00:00...to be outside, but for 19,000 very lucky ticket holders, they can't wait to get inside.
00:06About an hour and a half ago, the team bus for the Miami Heat pulled up,
00:10and into the building came Shaquille O'Neal.
00:13And about 10 minutes later, driving up from his home in Orange County, came Kobe Bryant.
00:21Kobe and Shaq.
00:23No last names necessary.
00:25We made beautiful music together for eight years as teammates, three championships, tremendous success.
00:32But off-court, a lot of distorted notes, which, of course, led to the departure of O'Neal,
00:38which led to the great breakup, and thus today, for the first time ever, the two face each other.
00:43At center, number 32, 13th year out of LSU, Shaquille O'Neal.
00:51Number eight, from Lower Merion High School, Kobe Bryant.
01:01The head coach, Rudy Tomjanovic.
01:05Kobe and Shaq had just broken up.
01:07There's no Phil Jackson anymore.
01:09But now Shaq was on a way better team.
01:12And Kobe was on this team with the guys that had been traded for Shaq,
01:16but they weren't expected to contend for anything, whereas Miami was immediately a championship contender.
01:22For Kobe, there was no agony of defeat.
01:26It was going to be a win for him either way.
01:28If the Lakers won the game, it was a win.
01:31If the Lakers lost and someone out-dueled him, it was a win because he knew that would be his motivation
01:37to fuel the next challenge.
01:39And Kobe already gave it to him.
01:43He gave him the timeout with 9.2 now in the game.
01:46That's right.
01:47It's coming down to the last play.
01:49Timeout's called.
01:50Kobe's running the huddle.
01:53We had a new coach, Rudy Tomjanovic.
01:57And Kobe says, we're going to run the what the F play.
02:01So I called Phil, he was in New Zealand, and I said, you won't believe it, but Kobe called the what the F play.
02:10It's an expression for a play that we run at the end of the game.
02:14But does Rudy have that play?
02:17Kobe doesn't trust what's going on there.
02:20That's too bad.
02:21He doesn't have anything to go to to help him out.
02:23Jumaine Jones, the inbound.
02:26Bryant gets double.
02:27Kobe Bryant.
02:31I went, oh my gosh, Kobe misses Phil.
02:37He liked the way Phil coached the team.
02:54There he is, his first shot as an owner.
02:56You think he likes it?
03:01At this moment, I can't believe it.
03:04What's the future?
03:05Want to replace your father at the top?
03:07Yeah.
03:11Between my daughters and my sons, there's certainly enough sports teams to go around.
03:19Are you and the rest of the family, are you guys all on the same page?
03:23The Lakers caught in the middle of a family power struggle.
03:33I think I've really left them with something.
03:43Part of me always wanted to feel what it was like to be a Laker.
03:46But, you know, my manifestation, I guess, came true.
03:53I was in the Shaq trade.
03:55I mean, I was excited because I was like, I get to be Scottie Pippen.
03:59You know, and of course Kobe would have been Michael Jordan.
04:02But I was surprised that Phil left.
04:04So who was your coach?
04:05Who was our first coach?
04:06I think it was Rudy T.
04:13Yeah.
04:14Rudy T is awesome.
04:15What an amazing man Rudy T is.
04:17His energy, like his passion.
04:20It was a lot of fun to be around Rudy T.
04:22But that year was destined to fail no matter who took over.
04:26Right?
04:26I mean, you're coming in to fill the shoes of Phil Jackson, Shaq, Kobe, Dynasty.
04:31It's just not going to happen.
04:32But where he was and where Kobe was trying to go was just two different mindsets.
04:38When my dad and Jimmy hired Rudy, they did so together.
04:43When Phil was being hired the first time, Jimmy wasn't part of the process at all.
04:47So now this was definitely Jimmy's becoming more assertive in the basketball side of things.
04:56My dad wanted to empower Jimmy in that position.
05:01And he did that for me when I started in the business, in team tennis, when he said,
05:06I want you to have the success or I want you to feel the failure of, you know, what you decide.
05:13And so kind of felt that that's what he wanted Jimmy to do.
05:16What's important is that organizations hire the right coaches, and Rudy Tomjanovich was a championship coach.
05:27So there's a lot of rationale that would make that make sense.
05:31But Jim didn't really understand the business of sports and basketball.
05:36So I thought the contract for Rudy was too much money.
05:41That wasn't my decision of how much Rudy was paid.
05:45It was my dad's decision.
05:48But statistically, Rudy is fantastic.
05:51He had won a championship.
05:54It made sense.
05:57Players, we've always felt that not every player can play in New York or play in Los Angeles
06:03when you have these exorbitant expectations on you.
06:07And you can't coach there either because there's a lot of pressure that's involved
06:11and a lot of media scrutiny in those two cities.
06:13So you've got to be able to handle all of that.
06:19Halfway through the season, he just came to me and said,
06:23Mitch, I can't do it anymore.
06:26I couldn't shut it off when I was away from the arena.
06:32I can't remember exactly how I was before.
06:36It was bad.
06:37And it was kind of just like everyone was in shock.
06:40No one knew what was going on.
06:41It was no good.
06:42Phil Jackson is coming back to coach the Los Angeles Lakers.
06:51It wasn't about the money.
06:53It was about the intrigue of this situation.
06:56And it's a tremendous story.
06:58It's a tremendous opportunity.
06:59It's a story of reconciliation, redemption.
07:03It's a story of reuniting.
