00:00Thank you for listening.
00:30Thank you for listening.
01:00Thank you for listening.
01:29Oh, I brought this backpack.
01:32See this?
01:33It's a pack that you wear on your back.
01:36And I'd like you to see what's in here.
01:42I have two things in here.
01:43Can you imagine what they might be?
01:46Well, I'll show you the first one.
01:49A picture of a big elephant and a baby elephant.
01:54And I wanted you to see this particularly because we're going to go to visit this baby elephant
02:02where it's living with some big elephants right now.
02:07As a matter of fact, why don't we just go together to visit the baby elephant.
02:13Come along.
02:14Oh, here we are at the elephant place.
02:27Come on.
02:28Hi, Willie.
02:33Fred, how are you doing?
02:34Just fine, thanks.
02:35I'd like you to know my television neighbor, Mr. Willie Tyson.
02:38How are we doing?
02:39What are you doing here?
02:41Just getting ready to feed our girls.
02:42Got a little hay here.
02:43We're going to take them in and feed them.
02:44You call them the girls?
02:45Yes.
02:46Now, how many are there?
02:48We have three adult girls and then one little baby.
02:51Could I watch you feed them?
02:53Well, certainly.
02:53Why don't you come with me?
02:54I'd be glad to.
03:01Hey, girl.
03:02Back up.
03:08Okay.
03:09I just want to slide in here.
03:10Sure.
03:11You feed the girls.
03:13Back up.
03:14Back up.
03:16Back up.
03:17Good.
03:21Are you ready for your dinner?
03:24You just want to slide right over here.
03:25We'll bring one of the...
03:28All right.
03:29Move up.
03:30This is kind of the favorite aunt of the baby.
03:34If you would like to take this, we'll go down and feed the...
03:36Back up.
03:37Okay.
03:38Back up.
03:41There you go.
03:42Back up, Mojo.
03:44You like this?
03:45All right, Tosh.
03:46Come here.
03:47Move up.
03:52Good.
03:53And that's what they eat.
03:56This is what they eat.
03:56Pretty much all day long, we give them the hay.
03:59They get to eat this all the time.
04:02They get some fruits and vegetables at the end of the day.
04:04Oh, and here's the little one.
04:07Yes.
04:08And she's actually starting to eat hay like the grown-ups now.
04:14I just want to watch you eat.
04:25I just want to watch you eat.
04:28Is that all right?
04:28Why do you have them in here?
04:39Well, this is a stall that we bring them into just to kind of keep them all together.
04:46And we'll, from here, this is where we do most of everything with the elephants.
04:52We water them.
04:53And then a little later, we'll go ahead and take them over to the other side and bathe them.
04:58Oh, and then you give them a bath, do you?
05:00Yes.
05:01They get a bath every day.
05:03But you take such good care of them.
05:04They must teach you an awful lot about elephants.
05:07Yes, they do.
05:08They teach us quite a lot to, helps us kind of understand all the elephants in the rest of the world.
05:15They're in the wild and how they act and how they behave.
05:19So we do a lot of observations on them and watch them all the time.
05:24And they use their trunk almost like a hand.
05:27Yes, just like a hand.
05:28Anything you can do with your two hands and ten fingers, they can do with that trunk.
05:33They actually drink with it.
05:35They breathe through it.
05:37They eat, obviously.
05:38And they also, when they're outside, they throw sand and mud all over them.
05:46And they've eaten their hay, a lot of it.
05:49Then you say you give them water?
05:51Yes, yes.
05:52They're taking them, go ahead and water them now.
05:54How do you do that?
05:56We just have a big tub with a garden hose.
05:58And we just let it run until they are full.
06:02Could I watch you?
06:03Most certainly.
06:03We just want to sneak out this way over here.
06:05Okay.
06:15Step in here.
06:18I got...
06:19What do I do?
06:21Just open up that little valve.
06:22Get over.
06:23Get over.
06:23Get over.
06:25All the way up.
06:27Get all the way up.
06:28There you go.
06:29Just hold it just like that.
06:31There you go.
06:33These guys will drink about 40 gallons of water every day.
06:47How much?
06:47About 40 gallons every day.
06:49Right now, they'll probably drink about 12 gallons.
06:54We water them four different times every day.
06:56So each time they drink about 10 or 12 gallons.
07:00And the trunk will hold almost two gallons of water each time they suck it up.
07:05But since the trunk is like their nose, they can't draw it up like a straw.
07:12So they draw it about halfway up into their trunk.
07:15And then you see they blow it right into their mouth.
07:17Have you always loved animals?
