01:00You can never tell how a team's going to gel.
01:02Sometimes it comes together immediately.
01:05Sometimes it takes two or three years.
01:07So we know we have a lot of talent,
01:10but we don't know how much teamwork we have yet.
01:14It's all about firegrass playing their role.
01:17Everybody don't have their own agenda.
01:20We should be fine.
01:21There he is.
01:40His first shot is an owner.
01:41You think he likes it?
01:42At this moment, I can't believe it.
01:50What's the future?
01:51Want to replace your father into Tom?
01:53Yeah.
01:56Between my daughters and my sons,
01:58there are certainly enough sports teams to go around.
02:00Are you and the rest of the family,
02:07are you guys all on the same page?
02:10The Lakers caught in the middle of a family power struggle.
02:13I think I've really left them with something.
02:28Aloha and a very pleasant good evening to you,
02:30ladies and gentlemen.
02:31I'm Chick Hearns.
02:32New Lance is with me again.
02:34And we're so happy to be with you
02:35in this new chapter of Laker basketball, 96-97.
02:41I grew up in Little Rock, Arkansas,
02:43which is a long way away from L.A.
02:45Derek Fisher, 6'1",
02:47a 200-pound rookie out of Arkansas.
02:49To be drafted by the Lakers in 1996
02:51was more than a dream come true.
02:54You know, we obviously had Nick Van Exel
02:56and Eddie Jones,
02:58Elton Campbell.
03:01Brian Scott came back and played.
03:02But, yeah, there was no question
03:06whose team it was at that time.
03:08And now, here he comes,
03:10the big fella,
03:11Shaquille O'Neal.
03:14I think it's a new start for you,
03:16an opportunity to travel the road
03:17to a championship ring.
03:19That's what it's all about.
03:21Shaq was going to turn the franchise around.
03:24Shaq was going to give us an opportunity
03:26to get back to winning championships.
03:29He's dominant, you know,
03:30he's just physically dominant,
03:32and he is a great basketball player.
03:35He was already a celebrity at that point.
03:37And I think my dad was a little more excited
03:40about having Shaq as a sports fan
03:42than he was as the owner of the team.
03:46I'm coming in.
03:48If this was a mafia movie,
03:50I'm taking over all territory.
03:52If this was a gang movie,
03:53I'm taking over all neighborhoods.
03:54You don't have to tell me.
03:55Trust me.
03:56I'm telling you.
03:57He's bigger than life.
04:06Literally, the man, when he walks in room,
04:08commands all the attention of everybody in the room.
04:11I am Kazam!
04:14Shaq was the ultimate showman.
04:17You know, him and L.A. just went together perfect.
04:20I used to blow his ass up and get free tickets.
04:22Shaq, it's the dog.
04:23What's that?
04:23I used to hit him on the page.
04:24On the page, you're in the sky tail.
04:26It's Snoop Dogg.
04:27I need nine tickets.
04:28Nigga, leave him at the gate.
04:30You had to have a real superstar
04:33in order to have a credible franchise,
04:36especially in a city like Los Angeles.
04:38But regardless of how charming a personality is,
04:44eventually, the fans want to win.
04:47The first thing Jerry West did when I got there,
04:49he sat me down and he said,
04:51look up.
04:52And as I look up, he said,
04:54son, if you can come here and win multiple championships,
04:58your name will be up there one day.
05:00He said, it ain't going to take long.
05:02I just signed this kid.
05:04You and him are going to win a lot of championships.
05:06When Kobe was drafted,
05:11you could see the young kid's talent level.
05:15It wasn't like you had to strain to find it.
05:17It was there.
05:18I mean, it just popped right off the court.
05:21You're going to forget real quick,
05:23and everybody has to keep that in the back of your mind,
05:25that he's just 18.
05:27He was loved from day one.
05:29The fans were going, Kobe, Kobe.
05:32And they're calling Kobe, Kobe, Kobe.
05:36I can see Kobe right now.
05:39Like, his swag and confidence was through the roof.
05:43College is great competition,
05:44but in the NBA, it's the best players in the world.
05:47I love to play against the best players in the world.
05:50He was so intense on being like Michael,
05:53being better than Michael.
05:54Everything that MJ did, Kobe did.
05:57Like, the chewing of the gum, the walking,
06:00the moves, the footwork.
06:04I used to have VHS tapes back in the day
06:06full of highlights of Michael Jordan.
06:09Kobe acts to borrow him.
06:12And I have never seen those tapes again.
06:14He was just like,
06:15no, motherfucker, I want my tapes.
06:17When Kobe came in,
06:21he had all the components to be a great ball player.
06:24But what he didn't have was experience.
06:28Would he be capable of waiting his time?
06:32And there's no question,
06:33his time was going to come soon.
06:36You are the youngest player for the Lakers, right now.
06:38Do you feel any pressure coming straight out of high school?
06:40Not really.
06:41No, it's more exciting than more than anything.
06:43No, I just can't wait to go out there and just play.
06:45You know, I knew he had greatness in him
06:48from day one of watching him in practice.
06:50And then to have Shaq, you know,
06:52if they could gel, I was like,
06:53man, the sky's the limits for him.
06:55My main man, Show Boat, coming in here.
06:58This is my man.
06:59This is my man.
06:59This is Show Boat.
07:00We call him Show Boat,
07:01but y'all know him as Kobe Bryant.
07:02This is my main man.
07:04I feel like a father, though.
07:06I mean, this is my boy.
07:07I mean, we play together.
07:08We sit on the bench by each other.
07:09We're always talking.
07:10Then when I look at,
07:12you know how you go down in the locker room
07:14and they list everybody's age.
07:16Not the age, but their date of birth.
07:17And I see 78.
07:19Oh, yeah.
07:20And I'm like twice as old as a kid, you know.
07:24I've been living in L.A.
07:25since I was like in third grade.
07:26This young man was so respectful
07:29because I was like,
07:32Kobe, nice to meet you.
07:33My name is Boat.
07:34I know who you are, Mr. Scott.
07:36That's exactly how you do it.
07:36I know who you are, Mr. Scott.
07:38I was like, okay, well,
07:39you don't have to call me Mr. Scott.
07:40You know, what have your biggest challenges been this year?
07:45The hardest thing, I would say,
07:47has been moving away from my family.
07:49You didn't have the opportunity that we had
07:51as far as we were able to adjust a little bit
07:53because we went to college,
07:55so we had a chance to adjust,
07:56and you're coming straight out of high school.
07:58You know, I've never played with anybody
08:00at 18, 19 since college.
08:02Sports are all about tradition,
08:04and after a game,
08:06the beers were in the locker room.
08:07You always crack open a broom.
08:08Once we got Kobe on the team,
08:12someone comes in and says,
08:14you have a minor in here.
08:16Yeah, there's a couple guys
08:17that kind of got upset at Kobe about that.
08:20We'll go out somewhere,
08:22and they'll look at him like,
08:23dude, I can't let you in.
08:24You're not even 21 yet.
08:27No, I can get them in,
08:28but if you ask somebody something
08:30and they say no twice,
08:32you assume it's going to be no all the time.
08:34How can you live in Southern California
08:36and just go to practice and go home?