07:05It's a lot of things in this that make for, you know, really a wonderful opportunity for the team
07:11and for the Lakers and myself.
07:14Phil Jackson coming back to the Lakers is one of the most surprising things I've ever seen in covering the team.
07:23I just couldn't believe that Kobe would want him back.
07:25But that's what losing does.
07:27It humbles you.
07:28Here's my question to you, Kobe.
07:29How many times have I asked you, how's things going with Phil Jackson?
07:33You got a smile on your face.
07:34You say everything's going well.
07:36I'm happy the fact that Phil is back.
07:37How can you be happy that that man is back?
07:40You know what?
07:41Life is short.
07:41Okay.
07:43And you can't go around life carrying baggage.
07:46Did you ever want him to apologize, the uncoachable comment?
07:49And I think him at one point wanting you traded for the Lakers.
07:51At least that's what he said on the board.
07:56No, I didn't need him.
07:57I didn't need an apology from him.
07:58No?
07:58You know, just him coming back to the Lakers.
08:00Was enough.
08:00Was enough.
08:02Nobody's uncoachable.
08:04Was he hard to coach?
08:06Yeah, he was hard to coach.
08:07You know, when you reach a certain status, you begin to flex a little bit, and you voice
08:14your opinion.
08:15And maybe you don't always agree with the coach.
08:17Or maybe you say to yourself, I can do it better.
08:20Kobe is a very competitive and win-at-all-costs type of guy.
08:27But I think with a year apart, I kind of realized, like, dang, it really was something special.
08:35And thankfully, they did, because it allowed Phil and Kobe to reunite.
08:39Kobe came to understand that as the genius of Phil, of being able to take controversy or
08:47to take disharmony or to take a moment of tension and have that become glue for a better
08:52and deeper relationship.
08:53Kobe knew that deep down, what mattered most to Phil was winning rings.
08:59And that's the only thing that mattered to Kobe.
09:02So to that extent, they were always 100% on the same page.
09:05I sat and talked to Kobe before he did the job.
09:12Kobe had made a choice to go it alone, and we had to talk about that.
09:19And I said to Kobe, you know, are you willing to come back and be a coachable player?
09:26Yeah.
09:28You know that it's going to take a while for us to get back and win?
09:31Yeah, I know.
09:32The relationship that we've always had when it came to the game was we knew what we needed
09:38to do to get the job done, period.
09:41You know, now that relationship has gone beyond just the, you know, strategies and schematics
09:46of the game of basketball.
09:48It's just a deeper respect that goes beyond our profession.
09:51I had every belief that the team could rebound.
09:54I thought that Kobe's talent was significant enough for him to be a winner.
09:59There's been some suggestion that Jimmy is now kind of the one who's your number one advisor.
10:14Is that accurate?
10:15That is accurate.
10:16When I came back and took the job again with the Lakers, I felt like Jim was more involved
10:28in basketball than his dad was.
10:30My dad wanted Jimmy to feel, you know, this is your show.
10:37My dad had confidence in Jeannie and myself to keep the ball rolling, you know, keep the
10:43business moving.
10:46Jimmy wanted to prove himself just like anybody wants to prove themselves in business.
10:53Jimmy looked at the game differently.
10:57He relied on data, analytics to help him make decisions about players.
11:02The way I was brought up, everything's numbers.
11:05Everything that goes on in a basketball game has an effect.
11:10How much does a missed free throw hurt a team?
11:13What is the impact of a player?
11:16When I was basically running the team with my dad and Mitch, that's where the numbers really
11:22came in.
11:24But Jimmy was also the kind of guy that always thought, you know, I'm going to hit that lotto.
11:30I'm going to go to Vegas and make $100,000.
11:34It's just a matter of luck and timing.
11:39With the 10th pick in the 2005 NBA draft, the Los Angeles Lakers select Andrew Bynum from
11:48St. Joseph's High School.
11:51And where to see the Lakers draft a high school player.
11:56Remember, Charlotte took Kobe Bryant when it was the Charlotte Bryant.
11:58He didn't have any statistics, you know.
12:00It was basically high school and that was it.
12:04This was, you know, the eye test.
12:08We were at the Combines, which were so much fun to go to.
12:13You see all the new talent, all the players you scouted throughout the year.
12:18Here's Bynum, really.
12:19Oh!
12:19And he's fouled.
12:20And here's this guy, Andrew Bynum, 17.
12:24He's a seven-footer.
12:26His moves were so sweet.
12:28Had the Kareem Skyhook already.
12:31I was in love with him five minutes after the game.
12:35And Bynum is there in the big...
12:36I went to my dad first.
12:38I said, we need to get this guy.
12:40You know, I don't care what he looks like right now.
12:43He had the talent to be the best center in the league.
12:47He was 17.
12:48He was just a kid.
12:50He asked Andrew when he started playing.
12:52And he said he was like 15 or something.
12:55That's very late.
12:56And he only played, I think, like 10 games in high school or something
13:00because he had an elbow problem.
13:02Phil was not a fan.
13:04He saw the same things we saw.
13:06You know, great hands and...
13:08But he wanted us to get a four-year college player.
13:12Not a 17-year-old.
13:13Bynum had not been as successful in high school as Kobe was.
13:18But there was the sense, it's just an intriguing prospect.
13:22And Jim Buss had not established himself in any meaningful way as an executive yet.
13:27And so it just felt like he was going to draft some high school kid that he believed in.
13:33And if it worked out, it was going to be his guy.