07:24Yes.
07:25Yes, I have.
07:26Oh, growing up I had a lot of dogs and cats and birds.
07:30And then actually while I was going to college, I actually got a part-time job at a zoo and
07:38started working there.
07:39But even when you were a little boy?
07:41Yes.
07:42Even then, I really liked animals.
07:44Really had never seen elephants growing up.
07:46I just had the dogs and the cats, all the small stuff.
07:49Uh-huh.
07:50And then it wasn't until I started working around zoos that I actually started seeing
07:54elephants and started liking being around the elephants.
07:59Is the baby going to get some?
08:02Are you going to come and get some?
08:05Yeah.
08:06And she knows.
08:08She has to kind of wait her turn.
08:11She sneaks in and gets the trunk every now and then.
08:14So that's another thing she had to learn with the adults was sticking her trunk in there.
08:19Initially she just started blowing bubbles.
08:21That's how she started learning.
08:22She'd blow bubbles in the water and then she learned to suck it in and then blow it into
08:27her mouth real quick.
08:28But she started, it was kind of funny to watch it because initially she'd just start blowing
08:32bubbles in the water just to see how her trunk worked.
08:35But then she learned.
08:36And then she learned.
08:37Here she comes.
08:38When we're done watering we'll go ahead and move them on over and give them all their baths.
08:42The bath?
08:43The bath, yes.
08:44They get a bath every day.
08:45Oh I'd love to see that.
08:46Okay.
08:47Okay.
08:48Okay.
08:49Okay, Fred.
08:50We'll just cut that off.
08:51We'll let them finish up.
08:52And we'll get ready for the water.
08:55Okay.
08:56Now we're going to go ahead and move them on over and give them all their baths for the
09:00day.
09:01The bath?
09:02The bath, yes.
09:03They get a bath every day.
09:04Oh I'd love to see that.
09:06Okay.
09:10Okay, Fred, we'll just cut that off, we'll let them finish up, and we'll get ready to
09:20give the elephants their baths.
09:22If you want to, Shirley?
09:24Fred, how you doing?
09:25This is Shirley.
09:26Oh, hi.
09:27Hi, Fred.
09:28Hi, Shirley.
09:29One of our other handlers here.
09:30If you want to go with her, she'll get you over next door, and you'll get the elephants
09:32set up and get ready for their baths.
09:33Get to see their baths.
09:34Good.
09:35Come on.
09:36See you in a minute.
09:39Mighty big bathroom, huh?
09:40It certainly is.
09:41I don't see any showers there.
09:43Well, we'll use the hose.
09:44Oh, the hose.
09:45Mm-hmm.
09:46Are they coming?
09:47I don't know.
09:48Are they coming?
09:49Hello, mother.
09:50It's the mama.
09:51Get over.
09:52And that's the baby.
09:54Good.
09:55Good.
09:56Good.
09:57Good.
09:58Good.
09:59Good.
10:00Good.
10:01Good.
10:02Good.
10:03Good.
10:04Good.
10:05Good.
10:06Good.
10:07Good.
10:08Good.
10:09Good.
10:10Good.
10:11Good.
10:12mรชmef ะฒั€ะตะผะตะฝะธ.
10:13It's good.
10:15Good.
10:16Good.
10:18Good.
10:19Good.
10:20Good.
10:21Good.
10:23Good.
10:24Good.
10:26Good.
10:27Good.
10:28Hard.
10:29Good.
10:30Yep.
10:31Good.
10:32Okay.
10:33Good.
10:34Nice.
10:35Good.
10:36Good.
10:37What's he going to do now?
10:58He's going to soak them up with soap.
10:59Oh, with soap?
11:00Mm-hmm.
11:01Oh, she seems to like it.
11:28Did you like that?
11:30Look.
11:30Oh, look.
11:31She's scratching herself.
11:40Brent stops now.
11:42Oh.
11:42Oh.
11:59Oh.
12:00Oh.
12:00Oh.
12:00Oh.
12:00Oh.
12:00Oh.
12:01Oh.
12:01Oh, that must feel so good.
12:03He loves the water.
12:05He likes playing it.
12:31What a great shower.
12:37What a great shower, I'll say.
12:39Good luck.
12:40Now, what do they like to do after their shower?
12:43Next thing we want to do is just get them outside, let them play in the sand.
12:46They like to coat themselves, play in it, and get a little sunshine.
12:50So that's where we'll be taking them right now.
12:52Well, I suppose I better go back to my place.
