both.
15:26You like them both?
15:27But what I'd really like is to take one of you now.
15:29Okay, all right.
15:30Show them how this works.
15:31Okay, first of all, you look through here.
15:33Look through here.
15:34That's right, and then you have to push this button.
15:36Oh, okay.
15:37And then you pull the picture out.
15:38Pull it out.
15:38All right.
15:39Okay, I'm going to stand over there and put my camera case there.
15:43Is this back far enough?
15:45That's far enough, and be sure to hold the camera steady.
15:47I will.
15:48Okay?
15:48Yeah.
15:49Now, I look in here.
15:50That's right.
15:51And I push this button.
15:53That's right.
15:54Okay, here goes.
15:55Here goes.
15:55You hold stay, too.
15:59Okay.
15:59Now, where is it?
16:01You pull?
16:01You pull it out right here.
16:02Oh.
16:03There you go.
16:04Hey, that's nice.
16:06Hey.
16:07That's a nice picture.
16:08Wait a minute.
16:10Who's that in the background?
16:11Well, that's Lady Elaine Fairchild.
16:14Yeah, there she is.
16:15Over by our museum ground.
16:16Let's go show her our pictures.
16:18Okay.
16:18Okay?
16:19I'll get my case.
16:24Hi, Lady Elaine.
16:25Hi, Lady Elaine.
16:25Hello, sweets.
16:27How are things?
16:28We're just fine.
16:29We'd like to show you some of the pictures I've been taking.
16:31He's good.
16:32Well, I have exactly eight seconds to spare.
16:35Well, then I'll hurry.
16:36Eight seconds.
16:37Mm-hmm.
16:37Here they are.
16:38Really cool.
16:39My, this museum-go-round of mine is just...
16:42Oh, here.
16:42You ready?
16:43Yeah, sure.
16:43All right.
16:44Who's that?
16:44Uh, that's you.
16:46That's right.
16:47With a very pleasant person in the background.
16:50I wonder who that is.
16:52And who's that?
16:53That is Bob Dog showing his teeth.
16:55That's right.
16:56And one...
16:57Here's another one.
16:58Who's that?
16:59Uh, Bob Dog not showing his teeth.
17:02That's right.
17:03Now, I have time for one more, and that's all.
17:05One more.
17:06One more I want to show you.
17:07One special one.
17:08There's one more.
17:09Who's that?
17:10Uh-huh.
17:11That's Lady Elaine Fairchild yesterday.
17:15That's right, with her party dress on.
17:17Wasn't that a nice party?
17:18Yes, but I still think a wedding would have been nicer.
17:22But now I'm interested in something else.
17:26And what's that?
17:27What's that?
17:29This.
17:30What does that stand for?
17:31MGR.
17:34My great romance.
17:35Uh, museum-go-round, of course.
17:39Now, take that brush.
17:41Okay.
17:41Uh-huh.
17:42What do you want me to do with it?
17:43Stick it in the paint and add two letters to my sign here.
17:48Oh.
17:48Two letters.
17:49Uh-huh.
17:50Oh, what two letters, Lady Elaine?
17:52T.V., of course.
17:54T.V.?
17:55M-G-R-T-V.
18:04M-G-R-T-V, museum-go-round television.
18:09I'm starting my own television station.
18:12You're starting your own TV station right here?
18:15You heard it.
18:16Your own television station?
18:17Mm-hmm.
18:18Really?
18:18That's it.
18:20Come on, now.
18:21Come on inside, and I'll show you my studio.
18:24I'm expecting some more equipment to arrive any minute now.
18:27That sounds exciting.
18:28Come on, doggy.
18:29Come on, now.
18:30Now, there's a stepladder and some of the lights and the microphone boom.
18:42What do you think?
18:44Lady Elaine, this place is fantastic.
18:47Yeah, and of course, right over here, you see where we'll do the interview shows.
18:51Uh-huh.
18:51I mean, when the TV camera comes, you can work it if you want to.
18:55I've always wanted to work a TV camera.
18:58Well, sure, just put yours right down.
19:00Okay.
19:00Hey, hey, that may be it coming now, my delivery.
19:04What?
19:05You mean your camera is coming by air?
19:07Sure, Yoshi's bringing it.
19:09Oh, there she comes now.
19:10Hi, Lady Elaine.
19:11Hi, Yosh.
19:12Is this what you really ordered?
19:14That's it.
19:15That's exactly what I want.
19:16Yosh, what do you think of this place?
19:18I don't believe it.
19:19I think it's great.
19:21Television studio.
19:23Can we work it, Lady Elaine?
19:24Well, of course.
19:25There's a microphone.
19:27France, why don't you work the camera?
19:29Okay.
19:29And, Yoshi, you work the microphone.
19:31Fine.
19:32And I'll just interview you, Bob Dogg.
19:34You just sit right over here.
19:36That's it.
19:37Yeah, we'll just do a little program right here, you and I.