08:38He really wasn't the club type.
08:41You know, he dibbled and dabbled a little bit,
08:43but then he would get on his basketball shit,
08:45and he would be, like, locked up.
08:46He just was different.
08:47I always keep people arm distant.
08:49You know, I'm very outgoing.
08:50I'll talk to anybody,
08:52but there's a certain limit.
08:54I'm not going to let just anybody
08:56into my family, sir.
08:57He never really smiled.
08:58He was always serious.
09:00They were, they were, you know, opposites.
09:05Kobe was, you know, focused, driven.
09:08At 18 years old,
09:10Kobe would kill us in practice.
09:12And we was like,
09:12man, slow your ass down.
09:14Like, goddamn, we didn't walk through.
09:16And Shaq wasn't that fun.
09:18We in practice, waiting on him.
09:21All of a sudden, he comes out of the locker room,
09:23butt naked, does a lap,
09:25and goes back in.
09:26That is indeed frightening.
09:29I don't know what you're talking about.
09:31And they need to understand
09:32that snitches get stitchy,
09:33so when I see you,
09:34that's something for you,
09:35D-fishing Rob.
09:35So there was conflict,
09:38and Kobe worked his tail off
09:40to be the greatest.
09:42Shaq had the natural talent
09:43to be the greatest,
09:44but it didn't seem like
09:45he worked as hard to get beyond.
09:48From a distance,
09:49you could see that these two guys
09:52were going to be butting heads.
09:54Women's basketball goes big time.
10:07New league,
10:08backed by the NBA.
10:09About time that the women
10:11take the court
10:12and show their stuff.
10:13When I got the call from my dad
10:15to run the Sparks,
10:16of course, my head was spinning again,
10:18going, okay, now I'm older,
10:20I'm more mature,
10:22I'm running another sports team.
10:24But I already went through this
10:26with the lasers.
10:27You know, you don't expect to win.
10:30You just build yourself up
10:32and you get there
10:32as quickly as you possibly can.
10:34But it's the same business.
10:36You're trying to grow something.
10:38Welcome to the Great Western Forum,
10:39and it is a sell-out crowd
10:41of some 12,000 people.
10:43It was so much fun to try out
10:45this new age of basketball
10:47that was happening.
10:48When I moved into coaching,
10:50Johnny, I mean,
10:51was just like his dad,
10:52not being too involved,
10:54but involved enough.
10:56Coop, I don't care what you do,
10:57is it best for the team?
11:01Here's the tip.
11:02And the Sparks control.
11:04The Lakers have Shaq to grow on.
11:06We had Lisa Leslie.
11:09Los Angeles has been known
11:10for its showtime
11:11with the Los Angeles Lakers,
11:12and I think it will be continued
11:13with the WNBA's team.
11:15If it wasn't for the physicality,
11:18Lisa could have played
11:19in the NBA.
11:20Leslie starred at USC.
11:23Grew up just a few blocks
11:24away from the forum.
11:25Lisa Leslie with those long arms,
11:27she just knocks it out.
11:28She was the great player,
11:30and we knew that we were going
11:32to have a great first step
11:34when we started this team.
11:36Could she do it alone?
11:38Of course not.
11:39That'll do it here
11:39at the Great Western Forum.
11:41It's the New York Liberty
11:42over the L.A. Sparks.
11:44Just like any other team,
11:45it might not have been
11:46an immediate success.
11:48But my dad said,
11:49you're going in the right direction.
11:57You know, Jimmy wanted
11:58to prove himself
12:00just like I wanted
12:01to prove myself,
12:01or anybody wants
12:03to prove themselves.
12:04Everything I know
12:05about basketball
12:06and scouting,
12:08I learned from Jerry West.
12:11My dad knew
12:12I would come in with,
12:13please just feed me
12:14everything you got.
12:15Mr. West,
12:17who's a legend right there,
12:19and I'm working with him.
12:23He took me on
12:24my first scouting job.
12:26Of course, that was Hawaii,
12:27which was great, you know.
12:31When you're traveling
12:32with horses and trailers,
12:34you're getting pretty dirty.
12:36So when we went first class
12:37to Hawaii with Jerry West,
12:39I'm sitting there going,
12:39this is a dream.
12:40and I can't believe
12:42I'm sitting next to him.
12:44I thought he was shy.
12:47Always very courteous.
12:49He would go to these
12:50big scouting things with us.
12:52He'd see games.
12:54He'd send reports in.
12:56Stuff you kind of do
12:57when you're starting out.
12:59My dad felt that Jimmy
13:01had a good eye,
13:03that given time,
13:04Jimmy could really understand
13:07what you look for
13:08in a great player.
13:09I thought he was fine.
13:10I really did.
13:12Obviously, I had great respect
13:13for Jerry and for his kids.
13:15But my only question was,
13:17you know,
13:17to your owner's son,
13:19or are you hiring him
13:20to, uh,
13:21just to give him something to do?
13:24Was he going to, you know,
13:25be dedicated enough to do it?
13:26When I was, you know,
13:32named as the general manager
13:34of the forum
13:35and started running the venue,
13:36there really wasn't
13:38much crossover
13:39between anything
13:40my brothers were doing
13:42and what I was doing.
13:45Jeannie Buss
13:46is a woman with a plan.
13:48She wants to make
13:48the Great Western Forum
13:49the best arena it can be,
13:51at least until a new arena
13:53is built in L.A.
13:54The ambitious part of me
13:56jumped at the opportunity.
13:58I wanted to learn
14:00and grow.
14:02My father took our personalities
14:04and kind of helped place us
14:07where we excelled.
14:09And Jeannie's always been
14:11a perfectionist.
14:13I liked,
14:14I liked the challenge.
14:16When you are in a position
14:18like that,
14:18you have to be at work
14:20in the morning,
14:21and then you have to stay
14:24that night
14:24for whatever event
14:26is in the building
14:27because it's your building.
14:30I told Jerry,
14:32she doesn't have to be here
14:33for every concert,
14:35but she was very devoted.
14:38I wanted to do whatever I could
14:40in the family business,
14:42but as time went on,
14:44you know,
14:44I really realized
14:46how much I was missing
14:47of a dating life,
14:49a social life.
14:51In the divorce,
14:53I ended up with a house
14:55that was on the beach.
14:57My girlfriends would literally
14:59call me from my house
15:01while I was at work
15:02saying,
15:03hey,
15:04it's a great beach day,
15:05wish you were here.
15:07Those years,
15:08those three or four years,
15:10I really,
15:10I had no free time.
15:12especially when Shaq and Kobe
15:16came to the Lakers,
15:18my phone was ringing
15:18off the hook,
15:20people requesting tickets,
15:21celebrities coming again.
15:23There's some hope now.
15:24People really believe
15:25in the Lakers again.
15:26You know,
15:26they watched them,
15:27but they really didn't believe in them.
15:29Now they're watching them
15:30at a record number.
15:31That era that got ushered in,
15:38the Lake show,
15:39it was not so much for him
15:42and it wasn't for even us
15:45as a family.
15:46It was really,
15:47it'll help our fans.
15:52You're talking about
15:53expectations through the roof.