13:35It was going to be his claim to fame.
13:37Jimmy made sure that everybody in the world knew that Andrew Bynum was his draft pick.
13:43Jimmy wanted Andrew to be successful because it would make Jimmy's name in basketball.
13:53Andrew had only played really one season of high school basketball.
13:56I knew that it would be tough on him to come from no attention to Laker spotlight.
14:03Wow.
14:05That's something for anybody to really be worried about.
14:11But he wanted to learn, and he figured that he could learn best from me.
14:15So the Lakers gave me the opportunity to coach him.
14:20I just tried to appeal to his work ethic and just see if I could get him to do a few fundamental things
14:27and get him to understand the game.
14:30The fact was he didn't understand the game, how to win, what that was all about, and he had to learn teamwork.
14:51Phil saw Andrew as a 17-year-old who doesn't know how to be a professional, needs to be taught how to be a professional,
15:02and that takes time, and you have to earn that.
15:06And Jimmy wanted it faster.
15:08I sided with Phil because Phil had been doing it for so long
15:14and understanding what he went through with his body,
15:18two knee replacements, a hip replacement, a spinal fusion,
15:24all those things that you can attribute to playing the game of basketball
15:29and what kind of life would Andrew have as, you know, somebody over seven feet tall
15:37and the wear and tear that you're putting on this young body.
15:41That's what I wanted to see was, like, the slow and steady raising of a professional basketball player.
15:50And you have to develop them the right way
15:52because if you don't, then their careers don't ever meet their potential.
15:59We actually flunked Andrew Bynum on the physical exam.
16:09The kid had a bad skeleton.
16:13They told us he's going to get bigger, and every time he lands,
16:18the load, because of the way his feet are and his knees are,
16:22it's going to limit the amount of time that he's going to be able to play the game.
16:26Just physically, it's going to happen.
16:28Even in high school, he already had several knee surgeries at 17 years old.
16:36Andrew, his knee's kind of, like, venting like that.
16:39That's why when he jumped and came down, it was like,
16:42oh, shit, is he going to be all right?
16:43Because every jump looked like it'd be his last time landing.
16:47The ownership was aware of that before they drafted him,
16:51but Jimmy was really high on him.
16:53and they drafted him anyway.
16:56But down the line, he had his own team of physicians and physical therapists,
17:01and his own personal team was allowed in the locker room, in the weight room, on the court.
17:08When Phil tried to address Andrew's team and say,
17:14look, during our practice times, you can't be in the locker room,
17:17you can't be in the weight room, and you can't be on the court,
17:21nothing changed.
17:23The guy was back in there doing what he was doing.
17:26Jimmy Buss told him,
17:27don't worry about what Phil is telling you.
17:31I'm the owner of the team.
17:33He's my guy.
17:34And so, do what you need to do.
17:51You know, I always dreamed as a kid that, you know,
17:54it was possible to score 80 or 90 or 100.
17:56What do you say we play a little basketball here at Staples Center,
17:59the Raptors and the Lakers.
18:01You know, like, sometimes you lay down in bed and you visualize things.
18:05That's at least how I would go to sleep.
18:06I'd lay down, I'd imagine playing for the Lakers,
18:09and I would imagine what the uniforms look like,
18:11I'd imagine where we'd be playing,
18:13and, you know, the smell of the arena and all sorts of stuff.
18:16And I would see myself, you know, getting hot.
18:19Still six and a half to play in the third.
18:21He pulls up for a three.
18:22Yes!
18:24Kobe again!
18:26But in the dream, like, why would you ever interrupt that?
18:29Like, you're not going to have a dream and be like,
18:30okay, and then he misses his next six.
18:32Like, it's not going to happen.
18:33So you just keep dreaming and dreaming and dreaming,
18:35and before I go to sleep, I'm like at 120 points, you know?
18:38And so, when you grow up,
18:41downloading that into your brain over and over and over,
18:44then that becomes possible.
18:45We think he's going to do something special every night,
18:49because that's how he play.
18:50But to be there actually seeing it,
18:52see the ball drop in,
18:53hearing the squeaking of the shoes,
18:55the way they really sticking him hard.
18:57Because sometimes on TV,
18:58it don't look like they playing defense.
19:00You've got to really be there to see
19:01how intense this is,
19:03and how he's really getting them off of him
19:05with his moves and his face,
19:07and the shot that he's taking,
19:08and the degree of difficulty with this man all in his face,
19:11and how he's still making the shot.
19:14He scored 20 in that quarter.
19:16Oh, he scored 20 in this quarter.
19:17Damn, he scored another 20.
19:18It's like, you know, you've seen him do it,
19:22but to see him do it four quarters in a row,
19:25you just sit back and say,
19:27how amazing is this dude?
19:29It's just mind-blowing.
19:30And an 81-point game!
19:33All he was doing was just chasing greatness,
19:42and I was just hoping that some of that greatness
19:44would just sprinkle off on me.
19:55Do you think you'll ultimately be measured by championships?
19:58The thing that I'm afraid of
20:00is not winning another championship.
20:02You know, that's why I play the game,
20:04is winning is the ultimate goal.
20:06But it's a team game,
20:07and you can only do so much.
20:10After Shaq left,
20:12it became an opportunity for Kobe
20:14to really show who's the main guy
20:17in this winning all the championships.
20:19It wasn't Shaq, it was me.
20:23We're talking about the Los Angeles Lakers.
20:24The Clippers had a better record,
20:26and yo, you still aching for a title, Kobe,
20:29because a lot of people look at you right now.