19:39Okay.
19:40Let me just test this out for a minute.
19:41That's good, yeah.
19:42Okay.
19:43Does it work okay?
19:44Yeah, look how it's...
19:45Isn't that fun?
19:45How are you doing, Yoshi?
19:46Just let it down so that everybody can...
19:48Here, how's that?
19:49That's it.
19:50That's a little closer to her, isn't it?
19:52Closer to her?
19:52Oh, I'm sorry about that.
19:53I mean, if she's going to interview me, it should be...
19:54That's right.
19:55That's good.
19:56Okay, you sit, Fran.
19:57Well, just as I'm focusing.
19:59Yeah, good.
20:00You sit, Yosh?
20:01Yes, I think so.
20:02Okay, big band ready.
20:04Testing, Juan.

21:20Let's have a big hand.
21:36Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
21:42Oh, that's great.
22:11Okay, shut up, everybody.
22:12Now, now, that was really great.
22:17Do you want to work the camera?
22:18Oh, I like that.
22:19Okay, uh, France?
22:21Yes?
22:22Let Bob Dogg work the camera.
22:24Okay.
22:25Now, everyone out there in television land, Bob Dogg is going to work the camera,
22:30and the two singers of the century, Ito and Clemens, are going to sing for us, won't you?
22:36Oh, how about that?
22:38Okay.
22:38Okay.
22:39That's it.
22:40Okay, I'll move the chair, Ito.
22:42Why don't we do Pretending?
22:43Can we leave the next one there?
22:44Okay.
22:44Okay.
22:44I had a big friend.
22:46What are we singing?
22:47Why don't we do Pretending?
22:48Pretending?
22:49Okay.
22:49Okay, I'll start the first.
22:50Okay.
22:50Go on.
22:50Okay.
22:51Pretending you're a pilot or a princess.
22:54Aww.
22:55Pretending you're a doctor or a king.
22:58Of course.
22:59Pretending you're a mother or a father.
23:03By pretending you can be most anything you want to think about.
23:11By pretending.
23:13Just pretending.
23:16You can try out many things by pretending.
23:22Your own make-up play can be different every day.
23:26Sure.
23:27But it's your work.
23:28It's important, Pretend.
23:34You can try out life by pretending.
23:41You can even say you're a baby today by pretending.
23:53Pretending.
23:57You can try out life by pretending.
24:01Let's hear it for those, sweetheart.
24:04Oh my gosh, sure.
24:04Let's hear it for those.
24:06Oh yeah, that is just great.
24:11Well, now thank you friends, and this is your neighborhood television station MGR TV
24:20Signing off for today.
24:23You brought your life on the summer, come on.
24:25You're making a plan.
24:27That's just what it's for.
24:29It's nice that we can sing together again, won't you?
24:31Sure.
24:32It's a pleasure.
24:34So Lady Elaine is going to have her own television station.
24:39Which puppets do you think would like to make up a television show of their own?
24:46I'm not so sure I'd be able to.
24:50Well, Edgar, you could always try if you're interested.
24:56Maybe I could talk about clocks and loving and things like that.
25:03Sure, Daniel.
25:04Whatever you'd like to do to make up a television program.
25:10Moi, je peux toujours chanter à l'enfant de la patrie.
25:16Et tout ça?
25:17Of course, grand-père.
25:19That would be up to you.
25:20Each person makes up what he or she would like to make up.
25:29I would give long speeches on television.
25:33I would say that if it were not for me, there would be no television.
25:39What kind of program do you think that Queen Sarah might like to make up?
25:54something about her work with plants, her work with the microscope?
26:07What about cornflake especially?
26:08Well, I could just show everybody how to make rocking chairs if they wanted to learn.
26:19That's my business and I love it.
26:22That would be up to you, Henrietta.
26:32I think you'd be just great, Henrietta.
26:34I might even like to tell people how to fly.
26:39Flyin' with X.
26:41My beautiful meow-meow.
26:42Meow-meow.
26:43Meow-meow, beautiful meow-meow.
26:44Meow-meow.
26:45Meow.
26:46Meow-meow.
26:46That's serious business.
26:49That's serious business.
27:00Those puppets.
27:03That's part of my business.
27:09You know why I have that kind of business?
27:11Because I care about you.
27:13People like you.
27:16I make up television programs for children
27:19and their families.
27:21It's such a good feeling to know you're alive.
27:25It's such a happy feeling you're growing inside.
27:29And when you wake up ready to say,
27:33I think I'll make a snappy new day.
27:37It's such a good feeling, a very good feeling.
27:41The feeling you know that I'll be back
27:44when the day is new and I'll have more.
27:48Ideas for you.
27:51And you'll have things you'll want to talk about.
27:55I will too.
27:58You always make it a special day for me.
28:02I like you just the way you are.
28:04I'll be back tomorrow.
28:05I'll be back tomorrow.