15:55Everywhere we went,
15:56it was sold out.
15:57Like,
15:58it was crazy.
15:59We were ecstatic
16:00that we had
16:02what you would call
16:03a big two.
16:04And they were everywhere.
16:09Hey,
16:10you're Kobe Bryant.
16:12Oh, Kobe.
16:14Look, Mo,
16:15it's about the SAT.
16:16I don't do well
16:17on big tests.
16:18We ease up.
16:20This is the Lake show.
16:22We're not the team
16:23that's gonna come down
16:24and run plays.
16:24We're the team
16:25that's gonna
16:25lobs,
16:27dunks.
16:29who stops at the dungeon
16:32like nobody does.
16:36So we got arena
16:36filled with A-list stars.
16:38You know what I mean?
16:39They coming to watch you.
16:41Coming to sit courtside
16:42after becoming famous
16:43is probably the best thing
16:44that can happen for you
16:45in entertainment
16:46because you know
16:47that you're an attraction
16:47at the attraction.
16:49You're watching
16:49the basketball game
16:50but you know
16:51the basketball players
16:52are watching you.
16:52you know at that time
16:55I could afford
16:56season tickets
16:57so being up
16:58in the forum
16:59was great.
17:01Yelling at the refs
17:02you know
17:02where they can hear you now.
17:05You just knew
17:06that we were gonna
17:07win a championship again
17:08and that getting
17:09to the forum
17:10to watch them play
17:10was gonna be
17:11the golden ticket
17:12for the time of your life.
17:13That place was on fire
17:16you know
17:16it was a magical time
17:18in L.A. sports.
17:20We thought
17:21this is the beginning
17:22of ring after ring
17:23after ring
17:23that's what we were hoping.
17:29I grew up in Los Angeles
17:31I was there for showtime
17:33and then there was
17:34this long period
17:35of wandering
17:36in the wilderness
17:36but when I got
17:38to the times
17:38in 97
17:39the Lakers
17:40the Shaq and Kobe era
17:41was on the way up.
17:42I think people thought
17:43the Lakers could be
17:44championship contenders.
17:46It all felt like
17:47preordained in a way.
17:50Although Kobe
17:51still has some things
17:52to learn and work out.
17:54There's gonna be a time
17:55through the playoffs
17:56where guys on the team
17:57are struggling
17:58and we're gonna have to
17:59go in there
17:59and do our job
18:00and answer the call
18:01answer that ultimate challenge.
18:03I love it man
18:03I can't wait.
18:04We're playing Utah
18:05in Utah
18:06and we were about
18:07to lose the series.
18:10We were down 3-1
18:11in the playoffs.
18:12If it was another game
18:13we're going home.
18:15We knew it was
18:16all or nothing.
18:19We're tied at Union 9.
18:20It's a title
18:21in Los Angeles
18:22with 11 point
18:23through the play
18:24in regulation.
18:25We were tied
18:26with Utah.
18:28What we've got to do
18:29is get a shot.
18:31This was the time.
18:33The play was for me
18:34and I was open
18:35and Kobe decided
18:38he wanted to shoot the shot.
18:395 seconds left
18:414.
18:41Bryant drives
18:42pull out
18:43shot on the way
18:44go good
18:45grab a low rebound
18:46to go to overtime.
18:47And everybody always
18:48asks me this question
18:49about
18:49was you pissed off?
18:51Don't get me wrong
18:52yeah at the time
18:52I was pissed
18:53but when you think about it
18:54you're like
18:55he felt like he was open.
18:57Now in the overtime
18:58Utah got out
19:00in the lead
19:00and we were
19:02trying to catch up.
19:04And Kobe shot
19:04two air balls
19:05in a row.
19:06Bryant for three
19:07it's short again
19:08air ball
19:09air ball
19:108 seconds
19:117 seconds
19:12here's a 3 pointer
19:13air ball again
19:14by Kobe Bryant
19:16it's over
19:16it's over
19:17it's all over
19:18listen
19:19if the play was drawn up
19:20for someone else
19:21if I was open
19:22I would have taken it.
19:23I don't know
19:24if Kobe was ready
19:26for that moment
19:26but
19:28he had the heart.
19:30I told him
19:31I said man
19:32we lost
19:33but one day
19:34everybody's gonna fear you.
19:36Didn't seem like
19:37you ever lost your confidence?
19:38Oh you can't
19:39you know
19:39we came too far
19:40don't you have to
19:41open it up
19:42shoot it
19:42and unfortunately
19:43you weren't falling
19:44you weren't falling tonight
19:45but
19:45you can see the makings
19:47of a Hall of Fame player here
19:48just his understanding
19:50of the game
19:50his mastery
19:51of the fundamentals
19:51all the tools
19:53to be
19:53a great great player.
19:56I had to take the shot
19:57I rushed it
19:58and I came up a little short
19:59this year
20:01we learned from those mistakes
20:03when I get put in that situation again
20:04I'm not gonna miss it.
20:06He looked at that
20:06as a learning experience
20:07and he was gonna come back
20:08the next year
20:09with a vengeance
20:09and he did.
20:11Are you basically now
20:27the basketball player
20:28you want
20:29and think you should be?
20:30Still a long way
20:31for me to go
20:31I mean this is just the beginning
20:32and I'm just getting started.
20:34He wasn't easy
20:35okay
20:35he was not
20:36he thought
20:37there was one guy
20:38against the five
20:39when Kobe was in one of those moves
20:42we went throwing the ball
20:43we were like
20:44we can't get it to you
20:46he was swinging the other way
20:46and he would get so mad
20:48the players
20:49gave him the nickname
20:50showboat
20:51and I told him
20:52that's the worst nickname
20:53he could ever have
20:54I joined the Lakers
20:56in 1997
20:57the friction between
20:59older players
21:00and Kobe as a young player
21:01was simply that
21:02he wanted it too fast
21:04the thought was
21:05maybe he didn't have
21:05to pay his dues
21:06Kobe Bryant
21:08just 19 years old
21:10he's been voted by the fans
21:11to start in next Sunday's
21:12All-Star Game
21:13Kobe was all business
21:29he just looked different
21:31from the rep
21:31the moment goes
21:32at the floor
21:33he looked different
21:34he's like a gunslinger
21:35you know what I mean
21:36coming into town
21:38taking no prisoners
21:39he's not there
21:41to be your friend
21:41that energy
21:42of like
21:43no no
21:43I'm the alpha male here
21:45started to come out
21:46this should be my team
21:47follow me
21:48he wanted the spot
21:51he wanted to be the guy
21:53period
21:53and we had to say
21:56this thing's called
21:57pecking order here
21:58and re
21:58relax
22:00I'm still in charge
22:01when Kareem was here
22:03Magic always said
22:05this is Kareem's team
22:05I'm just here to help him out
22:07and I talked to Kobe
22:08about that
22:09you just say
22:10it's Shaq's team
22:11just say it
22:12and that didn't go
22:13over too well
22:14he used some
22:17choice words
22:18about Shaq
22:19fuck that motherfucker
22:20can I say that?
22:24you guys had a fight
22:25you and Shaq
22:26what was that all about?