20:30You're taking it game to game,
20:31season to season.
20:33I know you've been talking about that.
20:34People look at Kobe Bryant,
20:35and they say,
20:35when is his championship coming?
20:39Kobe went beyond
20:40what any of us thought he could do.
20:42I mean, he scored 81 points in the game,
20:44and it was like,
20:45every night he was dropping 50 on people,
20:47and he had a belief in himself
20:49that he could just
20:49get anybody to win with him,
20:52that he was good enough
20:53to rise to that level.
20:54He didn't have the team around him.
20:58Listen, two pit bulls
21:00is better than one.
21:02He had some puppies with him.
21:05They've done it!
21:06They'll win their first championship
21:08in franchise history!
21:09Shaq goes out and wins a ring
21:13without Kobe.
21:15Kobe saw everything.
21:17That lit a fire
21:18under Kobe's ass.
21:20Like,
21:20all right, Shaq got a ring
21:21without me.
21:22First,
21:24I can't let that stand.
21:26But,
21:27for Kobe,
21:28there was not a championship team
21:29around him.
21:30This is true.
21:33Signed for, like,
21:3410 years, dude.
21:35It's crazy.
21:36There's not a lot of those.
21:37What?
21:39When Kobe changed his number
21:40from 8 to 24,
21:42I just said,
21:43what's the main driving factor
21:44of the change?
21:45And he said,
21:45carpe diem.
21:4624 hours in a day,
21:48there's 24 seconds
21:50on the shot clock.
21:52Every second of your day matters,
21:53and that's what
21:54this number represents.
21:55Now,
21:56we're talking with
21:56number 8 or number 24,
21:58and I've seen where
22:00that you've talked about
22:01a number change
22:01as a new chapter
22:02in your life.
22:04I'm not an old man,
22:05but, you know,
22:06you start seeing
22:06the light at the end
22:07of the tunnel
22:07is much brighter
22:08than the one
22:08at the beginning
22:09of the tunnel.
22:09So it's really about
22:10appreciating every day
22:11as it comes.
22:12You know,
22:12every game,
22:13every win,
22:14every loss,
22:15every practice.
22:16It's just soaking
22:17every day in.
22:22It's been a long time.
22:25It's been a long time.
22:26It's been a long time.
22:26It's been a long time.
22:29It's like the death
22:31of the world.
22:33But you know,
22:34there's no turning
22:35of the crowd.
22:37The mamba,
22:38it's a loose.
22:39Somebody has to
22:40put it back at the cage.
22:43How much do you have
22:44left mamba?
22:45The clock,
22:45mamba style.
22:46There is the mamba
22:47hitting the package.
22:48There's a difference
22:49between who you are
22:50and what you are.
22:51What I am
22:52when I step on that court
22:53is I become that.
22:54I am that killer snake.
22:57It's okay to be a nice guy
23:04off the court.
23:05We want you to be nice
23:06and do different things.
23:07But on the court,
23:08you got to be a prick.
23:10I mean,
23:10you really do.
23:11Because everybody's trying
23:13to take what you have
23:14away from you.
23:15Your opportunities
23:16to win a championship,
23:17your contracts,
23:18your money.
23:19You don't get to play this
23:20for 50 years.
23:21You get a very limited time
23:22to play this.
23:23so if you're not
23:25a prick out there
23:26trying to elevate yourself,
23:28elevate your team
23:29to get to the levels
23:31that you want them
23:31to get at,
23:33you ain't gonna make it.
23:34You're not gonna make it.
23:35And to me,
23:36he was just lethal out there.
23:38He was willing
23:38to rip your heart out
23:40in order to achieve
23:41his goals.
23:43That's what I got
23:44out of mamba mentality.
23:46It was impossible
23:53to keep Kobe down.
23:54If you shoot him
23:55between the eyes
23:56with a .45 Magnum,
23:59he'd catch the bullet
23:59back here
24:00and throw it back at you.
24:03The mamba mentality
24:04simply means
24:06trying to be
24:07the best version
24:08of yourself.
24:09Every day,
24:10you're trying
24:10to become better.
24:12It's a constant quest.
24:13It's an infinite quest.
24:16Let's talk about
24:18your game face.
24:19A lot of people
24:20talking about
24:20the Kobe Bryant.
24:21We have a picture here
24:22and you can't.
24:24This face.
24:25I got the impression
24:27that you would
24:28take that face
24:28home at night,
24:29eat ice cream.
24:30That face.
24:33When you play,
24:34like, all your emotions
24:35just pour out
24:36and then that face.
24:38Face.
24:39The face happens.
24:40The face.
24:40Get the shit out of it.
24:46The Lakers told Kobe
25:03that they wanted
25:04to win now.
25:07but some of the actions
25:09that they were doing,
25:12specifically Andrew Bynum,
25:14looked more like
25:16they were building
25:17for the future
25:19instead of trying
25:21to surround Kobe
25:22with the talent
25:23that he needed
25:24immediately
25:25to win.
25:27So that's a tall task
25:28for this Laker team
25:30down 3-1.
25:31But for Kobe,
25:32once again,
25:33he's got to feel
25:33out the game.
25:34Yeah, but whatever is there,
25:35whatever his team needs,
25:36he's got to try
25:37to bring that to them.
25:38Those kind of lean years
25:40where it was really
25:41kind of just him
25:42opened his perspective
25:44a little bit
25:44on how difficult
25:46it is to win,
25:46even, you know,
25:48as frustrating
25:49as it could be
25:49playing with Shaq,
25:50not having Shaq
25:51as a teammate.