12:55Listen, I go that way, but I hope to see you outside, but I hope to see you outside, but I'll hope to see you outside, but thank you, Shirley, and thank you.
12:59Okay, it's a pleasure.
13:00What a treat to be with you.
13:01Glad you stopped by me.
13:02And thank you for all that you mean and do for these animals.
13:07Okay, bye-bye.
13:08See ya.
13:38Did you like that visit?
13:52I certainly did.
13:54Our friends, the elephants.
13:57You know, I told you that there were two things in here.
14:01The picture was the first one, and this is the second.
14:06Again, it's a videotape of people making backpacks, like this one.
14:12So why don't we just watch it together on Picture Picture, how people make backpacks.
14:19And I'll just read this as we watch it together.
14:21When people make backpacks, they start with a big roll of material.
14:31This man rolls out the amount that he'll need onto a table.
14:36And he cuts a large section of the material, and then he puts a pattern on top of it.
14:51A pattern is like a picture of the different shapes he needs to cut.
15:03Using this electric knife, he carefully cuts each section of the pattern.
15:11You see, each section is a part of the backpack.
15:23See the different shapes and sizes of the material now?
15:49In another part of the factory, this woman brings some foam pieces to this man, who is making the shoulder straps.
15:59He folds the black material over the foam, and then he sews it together.
16:15In fact, he sews right through the foam and both sides of the material to make it all stay together well.
16:31Next, he'll sew on the buckle.
16:45Now, he attaches the shoulder straps to the back part of the backpack.
16:58Both of the shoulder straps sewn on.
17:15At another sewing station,
17:26This woman is sewing the zipper onto the side part of the backpack.
17:38Lots of different parts of backpacks.
17:50There it is. See the zipper?
17:52See the zipper?
17:56Now, the front part, the back part, and the side part are all ready to be sewn together.
18:04Along with this pocket.
18:11Along with this pocket.
18:13Along with this pocket.
18:19Along with this pocket.
18:20Along with this pocket.
18:21Along with this pocket.
18:22Along with this pocket.
18:23Along with this pocket.
18:24Along with this pocket.
18:25Along with this pocket.
18:26Along with this pocket.
18:27Along with this pocket.
18:28Along with this pocket.
18:29Along with this pocket.
18:30Along with this pocket.
18:31Along with this pocket.
18:32Along with this pocket.
18:33Along with this pocket.
18:34Along with this pocket.
18:35Along with this pocket.
18:36Along with this pocket.
18:37Along with this pocket.
18:38Along with this pocket.
18:39Along with this pocket.
18:40Along with this pocket.
18:41Along with this pocket.
18:42Along with this pocket.
18:43Along with this pocket.
18:44Along with this pocket.
18:45Along with this pocket.
18:46Along with this pocket.
18:47Along with this pocket.
18:48And now she sews on the back part
19:01with the shoulder straps.
19:14Now she turns it outside in.
19:18Because she first sewed the parts together inside out.
19:25She zips it up, and the backpack is almost finished.
19:37Now this woman is going to hook on the adjustable straps.
19:44And put the straps through the buckles.
19:53So people of different sizes can use the backpack comfortably.
19:59Did you ever see a backpack that looked like that?
20:10Now she checks it to make sure everything is just right.
20:15And that's how people make backpacks.
20:18How people make backpacks.
20:22Isn't that interesting?
20:24All the interesting things that people do in this world.
20:28Now let's have some make-believe.
20:34Trolley.
20:38Maybe we could pretend something about an elephant and a backpack.
20:45Let's try that.
20:46Okay, Trolley.
20:47Neighborhood of make-believe.
20:53Yes, Trolley.
20:55Yes.
20:56Very good.
20:57Yes.
20:58And you're a splendid neighbor, H.J.
21:02Oh, thank you, King Friday.
21:04Want to see a picture of my mother and father elephant?
21:06Of course.
21:07Where is it?
21:08Just a minute.
21:09I'll fetch it.
21:09Oh, thank you.
21:11Oh, my.
21:13I do enjoy an occasional bit of banter with a pachyderm, don't you?
21:19Ahem.
21:20Oh, Mayor Maggie, I presume?
21:23Correct as usual, King Friday.
21:25Are you here on official business?
21:28No, I was just passing through the neighborhood and saw you all alone.
21:31I thought I'd stop to chit-chat.
21:32Oh, hello, H.J.
21:34Oh, hi, Mayor Maggie.
21:35How are you?
21:36Oh, I'm just fine.
21:37How are you?
21:38Oh, I'm great.
21:38It's nice to see you.
21:39Well, H.J., you may show us your mother and father elephant.