22:27what happened?
22:28like I said
22:28we're very similar
22:29because we're both competitive
22:30so we had two competitive guys
22:32going head to head
22:33you're going to have fights
22:34did he connect
22:35on the punch you threw?
22:36no
22:36no
22:38no
22:38no
22:39I was swift on the duck
22:40you ducked out of it?
22:41did you throw one back?
22:43yeah
22:43well we just kind of got into
22:44like a pushing and shoving match
22:45we touched it up a little bit
22:48but it wasn't a fight
22:49I don't fight
22:51the clash between Kobe and Shaq
22:55was a little greater than anticipated
22:57it's not surprising that
22:59that the Lakers went through dysfunction
23:01dysfunction is part of the job
23:04it's part of the business
23:06can Kobe and Shaq coexist?
23:08can they make it work together?
23:09what they have to understand
23:11it takes two stars
23:13to win an NBA championship
23:14you gotta have two
23:15how well do these guys
23:21have to get along
23:22for the Lakers to win a title?
23:24well they have to be in sync
23:25on the court
23:26and off the court
23:26they really don't have to get along
23:28I think the expectations
23:29continue to grow
23:30every year
23:31internally for us
23:34as well as
23:34you know
23:35media fans
23:35etc
23:36you don't have
23:38Batman and Robin
23:39you got Batman and Superman
23:41you know what I'm saying
23:42you got two alphas
23:44and they gotta treat each other
23:46with respect
23:47or not
23:48it's gonna be a problem
23:49it just creates this feeling of yearning
23:51if they can just pull it out
23:53like bring it together
23:54for this game
23:54you know
23:55every little thing
23:59becomes magnified
24:00because it could be
24:01the difference between
24:01a championship or not
24:02it could be the difference
24:03between a dynasty or not
24:04when you have a player like Shaq
24:07you should be
24:08winning championships
24:10and we were losing
24:11in the playoffs
24:1297
24:14we lost
24:1598
24:17nothing swept
24:18Dr. Bus never even talked
24:22about the pressure
24:23but I knew
24:24Shaq
24:25we gave you 120 million
24:27gotta step up
24:28the criticism of you
24:30is that you have
24:31too much fun
24:32doing other things
24:32and that basketball
24:33is not your focus
24:34Dr. J did a movie
24:37Kareem did a movie
24:38Shaq
24:39you're doing too much
24:40Shaq's not ready
24:41it's all my fault
24:42which I accept
24:44I understand
24:45but what I'm realizing
24:46is
24:47everybody
24:48when it comes to coaching
24:50is thinking
24:51just like I am
24:52Del Harris
24:53who had been a great coach
24:54for that team
24:56in the mid-90s
24:56but now
24:57the standards
24:58and the expectations
24:59change
25:00when you get the likes
25:00of Shaquille O'Neal
25:01Del was a teacher
25:05and that was one
25:06of the issues
25:07that developed
25:08over time
25:09he let the players run
25:13you know
25:14and then there was
25:15something to be taught
25:16so then everyone
25:17would have to come
25:17into a standstill
25:18you know
25:20shoot-arounds
25:20a lot of times
25:21would end up
25:22being a Del lecture session
25:25and then you just
25:25see players
25:26just go sit down
25:27he was on the verge
25:29of losing everybody
25:31and once you lose a guy
25:32it's hard to get him back
25:34he had already lost Nick
25:36I think we lost each other
25:38Del and I lost each other
25:39Del was calling plays
25:42from the sideline
25:43and Nick
25:43he hated that
25:45and the next day
25:47it kind of erupted
25:47we had to pull Nick away
25:49pull Del away
25:50I mean they got
25:51in each other's face
25:52it got 70 year old
25:54Del ready to
25:56physically fight
25:57Del was like
25:58come on
25:58you're gonna walk over here
26:00but you're gonna crawl back
26:01next thing you know
26:04they gonna say
26:04Del Del like this to me
26:06no man
26:07and I had a ball
26:08in my hand
26:08and he slapped it
26:09out of my hand
26:10so to me
26:12it wasn't a big deal
26:12and Del and Shaq
26:15they had their conflict
26:16once Shaq feel as though
26:18you're not capable
26:19he wants you out of there
26:20my thing with all the coaches
26:24was if you haven't been
26:25to the mountaintop
26:26my dad's like
26:29I've got to keep Shaq happy
26:31he was gonna find
26:33whatever it took
26:35to make Shaq successful
26:37and take him
26:38back to the promised land
26:40I was sitting in my office
26:41and I get a call
26:42from Jerry Buss
26:43he said
26:44I just
26:45let Del go
26:46and I'm
26:47whoa
26:49he was my friend
26:51Wes is coming
26:53into the room guys
26:54we just feel
26:55at this point
26:56in time
26:56that
26:56we're not going
26:58in the right direction
26:59we felt a coaching
27:00change was necessary
27:01I was surprised
27:03when I was let go
27:05as a matter of fact
27:05this would be like
27:07a guy having
27:08three bad days
27:09on the market
27:10and selling everything
27:11doesn't seem fair
27:13but I don't care
27:14about fair
27:14it's just
27:15not sensible
27:16head coach
27:17first time
27:18we've ever said that
27:19is Kurt Rambis
27:20you know
27:22this was a very
27:22difficult season
27:24I'm a young coach
27:26I'm trying to deal
27:26with all of this
27:27and there was
27:29so much pressure
27:30to win a championship
27:31so that didn't
27:33really
27:33you know
27:34bode well
27:35for me either
27:36we needed
27:38to be successful
27:39there was a
27:41big financial
27:42crush
27:43because we were
27:44moving into
27:45a new arena
27:45Staples Center
27:48was going to open
27:49this era
27:51was going to end
27:52the forum
27:52was going to end
27:53halfway up
27:55to the ceiling
27:56at the forum
27:56here in Los Angeles
27:57Lakers moving
27:58from our right
27:58to our left
27:59and the tip
27:59between our
28:00Dr. Buss
28:01let me ask you
28:02first of all
28:02why would you
28:03want to buy
28:05the forum
28:05the forum
28:06is a magnificent
28:07piece of real estate
28:09so it's a combination
28:11of economics
28:12and fun
28:13the forum
28:16was his home
28:17and he loved
28:18that building
28:19he really did
28:20I didn't want to go
28:22I don't think
28:23anybody wanted
28:23to go really
28:24it was just
28:26kind of like
28:26a mom and pop
28:27operation
28:28I mean
28:28everybody there
28:29knew everybody else
28:30all the employees
28:31at the forum
28:32all the usher
28:32everybody
28:33we were all
28:33family basically
28:34but the forum
28:36was getting older
28:38and it was worried
28:39about that it was
28:40going to cost him
28:41money to keep
28:42the maintenance up
28:43you're watching the Detroit
28:47pistons opening up
28:48the palace
28:49in Auburn Hills
28:50luxury seating
28:53and suites
28:55all these things
28:56that we just
28:56couldn't do
28:57at the forum
28:58we didn't have
28:59the space
29:00so the world
29:02so the world
29:02was changing
29:03and my dad
29:05wasn't interested
29:07in building
29:08a new arena
29:08he didn't want
29:09to take on
29:10that task
29:11and there was
29:12just not enough