25:53Kobe was not interested
25:55in leading the league
25:56in scoring
25:57or, you know,
25:58putting up 81
25:59all the time.
26:01Kobe, in order
26:02to justify
26:03the decision
26:04to go it alone,
26:06to be without Shaq,
26:08to prove himself,
26:10he needed to win.
26:11And our second round
26:12is set
26:12in the Western Conference
26:14semifinals.
26:15Phoenix
26:16has eliminated
26:17Los Angeles
26:18and Bill Jackson
26:19four games to one.
26:21The Lakers
26:22weren't going
26:22in the right direction.
26:23They were just middling
26:24and throwing away
26:25the best years
26:25of his career.
26:26How do you describe
26:27this end
26:28to this kind of season?
26:30Um, well,
26:31you know,
26:32it's always tough
26:34losing.
26:35Very tough,
26:36very frustrating.
26:37Extremely frustrating.
26:38How do you guys
26:39get this turned around?
26:40What do you hope
26:41that the management
26:41can do to get it going
26:42in a better direction
26:43than what it is right now?
26:45Um, do something
26:46and do it now.
26:49There were some
26:50conversations around
26:51a willingness
26:52to trade Andrew Bynum.
26:53So, for Kobe,
26:55it was,
26:56I need to put this
26:57out there
26:58because it's going
26:58to engage
26:59everything Laker
27:00to get this thing
27:02back on the right page.
27:03There was never
27:04a thought
27:05of moving Andrew Bynum.
27:06Never even a thought.
27:08But,
27:09there was a huge
27:10cloud over there
27:12that Kobe wanted
27:13to, you know,
27:14accelerate this.
27:17Maybe it's a combination
27:18of ego
27:19and being stubborn
27:20or just Jimmy
27:21planting his flag
27:22and saying,
27:23Andrew's going to be
27:24my contribution
27:26and my impact
27:27that I'm having
27:29on building
27:30of the next era
27:32of Laker championship teams.
27:33and so I have to
27:35be behind him
27:37and support him
27:38in my decision
27:38to take him
27:39and it has to work.
27:42Yeah, I would like
27:43to trade him.
27:43It's tough as it is
27:44to say that.
27:45It's tough as it is
27:46to come to that conclusion.
27:48I just don't see
27:49how you can rebuild
27:50that trust.
27:52My phone
27:53starts ringing
27:54off the hook.
27:55You know,
27:55Mitch, I know
27:55you're not going
27:56to trade him
27:56but just in case,
27:57you know,
27:58we have interest.
27:58It was quite a firestorm.
28:07He was not bluffing
28:09at all.
28:10I was like,
28:10what the f...
28:11We're fucking...
28:12We're building
28:12something here.
28:13What are we talking about?
28:14And then it turned
28:15into, you know,
28:15naive phone calls
28:18between me
28:18and other teammates
28:19and we don't need
28:20him anyway.
28:21You know,
28:21we've got to be like
28:22laughing like,
28:24we kind of do need him
28:25but if he doesn't
28:26want to be here,
28:27fuck him.
28:27Is he going
28:28to stay in L.A.?
28:29Are they going
28:29to trade him?
28:30And what do you
28:31make of this whole thing?
28:32Well, first of all,
28:33it's a mess, basically.
28:36It concerned me, yeah.
28:37Well, I texted him
28:38and I'm like,
28:38oh, what's up?
28:39You know what I mean?
28:40And he's like,
28:41look, there's some things
28:42that aren't sitting
28:43right with me.
28:45But, you know,
28:46when it comes
28:47right down to it,
28:48if you're offered
28:50something better
28:52than what you have,
28:53most people
28:54would take it.
28:55But I can't
28:57imagine anybody
28:58giving enough
29:00to compensate
29:01for Kobe.
29:04We had several meetings
29:05and we decided,
29:08Kobe,
29:09if you want
29:10us to explore
29:11a trade,
29:12we'll do it.
29:16And just so you know,
29:17we feel you,
29:18you are the best player
29:19in the world.
29:20Any team we talk to,
29:22we're going to want
29:23their best player.
29:24But we reached out
29:25to all the teams.
29:29Sometimes, you know,
29:30teams will just hypothetically
29:32throw something out
29:33and then the other team
29:34will say, sure,
29:34I'll do it.
29:35And then you'll start
29:35working through
29:36some of the details
29:37and then somebody
29:38will back out.
29:38And that's what I just
29:40expected to happen
29:41with this deal.
29:41But then I talk to Jerry
29:42and usually when two owners
29:44talk, it's going to be
29:44get done to.
29:45That's kind of the
29:46cementing the deal,
29:48right?
29:48Owner to owner,
29:49not GM to GM.
29:52Saying, okay,
29:54you know,
29:54we've got a deal.
29:56And bam,
29:57this is going to happen.
29:58We never had a deal
29:59with Dallas.
30:00You can't always
30:00believe Mark.
30:02Okay?
30:03Then you can tell him
30:04I said something.
30:07We had a meeting
30:08at Dr. Buss' house.
30:11It was myself
30:12and Kobe
30:12and Mitch
30:13and Jimmy
30:15and Dr. Buss
30:16sitting around
30:16talking everything
30:17through.
30:18You know,
30:18we kind of,
30:19like,
30:19went around the room
30:20and, well,
30:21did you contact
30:22this team?