21:44Oh, I just have a picture of them.
21:46Well, the picture will do, yes.
21:48Here it is.
21:49My, what fine-looking elephants.
21:52Thanks.
21:53Oh, yes, lovely.
21:55As a matter of fact, H.J., you look somewhat like your parents.
22:01Well, I hope so.
22:03Yes.
22:05Incidentally, Mayor Maggie,
22:06I see you have a backpack today.
22:11Oh, correct as usual, King Friday.
22:14Yes.
22:14Did you care to tell us what might be inside?
22:19Well, it happens to be a surprise, so I'd rather not.
22:22And for whom is the surprise?
22:24Well, that person will find out soon enough.
22:27Would that person be a small elephant or a royal king?
22:34Could be either.
22:36Could be neither.
22:37You do not give good hints, Mayor Maggie.
22:41I shall find out later.
22:43So you say, King Friday.
22:48There's really nothing in my backpack, H.J.
22:51It's just I don't like people being nosy about what I have in my personal bags.
22:57Oh, I guess King Friday wants to know everything.
23:00Oh, that's for sure.
23:02I really like this picture of your mother and dad.
23:06Want to take it over to Westwood and show it to everyone there?
23:09Sure.
23:09Good.
23:10Let's go.
23:10Okay.
23:11Handyman Negri, I presume?
23:36Correct, as usual, King Friday.
23:38You are a handyman, are you not?
23:40Yes, sir.
23:41Always have been.
23:42You have many tools?
23:44I do.
23:45Do you have a tool that can tell what's inside things?
23:50Inside of what kind of things?
23:52Oh, things like backpacks.
23:56Things like that.
23:57Oh, no, sir.
23:58I'm sure I don't have a tool like that, sire.
24:01Well, you may ask Cornflake especially to make one.
24:04Thank you very much.
24:06But King Friday, I mean...
24:06No buts about it.
24:08Farewell, handyman.
24:10Farewell.
24:13You know it's really all right.
24:15In fact, it's downright quite bright to think of something to do.
24:19That's specific for you.
24:21Let's think of something to do while we're waiting.
24:25Nothing to wait for now.
24:27Let's go over to the factory.
24:28Cornflake, cornflake especially.
24:38Oh, hello there, handy.
24:40Hi, corny.
24:41How you been?
24:41I'm just fine.
24:42How are you?
24:43I'm okay.
24:44But King Friday would like you to make something for him.
24:48Oh, let me guess.
24:50A rockin' throne.
24:51Not quite.
24:53A rocking dinner chair?
24:56No.
24:57I know.
24:58A rocking breathing chair.
25:01I'm afraid it's something quite different than all of those.
25:06Well, what does King Friday want?
25:08He wants you to make something that will look inside of things.
25:13Inside of things like backpacks.
25:16Look inside of things?
25:18Well, I've never made such a thing as that.
25:21I've always made rockets.
25:24Rockin' chairs, you know.
25:26I know, but would you please try?
25:29I'll try, but I'm not sure I can do it.
25:33If you can make a rocket rocking chair, I know you can.
25:39You do?
25:41You're a man who manufactures.
25:45Who manufactures chairs.
25:48You're a man who manufactures chairs everywhere.
25:52You're a man who manufactures.
25:55Well, I do my best.
25:59Oh, there's the trolley handy.
26:00I'll see you next time.
26:02Okay.
26:02Okay.
26:06Trolley.
26:07Corny said he would try.
26:11I don't know why King Friday would want such a thing.
26:16That's for sure.
26:18So, King Friday wants Corny to make a machine that will look inside things.
26:32He must have forgotten how important it is to wait until people tell us what's inside things,
26:39if they want to tell us at all.
26:41Well, you know what's inside my backpack, because I show them to you.
26:47That's the best way of knowing, sharing what we want to share.
26:53It's such a good feeling.
26:55It's such a good feeling to know you're alive.
26:58It's such a happy feeling you're growing inside.
27:02And when you wake up, ready to say, I think I'll make a snappy new day.
27:10It's such a good feeling.
27:12It's such a good feeling, a very good feeling, the feeling you know that I'll be back when
27:20the day is new, and I'll have more ideas for you.
27:25And you'll have things you'll want to talk about.
27:30I will, too.
27:33We'll have lots more to talk about and do next time.
27:37Bye-bye.
27:38For anyone who would like to know, here's the PBS Neighborhood Online Address.
28:08The people who give the money to make Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood are the people who contribute
28:22to this and other PBS stations and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.
28:27We thank you.
28:28We thank you.