29:12money to do it
29:13my dad sold the kings
29:17in 1987
29:18and the new owner
29:19sold the team
29:20to fill on shoots
29:21in the 90s
29:22and he was looking
29:23to build an arena
29:25in LA
29:27well I'd never met
29:28Dr. Buss before
29:30we had
29:31only had
29:32I think
29:32two meetings
29:33before we
29:34consummated
29:35the deal
29:36and Phil
29:38said
29:38I'm taking
29:39a lot of risk
29:40to build this arena
29:41your team
29:42is going to benefit
29:44and go up in value
29:45and I should get
29:46a piece
29:47of your upside
29:48my dad
29:49had to basically
29:50sell a piece
29:51of the team
29:51which he didn't
29:52want to do
29:53I wanted to buy
29:54more of the Lakers
29:55and he wanted
29:57to sell me less
29:58but
29:59like much of life
30:01all things
30:01are compromises
30:02we knew
30:04that when we
30:04came to Staples
30:06that this was
30:07now
30:07entering into
30:09the corporate
30:10century
30:11my dad
30:12made an agreement
30:13that the Lakers
30:14would move
30:15into that new
30:16arena
30:17in downtown
30:18Los Angeles
30:1920 years ago
30:22downtown LA
30:23was very sad
30:24I rarely
30:26went downtown
30:28maybe
30:28once or twice
30:30a year
30:30it wasn't very
30:31pretty
30:32and it wasn't
30:33someplace you'd like
30:34to walk alone
30:35well frankly
30:35it still isn't
30:36it was an adult
30:38dose
30:38be careful
30:40where you walk
30:40be in good company
30:42and about your back
30:43our season ticket
30:44holders were
30:45I don't want
30:46to drive downtown
30:47nobody goes
30:48downtown
30:49it's too dangerous
30:50now you're talking
30:53about a lot more
30:54risk
30:54a lot more money
30:56that could be lost
30:57as we got closer
31:02and closer
31:02to
31:03Staples Center
31:04opening
31:04there was just
31:06a lot of
31:06anxiety about
31:07what the future
31:08was going to hold
31:09Jerry Buss tells me
31:11all the time
31:11that he wants
31:12a championship
31:12caliber team
31:13he made a big
31:15investment
31:15in Shaq
31:16and Kobe
31:18right out of
31:19high school
31:19did we miscalculate
31:20on what he's
31:22going to be
31:22and you know
31:24it just wasn't
31:25working
31:26there was no longer
31:32a reason for me
31:34to be general manager
31:35of the forum
31:36and my dad
31:37gave me the title
31:38executive vice
31:40president of
31:40business operations
31:41that meant
31:43that I was
31:43an executive
31:44on the
31:46Laker side
31:47of things
31:47you know
31:50I wasn't aware
31:51of any
31:52hard feelings
31:53from my siblings
31:54when I moved
31:55in that position
31:56that was
31:57something that
31:58my dad had
31:58been grooming
32:00me towards
32:00I've learned
32:01from the best
32:02and that gives
32:03instant recognition
32:05and respect
32:06I like was
32:09at the office
32:09every day
32:10and that wasn't
32:11something that
32:12either of them
32:12really wanted
32:13to be at the
32:13office every day
32:14I mean I was
32:16proud of my sister
32:18taking over
32:19the Laker job
32:20and I was proud
32:21to be involved
32:22in women's sports
32:23during the building
32:25of the Staples Center
32:26I was excited
32:27about it
32:28but it was
32:29bittersweet
32:30at that time
32:30the Lakers
32:32and the Lakers
32:32and Kings
32:33were asked to go
32:34to the Staples Center
32:34and the Sparks
32:38were not
32:39it was just hurtful
32:43you know
32:44it was like
32:44why weren't we
32:45asked to come over
32:46I felt the same
32:49that the Staples Center
32:50should have invited us
32:50because the WNBA
32:52the Sparks
32:52and the Lakers
32:53were a whole entity
32:54it was like
32:57wow
32:57okay
32:58women's basketball
32:59is second class
32:59citizens again
33:00before you get
33:03too excited
33:03about the new
33:04additions to the league
33:04remember
33:05all of the players
33:06are still women
33:07it was
33:08hurtful
33:09to hear
33:10you know
33:11people make
33:12the jokes
33:12and
33:13I could relate
33:14to it
33:14because I'd heard
33:15it for so many
33:16years
33:16about everything
33:17about a woman
33:19being involved
33:19in sports
33:20you know
33:21I mean
33:22it makes me
33:22second guess
33:23well
33:23what am I
33:24really doing
33:25am I doing
33:25something good
33:27here
33:27or is it just
33:28to comfort me
33:29for a job
33:31am I just
33:32being appeased
33:33by my father
33:34and my family
33:35it has been
33:39well documented
33:40a tumultuous year
33:41for the Laker
33:41organization
33:42the firing of
33:43coach Del Harris
33:4412 games into the season
33:45and now
33:46finally
33:47the playoffs
33:47have arrived
33:48for a team
33:48that had such
33:49high expectations
33:50at the beginning
33:51of the year
33:52San Antonio
33:56sweeps
33:57what does the future
33:59hold for the Lakers
34:00and for Kurt Rambles
34:01I already had
34:03a grace period
34:04we're not even
34:06I'm going to win
34:06this year
34:07you're close
34:07but around
34:09the third time
34:09getting swept
34:10now it's time
34:12to make moves
34:12and then finally
34:14I went upstairs
34:14and said
34:15hey man
34:17Phil Jackson
34:18is available
34:18in June
34:35of that year
34:35I was in Montana
34:37to spend my summer
34:38from having played
34:4114 years
34:42in the NBA
34:42I just knew
34:44that you spent
34:45a lot of time
34:46on the road
34:46a lot of time
34:47away from family
34:48and you needed
34:49to have a spot
34:51to recreate
34:52I was fly fisherman
34:57did a lot
34:58of motorcycle riding
34:59all stuff
35:00that really
35:00coordinated
35:02with the great outdoors
35:04the Rocky Mountains
35:05we had to interview
35:09Phil
35:09they sent me out
35:11Phil said
35:13before you come in
35:14I need you to move
35:14this log out the lake
35:16and I'm saying to myself
35:19I'm not moving
35:20no motherfucking log
35:21out of no motherfucking lake
35:23but then I said
35:24it's a test
35:25I know
35:25because it's stuff
35:26my father used to do
35:28and Phil Jackson
35:28is a white version
35:30of my father
35:30my father was a drill sergeant
35:33he demanded respect
35:34because Phil had
35:36a great resume
35:37he also demanded respect
35:39I always felt like
35:41Chuck had so many
35:42other things going on
35:43films
35:44music
35:45appearances
35:46that basketball
35:47wasn't his first priority
35:49and I just encouraged
35:51him to really
35:51you'll give basketball
35:53your full attention
35:54you say don't go out
35:56no more clubs for me
35:57you say no more movies
35:59no more movies for me
36:00no more rapping
36:01no more nothing for me
36:03what do you want me to do
36:04alright I'm doing it
36:06Shaq go move the log
36:08in the cold ass water
36:09yes sir
36:10he gives me a towel
36:14he says hey
36:15go in here
36:16get changed
36:16I open the door
36:18and the sun is hitting
36:23these gold balls perfectly
36:24it was like
36:26ah
36:27I felt like King Arthur
36:32who just passed his last test
36:34and you're about to become a knight
36:36and then he said
36:37if you listen to me
36:38I'll make you MVP this year