30:22Yeah, we did.
30:23And, well,
30:23they wouldn't give us
30:25all we wanted, Kobe.
30:26He says,
30:26well,
30:26if they gave you
30:28everything that you
30:29asked for,
30:30then I would be
30:30the only guy
30:31on that team.
30:33And we said,
30:34that's true.
30:35He said,
30:35well,
30:35that team would be
30:36no better than
30:36the Lakers.
30:38And we said,
30:38yes,
30:39that's true.
30:39And the team
30:43will remain nameless,
30:45but we found a team
30:46that wouldn't give us
30:49equal value,
30:50but they gave us
30:52everything.
30:53They had said,
30:54hey,
30:54we've got a framework
30:55for a potential trade
30:56to the Pistons.
30:58And that was not
31:00something Kobe
31:01was interested in doing.
31:05I wasn't going
31:06to move to Detroit.
31:07Was it?
31:08I'm a Cali girl.
31:09My family's here.
31:12It's just one
31:12of those things.
31:15Before Kobe
31:16and I got married,
31:17I had told him
31:18I wasn't going to move.
31:19I used to joke with him
31:20and say,
31:21you can move,
31:22but I'm not going to move.
31:24He loved L.A.,
31:25so I remember calling
31:27Rob Palenka,
31:28Kobe's agent,
31:28and I asked him
31:30if there was
31:31any possible way
31:32that we could
31:33find a loophole
31:34to keep Kobe in L.A.
31:35and he says,
31:37there's something called
31:38a no-trade clause.
31:40And I said,
31:41I need Kobe to have
31:42that in his contract.
31:45And I made sure
31:46that we put that in there.
31:47You made sure?
31:48Yeah.
31:49Only L.A.
31:50Only L.A.
31:50sunshine.
31:52I agree with you.
31:56I don't think Kobe
31:57ever wanted to be
31:58anywhere else.
31:59He wanted to be
32:00at Laker for life,
32:01but he needed my dad
32:03and my dad's vision
32:05and his commitment
32:07to put this franchise
32:09back on top.
32:10In a swift and bold move,
32:18the Lakers front office
32:19acquired one of the best
32:20big men in the game.
32:21Simply the biggest NBA
32:22in-season trade
32:24so far this year
32:24as the Lakers acquired
32:26talented big man
32:27Pau Gasol
32:27from the Grizzlies.
32:28Who would have ever
32:29thought that the Lakers
32:30could come up
32:32with this kind of a player?
32:36When Mitch Kupchak
32:37came to you
32:38and said something like,
32:39I can get you
32:41Pau Gasol
32:41for Kwame Brown.
32:43What did you say back?
32:46No, you can't.
32:48But...
32:49We made the trade
32:53a day or two later
32:54and nobody knew.
32:57I think the night before
32:58I told Phil,
33:00like, really?
33:00That's good.
33:02Right?
33:02And then Ward from Laker.
33:05I think had that trade
33:06leaked out,
33:07there would have been
33:08another team
33:08that would have offered
33:09more
33:10or would have convinced
33:11Memphis
33:12not to make
33:13the Lakers better.
33:15It was one of those
33:16game changers
33:17bringing a talent
33:18like Pau
33:18to join Kobe Bryant.
33:21I was not happy.
33:22There are certain trades
33:23where you think,
33:24okay, thank God
33:24they made that trade
33:25and there are certain trades
33:25where you go,
33:26oh, shit.
33:27This is not good.
33:28I was in shock.
33:29I couldn't process it.
33:30It was something
33:31that I didn't really expect
33:33at that time,
33:34but it happened
33:36and a whole new world
33:39opened up.
33:41Bryant spinning in the lane
33:42back for Gasol.
33:43Pretty pass
33:44and it's back
33:44to a three-point game.
33:45as soon as I landed
33:50in Washington,
33:51he said,
33:51Pau, let me know
33:52when you land,
33:52when you get to the hotel,
33:53I'm going to come see you.
33:54I said, okay,
33:55are you sure?
33:55You got a game tomorrow
33:56at noon.
33:57He's like, no, no,
33:57I'm coming to see you.
33:59And Kobe comes
33:59and it's again,
34:00it's past 1 a.m.
34:02and it's like,
34:03Pau, welcome to the team.
34:04I can tell you,
34:05I'm super happy
34:06that you're here,
34:07but now let's go
34:08win a championship.
34:09We're not going to wait
34:10for next season.
34:10We're going to go for it
34:11right now.
34:12He was dead serious.
34:18The Lakers got Pau Gasol
34:20and I was just
34:21over the moon.
34:22There's nothing
34:22that can stop us.
34:23We're going to win.
34:24We're going to win
34:24the championship.
34:25Just his basketball IQ
34:26is passing,
34:27you know,
34:27his ability to handle
34:28the ball at that size,
34:29his synergy already
34:30with Kobe,
34:31because Kobe's
34:32such a high basketball
34:32IQ player,
34:33it didn't really take
34:34too long for them
34:36to learn how to play
34:37together.
34:40Right off the bat.
34:41Everything clicked.
34:42I just saw my teammates
34:43were moving.
34:43They were screening
34:44for each other
34:44when I had the ball
34:45in the post.
34:46We were playing
34:46pick and roll,
34:47whether it was on the side
34:48or on the top of the floor.
34:50Kobe Bryant handling the ball,
34:52attracting my defender
34:53and getting me open.
34:55It was just a matter
34:55of making reads and plays.