36:40so I shake his hand
36:42and say deal
36:43I was meeting with my dad
36:47you know
36:48he said
36:48well we can get Phil
36:49but he's going to cost us
36:51and I said
36:51well you know the numbers
36:53you get this
36:54you've got a hell of a chance
36:55of winning some championships
36:56after an agreement was made
36:59Dr. Boss said
37:00really all I want
37:01is to win another championship
37:03I said
37:04well
37:04I came here because
37:06I think we can win
37:06more than one championship
37:08in six of the last
37:09eight NBA finals
37:10Phil Jackson
37:11was on the winning sideline
37:12as coach of the Chicago Bulls
37:14today Jackson
37:15is back in the spotlight
37:16named head coach
37:17of the Los Angeles Lakers
37:18they did the press conference
37:20in the same room
37:21where they had
37:21the Golden Globes awards
37:22welcome to Hollywood
37:24and Phil seemed to embrace it
37:26this is a team
37:28that is talented
37:29it's young
37:31it's on the verge
37:32it's been on the verge
37:33and yet it hasn't quite
37:34gotten over the top
37:35the arrival of Phil Jackson
37:37meant that
37:38there were no more excuses
37:39if something goes awry
37:42they're not going to fire the coach
37:44there's going to be changes
37:45made to the roster
37:47that upped the pressure
37:48on Kobe and Shaq
37:49Shaq said he wants
37:50to win a championship
37:51that's what he said
37:53Kobe says the same thing
37:55well okay
37:56we're going to find out
37:57if all that's true
37:57right now
37:58I'm going to ask them
37:59get in the best shape
38:00they can be in
38:00because come October
38:01they're going to be working
38:02at the press conference
38:06I'm standing next to Magic
38:08and you literally see me
38:10roll my eyes
38:11at like
38:12oh my gosh
38:13this guy is going to
38:14bring a circus to town
38:15what are we doing
38:17I already was worried
38:21that Phil was going to be
38:22a bigger personality
38:24than Shaq or Kobe
38:25and you know
38:27now we're at the Beverly Hills Hotel
38:28doing these special press conferences
38:31and of course
38:33Phil's like
38:33man of the hour
38:35there was no way
38:37I was going to like
38:38wait in line
38:39to meet him
38:40so I finally met him
38:43in September
38:44in Vancouver
38:46at the league meeting
38:47it was raining
38:49in Vancouver
38:49of course
38:50the end of September
38:51I got to the airport
38:53and Jeannie was sitting
38:55where my plane
38:56was supposed to take off
38:57I was like
38:58are you on this flight
38:59and she said
38:59no
39:00I was on the flight
39:01before this
39:02but that was cancelled
39:03because of the rain
39:04and they're putting us
39:05all in the same plane
39:06I said okay
39:07are you in first class
39:09we can sit together
39:10no
39:10I'm
39:11I ride in a coach
39:13so I was really impressed
39:17by that
39:17because I said okay
39:18this is something
39:19entirely different
39:20and you know
39:21of course I'm reading
39:22People magazine
39:23and he's like
39:25what are you reading
39:25and I was embarrassed
39:27that I'm like reading
39:28just you know
39:29a regular old magazine
39:31so we had a conversation
39:34for an hour
39:35probably
39:35the plane was delayed
39:36when I heard his voice
39:43I don't know what it was
39:45about his voice
39:47but it just
39:48it just
39:49you know
39:50stood me up straight
39:51like
39:52this
39:53jolt of electricity
39:55or
39:56you know
39:56when people talk about
39:57like love at first sight
39:59I just fell for him hard
40:02the next work week
40:08we were in the office together
40:09she sent over a piece
40:11of her birthday cake
40:12to my office
40:13and so I dropped by
40:14and thanked her for it
40:15and said
40:16you know
40:16you want to go out
40:17to dinner tonight
40:17we did
40:18at dinner that night
40:20we kind of talked about
40:22our
40:23the spark
40:24between us
40:25you know
40:28I was establishing myself
40:29as a
40:30individual person
40:31as a
40:33single man again
40:34I've got five children
40:36I've been married twice
40:38you know
40:40I'm coming out of a relationship
40:41for 25 years
40:43so we talked a little bit
40:44about that
40:45I told him that
40:47I wanted to live in truth
40:48that was very different
40:50for me
40:51in terms of the way
40:52I was brought up
40:54she was like
40:55my dad
40:56kind of left us
40:57when I was
40:58seven
40:58moved out
40:59when I went to school
41:01I told all the kids
41:02that my dad
41:03died
41:03I got tired
41:05of my friends
41:06asking where my dad was
41:08being real
41:13like about your emotions
41:14that's what
41:16attracted Phil
41:18to me
41:18you know
41:20for what I thought
41:22he was going to be
41:23to what he was
41:24it was so different
41:26I thought he was going to be
41:28high demanding
41:30consumed by winning
41:32he is consumed by winning
41:36but he also knows
41:37he's consumed by winning
41:38and is consumed
41:40with having a balance
41:41in his life
41:42and not only for himself
41:43but for the people
41:46surrounding him
41:47I said you know
41:52if we are going to see
41:53each other
41:53I'm not going to do it
41:55behind anyone's back
41:56it has to come
41:57with full disclosure
41:58and so we had to go
42:00through that process
42:01of letting people know
42:04which was tough
42:05I think my dad
42:09called me
42:09he says
42:10you're not going to believe
42:11who Jeannie's dating
42:12I said well who
42:14you know
42:14and I'm thinking
42:15Wayne Gretzky
42:16or you know
42:17something like that
42:18he goes
42:20no Phil
42:21I go
42:25are you kidding me
42:27Phil Phil
42:28and he goes
42:29yes Phil Phil
42:30that was the conversation
42:32I remember when she told me
42:34and it was almost like
42:36oh my gosh
42:36are you kidding me
42:37like oh you're dating
42:38that guy
42:39you know
42:39he was definitely older
42:41I think my father
42:43was a little
42:44taken back by it
42:47do you think
42:48that the age difference
42:50bothered him at all
42:51he was living
42:52that age difference
42:53he just felt
42:57that there was
42:58a conflict
42:59of interest now
42:59anything that
43:00he talked to Phil
43:01about was going
43:02to get to Jeannie
43:03anything that
43:03he talked to Jeannie
43:04about was going
43:05to get to Phil
43:05so now he had to
43:07choose his words
43:08carefully
43:09and I don't think
43:10he liked that
43:11how do you react
43:13when they give him
43:15heat for being in love
43:16with the boss's daughter
43:17we're not Brad Pitt
43:20and Jennifer Aniston
43:20you know
43:21we're two adults
43:22who have lived
43:24long lives
43:25and had experiences
43:26I really don't understand
43:27the fascination
43:27it did bug Jerry West
43:30you know
43:31particularly with Jeannie
43:32who now was getting
43:33more involved
43:34with the team
43:35my concern
43:36in a small organization
43:37like that
43:38was that going to
43:39permeate
43:40and divide people
43:41didn't like it
43:43did not like it
43:44I come down to L.A.