34:58He was a perfect number two,
34:59a perfect Robin
35:00to a Batman.
35:02And that's kind of
35:03when I was like,
35:04okay,
35:04this could be one
35:05of those special teams.
35:08I have to tip my hat off
35:09to Buster Mitchell.
35:10for going forward
35:13with this
35:14and now it's going
35:16to go out there
35:17and work hard.
35:17This is a move
35:18that puts the Lakers
35:19right among the leaders
35:21in the West
35:21and puts them
35:22in position
35:23to contend
35:24not just for the Western
35:25crown,
35:25but for the NBA title.
35:31Kobe,
35:32you guys are 32-7 now
35:33since Pau Gasol's
35:34been wearing that uniform.
35:36It's a pretty good trade.
35:36Yeah,
35:37it's not bad.
35:41I don't think anybody
35:42could have ever imagined
35:44us being here right now.
35:45and the Lakers
35:52win by eight
35:53and win the series
35:54four games to one.
35:57Los Angeles
35:57on to the NBA Finals.
36:01The buzz is back
36:02in Boston.
36:03Celtics fans
36:04have waited 21 years
36:05for this moment,
36:06a chance to play
36:07for their 17th championship.
36:08This is the NBA's
36:11marquee matchup
36:12between the two
36:13most successful franchises
36:14in NBA history.
36:16Yeah, I mean,
36:16it's Lakers-Celtics.
36:17It's a classic
36:17and you hadn't seen
36:19that since the 80s.
36:20Josh Don Ruffin!
36:24Being in Boston,
36:25they hadn't won a championship
36:26in 21 or 22 years
36:27at the time,
36:28so me being 20 years old,
36:30I didn't care about magic
36:31or a bird.
36:33I just wanted to win.
36:35Celtics were supposed
36:36to win.
36:36They just made
36:37this huge trade
36:37for Kevin Garnett.
36:39They had Paul Pierce.
36:40They had traded
36:41for Ray Allen.
36:42This was the team
36:43to beat all year long.
36:47The worst feeling
36:49of all the feelings
36:50you get in basketball
36:51is if you lose
36:52in the finals.
36:55The Lakers are
36:56in a world of hurt.
36:58Anytime you play
36:59for the Lakers
37:00and you lose
37:00to the Celtics,
37:01it's a terrible thing,
37:03but the loss
37:04to the Celtics
37:05in 08 felt
37:06gut-wrenching,
37:08you have to kind of
37:12start to ask yourself,
37:13is this meant to be again
37:14or is that it?
37:15Game,
37:16set,
37:17match,
37:18season,
37:19championship.
37:22Knowing the history
37:23of the game,
37:24I know that teams
37:25that make it
37:26to the finals
37:26and lose
37:27the next year,
37:28they don't go back.
37:30They don't go back.
37:31I'm going in my mind,
37:35I'm like,
37:35you're not going to have
37:36any more chances.
37:37Like, you blew this.
37:38This was your chance
37:38to win without Shaq.
37:39Now, he's laughing
37:40because, you know,
37:41everybody's saying
37:42that you can't win
37:43without him.
37:43You can't get it done.
37:44check it.
37:49You know how I be
37:50last week,
37:51Kobe couldn't do
37:52without me.
37:54You know how I be
37:56last week,
37:57Kobe couldn't do
37:57without me.
37:58Now, stop.
37:59Think about that.
38:00It ain't about that.
38:01It's about B.I.G.
38:03a.k.a. Big Shaq.
38:04Now, that's the difference
38:05between first and last break.
38:07Kobe, nigga,
38:08tell me how my ass tastes.
38:11Okay.
38:12Kobe,
38:13tell me how my ass tastes.
38:16Okay.
38:17Shaq's allowed
38:18to say that now.
38:19He won and Kobe didn't.
38:20Like, you're allowed to.
38:22And if you know Kobe
38:23the way that we all know Kobe,
38:24Kobe's like,
38:25fuck you,
38:25I'm going to show you.
38:27Come on, oh, boy.
38:27Come on, oh, boy.
38:29He wanted it bad.
38:31And he wanted all his teammates
38:32to want it as bad as he did
38:33because he understood
38:34that he needed his teammates
38:36in order to win.
38:38Being great
38:39is a lonely place.
38:41And that's why
38:42he didn't really have
38:43too many friends.
38:44But he had a one-track mind,
38:45and when it was time to work,
38:46it was time to work.
38:47Just work, work, work, work,
38:50work till the wheels fall off.
38:53And he just said,
38:54yo, Lamar,
38:55don't be afraid to be great.
38:57It really was like a team
38:59going into that season.
39:00Like, we were on each other
39:01every day about
39:02the only thing that matters
39:04is the championship.
39:06And I had a conversation
39:07with him at the end of the year
39:08about how the team
39:09was going to change
39:10and about how to do it.
39:12But he kind of figured it out.
39:15He made a plane.
39:16To everybody,
39:16this is my agenda.
39:17I'm working towards.
39:19Coming back that next year,
39:21from a leadership standpoint,
39:23he just was a more balanced,
39:25calm, relaxed dude.
39:27Like, he still wanted to win
39:28and obsessed about winning,
39:30but he started to process
39:32and understand
39:33just human interaction
39:35and relationship
39:36in a different way.
39:38I thought that made
39:40for a better leader.
39:43There was definitely
39:44a desire to, like,
39:45okay, let's figure out
39:46how to get back
39:47to the top of this mountain.
39:47That year,
39:51I took the girls
39:52to go visit Cope.
39:54And Natalia and Gianna
39:55were Girl Scouts.
39:57So we came up
39:58with an idea
39:58of hitting up the rookies
40:00to buy some Girl Scout cookies.
40:02So Cope walked us downstairs,
40:04bangs on the door,
40:06and in walks Cope.
40:08So they're all shocked.
40:10And one of the newbies
40:11bought a $4 box of cookies.
40:14I looked at Cope.
40:15Cope looks at me.
40:16We're like, yeah,
40:17that's not going to work.
40:18So I grabbed the order form
40:20and I went to the guys
40:23and I was like,
40:24I need you to show him
40:25how badly you want
40:27to be here next year.
40:29And they bought
40:30a shit ton of cookies.
40:33So many cookies
40:34that Natalia was
40:36the highest-selling Girl Scout
40:37in Orange County.
40:39That's good.
40:42Hey, this is Jeannie
40:43and it is Sunday,
40:45April 19th.
40:46It's the start of the playoffs.
40:47Here we are finally
40:48what we've been waiting
40:50for all year.
40:51It's a beautiful day.
40:52Let's hear what Phil has to say.
40:54Oh, honey,
40:55it's not like you're in a rush.
40:57No, well,
40:57I'm just excited, I guess.
40:59It's early morning.
41:00It's like, you know,
41:03the timing is just different.
41:04Yeah, it is.
41:05How do you think
41:06your team will react
41:07to such early game?
41:08Well, it's always hard,
41:10you know, to,
41:12what do you do,
41:13have a breakfast
41:14at 9 o'clock
41:14and then you start
41:15playing a game
41:16and by noon,
41:17you're hungry as a bear,
41:18you know,
41:19do you have steak at 10,
41:21you know,
41:21and have a big meal
41:23to start out your day
41:24so you can sustain
41:26your whatever.
41:27I would do
41:28whatever Kobe does
41:29because Kobe always
41:30has good games.
41:31Really?
41:32And early morning games,
41:33is that something
41:34like you're counting
41:35it, okay?
41:36Yes.
41:37Let's go, man.
41:37Dance time.
41:38Make it day now.
41:39Make it day.
41:40We're the best
41:41goal team all year long.
41:42Let's cut this shit
41:43off the right way.
41:44Let's go out there
41:44and take what's ours, man.
41:45Let's go get this motherfuckin'.
41:46The time is it!
41:47Dance time!
41:48Hoops!

41:50And there is a breakers!
41:52Ryan hits it,
41:53it's up!
41:54What's this
41:55from Kobe Bryant!
41:56Oh, to Matt Sutton.
41:58It's up!
41:59Congratulations, coach.
42:00You won game one
42:02of the first round.
42:04How do you feel?
42:06Well, I'm happy
42:07we won that game.
42:08That's, you know,
42:09just to get a game in.
42:11Yes!
42:13You know, there's a stat
42:14on the stat sheet.
42:16It said, you know,
42:17tonight Phil Jackson
42:18tied for the most
42:20playoffs games
42:21ever coached
42:22in the NBA.
42:23Wow.
42:25And, you know,
42:26I had no idea.
42:26I mean, I have no idea
42:27what that even means.
42:29It means you've coached
42:30a lot of games.
42:31Yeah.
42:32The ball.
42:32Look this!
42:33And the foul!
42:34On to the Western Conference
42:35semifinals
42:36as the Lakers
42:37eliminate
42:38the Utah Jazz.
42:39Time to
42:40see
42:41what's on
42:42Phil's mind.
42:43Oh, what a night.
42:44Ha, ha, ha, ha.
42:47Scooping.
42:48Draping and putting it in!
42:50How in the world
42:52did he do that?
42:53Oh, the ball.
42:54A shot,
42:54backs it in.
42:55Odom is picking up steam.
42:57A dominant
42:58blowout victory
42:58here in Game 7.

43:09Nice move.
43:10The L.A. Lakers,
43:11Western Conference champions,
43:13they win the series of 16.
43:14will this championship be special
43:16or just the same
43:18doing it without Shaquille?
43:21You know,
43:21a lot of people
43:22make a lot out of that.
43:23Yeah.
43:24People that don't know
43:24what they're talking about
43:25make a lot out of that.
43:27You know,
43:27the truth is
43:27he never would've won
43:28without me.
43:29And we would never
43:30would've won without
43:31Fischer, Robert,
43:32or you feel,
43:32and everybody else.
43:33Exactly.
43:33That's just the truth
43:34of the matter.
43:35Exactly.
43:35To be back in this position
43:36now to try to redeem
43:37a finish,
43:39you know,
43:39who we started last season,
43:41would be extremely special.
43:42And for us to get back
43:44to that mountaintop
43:45would just be
43:46an amazing feeling.
43:48Playing against that
43:49Lakers team
43:50in the finals,
43:51it just seemed like
43:51everything was going
43:52right for him.
43:54Wow!
43:54Ryan banks it in.
43:56Off balance,
43:56falling down.
43:57Kobe drove down the lane
43:59and I jumped up
44:00to try to block his shot.
44:02And he went up
44:03between my arms,
44:05came back down,
44:07went over,
44:08and shot it
44:09off the glass.
44:10There's no way
44:11he had this much hang time.
44:12And I was like,
44:13man, it must be,
44:14it must be their time.
44:17There's the final seconds.
44:19As the buzzer sounds,
44:20it's official.