43:5199-2000 season
43:53by that time
43:54I was 11 years
43:56or so in the league
43:56and I had played
43:58with Shaq in Orlando
43:59but Phil was different
44:02and that first year
44:03in L.A.
44:04I think all of us
44:05collectively as a team
44:07were like
44:08this dude is a little strange
44:10I mean what does
44:11all this stuff
44:11that he has us doing
44:13have to do with basketball
44:14he comes in the room
44:19and all of a sudden
44:20we smelling this stuff
44:21we're like what the
44:22what is it
44:23someone smoking weed
44:24he's going to
44:25everybody's locker
44:26and like he's like
44:27trying to you know
44:28get out the demons
44:29and stuff
44:29and one last question
44:32Zen Master
44:32tell me about that
44:33well it's just something
44:34I taught these players
44:36about you know
44:37learning how to meditate
44:38learning how to put
44:39their mind at ease
44:41I'm looking at him
44:42so I'm talking back
44:45Michael and Scotty
44:46did the meditation
44:48they did it
44:49I'm going to do it
44:50everyday he come in
44:51with the sage
44:52and we got a chance
44:53to meditate for a practice
44:54go to the more quiet place
44:56it was my rookie year
44:58and I had the worst person
44:59sitting behind me
45:00couldn't hold attention
45:01for more than five minutes
45:03and that's Shaq
45:03kicking my chair
45:04the whole time
45:05we sat there at home
45:07for about a half hour
45:08and you thought to yourself
45:09it is not too bad
45:12at least we're not floating
45:13Zen is something
45:15that brings awareness
45:15and is very much
45:16part of what I believe
45:17is the game
45:18is important key
45:19and if you're aware
45:20out there
45:20it really helps your team
45:21understanding and learning
45:23meditation
45:23helped us to slow
45:25ourselves down
45:26mentally
45:26emotionally
45:27psychologically
45:28you know Phil had this thing
45:33when he came in
45:34he'd interview all the players
45:36and he'd make them
45:37read books
45:38what kind of stuff
45:39would he bring in Shaq?
45:40he bought me a book
45:41by uh
45:42by a guy named Nietzsche
45:44really?
45:46yeah
45:46really?
45:47Nietzsche wrote a book
45:48called uh Superman
45:49but I didn't want to read
45:50about myself
45:51so you know
45:51I didn't read it
45:52by interviewing
45:55by Pat Heiden
45:57out of the books
45:57he knows what makes us go
45:59and if you challenge us
46:01most of the time
46:03we step up
46:04the opening of Staples
46:08for the Los Angeles Lakers
46:09and everybody excited
46:11about this new facility
46:12and hoping
46:12that they'll get it
46:13with a win
46:14where it goes
46:15it didn't go
46:16off the fingertips
46:16you were young
46:17so I
46:19I think that
46:20meditation
46:20just started to help us
46:22connect with each other
46:24we ran off
46:3116 games in a row
46:32and then we won
46:3419 games in a row
46:35and everybody started
46:37to kind of look at each other
46:39and say
46:39this is working
46:41we quickly realized
46:45not only did we have to apply meditation
46:48and use it for
46:49the basketball side of things
46:51but also
46:53in dealing with Kobe
46:54with Kobe
46:58he made a choice
47:01and the choice was
47:03to go it alone
47:04I do know on the road
47:06most of the time
47:07he spends it in his room
47:08and most of the time
47:10he asks us
47:10for the tape
47:11of the game
47:11we played the night
47:12before the opponent
47:13we're playing the next night
47:14you know
47:14I would study the game
47:15I would think about our opponents
47:17and not every player
47:19was doing that
47:20I said to him
47:21you know
47:21some of the players
47:22came to me
47:23and said
47:23you know
47:23you don't even want
47:24to go down
47:24and have
47:25you know
47:26a bite to eat with him
47:27Kobe was extremely quiet
47:29sat in the back of the bus
47:31he has on headphones
47:33bob in his head
47:34like he's listening to music
47:35like he's not paying attention
47:37to anybody
47:37I go and sit next to him
47:40there's nothing in the headphones
47:41he just wants to hear
47:43what these guys are saying
47:44at times it felt like
47:46you know what
47:47he doesn't want to be a part of this
47:49but he feels like
47:50he's too good to
47:51you know
47:51to hang out with the fellas
47:52Kobe Bryant's coming in the ball game
47:55that's what all the noise is about
47:56he saw himself as a star
47:59and the coach is all over Kobe
48:07he was saying
48:08I want to be the best basketball player ever
48:10and if I'm restricted
48:12and not scoring points
48:13that's not how I'm going to be seen
48:15sometimes
48:18players have to make a sacrifice
48:20for the betterment of the team
48:21we wanted as a group
48:23to kind of address
48:24Kobe being selfish on the court
48:26something wasn't right
48:28something wasn't right
48:29I mean I go to practice
48:30and I feel a little uncomfortable
48:31what the
48:33what's this about
48:34the mood in the locker
48:35was not good
48:37so I asked the ball boys
48:40the trainers
48:41Jerry West
48:42Mitch Kupchak
48:43to leave the room
48:44I want to talk to these players alone
48:46and then I started out on
48:49what's going on out there
48:50what's going on with you guys
48:52and then I want to talk
48:53Rick Fox finally said
48:56you know we've had trouble with Kobe
48:58Kobe sometimes
48:59gets in this individual act
49:00anything that doesn't drive
49:03the team agenda
49:05like I have to cut out
49:06like it's cancer
49:07and so my communication
49:09I think was a little
49:10probably more emotional
49:12than people expected it to be
49:14Rick got so emotional
49:15I think he cried
49:16and he just kind of like
49:17went in and just like
49:18that's bull
49:19you know you don't trust us
49:20you know we're your brothers
49:21if you don't trust us
49:22we're not going to trust you
49:25we're not going to give you the ball
49:26the true definition
49:28of a great player
49:29is one that makes players
49:30around you better
49:31you can't come in
49:32doing that all by yourself
49:34pissing everybody off
49:36because now
49:37they don't want to play
49:38and we can't have that right now
49:40so yeah I said
49:41what I had to say
49:42and I meant it
49:43that was the moment
49:44when everybody
49:45got some stuff
49:46off their chest
49:47and when your teammates
49:48sit back
49:49and tell you how they view you
49:50are you able to absorb that
49:53and understand that
49:55it was about them
49:56thinking I was out for myself
49:58and I was being selfish
49:59which was totally not the case
50:03I talked to Jerry West
50:05about it at the time
50:06and said you know
50:07Kobe doesn't really want to win
50:09if he wants it to be about him
50:11you know maybe it'd be best
50:13to move him on
50:14I would say teams
50:20emerge as championship contenders
50:22by December or January
50:23Lakers were one of those teams
50:25they finished with the best record
50:28in the league that year
50:29but in the postseason
50:30we learned very early on
50:32that you can show things
50:34in the regular season
50:35and it's a whole different story
50:37learning how to win a championship
50:39tonight
50:42it's the Portland Trailblazers
50:44versus the Los Angeles Lakers
50:45I just think you know
50:48both teams just gonna come out
50:49and lay it on the line
50:50I mean I think the pressure's on them
50:51because everybody expected them
50:53to beat us in this series
50:54so dominantly
50:56going into that game 7
50:58we were tied
50:59the series was tied 3-3
51:00game 7 against Portland
51:03was so pivotal
51:03because I think if they don't win
51:05that game
51:05it's possible
51:07Shaq and Kobe get broken up
51:08this thing is gonna be over
51:10before we even had a chance
51:11to start
51:11the Lakers have to realize
51:13that they've got 12 minutes to play
51:14and it's only a 13 point game
51:16not anymore
51:17Steve Smith hits on the run
51:19and it's 15
51:20I was at that game man
51:22and we looked like
51:24our dog just died
51:26they were blowing us out
51:27man I was so mad
51:28it was so mad
51:29like this is how
51:31we're going down again
51:31in game 7
51:33when you're down 15 points
51:36in the fourth quarter
51:37when everything's about
51:39to crumble away
51:40Phil says what he says
51:42every day
51:43go to your quiet place
51:45you ain't calling no place
51:47shut the hell up
51:48go to your quiet place
51:50he used a little bit of reverse
51:52like I was
51:53oh it's been a great year
51:54I know you pussies
51:55couldn't do it
51:56we'll win next year
51:57but we're not gonna win this year
51:58good job guys
52:00and then we look at each other like what
52:01when we was 13 down
52:03I told my guys
52:04look do or die
52:05time is now
52:06we've been in this position before
52:07we ain't never lost three in a row
52:08let's play
52:09let's go
52:09just kind of like
52:10trying to light a fire
52:11you get this little spark
52:13and you begin to blow on it
52:14and say
52:14come on come on
52:15heat up
52:16and uh
52:17that's what
52:18began to happen
52:19it was a whole game
52:21I'm like
52:21hey man
52:22I know you
52:23like to do this
52:23but I'm right there dog
52:25alright I got you
52:26Kobe's like
52:28hey Shaq
52:29instead of trying to shoot
52:30three or four jump hooks
52:31over four or five people
52:32I'm right here
52:33alright I got you Kobe
52:34so I kept telling him
52:36and he kept saying
52:36I got you
52:37so right when he's
52:38right when he's
52:39crossed Scotty up
52:40does he have me?
52:42step two
52:43Brian
52:44Deshawn
52:45I wasn't watching that moment
52:51I was at the motherfucking game
52:52I was in the crowd
52:54you understand me
52:55we were so excited
52:56we were so excited
52:56so happy
52:57we jumped out
52:58our motherfucking seats
52:59Kobe Bryant's assist
53:00to Shaquille O'Neal
53:01makes it a six point difference
53:04he could have took the shot
53:06but he was like
53:07you know what
53:07big dogs there
53:09that meant that
53:10we were finally there
53:11that moment was so significant
53:13because that's when you knew
53:14we had the game secured
53:16we found something
53:17in that
53:18eight nine minute stretch
53:20that defined us
53:21for the next
53:22you know
53:23three four years
53:24with 41 and 3 tenths
53:27seconds left
53:27LA has outscored
53:28Portland
53:29that's it
53:31a huge comeback
53:33in the fourth quarter
53:34in order to
53:36achieve
53:37what they each
53:38want to achieve
53:39the two of them
53:40are
53:40connected
53:42and there's no way
53:43to separate that
53:44was this the ultimate
53:45test for you all
53:46up to this point
53:47this has been
53:48the ultimate test
53:48I knew my teammates
53:49was going to step up
53:50overnight
53:50because I had to step up
53:51the last two games
53:52these two guys
53:53are working together
53:54this way
53:55the rest of the league
53:56has no chance
53:56the Pacers
54:00Reggie Miller
54:02Jalen Rose
54:04Rick Smith
54:05man we knew
54:07he was going to
54:08dust them off
54:08they was weak
54:10Larry Bird says
54:13we know we can
54:14beat this team
54:14however our confidence
54:15isn't always there
54:17it comes and goes
54:18tonight will set the tone
54:19for the entire series
54:20the Pacers deep
54:24to O'Neal
54:24into the lane
54:27to the hoop
54:28and Jack catches up
54:29and that's what he has to do
54:34a lot of different ways
54:36to score
54:37the toughest game
54:41for us
54:41was in game four
54:42there's always one play
54:45that you go
54:45that's one that killed us
54:47it was that tip in
54:50from Kobe
54:50now
54:58uno más
55:00to go
55:01here comes a two-on-one break
55:03with Kobe and Shaw
55:04Kobe and Dean
55:05give to Shaq
55:06Shaq is hammered
55:07forward
55:07listen to this crowd
55:09the Lakers have the lead
55:10the Lakers have the lead
55:11he threw it to three
55:12no good
55:12game's over
55:13the mentality that I had
55:31if I get to the finals again
55:33I'm coming home with this
55:35and I'll follow Phil's orders
55:37and won the MVP
55:38too
55:39Jack Diesel
55:42finally got one
55:44and the mentality
55:47that he had
55:47I'm getting one
55:48of these trophies too
55:49so if you got two people
55:51that have that same mentality
55:52plus everybody else
55:54is on the right page
55:55is it what you dreamed of
55:57or is everything a more
55:58I mean you have to
55:58the Lakers cut is falling
56:00from the ceiling
56:00the fans are going crazy
56:01you know to reach this
56:03pinnacle again
56:04after going all the way down
56:07it's just a fantastic feeling
56:09I can tell you
56:10it took us 10 years
56:12it's really amazing
56:14the championship
56:14is back where it belongs
56:16it is where it belongs
56:17you know to see his
56:19just the satisfaction
56:20and his joy
56:22involved in that
56:23it was a beautiful moment
56:25for sure
56:25I was a little kid
56:27but I've heard these stories
56:28about how the Lakers
56:29won so many championships
56:30in the 80s
56:31and being there
56:32with my father
56:34to see him
56:35at his peak happiness
56:37made it that much
56:38more special
56:38because really
56:40it was the first time
56:41me or Jesse
56:41really remember
56:43celebrating a championship
56:45you know
56:45we were just so excited
56:46to be on that stage
56:48and be part of that
56:49is this the beginning
56:53of another dynasty
56:55we'll just have to see
56:57what history says
56:58and Shaq says
56:58you're going to do it
56:59again next year
56:59that's a quote
57:03that's right
57:04well if Shaq says
57:05we're going to win
57:06who am I to say
57:08okay Shaq
57:12let's do it
57:13that make you feel better
57:30you ain't gonna fire now
57:31are you Ricky
57:32that's what I'm talking about
57:34that make you feel better
57:36and if you do it
57:38I'll get you
57:39I'll go
57:39I'll go
57:40and if this is
57:42I'll take you
57:42I'll get you
57:43I'll pass
57:43you
